US politicization of tech supply chains is both risky and costly

BEIJING, May 25, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on US politicization of tech supply chains is both risky and costly.

In 2019, the Trump administration unleashed its "tech war" on China, with the goal of blocking China’s development in high tech sectors by preventing targeted companies from procuring components manufactured in the United States.

As the White House ramped up its hostility toward Beijing, it intensified its measures. The most notable target was the Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei, which was first placed on the commerce department’s "entity list" putting it under export controls. Later, it was also subjected to the "foreign direct product rule," which unilaterally banned overseas companies who use U.S. patents in their own semiconductor production from supplying the company.

Even though President Joe Biden has since taken office, he has yet to reverse these decisions. Instead, he has pressed on in the mold of an "America First" policy when it comes to semiconductors with the goal of consolidating a U.S. monopoly of the industry and controlling "technologies of the future."

What have been the consequences of these decisions? In fact, they have had adverse effects for America and the world at large.

The aggressive politicization of the semiconductor sector against the world’s second largest economy is disrupting a global supply chain, reversing globalization and creating an effect of "localization."

China has massively boosted its investment in semiconductor capabilities on a whole-of-society scale, while America has created political risks for tech firms who rely on their supplies. On an organizational level, firms have been bulk buying semiconductor and lithography manufacturing equipment from the Netherlands, Japan and South Korea, as well as panic buying semiconductors to hedge against potential future restrictions. Companies are losing confidence in traditional suppliers.

This uncertainty has created a global shortage in semiconductors, which is causing risks to the global economy. The shortage has created delays in the manufacturing and supply of electronic consumer goods and automobiles, which has forced many factories around the world to postpone production and furlough workers. For example, Nissan’s Sunderland factory in the U.K. was forced to slow production for three weeks due to a lack of semiconductors. Another consequence has been growing inflation, which undoubtedly contributed to the unexpected surge in the U.S. consumer price index, which jittered global markets last week.

These adverse outcomes show that weaponizing technology supply chains against China will not make America better off. Localized supply chains are more expensive and will cost the U.S. considerable market share as Beijing develops its own industry. This year, China will commence production of 7-nanometer nodes and quickly cede dependency on lower nodes, with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) investing in a $2.35 billion chip foundry in Shenzhen set to produce 28-nm integrated circuits. This has allowed companies such as Huawei to continue developing their 5G networks despite U.S. sanctions.

In China, government investment in the sector has already amounted to $150 billion, while earmarked investment for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) extends to $1 trillion. While this is seen as a political necessity, few disagree that an open-ended global industry remains preferential. Leading foreign semiconductor companies still seek to compete within the Chinese semiconductor market due to its growing economy and surging demand, showing the dangers of upheaving this market.

In this case, it is worth noting that one thing is certain when it comes to current U.S. policy: Weaponizing semiconductors creates a "lose-lose" situation, carving up a global industry into localized spheres, creating a fractured market and raising prices. That being said, it will still not block China’s technological advances.

For all involved, it is a costly and unpredictable path with knock on effects all the way down to the ordinary consumer.

AAC’s WLG Hybrid Camera Lens Global debut marks a new dawn in Mobile Photography

SHENZHEN, China, April 30, 2021 — Xiaomi’s Redmi K40 Gaming Edition is the first mobile phone in the world to incorporate a Wafer Level Glass (WLG) hybrid camera lens.  The K40 Gaming Edition was officially launched on April 27th, 2021. The hybrid camera lens solution includes 1 glass + 5 plastic lens elements provided by AAC Optics, a subsidiary of AAC Technologies.  AAC Optics made their initial investment into WLG 10 years ago and has subsequently developed patented expertise to enable high volume production of Wafer Level Glass (WLG) technology into the Smartphone, Automotive, and IOT (Internet of Things) markets.

The launch represents a milestone in mobile photography. The camera touts a larger aperture and a 15% increase in light reaching the sensor, enabling lower noise and more detail for low light and night photography. The unique lens coating and anti-reflective technologies reduce ghosting and flare in complex light environments. With increased aperture, optical designers have greater design freedom for improved performance and smaller dimensions, making phones lighter and thinner.

Due to the extremely challenging manufacturing process of glass material, all mobile phones currently use plastic lenses. Leveraging semiconductor wafer manufacturing techniques, AAC Optics has demonstrated that glasses lenses can be mass produced for global smartphone supply chains. Due to the highly transferable technology, WLG is suitable for making a variety of high-precision aspheric glass lenses. This will open limitless opportunities for glass lenses to improve the end user experience in applications beyond smartphones, including automotive, AR/VR, drones, smart home devices and wearables.

Virtual Studio is no more mysterious than "LED on Cameras"

There’s a highlight at the beginning when Romanowski described Virtual Studio with "LED on Cameras", which was seconded by Czimny. Since many people are afraid of the virtual studio because it sounds new. Romanowski, a senior industry expert who started using Absen LED products since 2005, revealed it’s not that mysterious and there is no need to be afraid of the new technology.

Find the right professionals to make Virtual Studio profitable

The webinar also gave suggestions on implementing LED virtual platforms for the first time. Finding a professional team, integrator, or company for virtual studio solutions is a must according to Amador. "Having that person who understands the entire process even if we’re just remote and just helping you remotely, that’s going be really key to making virtual studio profitable." It is imperative for AV professionals to know how to implement LED technology to their projects.

LG Innotek Develops Automotive Lighting Module ‘Nexlide-E’

  • Brightness improved by 63%. Applicable to the front/rear of an automobile.
  • 0.2mm thick optical film is used to produce a customized lighting module.
  • Target the global market with "the automotive light source solution service."

SEOUL, South Korea, April 21, 2021 — LG Innotek (CEO Cheol-dong Jeong) announced on the 20th that it had developed ‘Nexlide-E,’ an automotive lighting module that produces bright and uniform light.

An LG Innotek employee is holding the automotive lighting module Nexlide-E. This product is 63% brighter than the previous product and produces uniform light. It can be applied to the front/rear of an automobile.
An LG Innotek employee is holding the automotive lighting module Nexlide-E. This product is 63% brighter than the previous product and produces uniform light. It can be applied to the front/rear of an automobile.

This automotive lighting module is made of three parts. An LED package, which is a light source, is mounted on a thin substrate. Then, optical resin covers the package and substrate for protection. Lastly, a thin optical film is attached on top of the package to spread the light brightly and evenly. The module can be used as taillights, stop lamps, and headlights.

The Nexlide is LG Innotek’s automotive lighting service brand that has the meaning of a next-generation light source. The name was produced by combining the words ‘Next,’ ‘Lighting,’ and ‘Device.’ LG Innotek provides automotive lighting module products as well as customized solutions such as optical device design, lighting design proposal, and more with the Nexlide brand.

The Nexlide-E is 63% brighter than the previous product and produces more uniform light. LG Innotek applied a high-performance and high-reliability optical film to improve the lighting performance. The company’s micropatterning technique was used in the film to give a variety of lighting effects.

Due to its brightness, this lighting module can replace multiple automotive lamps with different brightness standards into one module. This can improve space efficiency and allow more design variations of a vehicle’s lamps.

The maximum brightness of the Nexlide-E has been raised from 80 cd (candela, the unit of brightness) to 130 cd, making it 63% brighter than the previous product. This satisfies the brightness standard of taillights, turn signals, and stop lamps.

The stop lamps have the most strict brightness standard. In Europe and North America, they are required to be 110 cd or higher. This is because stop lamps must be recognizable in any circumstances for driving safety.

The Nexlide-E is also power efficient, because the module is bright enough with a small amount of electricity. This is particularly important for electric and hydrogen vehicles in increasing their mileage range (corresponding to fuel economy in conventional vehicles).

Also, car manufacturers can replace different lightings of a vehicle such as a taillight and stop lamp into one lighting module using the Nexlide-E. The product’s high brightness makes this possible by satisfying the different brightness levels of taillights, stop lamps and turn signals.

As the number of lighting modules used decreases, car manufacturers can design slimmer and more compact lamps, and increase space efficiency by widening the trunk and such.

The Nexlide-E also has the advantage in that it produces a uniformly bright light. Even as a wide lamp, it produces smooth and uniform light without blind spots or sudden breaks caused by lighting level drops.

To achieve such a bright and uniform light, LG Innotek developed a new optical film for the Nexlide-E. An only 0.2mm thick film produced with the company’s unique micropatterning technique is attached to the automotive lighting module. Different types of the optical film create various lighting effects.

The micropatterns can be changed according to the type of optical film to increase brightness by collecting the beam, produce a surface light source by diffusing the light or even produce a three-dimensional light shape.

With optical films, LG Innotek can produce customized lighting modules without complex design changes or using additional components such as an inner lens.

LG Innotek will leverage the Nexlide-E to expand its share in the automotive lighting module market.

To do so, the company has been active in promotions targeting global car makers in the U.S., Japan, Europe and South Korea. The first vehicle equipped with the Nexlide-E is expected to be mass-produced in the latter half of this year.

LG Innotek is also focusing on the development of next-generation lighting products. The company is developing another type of optical film that further raises the brightness and uniformity of the light. It is also developing the Nexlide-C+, a 3D lighting module that produces 3D light shapes without any devices such as a half-mirror that assists 3D effects within a lamp.

Insoo Ryu, VP, Head of the Automotive Components & Electronics Business Division, said, "The Nexlide-E is an innovative product that satisfies the customer needs for distinctive automotive lighting designs that give characters to vehicles. With the Nexlide brand, LG Innotek will continue to deliver a safe and enjoyable driving experience with the automotive light source solution service."

Global Market Insights, a market research institute, predicts that the automotive lighting market will grow from USD 32.6 billion in 2021 to USD 38.5 billion in 2026.
