China-Nepal Railway: Hope in the Himalayas

BEIJING, Aug. 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from China.org.cn on ChinaNepal cross-border railway:

Have you ever imagined traversing through the middle of the mighty Himalayas by train?

This seemingly “crazy” idea may soon become reality. Following recent discussions between the foreign ministers of China and Nepal to speed up feasibility assessments into a cross-border railway, China plans to dispatch surveyors to Nepal as soon as this year.

On top of thorny enough obstacles like challenging topography and high altitudes, linking the two countries by railway requires tunneling through the Himalayas — an unimaginably complex feat of engineering. The bulk of the railway within Nepal will pass along bridges or through tunnels, involving huge costs and formidable construction difficulties. That being said, the project is still well worth pursuing.

As a landlocked country, Nepal has long been impeded by transportation issues. The mountainous terrain hinders travel locally, which in turn has restricted the nation’s economic and trade development. Completion of the China-Nepal Railway will connect three major cities in Nepal, making commuting much easier. Never again will Nepalese citizens have to choose between just cars and planes when going abroad. The designated section of this mammoth project within China’s borders meanders across Tibet Autonomous Region. In the first half of 2022 alone, the region has received more than 17 million tourists. Assuming only one-tenth of these travelers visit Nepal by train via Tibet, Nepal’s tourism industry would still enjoy an enormous boost. Railways will also reshape Nepal’s dependence on India for maritime transport and thereby driving its foreign trade and socio-economic growth. Laos, another landlocked nation, repivoted its market structure upon securing a major transportation channel through the China-Laos Railway project. Likewise, the China-Nepal Railway will no doubt fuel Nepal’s national development and allow more of its citizens to enjoy the benefits of development.

The China-Nepal Railway has been a long time in the making. However, progress has been slower than expected due to the project’s sheer intricacy, compounded by the impact of COVID-19. China and Nepal have been close friends for generations. China has already assisted Nepal in building key infrastructure projects, most notably the Pokhara International Airport and Kathmandu Ring Road. During the pandemic, China was Nepal’s largest supplier of medical aid and vaccines, while the zero-tariff treatment for 98% of the taxable items that China granted to Nepal will also come into effect on Sept. 1 this year.

The decision to further the China-Nepal Railway falls aptly under the Belt and Road framework. Projections by the World Bank suggest that if all transportation infrastructure construction under the Belt and Road Initiative is completed, we can expect $1.6 trillion in revenue to be generated annually by 2030, 90% of which will be shared by partner countries. Low- and lower-middle-income countries will be the greatest beneficiaries.

Tangible progress is now being made in the development of the China-Nepal Railway, the latest testament to the friendship between the two countries, and a new chapter in the Belt and Road journey. This ingenious feat of human engineering will shine in the Himalayas as a beacon of common prosperity and community with a shared future.

The Berthold library is best known for its celebrated family of Akzidenz-Grotesk® typefaces, one of the world’s first widely used sans-serif typefaces which inspired many subsequent type designs including Helvetica®.  Akzidenz-Grotesk was created in 1896 and has been used by many of the world’s largest brands.

The original Berthold type foundry, H. Berthold AG, was founded in Berlin, Germany in 1858 and built a worldwide reputation for crafting high-quality typefaces. In 1997 Berthold Types Limited acquired the Berthold inventory as well as the distribution rights and maintenance of its digital typefaces. Along with their crown jewel Akzidenz-Grotesk, Berthold’s inventory includes much-loved typefaces such as Imago®, Cosmos®, Formata®, Block®, Solemnis® and City®.

Ninan Chacko, Monotype’s CEO said, “With this acquisition by Monotype, Berthold’s historic typefaces will become part of one of the world’s largest type foundries. Our stewardship will increase global visibility of Berthold’s inventory, celebrate its legacy, and get these important typefaces in the hands of more creative professionals. But more than that, this acquisition ensures iconic type families including Akzidenz-Grotesk, Imago, and Formata remain as accessible and relevant as other historic typeface families in the Monotype library such as Helvetica® Now, Gotham®, and Neue Frutiger®.”

Upon completion of the acquisition, the Berthold library of over 700 typefaces will continue to be sold through http://www.Bertholdtypes.com and http://www.Bertholdwebfonts.com.

Berthold’s library will also be delivered as a premium inventory collection through Monotype Fonts combining more than 36,000 typefaces with the expertise of the most sought-after foundries, type designers, and trusted and secure font management.

Deb Gonet, Vice President of the Monotype Studio said, “The H. Berthold AG type foundry was one of the largest and most successful type libraries known for high-quality typefaces. By adding Berthold’s classic type library to our Monotype Fonts offering, we are furthering our goal of giving creatives the best and broadest choice of typefaces all in one place.”

HARBIN, China, Aug. 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — This is a report from Science and Technology Daily: 2022 is a crucial year for the large-scale development of 5G applications and the comprehensive iterative upgrading of the technology.

Director of China International Communications Group (CICG), Du Zhanyuan shared four viewpoints on the future development of 5G media and the empowerment of 5G technology, saying, “we need to build the 5G ecology of the international communication.”

President of Science and Technology Daily, Zhang Biyong said, “Science and Technology Daily (S&T Daily) has been paying close attention to the dynamic development of the integration between 5G technology and media, guiding global media on multiple levels, dimensions and channels. S&T Daily is always upholding scientific spirit when reporting openness and innovation, digital security, ecological protection and climate change. We are trying to influence international media in an objective manner, clear up misunderstandings, making the whole world have a better knowledge of China’s scientific progress and smart solutions and actively promote the building of a community with a shared future for humankind.”

Director of Science and Technology Department of Heilongjiang Province, Zhang Changbin and President of Heilongjiang Daily Press Group, Zhang Chunjiao attended the forum and gave viewpoints concerning local multimedia industry.

The pivotal role of 5G in communication

Editor-in-chief of S&T Daily, Xu Zhilong said that the construction of 5G ecology has reached a golden opportunity. With the empowerment of 5G technology, the structure and ability of media to collect and spread information have changed accordingly, thus strong international communication strength is needed to make China’s voice heard.

Director of China Society of Science and Technology System Reform, Zhang Jingan said, “China’s development needs the world, and the world needs China. It is crucial to let the world know about China through the media. It is of great significance to build the friendship circle among Belt and Road Initiative through the media. 5G technology should be used to enable more foreign friends to understand and support China, so as to become an inevitable force for world peace and development.”

Deputy editor-in-chief of Guangming Daily, Zhao Jianguo said, “5G has brought new opportunities for change of the mainstream media. Artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data and other cutting-edge technologies created ‘a modern communication network on a whole new level’ for production and transmission of news. Ultra HD, 5G livestreaming and VR will lead to greater innovation in transmission, and constantly improve the influence of mainstream media. Empowered by technologies, the news chain will be infinitely expanded with media convergence. These are all enabling tools for international communication.”

Deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily, Sun Shangwu also shared his opinion, saying, “As a media person, firstly we will focus on mobile communication and enhance immediacy, enabling exchanges between China and the rest of the world to spread faster and further. Secondly, we need to make our exchanges more social and interactive to make them more approachable and accessible. Thirdly, we should focus on visualization and make it more vivid so as to make China-foreign exchanges more active.”

New requirements for international communication in 5G era

Dean of Academy of contemporary China and World studies, Yu Yunquan said, “The 5G era has put forward new requirements for international media communication. Firstly is to deepen the thinking of Internet of Things and strengthen the exploration and application of new platforms. Secondly, further improve the “precision” of information services, especially the planning ability. Thirdly, Accelerate the depth of integration with the technology industry, better meet the needs of the audience.”

Targeted communication of all-media, cross culture and multiple languages will become the new trend in the information age.

Vasily Pushkov, director of International Cooperation, Sputnik News Agency and Radio, said, “The COVID-19 pandemic showed the crucial role, which new technologies play in international communications and information exchange. Online formats of interaction are developing rapidly; virtual international events bring together thousands of participants from all over the world, and bilateral online meetings with partners have become something common.”

Zhao Sha, China Media Development Director of PR Newswire said, “People who work in the media industry are paying closer attention to data from the audience. The increase of the number of views, shares, likes and videos played directly affects the entire industry.”

5G empowers the media industry of the future

Emilio Saldaña, head of science and technology for TV channel 22 in Mexico said, “The fast transmission and ultra-low latency of 5G technology will revolutionize the digital media industry, particularly in two aspects: how news is collected and how it is delivered. 5G technology can help our journalists improve their ability to capture breaking news and produce media products in a short period of time. With the popularization of 5G technology, we will continue to optimize the delivery and experience of news in the digital era.”

Forum guests from Huawei, Tencent, ZTE and Qualcomm also elaborated on the various channels and ways that technology can help improve the international communication capacity from the perspective of 5G application technology, and described the multi-sensory experience of immersive news.

Project: Transnational Liberalism: A Linked Data Case Study of Australian Political History will leverage data sets to answer questions about the political landscape in colonial Australia, the wider Asia-Pacific region, and the British world more generally during the mid- to late-1800’s. The project provides comprehensive insight into the origins of the Liberal party, which has dominated the national government of Australia for 62 years (since WWII) and shaped the Asia-Pacific region for decades.

“I am thrilled to welcome our second group of Gale fellows to the Bodleian Libraries,” said Richard Ovenden, Bodley’s librarian at the University of Oxford. “We have chosen the finest researchers and academics with the intention of advancing their respective fields through access to our rich holdings and the various forms of digital scholarship employed at the Bodleian. The first group of Gale fellows were able to use Bodleian approaches and collections to significantly advance understanding of the humanities in their research areas, and we are so excited to see what we can achieve together this year.”

The goal of the Gale Scholar Asia Pacific, Digital Humanities Oxford Fellowships is to encourage emerging DH scholarship in the Asia-Pacific region and progress the contribution of non-Western and regional perspectives in the field of DH research. The program increases opportunities for collaboration with other scholars to share new ideas, while providing access to critical tools to support their work. Fellows will become short-term visiting fellows at the University’s Jesus College to allow them access to a range of facilities and resources during their stay.

“We are pleased to continue sponsoring fellowships at the Bodleian Libraries this year. We hope the second-year cohort derives as much value from their stay at Oxford as the first-year cohort,” said Terry Robinson, senior vice president for Gale Global Academic. “Having access to University of Oxford’s world-class facilities, resources and people will undoubtedly enrich their understanding and use of digital scholarship in their projects. We also hope that access to Gale Digital Scholar Lab and Gale Primary Sources at the Bodleian will help them push the boundaries of their research and bring it to the attention of a global audience.”

The fellows will start the program at the University of Oxford in October 2022 and complete it in June 2023.

Gale has been at the forefront of supporting digital scholarship for many years. Gale Digital Scholar Lab was created to address common challenges researchers and scholars face when analyzing large sets of archives. In offering fellowships to scholars in multiple disciplines, Gale is increasing access to text and data mining tools and furthering opportunities in both research and teaching. In June, Gale also announced fellowships to support emerging LGBTQ+ research.

LONDON, July 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/Display shipments for applications featuring near-eye displays are expected to reach 25.3 million units in 2022, up 73.8% year-over-year (YoY), before reaching 139 million units in 2028, based on Omdia’s latest Near Eye Display for XR Application Report – 2022.

Near-eye display market unit forecast, 2020-28
Near-eye display market unit forecast, 2020-28

Omdia sees three main influencers behind this growth. Firstly, sales of XR (including AR, VR and MR) end devices are growing due to increasing gaming, industrial, medical and commercial demand; secondly, brands are preferring to adopt a dual-display design to replace the original single-display design and improving users’ visual experiences and thirdly, the well-established ecosystem from  brands like Metaverse, Apple and their multiple device screen strategy.

Omdia expects revenue growth to peak in 2023 primarily because more brands are expected to adopt OLED on silicon (OLEDoS) for near-eye devices in 2023 with higher unit prices.

VR displays can be either single- or dual-display. The requirements for VR displays include higher resolution to achieve higher pixels per degree (PPD) and a lower screen-door effect.

Kimi Lin, Senior Research Analyst, said: “Popular TFT LCD and AMOLED displays used for smartphones are also applicable to VR devices. The VR display supply chain is mature because popular TFT-based LCD or AMOLED displays are widely used and panel makers are already established, including Japan Display Inc. (JDI), Sharp Corp., Samsung Display, AUO, BOE Technology, Innolux Corp., China Star, and Sony. Presently, more brands are increasingly trying to use OLEDoS for VR applications to enable better visual effects.”

OLEDoS can be used for both VR and AR applications and provide better visual performance than AMOLED and LTPS LCD displays in VR applications. Companies like Kopin, eMagin and Sony are leading the industry while OLEDoS has attracted the attention of and investment from many Chinese companies such as BOE, SeeYa, Olightek, and Sidtek with the up to the end of 2021 total investment has been $4.5 billion.

CGTN: Xi stresses strengthening sense of community for Chinese nation

BEIJING, July 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — As the lyrics of a popular folk song in China go, “the brothers and sisters from the 56 ethnic groups belong to the same family.”

China is home to 56 ethnic groups, with the majority Han making up around 91.5 percent of the country’s population, according to 2021 data. Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has been a multi-ethnic region since ancient times and is home to over 45 ethnic groups.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed promoting ethnic unity and progress and consolidating the sense of community for the Chinese nation during his visit to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning.

Protecting cultures of various ethnic groups

The extensive and profound Chinese civilization is composed of outstanding cultures of various ethnic groups, said Xi when watching a show called “Manas” from the Kirgiz ethnic minority at the Museum of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The performances have been inscribed as an intangible cultural heritage.

A cultural heritage like “Manas” is a treasure of both the Kirgizs and the Chinese nation, he said, urging better preservation and promotion efforts.

All ethnic groups in Xinjiang have items on the national and autonomous regional representative lists of intangible cultural heritage, and 133 cultural heritage sites are under state protection, according to a white paper released by the country’s State Council Information Office last year.

The cultural traditions of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang are well protected, said the paper, giving examples such as folk cultural events, such as the Han Lantern Festival, the Uygur Meshrep, the Kazak Aytes, the Kirgiz Kobuz Ballad Singing Fair, the Mongolian Nadam Fair, and the Hui Hua’er Folk Song Festival, which are still widely celebrated.

Improving livelihood of all ethnic groups

While visiting the Guyuanxiang residential community in the Tianshan District on Wednesday morning, Xi urged local officials to improve community services to benefit residents of all ethnic groups.

The president also traveled on Wednesday afternoon to Shihezi City, where he inspected officials and staff workers at the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC), a group whose status he called “irreplaceable.”

As an important component of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the XPCC is a special social organization that handles its own administrative and judicial affairs within the reclamation areas under its administration, in accordance with the laws and regulations of the state and the region. It assumes the responsibilities of cultivating and guarding the border areas.

Speaking to XPCC officials and staff workers, Xi said he was pleased about the great progress made by the XPCC in reform and development, and XPCC officials and staff workers themselves should also be proud.

He also learned about the history of the XPCC in cultivating and guarding the frontier areas, as well as the Corps’ efforts in strengthening its primary-level organizations, developing specialty agriculture, and promoting the integrated development of the Corps and local areas.

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has seen continuous economic development with businesses thriving. Xinjiang registered a 7-percent GDP growth in 2021, totaling 1.6 trillion yuan (about $253.2 billion).

A total of 477,400 urban jobs were created in the region, reducing the surveyed urban unemployment rate by 1.1 percentage points to 2.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Statistics in the autonomous region.

Nurturing talent, coordinating COVID-19 response with economic and social development and advancing Belt and Road cooperation were also stressed by the president during the inspection tour.
