International Children’s Day, which falls on June 1, is celebrated across China every year. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed efforts to promote the healthy and all-round development of children and extended festive greetings to children across the country.

Two months ago, Xi compared children to “saplings” when attending a tree-planting activity in Beijing, encouraging them to contribute to the country’s development.

“You are like saplings,” he said. “You will eventually grow into towering trees in the future and form a forest for the Chinese nation, a forest of talents.”

Underscoring China’s goal to build a great modern socialist country with Chinese characteristics by the middle of the century, he said, “You have 30 years to go. Now you are 10 years old, and you will be 40 at that time. You will become the pillars of the country.”

Xi encourages children to chase their dreams

Xi loves children and always encourages them to chase their dreams.

“A better life for children is our biggest wish,” Xi said when taking part in an event ahead of International Children’s Day in 2013.

Celebrating the festival in 2014 with students at a primary school, he said children are the future of the country and the hope of the Chinese nation.

“Heroes are cultivated from a young age. The waves behind drive on those ahead. I hope you live with dreams and aspirations,” he told the students.

In May 2013, Xi visited a school in Lushan County of Ya’an City, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, weeks after a magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck the area. In a prefabricated classroom, he attended a class meeting with pupils and encouraged them to work hard in chasing their dreams. 

Nine years later, a former pupil who was in the classroom recalled Xi’s words.

“I was sitting in the front row when Grandpa Xi was standing in front of the class. With a smile, he asked what our dreams were,” said Luo Yunfang. “I remember my answer was to work as an editor because I love writing. Grandpa Xi was very pleased. He praised us for our imagination.”

Luo, now a student at Chengdu University of Technology, said she is making her dream come true.

“I joined the media center of our school and have written a lot of articles. I’m kind of living my dream bit by bit,” she said.

China’s efforts in protecting children’s rights

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, governments at all levels have been providing unprecedented care to children and youth, from ensuring equal access to education and sending teachers to impoverished mountain villages to investing to upgrade facilities in rural areas.

The country has put in place a legal system of more than 100 laws and regulations that comprehensively protect the rights and interests of women and children, according to a white paper released in June last year by the State Council Information Office.

Several laws and regulations have been newly drafted or amended over the past decade to further strengthen the protection of the rights and interests of minors. Two major moves are a revision to the minor protection law, which came into effect on June 1, 2021, and the Law on Family Education Promotion implemented on January 1, 2022.

Meanwhile, China is stepping up efforts to reduce the excessive workloads of students to promote healthy and all-round development.

In July last year, China launched a “double reduction” policy to address the excessive academic burden on primary and middle school students and the over-heated off-campus tutoring.

After the implementation of the new policy, offline off-campus training institutions that offer curriculum subject programs have been reduced by 83.8 percent nationwide, and online training institutions have been reduced by 84.1 percent, data from the Ministry of Education showed.

STEPVR Released the World’s First Metaverse Gate

The current market for VR headsets has been growing rapidly because companies are heavily subsidizing their users to encourage product sales. However, Dr. Guo views it as an unreasonable behavior because the sellers are unable to identify the real demands of the consumers for their products.

More than 1 in 3 website visitors in Japan is a bot, study finds.

TOKYO, May 25, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Today, the global leader in Go-to-Market Security, CHEQ, released data that shows 34% of direct website visits in Japan comes from a bots or fake user. This rate is higher than the APAC region at-large, which typically experiences 21% bot traffic from organic and direct sources. Globally, the percentage of invalid traffic from these sources hovers around 27%.

The fake traffic revealed by CHEQ is comprised of various types of online threats including: harmful scrapers, account hackers, click farms, as well as malicious human activity. The company detected invalid traffic by analyzing websites from 12,000+ customers, and applying thousands of cybersecurity challenges to test whether each user had the intent and ability to make purchases and engage with the website in meaningful ways, or if they were a bad actor.

“Our studies have revealed that Japan websites are particularly at risk for invalid activity,” said Kazuki Fuse, Managing Director of Japan at CHEQ. “While all websites in all regions can fall victim to the Fake Web, certain regions and industries experience higher rates of invalid activity. This data suggests that those doing business in Japan should pay close attention to activity on their sites and be aware of any unusual site visitor actions.”

This data was released as part of a larger report on the state of the Fake Web, and how it impacts marketers and go-to-market teams. The report covered the rates and impact of invalid traffic in various regions, from a variety of sources, and within several different industries. The report also found that the APAC region generally experiences higher rates of invalid traffic than the EMEA region, which sees about 12% fake traffic from organic and direct sources.

Stranded whale rescue: A miraculous achievement

BEIJING, May 6, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A news report by China.org.cn on a stranded whale rescue:

Recently, a 20-hour livestream had millions of Chinese netizens on the edge of their seats. This special live broadcast was focused on attempts to rescue a whale stranded on a beach in Zhejiang province.

On the morning of April 19, as fisherman Yang Genhe and his peers were preparing to head out to sea, they spotted a sperm whale measuring around 20 meters in length lying in the shallows. They immediately contacted the local maritime and fishery authorities, and within just two hours, whale experts across China and local professional rescuers had been rallied.

Yet, to be honest, successful attempts to rescue sperm whales of such a huge size are exceedingly rare around the world, let alone in China. For that reason, experts initially believed that the rescue was a long shot.

The whale’s life was at stake as the tide went out for six hours during the daytime. Rescuers repeatedly fetched buckets of water and doused the whale in a bid to keep it alive. Many fishermen also showed up at the beach and used their bare hands to splash water on the whale as there weren’t enough buckets. This was a very touching sight. They gently poured water over the whale’s body, being careful to avoid its nostrils and eyes, so that the stranded animal wouldn’t choke on sand. In the meantime, bamboo poles, netting and quilts were brought to the beach to construct a screen for the whale against sunlight and help keep it wet. Veterinarians also hooked the whale up to an IV drip. These efforts continued until the tide returned.

When the tide rose later that evening, the rescue team managed to tow the whale little by little into the water. People were surprised to see the sperm whale gradually regain its energy and blow a large column of water when it reached deeper waters.

The most touching thing during the whole rescue process was that everyone involved gave 100% effort, despite there being such little hope. They demonstrated those most basic of human emotions, namely, reverence for all living creatures and the instinct to cherish life.

In fact, whale strandings are relatively common around the world. Experts have made numerous investigations into why they happen, with theories such as noise pollution and environmental contamination having constantly been proved. From this perspective, growing public attention in China toward the stranding and rescue of whales also reflects people’s introspection and awareness toward issues concerning marine eco-system.
