CGTN: China-DRC ties enter comprehensive, deep-going growth with full vitality

BEIJING, May 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — In 2015, China and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) established a strategic partnership of win-win cooperation, which provided a strategic direction for the further development of bilateral relations.

By upgrading ties into a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership on Friday in Beijing, the two countries are eyeing mature, stable and groundbreaking China-DRC relations that will benefit the two peoples.

During a meeting with DRC President Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, who is in China for a state visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed the fruitful cooperation achieved by the two countries, adding the two sides have forged a close community of shared interests and shared future.

Strategic partners walking side by side 

Over the years, through the signing of a series of agreements and memorandums of understanding covering agriculture, health, trade, infrastructure and other fields, the friendly cooperation between China and the DRC has continued to deepen. 

China has been the DRC’s largest trading partner and source of foreign investment for many years in a row. In 2022, the bilateral trade volume reached $21.898 billion, a year on year increase of 51.7 percent. 

Infrastructure cooperation between the two countries has also yielded fruitful results. 

China has aided the construction of projects such as the People’s Palace, home to the National Assembly and the Senate, the Martyrs Stadium and the Central African Cultural and Arts Center, which will be completed by the end of this year. 

China-DRC Friendship Hospital is a landmark project of bilateral medical and health cooperation. Since its completion, the hospital has treated a large number of patients, effectively improving the medical conditions of the Congolese people. 

In Friday’s meeting, Xi told Tshisekedi that China will work with the DRC to support each other, seek cooperation, promote development and make progress together on the road of development and revitalization. 

China’s high-quality development will provide more cooperation opportunities and a broader market for the DRC and promote greater development of bilateral relations, Xi said, adding China will, as always, help the DRC in its economic and social development. 

Appreciating China for its long-term help and valuable support for the economic and social development of the DRC, Tshisekedi said the friendly cooperation between the two countries has withstood the test of time and achieved fruitful results, which are worth cherishing by both sides. 

A China–Africa community with a shared future

Amid the current international situation, China and Africa need to strengthen solidarity and cooperation more than ever, Xi pointed out.

Calling for jointly safeguarding the common interests of developing countries, Xi said China firmly supports Africa in pursuing an independent development path, and in becoming an important pole of world politics, economy and civilization.

Under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China announced the 10 major China–Africa cooperation plans at the FOCAC’s Johannesburg Summit in 2015 and the eight major initiatives at the Beijing Summit in 2018, raising China–Africa relations to a new level.

When addressing the opening ceremony of the 8th Ministerial Conference of the FOCAC held in Dakar in 2021, Tshisekedi said “Africans and Chinese are side by side today as old friends,” calling on the two sides to realize “the common ambition of sharing destiny, solidarity, justice and being exemplary in relations between the two peoples.”

Pledging to implement the nine programs of China–Africa cooperation announced in Dakar, Xi called for joint efforts to promote the joint construction of the Belt and Road to support Africa to achieve sustainable development, and build a China–Africa community with a shared future in the new era.

GENEVA, May 19, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Today, at the United Nations Human Rights Council’s 43rd Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group, the Ministry of Interior (MOI) of the United Arab Emirates, in partnership with the Permanent Mission of the UAE, launched a new innovative programme, MOI’s Child Protection Strategy 2023-26, which responds to the global crisis of child safety on online platforms.

The launch event at Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland gathered a diverse group of relevant high-level stakeholders from the UAE, WePROTECT Global Alliance, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the FBI, among others.

Unveiling the Child Protection Strategy, Lt. Colonel Abdulrahman Al Tamimi, Deputy Director General of the International Affairs Bureau at the MOI said:

“Against the backdrop of increased online child sexual abuse and exploitation, the safety of children is the UAE’s utmost priority. Our latest strategy centres around building a comprehensive system for child protection which will be facilitated by effective partnerships with all relevant stakeholders. Additionally, by adopting AI and machine learning to assist efforts in tackling infringement of children’s rights in the virtual world, we in the UAE are determined to continue leading these efforts by example”, Lt. Col. Humaid said.

According to Lt. Col. Al Tamimi, the Ministry aims to enhance the capabilities of professionals in the field and support their mental health, improve cooperation nationally and internationally to combat the spread of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) and raise awareness of children’s rights, including their dignified right to grow in a moral and safe community.

Major Khaled AlKaabi Director, Child Protection Center, UAE MOI, also stressed the importance of enhancing the efficiency of child protection services.

“The online world is only becoming more contentious with child sexual abuse and exploitation on the rise, and it is our duty to enhance child protection services to prevent harm. The UAE Child Protection Strategy is designed to ensure children’s rights receive the precedence they deserve in a holistic manner”, said Lt. Col. Al Tamimi.

Speaking at the launch event, Irakli Beridze, Head of the Centre for AI and Robotics at UNICRI, highlighted the use of AI as the most progressive way to safeguard children online and endorsed UAE’s strategy.

“Through a cohesive collaboration between law enforcement agencies, technological solutions and machine learning – the versatility to monitor children’s activity online is far more concise. The UAE’s Child Protection Strategy is a practical action plan which essentially facilitates the prevention, detection and most importantly, prosecution of the perpetrators behind online child abuse”, said Beridze.

The newly unveiled Child Protection Strategy builds on the UAE MOI’s global leadership advocacy, capacity-building, operations and policy-making relevant for improving the protection of children online. UAE MOI is a Member of the Virtual Global Task Force, Permanent Board Member of WePROTECT Global Alliance, and co-founder of AI for Safer Children Initiative.

NordVPN Study: 90% of Hong Kong residents use smartphones while on the toilet

This is the biggest result compared to other countries surveyed

LONDON, May 9, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A recent survey by the cybersecurity company NordVPN revealed that as much as 90% of Hong Kong residents bring their smartphones with them into the toilet. That’s the biggest result of all other surveyed countries. While most Hong Kong people (61.1%) scroll through social media during that time, barely anyone thinks of growing threats online and hackers’ attempts to compromise people’s phones.

“Hong Kong people seem to need smartphones a lot. Our previous survey already showed that people of Hong Kong spend a lot of time online — more than 44 years per lifetime, which is a half of their lives,” says Ugne Mikalajunaite, a country manager for Hong Kong at NordVPN. “Even though the majority (80%) name smartphones as the device that tracks their online behavior the most, Hong Kong residents still haven’t developed good cyber habits to protect their online lives,” she says.

Using social media and gaming — top activities for Hong Kong residents while on the toilet

The majority of Hong Kong people admit that their time on the toilet is mostly spent scrolling through social media (61.1%), gaming (40.3%), and watching videos, movies, or television programs (36.5%).

Among other activities, Hong Kong residents also listen or read news (34.3%), call and message people (31.3%), and shopping online (21.4%).

  • Keep apps and the phone’s operating system (OS) up to date. Don’t skip software updates.
  • Do your research. Never download unknown apps — read up on them first.
  • Avoid unofficial app stores. They’re more likely to contain malware-ridden apps.
  • Avoid using unknown Wi-Fi. And always use a VPN when you do.
  • Be vigilant. Don’t click on suspicious links, don’t give out your number to strangers, and be wary of unknown numbers.

Methodology: The survey was commissioned by NordVPN and conducted by the external company Cint on February 13-22, 2023. The survey’s target group was residents of France, USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore aged 18+ (nationally representative), except for Lithuania (18-74) and the sample was taken from national internet users.
