International Big Data Expo Opens in Southwest China

GUIYANG, China, May 27, 2021 — The 2021 China International Big Data Industry Expo (CIBDIE), the country’s leading big data expo, kicked off on May 26 in Guiyang, capital city of southwest China’s Guizhou Province, according to China International Big Data Industry Expo Organizing Committee.

Founded in 2015 and officially upgraded to a national expo in 2017, the big data expo has become an international and professional platform for the development of big data as well as an industrial bellwether.

The three-day event is jointly held by the local government as well as the country’s top economic planner, industrial and information watchdogs. With support from the China’s commerce ministry, the expo features domestic, global, industrial and business perspectives.

Under the theme "Embrace digital intelligence, Deliver new development", the event will include conferences, exhibitions, new product launches, contests and other activities.

This year’s expo is scheduled both online and offline, seeking open cooperation and joint development of different stakeholders. The online expo offers services like online communication, online exhibition, business negotiation, online forum and guest promotion, presenting a variety of exhibition functions.

Guiyang City and Gui’an New District, as the core areas of the national big data (Guizhou) integrated pilot zone, have always been pioneers in big data development, posting leapfrogging progresses in industrial growth. More than 5,000 big data enterprises and 117 industrial giants were here by the end of 2020. The added value of digital economy reached 164.9 billion yuan (about 25.8 billion U.S. dollars), accounting for 38.2 percent of the regional GDP, and over half of the region’s real economy featured big data elements.

The specific activities of the expo are as follows:

Conferences: the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as 7 high-end dialogues and 13 professional forums.

Exhibitions: Online and offline exhibitions to display new technologies, new products, new schemes and new applications in the field of big data. A section on big data’s role in rural revitalization is also established.

New launches: Releases of the expo’s leading science and technology achievement award, research on methods and paths of data factor market, global prediction system of COVID-19 and the dictionary of big data encyclopedia, etc.

Competitions: The 2nd industrial APP integration innovation competition and the 6th Guiyang big data and network security elite confrontation exercise.

Activities: a series of activities such as meetings and exchanges, talent introductions, night talks, salons and dialogues, promotions and contract-signing, strategic cooperation, organized visits, etc.

US politicization of tech supply chains is both risky and costly

BEIJING, May 25, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on US politicization of tech supply chains is both risky and costly.

In 2019, the Trump administration unleashed its "tech war" on China, with the goal of blocking China’s development in high tech sectors by preventing targeted companies from procuring components manufactured in the United States.

As the White House ramped up its hostility toward Beijing, it intensified its measures. The most notable target was the Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei, which was first placed on the commerce department’s "entity list" putting it under export controls. Later, it was also subjected to the "foreign direct product rule," which unilaterally banned overseas companies who use U.S. patents in their own semiconductor production from supplying the company.

Even though President Joe Biden has since taken office, he has yet to reverse these decisions. Instead, he has pressed on in the mold of an "America First" policy when it comes to semiconductors with the goal of consolidating a U.S. monopoly of the industry and controlling "technologies of the future."

What have been the consequences of these decisions? In fact, they have had adverse effects for America and the world at large.

The aggressive politicization of the semiconductor sector against the world’s second largest economy is disrupting a global supply chain, reversing globalization and creating an effect of "localization."

China has massively boosted its investment in semiconductor capabilities on a whole-of-society scale, while America has created political risks for tech firms who rely on their supplies. On an organizational level, firms have been bulk buying semiconductor and lithography manufacturing equipment from the Netherlands, Japan and South Korea, as well as panic buying semiconductors to hedge against potential future restrictions. Companies are losing confidence in traditional suppliers.

This uncertainty has created a global shortage in semiconductors, which is causing risks to the global economy. The shortage has created delays in the manufacturing and supply of electronic consumer goods and automobiles, which has forced many factories around the world to postpone production and furlough workers. For example, Nissan’s Sunderland factory in the U.K. was forced to slow production for three weeks due to a lack of semiconductors. Another consequence has been growing inflation, which undoubtedly contributed to the unexpected surge in the U.S. consumer price index, which jittered global markets last week.

These adverse outcomes show that weaponizing technology supply chains against China will not make America better off. Localized supply chains are more expensive and will cost the U.S. considerable market share as Beijing develops its own industry. This year, China will commence production of 7-nanometer nodes and quickly cede dependency on lower nodes, with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) investing in a $2.35 billion chip foundry in Shenzhen set to produce 28-nm integrated circuits. This has allowed companies such as Huawei to continue developing their 5G networks despite U.S. sanctions.

In China, government investment in the sector has already amounted to $150 billion, while earmarked investment for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) extends to $1 trillion. While this is seen as a political necessity, few disagree that an open-ended global industry remains preferential. Leading foreign semiconductor companies still seek to compete within the Chinese semiconductor market due to its growing economy and surging demand, showing the dangers of upheaving this market.

In this case, it is worth noting that one thing is certain when it comes to current U.S. policy: Weaponizing semiconductors creates a "lose-lose" situation, carving up a global industry into localized spheres, creating a fractured market and raising prices. That being said, it will still not block China’s technological advances.

For all involved, it is a costly and unpredictable path with knock on effects all the way down to the ordinary consumer.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, May 21, 2021 — Dubai Customs is hosting the 5th WCO Global Authorized Economic Operator Conference in cooperation with the UAE Federal Customs Authority, to be held virtually between 25 and 27 May 2021. EZGO Announces Local Government Successfully Accepts Application of the State First-class E- Motorcycle Manufacturing Qualification

CHANGZHOU, China, May 14, 2021EZGO Technologies Ltd. Guiyang Is Applying Big Data to Social Governance Modernization

"Guiyang has benefited from big data to a significant extent," In Guizhou Big Data Exhibition Center, the staff showed how Guiyang promotes the intersection of data-driven solutions and rural rejuvenation, industrial development, social governance, etc.

In terms of social governance, Guiyang actively utilizes big data to enhance the management, service, decision-making capacity. The local government has launched Traffic Cloud, Police Cloud and other applications. "With the continuous modernization of government, the public well-being has greatly boosted," the staff told Huanqiu.com.

In order to understand how Guiyang integrates big data with social governance, the journalist at Huanqiu.com also visited Guiyang Fire-Rescue Department Block Data Center and communicated with firefighters.

"We need a high volume of printed material to formulate a rescue plan in the past, but we can currently finish relevant work from the One Picture Big Data Platform. Thanks to the data-based solution, we monitor the community in real time and spot fire hazards in advance," Ding Xiang, political committee member of the Guiyang Fire-Rescue Department said.

According to him, when a fire disaster arises, in addition to reporting by calling, the local citizens can also utilize WeChat one-click alarm. "When calling us, some people may fail to describe the situation due to tension or dialects. By comparison, through WeChat one-click alarm, it is possible for us to grasp the situation more efficiently," Ding added.

In March 2020, Guiyang launched the Digital Smart Guiyang WeChat One-click Alarm Platform. After a person logs in, the Fire-Rescue Department can automatically obtain the relevant information of the user. What the user needs to do is filling in the information required and uploading a scene photo.

After receiving the WeChat alarm, the firefighters can grasp all the necessary data of the fire hazard such as location, nearby population and buildings in the data center. Ding told Huanqiu.com: "Through this data platform, the commander will plan the best route. More importantly, we can accurately organize rescue team, save time and avoid waste of resources."

It notes that the Fire-Rescue Department also monitors the firefighters’ physical health condition in real time based on the sensors. When a firefighter stays in the same place or falls, the commander will take measures in time to ensure his safety.

"Thanks to big data, the Fire-Rescue Department significantly enhances fire prevention and management capacity. It seems that we just save two minutes, but this period means a lot to firefighting," a commander of Guiyang Fire-Rescue Department, Nie Sheng told Huanqiu.com.

According to the municipal government, Guiyang will continue to promote the integration of big data and fire control, fully modernize the social governance.

By April 2020, Guiyang Smart Fire Control Data Platform has built a comprehensive perception system involving data of 259 high-rise buildings and 776 units. Due to the data-based solution, the Fire-Rescue Department has avoided more than 2,000 potential safety hazards by timely warning.

Taking the local Huaguoyuan Community as an example, this community has applied the big data platform for two years. The number of fire disasters ensuingly fell by 19.8% year-on-year, and direct property losses fell by 30% year-on-year.

FORESEE MCP Products Employ Stacked Packaging for Improved Performance, Reduced Power Consumption, and a Superior User Experience

Was there ever a time when "what you’d been told" and "what you saw" were totally at odds with each other? We often hear people say that Russians are tough people who keep bears as pets, or that Germans are rigid and have no sense of humor. When it comes to China, for many people, words like "conservative" and "lack of freedom" probably spring to mind. But is that really the case?

 

On the question-and-answer site Quora, the question "which country have you visited that turned out to be nothing like how it is depicted" created quite a lot of buzz recently. The top post is about China. The user said that having grown up in the 1980s and ’90s, when China-U.S. relations remained very tense, China was described to him at school in "villainous terms." But after moving to the country, he discovered that it was nothing like he’d been led to believe: Though China differs from the U.S., Chinese people are friendly, live normal lives and care about others. In the meantime, the nation is staunch in upholding their national sovereignty. At the end of his answer, the user encourages people not to believe the hype and to come and see things for themselves. Many in the comments section shared his opinions about China.

Under the same topic, a user from the U.K. shared how his opinions of people in the U.S. changed after spending a few months there. Similar stories about countries like Russia and Iran were also commented on.

Such answers are not unexpected. Take China for example: Vloggers from other countries have recorded the real China with their cameras, discussing how safe they feel walking alone at night, or the dramatic transformations of Chinese villages. What they saw themselves turned out to be completely different from what they’d heard.

Be it the huge gulf between "what others say" and "what you see," or the transformation of opinions after experiencing, these all speak to one point: The indirect information we get, either filtered through other people’s views or influenced by politics, are always limited. For Chinese, every day they see how diverse and inclusive the country is. They have also seen firsthand the efforts that China is making on various fronts. But it’s easy to understand why people from different cultures, used to different political systems, misunderstand China. When you don’t know a country, especially one hugely different from your own, it’s a lot easier to go along with a stereotype than it is to try and understand.

Even a coin has two sides, and in the same way, stereotypes can never capture every aspect of a vast country. The world is such a big place that it’s worth putting aside your preconceptions and experiencing it with an open mind.
