University of Technology Sydney wins Australian Sustainability Award with world’s first 3D-printed air diffusion system

SYDNEY, April 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Systems Reef 2 (SR2), a collaboration between UTS and BVN Architecture, reduces the carbon footprint of commercial buildings through energy-efficient design and materials.

UTS and BVN Architecture have won the Green Building Material/Product Award at the most recent Australian Sustainability Awards for their 3D-printed air diffusion system, designed to reduce the carbon footprint of commercial buildings.

Many buildings currently use traditional air distribution systems which have not seen significant innovations over the last one hundred years. These systems are not tailored to each space, and they cannot be reconfigured to adapt to the changing ways we work or live.

UTS and BVN found inspiration in nature as they redesigned air diffusion from the ground up. Eschewing traditional methods of design and manufacture, the team built a system that mimics the respiratory system of frogs; SR2 uses an aerodynamic design with fine pores to ‘mist’ cool air rather than dump it into one spot.

Informed by a circular economy approach, UTS and BVN chose recycled PETG plastic so that SR2 was fully recyclable at the end of its life.

“The building industry is one of the highest contributors to global waste, one of the biggest consumers of energy and materials and has some of the most significant contributions to CO2 emissions,” says Tim Schork, chief investigator and Adjunct Professor at the UTS School of Architecture.

UTS and BVN designed SR2 for the purpose of retrofitting existing building stock with outdated air distribution systems that use significant amounts of electricity.

“Compared to Australia, there are even more buildings globally whose air diffusion systems need to be renewed. It’d be great to see SR2 implemented in other parts of the world,” Tim says.

Now patented, SR2 is one step closer to market-readiness.

“SR2 can be installed in any office environment, but is not just for these spaces. It can be installed in supermarkets, hotels, commercial stores, and homes where there are many existing air duct systems that can be replaced,” Tim says.

The University of Technology Sydney is a leading university of technology, ranked 15th in the world and 2nd in Australia in the 2022 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. For more information, visit uts.edu.au.

On March 24 (Friday) at the Uiwang Research Facility of Hyundai Motors & Kia Corporation, DEEPX announced its execution of the MOU on AI semiconductor collaboration use for robot platforms, with the representatives of both companies including Lok-Won Kim CEO, and Dong-Jin Hyun, Robotics Lab leader of Hyundai Motors & Kia Corporation.

DEEPX develops AI semiconductors and implements AI technology used in various electronic devices that exist outside of the data center with high-performance and low-power advantages. Currently DEEPX has 4 kinds of AI semiconductors that are optimized for performance and function that can match with various edge and server AI application fields and have secured more than 150 patents, both domestic and international, that are related to fundamental AI semiconductor technology. Domestically, DEEPX is evaluated as the leading AI semiconductor fabless company, and DEEPX is targeting the global edge AI market.

During the Proof-of-Concept (PoC) conducted over the past year by Hyundai Motor Group and Kia Robotics Lab, DEEPX demonstrated outstanding AI performance by providing higher AI accuracy with INT8bit than FP32bit. In addition, it has been proven that various robot application AI algorithms developed by the Robotics Lab can be smoothly operated, making it possible to implement AI models required by robots. In particular, it is evaluated as suitable for mass production of battery-powered robot products due to its exceptionally high AI computational efficiency and low power operation.

This agreement aims to cooperate on the application of DEEPX’s AI semiconductor technology to the robot platform currently under development with the aim of commercialization by Hyundai Motor Group and Kia. To achieve this, the two companies will incorporate AI functions for robots into DEEPX’s AI SoC (System on Chip) products, verify their operability and mass production for deployment in the final products developed by Robotics Lab. In this way, the AI technology can be implemented in the robots developed by the Robotics Lab.

Lok-Won Kim, CEO commented: “According to the global market research data, the size of the global smart mobility is expected to grow to be about 145 billion dollars by the year 2027. For the AI semiconductor, the core technology of this market, there are currently no optimized solutions for each detailed fields, therefore it is possible to lead the market if a mass production-ready solution is prepared. Having technology cooperation with the global market leader Hyundai Motors and Kia Corporation will present DEEPX’s AI semiconductor an opportunity to become the core solution of the future market in the related field. This is a great inspiration for us. DEEPX has succeeded in commercializing NPU IP in 2021, and I am grateful to earn the chance to demonstrate the test for mass-production as soon as we reach NPU development milestone this year”.

Dong-Jin Hyun, leader of the Robotics Lab of Hyundai Motors & Kia Corporation said, “I expect we can lead the excellent robotics service development in both performance and price by combining the SW technology of the Robotics Lab and DEEPX’s HW technology.” He also added, “As soon as we confirm and examine the superiority of DEEPX NPU chip products, we will carry on with further cooperation and apply it to the robot that is under research and development.”

Neo4j Hires Google Executive Sudhir Hasbe As Chief Product Officer

Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure Veteran to Scale Offering as Enterprises Increasingly Turn to Graph as a Cloud Database System of Record

SAN MATEO, Calif., April 4, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Neo4j®, the graph database and analytics leader, announced today that Sudhir Hasbe has joined the company’s executive leadership team as Chief Product Officer (CPO). Hasbe will oversee the company’s software portfolio across its native graph database and data science offerings, reporting directly to CEO and Co-Founder Emil Eifrem.

Hasbe previously led Product Management for Google Cloud’s Data Analytics Platform which includes industry-leading products like BigQuery, Looker, Dataproc, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Composer, Data Fusion, and Dataplex. Under Hasbe’s leadership, BigQuery grew to one of the largest analytics platforms with tens of thousands of customers, 110TB of data being processed every second, hundreds of customers with petabyte-scale datasets, and powering more than 700 ISV offerings. Hasbe also led acquisitions of Looker, Dataform, Cask, and CompilerWorks to enhance Google Cloud’s Data Analytics offering. Hasbe was also an executive sponsor of several of Google Cloud’s marquee enterprise customers and ecosystem partners. Prior to Google, Hasbe led software engineering at Zulilly, transforming it into a state-of-the-art data-driven organization. Previous to Zulilly, Hasbe spent seven years at Microsoft where he led product management for Xbox entertainment services, Azure Data Marketplace SQL Azure, and BizTalk Server.

Hasbe succeeds former head of product Philip Rathle, who assumes a new executive leadership role as Chief Technology Officer to help evolve the vision of the company and technology and to expand Neo4j’s relationships across a broader group of stakeholders. Neo4j under Rathle’s ten-year tenure shaped the graph category, grew the company’s offering from a single database product to a full graph stack including native graph storage, data science, analytics, and visualization, and established Neo4j as a leading player in the modern database landscape. The company’s offerings today are used by 75 percent of the Fortune 100 and more than 250,000 data developers, data scientists, and architects across hundreds of Fortune 500 companies, NGOs, and more.

“Sudhir’s track record and innovation with cloud hyperscalers comes to us at a time when graph technology is reshaping the database market and accelerating advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning in ways that are helping enterprises solve their biggest data challenges,” said Emil Eifrem, CEO and Co-Founder of Neo4j. “Sudhir’s expertise builds on what Philip has achieved as we drive the next level of transformation as a company and a category. I couldn’t be happier to have both leaders by my side.”

Hasbe’s appointment follows a series of milestones for Neo4j, which achieved double-digit growth in 2022 after crossing $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in 2021. This included doubling its enterprise cloud and graph data science offerings. In December 2022, the company was recognized for the first time in the Gartner®️ Magic Quadrant™️ for Cloud Database Management Systems, which also was the first time that native graph vendors more broadly had been included. Neo4j announced its general availability last November of Neo4j 5, the company’s next-generation cloud-ready graph database, the 2023 appointment of Alyson Welch as Chief Revenue Officer, and a major expansion of Neo4j’s graph enterprise deployment offering in March 2023.

“As the world becomes more connected, so does our data, making the relationships between both data and metadata matter more than ever,” said Hasbe. “Graph enables organizations to find hidden relationships and patterns across billions of data connections. It’s why I’ve come to Neo4j, and why graph will one day be foundational for every modern enterprise.”
