ASUS Goes Ape with new BAPE^® Edition Vivobook S 15 OLED

ASUS and A BATHING APE are about to rock your world with a supped-up laptop! The two brands are collaborating to bring you signature ASUS quality infused with BAPE^®style. The collaboration brings BAPE’s design style to ASUS’s popular Vivobook S 15 OLED. The collaboration isn’t just about aesthetics either. It’s bringing a real punch in terms of internals. Downfall Vulnerability in Intel Chips Raises Security Concerns

A recently discovered vulnerability in Intel chips, named “Downfall,” has the potential to expose millions of users to cybersecurity threats. Cybersecurity researcher Daniel Moghimi, who is associated with the University of California and Google, discovered the major vulnerability. The vulnerability affects a large number of Intel chips produced over the last decade.

The vulnerability centres around the ability of malicious programmes to access data belonging to other applications. Therefore, it poses significant risks to user privacy and security. At the core of “Downfall” is the exploitation of the “register buffer” feature present in modern processors. With it, processors are able to optimise certain operations for faster execution.

What Is a Register Buffer?

Imagine a computer processor as a super-fast brain that helps your computer think and do tasks quickly. This brain needs to remember things temporarily while it is working, just like you might jot down a few things on a sticky note while solving a puzzle. The “register buffer” is like that sticky note – it is a temporary data storage place in the processor where it keeps important information for a short time to help with tasks. Sometimes, the processor may also keep sensitive information like passwords in the register buffer.

So here is the catch: if a hacker finds a way to look inside this register buffer, they might see your password or other sensitive information they’re not supposed to have access to. So, the “Downfall” vulnerability is like discovering a hidden crack in the wall next to the shelf where the processor keeps its sticky note. If someone figures out how to use that crack to take a peek at the content of the sticky note, they could get their hands on sensitive information such as your online bank password and more.

The Potential Impact of Downfall

As you can see, the impact of this vulnerability is far-reaching, particularly for the cloud computing industry. Many servers are using similar setups built on Intel and AMD processors to run workloads, it stands to reason that since the vulnerability affects a swatch of processors, these cloud setups and the businesses that use them could be at risk of a major breach. If these servers are susceptible to Downfall, hackers could have a field day, stealing sensitive information from high-profile organisations worldwide.

According to Intel exploiting this flaw is not exactly a walk in the park. While Intel acknowledged the issue, they mentioned the discovery of “Downfall” happened under very specific conditions – not exactly what hackers encounter in the real world. Newer Intel chips, including Alder Lake, Raptor Lake, and Sapphire Rapids, are reportedly not susceptible to this vulnerability. You may check for the full list of affected devices here.

Preventing Vulnerability and Mitigation Strategy

Intel has released a microcode fix to patch up this vulnerability. While Intel claims that most workloads will not slow down, some specific activities such as heavy data processing might be affected. So, the trade-off here is between keeping your data safe and not compromising device performance.

The discovery of the Downfall vulnerability in Intel chips is a significant concern for cybersecurity. It showcases the delicate balance between performance optimisation and security, highlighting the need for continuous vigilance and adaptation in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

The Alienware Aurora Gets A Makeover – Inside and Out!

Alienware isn’t shying away from proving that Gamers can be stylish too. No, no, they’re not going into streetwear like other gaming brands (not yet… anyways). Instead, the company has revamped its Alienware Aurora Desktop with a whole new design with familiar design cues and a sleeker form factor.

The new Alienware Aurora R16 drops all pretensions for a sleek, minimalist design focused on performance. The new R16 comes with a smaller overall size but doesn’t sacrifice the volume. In fact, it maintains the same volume as the R15. It’s also easier to store with a more uniform shape. The biggest change? Well, the signature “Stadium Ring” is now on the side. Alienware has designed the Aurora R16 to catch your eye from the side this time. The stadium ring surrounds the intake vents of the new Aurora R16.

Speaking of intake vents, the Aurora R16 is designed with optimised airflow for better cooling. The new design takes in air from the front via vents nestled in the stadium ring. The top vent can be optimised to either draw in cool air or expel heat depending on how you configure your fans. The chassis itself is built to include anywhere between 2 to 4 fans depending on your configuration.

The Aurora R16 comes with a motherboard based on the Intel Z960 chipset. Alienware has customised the board to maximise performance both in terms of thermals and convenience. It comes with liquid cooling options for the CPU in addition to the standard 240mm heat exchanger. The system is built to support DDR5 5600MT/s memory for intensive tasks. It also comes with Killer E3100G Ethernet which supports bandwidths of up to 2.5Gbps over ethernet. Wireless connectivity runs on Killer’s AX1675 Wi-Fi E which supports WiFi 6E and the system also supports Bluetooth 5.3.

The R16 still comes with a bevvy of I/O ports including three USB-A and a single USB-C on the front panel for quick and easy access under the AlienFX enabled Alien head power button.

There will be multiple configurations of the Alienware Aurora R16 available depending on your region. In Malaysia, the Aurora will be launching with a configuration featuring the Intel Core i7F processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD and 1TB HDD storage. This will be complemented by an NVIDIA RTX 4070.

Pricing & Availability

The Alienware Aurora R16 will be available soon in Malaysia. Dell Malaysia hasn’t announced an availability date just yet. However, the system is now available on the US Dell online store with prices starting from USD$1,749.99 (MYR7,999).

In Malaysia, the Aurora R16 will be priced at MYR10,599 (USD$2,318.78) with the specs mentioned previously and 2 years of Dell Premium Support.

Acer’s Powerhouse Thin & Light – the Swift X 14 – is Now Available in Malaysia with Prices starting at MYR5,999

The Swift X 14 was announced earlier this year at Acer’s next@acer event alongside CES 2023. The laptop continues to build on the Swift lineup’s heritage of strong, durable builds and portability. Acer Launches New TravelMate Laptops and Veriton Desktops – More Plastics, yet More Sustainable, More Durable

Building laptops made for businesses is a rather straightforward process. The recipe is simple – build it like a tank for durability, ensure that it’ll last an entire business day on a single charge, ensure that the hardware is protected against any possible cyber-attacks and mishaps, make it powerful enough for all kinds of workload, and make it easy to work with for the IT department. All these things are plenty easy to achieve with modern technology.

That is not to say that laptops and desktops that are made for business use cases are boring. Take the TravelMate and Veriton line-up that Acer just launched in Malaysia today, for example. Instead of using the usual all-metal material that is rather popular these days and is proven to offer durability like no other, they chose to make them differently.

Acer TravelMate Series

The Acer TravelMate series for 2023 is made up of the TravelMate P2, P4, and P6. Of course, with the TravelMate series laptops, you get a selection of display options between 14-inch and 16-inch (TravelMate P2, P4), or a 14-inch 2.8K OLED (P6). You also get to choose a convertible (TravelMate P4 Spin), for extra flexibility. All of them come with a 16:10 aspect ratio displays for added productivity and visibility on your display. If you really need, you can even spec your TravelMate business laptop with a discrete GPU in the form of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2050.

They are all powered by Intel’s latest 13^th Generation Intel Core with vPro technology for that extra layer of protection for your data. You get up to 1TB of storage and 16GB of DDR5 RAM. Of course, these can be easily upgraded by your IT department when required. All of them also comes with Windows 11 Pro as standard. Obviously, they need to offer stable, reliable connection everywhere you choose to work from and thanks to WiFi 6, networking will not be an issue. The Travelmate P4 and P6 also comes with Windows Hello biometric security measures to both protect your work and data from prying eyes.

Everything mentioned above is rather expected though, especially for laptops made for businesses. What is less expected is the build material you get with the Acer TravelMate series. While the TravelMate series’ various chassis are made mostly from metal materials, Acer has also managed to make entire laptops with up to 30% of PCR plastic materials into the build. The trackpad found on the laptops are made of 100% OceanGlass material, or ocean bound plastic (OBP) materials.

To keep the devices running as long as possible in between service intervals, Acer has innovated on the cooling system a little bit. The TravelMate series offers something called the Acer Dust Defender. It is a clever fan system that ensures that the laptop can deliver as much performance as possible, as long as possible without any thermal throttling issues. The clever system automatically spins the fans in a counter-clockwise manner to disperse any accumulated dust to an outlet port every 6 hours to keep the fan build-up to a minimum even in extended use cases.

Acer Veriton Series

When you need something more beefy, more permanent, and even more compact for your workspace, you need the Veriton series desktops and All-in-One (AIO) PCs. The Veriton S and Veriton X series are compact performers in their class for all kinds of work and industrial environments. The Veriton Z sereis and Vero Mini are also perfect for any sort of office space requiring a more integrated solution. For more the professionals that needs more processing power, the Veriton K8 series.

For the compact performers, you get to spec your Veriton PC with up to a 13^th Generation Intel Core i5-3400 CPU with the vPro platform for added security. You also get up to 512GB in SSD storage and up to 8GB in DDR4 RAM for your compact Veriton desktops and AIO. Of course, all of them comes with Windows 11 Pro as standard.

For the beefy Veriton K8 series, you want to set aside at least MYR 4,599. LOQ’d & Loaded! Lenovo’s New Entry Level Gaming Laptop is Available in Malaysia

A Gamer’s Laptop strides a very fine line between being powerful and affordable. In recent years, the price point for gaming laptops has increased dramatically. In many cases, gamers are spending between MYR5,000 to MYR8,000 for a decently specced gaming laptop. On the other hand, they can spend up to MYR 15,000 just for a gaming desktop. Realising this, Lenovo has introduced a new gaming laptop sub-brand called LOQ, pronounced similar to LOCK.

Lenovo’s LOQ laptops are built to bridge the gap between entry and pro-level gaming setups. They provide a more affordable option while not compromising on the power that gamers need to run their AAA titles. However, these laptops may sidestep some gaming luxuries like per-key RGB.

The new lineup of LOQ gaming laptops making its debut comes with NVIDIA Laptop GPUs ranging from the NVIDIA RTX 3050 to the newly announced RTX 4060. They’re equipped with MUX switches which use NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus feature to bypass the integrated GPUs during gaming and heavy GPU work. This allows the laptops to achieve higher frame rates as the GPUs interface directly with the display panel. When not gaming, these switches allow the integrated CPU to take over providing longer battery life.

These GPUs are complemented by either a 13th Generation Intel processor or a Zen4 touting AMD Ryzen processor. On the RAM side of things, there’s support for up to 16GB DDR5 RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage. When it comes to display there are 15- and 16-inch variants with IPS displays with support for up to 165Hz refresh rate and 100% sRGB gamut coverage.

Design-wise, the LOQ gaming laptops draw inspiration from Lenovo’s successful Legion lineup. Crucial elements like the hinge, keyboard and mousepad placements are similar to the LOQ’s sister lineup. The keyboard has options for 4-zone RGB backlighting while maintaining Legion’s signature 1.5mm key travel and feel. The chassis has all the flair of a Legion device and even comes in the signature gunmetal black colour.

The new Lenovo LOQ gaming laptops are now available in Malaysia via Lenovo Exclusive Stores and official stores on Lazada and Shopee with prices starting at MYR3,699.

[Computex 2023] MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport – Still MSI, More AMG

A co-branded electronics product is nothing new. In the case of MSI’s latest collaboration with Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, the motorsport division of the Mercedes-Benz brand, the concept was explored years ago by Acer and even ASUS with luxury brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini. The MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport edition is technically the first product of its kind with the Mercedes-AMG badge though.

MSI’s Stealth 16 is a potent gaming laptop with rather powerful internals. You get Intel’s 13^th generation Core i9 (up to) that is paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series GPU for smooth, responsive AAA gaming. You do need that kind of power when the display fitted on this 16-inch platform is a 4K 16:10 OLED panel. To keep everything running optimally, the MSI Cooler Boost 5 system with five heat pipes dissipating heat via dual fans should keep everything breezy and cool.

Of course, the internals have to be as powerful as the heart that lives inside the racer that is the Mercedes-AMG GT2, the official racecar that will borne the MSI branding on track. The exterior of the Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport edition is courtesy of Mercedes-AMG’s know how in material science. It is a magnesium-aluminium alloy chassis that is rigid, durable, yet lightweight; all the hallmarks of a great racecar. To pay homage to Mercedes-AMG, the chassis is finished in Selenite Grey design with AMG’s exclusive Rhombus patterns alongside an Mercedes-AMG Motorsport logo to show that this gaming laptop means business.

Alongside the exclusive design, the limited edition package will include an exclusive box design, for keepsakes, a matching mouse and mouse pad, an exclusively designed USB drive, a carrying pouch for the laptop, post cards, and a number of cable ties to complete the Mercedes-AMG experience. No you do not get a car when you buy the MSI Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport edition. Mercedes-Benz did not say anything about getting a free gaming laptop when you buy one of their AMG-line cars though. They also did not mention how much the laptop will be and when it will be available. If we have to guess, it will be expensive, and it should be available in the coming months. Acer’s Predator Helios Neo 16 Lands in Malaysia with Prices Starting at MYR4,899

Acer’s recently announced Predator Helios Neo 16 is now available in Malaysia – a mere two weeks after its international launch. The new addition to the Predator Helios lineup brings all the signature Helios performance and design ethos at an even more affordable price point. There will be two variants available in Malaysia. Both come with different specifications and cater for different gamers.

The first variant, the PHN16-71-54A6 comes with an Intel Core i5-13500HX and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX4050 with 6GB DDR6 VRAM and is complemented by 8GB of RAM and 512GB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage. The Predator Neo 16 gets even more power with the PHN16-71-77HU variant which brings the Intel Core i7-13700HX and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX4060 with 8GB GDDR6 VRAM. This is complemented by 16GB of RAM and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage. Both versions support up to 32GB of RAM.

On the display end, both come with 16-inch displays with 100% coverage for the sRGB gamut, a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 165Hz refresh rate. The main difference between the two is the type of panel used. The i7 version comes with a WQXGA (2560 x 1600) panel with Acer’s ultra-slim design while the i5 version comes with a WUXGA (1920×1200) panel with the same design.

It goes without saying that both versions of the Predator Helios Neo 16 come with Intel’s Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX 1650i for the best WiFi connectivity for gaming. They also come with Killer Ethernet E2600. When it comes to ports, it comes with a complete array of HDMI, USB-C with Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2, 1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 and a combo audio jack.

The ASUS Zenbook S 13 Just Set The Standard for Thin and Light Laptops

Thin and light laptops have never been more relevant. In the wake of the pandemic, we’re often finding ourselves working remotely. This has changed what we’re looking for in a laptop. ASUS has decided to embrace this reality with its thinnest-ever laptop with the Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304). But that’s not all for the new Zenbook S 13 OLED, it’s also the most sustainable laptop yet from ASUS.

Redefining Thin & Light with a 1cm Profile complemented by a 1kg Weight

The Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304) isn’t ditching the premium build and materials we love from ASUS. It ups the ante with a precision CNC-machined lid and keyboard deck. The magnesium-alloy lid is designed and machined to hold a Full HD, IR camera while reducing the thickness by 30%.

ASUS has also optimised the internal components of the new Zenbook. Using circuit boards with fewer layers and higher wiring density and more transistors, they have successfully reduced the bottom half of the laptop by 25%. However, they’ve kept performance in mind and have included an ultrathin fan that increases airflow for better cooling.

Even the keyboard deck has been slimmed down by 25%. This is done with a precision machined alloy and a super thin glass layer for the mousepad.

More Sustainable than Any ASUS Laptop

ASUS’s new Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304) is also upping the ante when it comes to sustainability. The magnesium-aluminium alloy used in the laptop is a sustainably sourced post-industrial recycled (PIR) alloy. Post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics are also incorporated in the laptop’s build. This is primarily seen in its keycaps and speakers. The latter specifically uses ocean-bound plastics.

ASUS has also created a special manufacturing process that they claim is greener than ever before. Their exclusive plasma ceramic aluminium material is made with pure water and electricity and omits the use of harmful organic compounds, strong acids and heavy metals. Instead, they use a low-impact bath-based method which gives similar results to harmful chemical treatments. These manufacturing choices have been recognised with the EPEAT Gold certification.

The Zenbook S 13 OLED is still sturdy and has increased wear resistance, corrosion protection, thermal management and hardness. It’s even certified with MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability.

Performance on-the-go with Intel Core Processors & a Complete set of I/O

The Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304) isn’t just resting on its laurels. It comes with the latest Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. These 13th Generation Intel Core processors bring impressive performance while being more power efficient with up to 20 watts of boosted performance. These processors are complemented with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and an ultrafast PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD. The SSD comes in 512GB and 1TB configurations.

ASUS isn’t ditching critical I/O ports for clout with the Zenbook S 13 OLED. The laptop comes with a full complement of I/O ports. These ports include two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB Type-A port, an HDMI 2.1 port and a 3.5mm audio jack. The USB-C ports are also used for charging the slim laptop and support connectivity with 4K external displays. This comes in addition to the Windows Hello-enabled FHD IR camera and WiFi 6E support with ASUS WiFi Master Premium.

Completing the Zenbook S 13 OLED offering is a 16:10 ASUS Lumina OLED display. The 2.8K display comes with a 0.2ms response time and a Delta E value of less than 1 which guarantees colour accuracy. It also covers 100% if the DCI-P3 gamut is Dolby Vision and VESA DIsplayHDR True Black 500 certified. Completing the multimedia package is a Harman Kardon-certified audio system with immersive Dolby Atmos sound and a smart amplifier combined with ASUS Audio Booster which can boost the volume by up to 5.25x.

The ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED will be retailing internationally with prices starting at USD$1,399. It will be available in Basalt Gray or Ponder Blue.

More Style, More Power with the Dell Precision Lineup

Thin and light isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of cutting-edge technology and laptops. In fact, we’d be thinking the exact opposite! Historically, a high-performance laptop has always been synonymous with thick, bulky laptops. But that would also mean that designers, programmers, and video editors – among others – are stuck putting the breaking back in backbreaking work. However, Dell set out to change that a few years ago with their Precision lineup. Now, with the latest line of Precision laptops, they’ve managed to marry the two and inject some finesse.

The Dell Precision Laptop series is getting supercharged with more power in its stylish chassis. The new, extensive lineup will be equipped with Intel’s latest 13th Generation Core processors. Complementing this will be the cutting-edge NVIDIA RTX 5000 Ada Generation Laptop GPUs. These systems are configured to empower creatives, data crunchers, engineers and designers to work on the go with little to worry about. Coming with 14-,15-,16- and 17 displays, the laptops are built for immersive productivity. These productivity-focused 16:10 OLED displays can also be professionally calibrated for colour-sensitive workflows covering the sRGB and DCI-P3 gamuts. They also come with 4K resolution with HDR support.

The Precision Laptops are also fitted with the latest when it comes to connectivity with options for WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and 5G. They are also augmented with advanced thermals to endure resource-intensive workflows and increased durability with MIL-STD certification.

Diversifying the Dell Precision Setup

In addition to the Dell Precision laptops, Dell’s lineup is also available for desktops and server-grade setups. The Precision Tower brings all the ethos and performance of Dell’s Precision laptops into a familiar desktop tower. Fully equipped with the best in connectivity, the Precision Tower skews away from Intel Cores to more capable Intel Xeon processors for an extra kick when it comes to power. They also come with NVIDIA RTX professional or AMD Radeon Pro graphics prepared for higher performance.

Together with the Tower, Dell is also bringing the Precision line up to server racks with an ultra-scalable 2U Precision 7960 rack. With this setup, you can work on- and off-premises with the same power-packed setup while keeping sensitive data securely locked away. They come equipped with Intel’s W790 chipset with Intel Xeon Processors and professional grade NVIDIA RTX and AMD Radeon Pro graphics.
