Huawei vows to empower ASEAN’s green development with digital power innovations

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 16, 2021 — Global leading ICT technologies provider Huawei will leverage its digital power innovations to enable ASEAN’s cooperation on climate change and green development, said Jeffery Liu, President of Huawei Asia Pacific at the online ASEAN-China Digital Economy Development and Cooperation Forum 2021 on Friday.

Climate change and environmental issues are becoming global challenges. Though carbon emissions declined over the past year due to the economic slowdown and worldwide lockdowns, emissions are rapidly rebounding as economies reopen. Shifting to a circular economy and achieving sustainable development is now a common goal for all countries.

Potential climate change has a significant regional impact with six of the 20 most vulnerable countries in the world being ASEAN member states. ASEAN has taken actions to address climate change through various environmental, economic and social activities over the years. Thailand, for example, has set a target of reaching peak carbon emissions in 2030 and then achieving net zero emissions in 2065.

This morning Jeffery Liu, President of Huawei APAC, shared his vision for a green industrial revolution with carbon neutrality enabled by innovative technologies.
This morning Jeffery Liu, President of Huawei APAC, shared his vision for a green industrial revolution with carbon neutrality enabled by innovative technologies.

"Globally we need a green industrial revolution with the goal of carbon neutrality. As the digital economy grows, accelerating emission reduction could also help countries to manage the risk of trade barriers and secure more free trade agreements," said Jeffery Liu.

ICT technologies are important enablers of energy conservation and emissions reduction in other industries. It is estimated that the reduction in carbon emissions in other industries enabled by ICT technologies will be 10 times the amount of carbon emitted by the ICT industry itself.

"Huawei has been leveraging its extensive experience in power electronics and energy storage as well as technical expertise in 5G, cloud, and other innovative technologies, to develop its digital power business and provide digital power solutions for different industries," said the Huawei Asia Pacific President.

To promote renewable energy, Huawei has deployed its digital power solutions in more than 170 countries and regions, serving one third of the world’s population. As of December 2020, these solutions have generated 325 billion kWh of electricity from renewable sources, and saved a total of 10 billion kWh of electricity. These efforts have resulted in a reduction of 160 million tons in CO2 emissions.

In Singapore, for example, Huawei FusionSolar Solution has supported Sunseap Group, a solar energy solutions provider, to build one of world’s largest offshore floating Photovoltaic (PV) farms. With 13,312 solar panels, 40 inverters, and more than 30,000 floats, this five-hectare sea-based solar plant is estimated to produce up to 6,022,500 kWh of energy per year, supplying enough power for 1250 four-room public housing flats on the island and offsetting an estimated 4258 tons of carbon dioxide.

"Huawei is committed to promoting green integrated ICT solutions to help other industries conserve energy and cut emissions," said Jeffery Liu, "We will cooperate with ASEAN to minimize the carbon footprint by leveraging clean power generation, electric transportation, and smart energy storage, for an energy-efficient, eco-friendly low-carbon society."

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres collaborates with ABB for artificial intelligence energy optimisation pilot

Pilot to be carried out in two phases over 12 months as STT GDC seeks to innovate to reach its sustainability goals

SINGAPORE, July 15, 2021ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), one of the fastest growing global data centre operators headquartered in Singapore, announced today that it is collaborating with ABB, a technology leader driving digital transformation across industries, to conduct an artificial intelligence (AI) energy optimisation pilot in Singapore. The objective of the pilot is to leverage AI and machine learning (ML) technology and advanced analytics to optimise energy use within a data centre and reduce a facility’s overall carbon footprint.

"STT GDC is excited to collaborate with ABB on this pilot as we transition our data centres to be net carbon-neutral by 2030," said Daniel Pointon, Group Chief Technology Officer, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres. "Our group’s AI roadmap will take a big leap forward with this pilot program and focus on optimising our data centre’s energy utilisation. During the review of the pilot results, we will also assess future AI-based applications such as predictive maintenance, capacity management, security analytics and other business processes in our considerations."

The pilot will span two phases – an initial data exploration, modelling and validation phase, followed by deployment of AI control logic in a live data centre environment. The pilot aims to achieve at least 10 percent reduction in energy usage by the cooling systems, which contributes most to the consumption of electrical power in a data centre after our customer’s IT equipment. Optimising the cooling efficiency will in turn improve power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reduce the carbon footprint, with an estimated reduction of 1,100 tons of carbon in the atmosphere for every 10MW of IT load utilised, which is equivalent to saving approximately 18,000 trees.

Going further than previous AI research work constrained to white-space of data centres, STT GDC’s pilot is taking a holistic approach and developing AI neural-network models for the entire DC cooling plant including the upstream chiller and distribution systems. The AI project is also unlocking new opportunities for efficiency improvement at a granular level within the data centre. With the ability to glean AI-generated insights, leveraging cutting-edge ABB Ability™ Genix for industrial analytics and AI, STT GDC can effectively track and analyse the wealth of data generated by monitoring systems in the data centre, and better facilitate dynamic cooling optimisation to reap the desired outcomes.

"We look forward to supporting the STT GDC team in their efforts to drive digitalisation and energy efficiencies," said Madhav Kalia, Global Head of Data Center Automation at ABB. "At ABB, we have a strong track record of supporting data centre operators with our best-in-class technology solutions. We are committed to exploring the synergies between our offerings with STT GDC as it embarks on an ambitious plan."

As one of the fastest growing operators, STT GDC is committed to pushing the boundaries in innovation and setting new benchmarks for the wider industry. The vast amount of data that can be captured and harnessed in a live data centre environment makes for a strong base for AI applications which can also be applied to other facets including capacity planning, risk mitigation and predictive maintenance. This, and other research and development initiatives around alternative energy, water efficiency, construction technology and IT, are being carried out by STT GDC’s research and development team based in Singapore.

"In view of growing data demands from end users and emerging business applications that require increasingly higher computing power, the resources that data centres consume have the potential to increase if not appropriately addressed. As a long-term participant in the data centre industry, players like STT GDC must take the lead, maintain operational excellence, and fully align with national and international climate change agendas such as the recently announced Singapore Green Plan 2030. We remain committed to our principles for long-term value creation and goal of contributing towards a more sustainable global economy," Pointon added.

This initiative by STT GDC comes in the wake of its pledge to achieve carbon-neutral data centre operations by 2030 with energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy being key to the Group’s sustainability ambitions. The AI project will be jointly developed by STT GDC and ABB. It will be an on-premise solution that will tightly integrate to the existing ABB Ability™ Data Center Automation system on site, which provides comprehensive monitoring and control of the entire data centre infrastructure.

TES Closes Deal On 10,000 sqm Battery Recycling Facility With Europe’s Largest Seaport

– The deal between TES and the Port of Rotterdam will bolster Europe’s capacity to recycle lithium batteries –

ROTTERDAM, N.Y., July 12, 2021 — Today TES, one of the world’s largest providers of sustainable technology lifecycle services, has announced it has agreed to a deal that secures the future of a 10,000 square metre (approx. 110,000 sq. feet) recycling facility in the Port Of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport.

The facility, strategically located adjacent to the waterways of the port of Rotterdam and with an option to extend onto a neighbouring plot that will increase the site to over 40,000 square metres (approx. 430,000 sq. ft), already has a basic waste license to receive, store and forward lithium batteries and to manage electric vehicle batteries and battery production scrap as well as a license to shred alkaline batteries.

The site extension is planned to be fully operational by late 2022 and will be the first lithium battery recycling plant in the Netherlands, complimenting the two other TES lithium battery recycling facilities in Grenoble (France) and Singapore.

The TES site in Grenoble was one of the first recycling sites to use an inert shredding process that safely crushes lithium batteries and developed a number of key patents for hydrometallurgical processes.

The expertise gained in France played a key role in TES opening Southeast Asia’s first lithium battery recycling facility in Singapore in March 2021. This state-of-the-art facility has the daily capacity to recycle up to 14 tonnes of lithium batteries — the equivalent of 280,000 smartphone batteries.

These existing facilities will support the development of the new, larger-scale site in the Port of Rotterdam. The combined capacities of the three facilities will make TES one of the largest service providers of lithium battery recycling globally as well as one of the largest generators of commodity materials produced from the battery recycling process.

This deal is part of an ongoing commitment from TES to improve the collection and recycling of portable and industrial batteries in Europe and supports the European Union’s goals laid out in the European Green Deal.

It is also a strategic move in preparation for the huge rise in global demand for lithium batteries as car manufacturers increase their electric vehicle outputs — which are predicted to increase 14-fold by 2030 (compared to 2018 levels).

A report from Circular Energy Storage1 in December 2020 explained that Europe is currently under capacity for sustainable lithium battery recycling, and more capacity is needed to meet waste generation by 2030.

1 https://circularenergystorage.com/reports

According to figures from the European Commission2, the EU could account for 17% of the global demand for lithium batteries by 2030, the second highest share worldwide.

Thomas Holberg, Global Vice President of Battery Operations at TES commented, "We have a vision to be a global sustainability innovator, and our unwavering ambition to turn the Port of Rotterdam site into a state-of-the-art European battery recycling facility is key in delivering that strategy. Once up and running, we will have up to 10,000 tonnes of shredding capacity per year and a subsequent hydrometallurgical process which focuses on the recovery of nickel, cobalt, and lithium as a precursor feedstock for the battery industry."

In response to rising demand, the European Commission has proposed modernising EU legislation on batteries as part of its Circular Economy Action Plan3. This includes goals for batteries that are more sustainable throughout their entire life cycle — which is key for the European Green Deal and will contribute to the EU’s zero pollution ambition.

Jean-Christophe Marti, Senior Partner and CEO at Navis Capital Partners, added, "With this investment, TES deepens its commitment to a global network of sustainable battery recycling offerings that addresses the challenges around the lifecycle while positioning TES as a trusted partner in closing the loop for our customer’s battery supply chain."

Securing the future of this facility is welcomed by the Port of Rotterdam and is another example of their continued focus on supporting the development of circular industries within the port.

Allard Castelein, CEO at the Port of Rotterdam, commented, "We are working not only towards a net zero CO2 emission port and industry in 2050 but also looking at ways to make the industry more circular. Therefore, besides working on projects regarding, for instance, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage, it is important to take significant steps to establish circular production processes. The TES project in Rotterdam is exactly that. This could very well become the largest European facility for recycling batteries from electric cars."

Holberg concludes, "Our mission at TES is to ‘close the loop’ on lithium battery production by encouraging reuse and improving the collection and recycling of the scarce metals and materials they contain. Our commitment to this facility in the Port of Rotterdam is a clear indication that we are choosing to invest in our future now and to increase capacity in the European battery recycling supply chain."

  • By 2030, 215 to 300 million electric vehicles (EVs) will be on the road. By 2040, this number is expected to increase to 900 million.
  • Global demand for batteries is set to increase 14-fold by 2030 (compared to 2018 levels), mostly driven by electric transport.
  • TES officially took over the assets, employees, the site and its permit on 15 June 2021 from Battery Recycling Services Netherlands. The recycling site is on a 10,000 sqm property in the Port of Rotterdam and has an extension space of 30,000 sqm.
  • TES intends to reinstate the business and will begin plans for a capacity extension on the neighbouring 30,000 sqm plot for a recycling and repurposing centre for lithium batteries.
  • In March 2021, TES opened a multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-art facility in Singapore to cover Southeast Asia. The facility has the daily capacity to recycle up to 14 tonnes — the equivalent of 280,000 lithium smartphone batteries. A second battery recycling plant is set to go live later in 2021 in Shanghai (China). The site in the Port of Rotterdam will increase the capabilities and capacities in the European region. A video explanation of the recycling process can be found online: https://www.tes-amm.com/our-resources/tes-battery-recycling-facility-singapore
  • TES acquired the assets of a European battery recycling company in Grenoble (France) back in 2019. The site, operational since 1993, has been one of the first recycling sites using an inert shredding process to crush lithium batteries and developed a number of key patents for hydrometallurgical refining processes. The know-how gained in France over the years has been key for the latest projects in Singapore and will support the new, larger-scale site in the Port of Rotterdam.
  • Sustainable batteries are produced with the lowest possible environmental impact, using materials that have been obtained with full consideration of social and ecological standards, are long lasting and safe and can be repaired or reused and repurposed.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has on many occasions stressed the need for greater efforts to protect the ecological environment, with Xi taking his inspiration from classic works and looking to promote the shift towards a greener, low-carbon lifestyle to ensure harmony between humans and nature.

Xi quoted from the ancient Chinese classical text ‘Zi Zhi Tong Jian’, or ‘Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance’, first published almost a millennium ago, in a speech delivered at the opening of the Beijing Horticultural Expo back in April 2019.

During this speech, Xi acknowledged that: "industrialization, while generating unprecedented material wealth, has incurred serious damage to Mother Nature."

These remarks came against the backdrop of growing concern over the effects of climate change, as well as worries that fossil fuels could soon run out if humans continue to burn at the current rate, while key resources such as land, water and energy are all becoming more limited.

"’Well-measured use of natural resources’ is the key to ecological conservation," Xi told the expo.

"We need to promote a simpler, greener, and low-carbon lifestyle, oppose excessiveness and wastefulness, and foster a culture of living green and healthy," the president said.

"Looking up at night, we are awed by the many stars in the sky. Planet Earth is the only home for mankind. We must protect this planet like our own eyes, and cherish nature the way we cherish life," Xi said.

China’s latest five-year plan also paves the way for its promise of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) vows to lower energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) and carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by 13.5 percent and 18 percent, respectively, during the next five-year period.

In the past 10 years, China has ranked first globally in terms of the increase in forest resources, with its afforestation area exceeding 70 million hectares. Meanwhile, 90 percent of terrestrial ecosystem types and 85 percent of key wild animal populations are under effective state protection. China has also pledged to increase the forest stock volume by six billion cubic meters by 2030 from the 2005 level and bring its total installed capacity of wind and solar power to over 1.2 billion kilowatts.

Organizations increasingly demand IT products that are more sustainable. The challenge for most purchasers is to verify that sustainability claims made by the IT brands for their products actually are correct. With TCO Certified, independent verification is not optional, it is always included. Compliance with all criteria is independently verified throughout the life of the certificate ensuring that consumers and professional purchasers are given accurate, comparable information.

"Annually more than 20,000 hours are spent verifying products as well as the factories where they’re made according to the criteria in TCO Certified. We know that a mere self-declaration is not enough to drive change — product testing at independent test laboratories and factory inspections by independent auditors are critical," says Sören Enholm, CEO of TCO Development, the organization behind TCO Certified.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is the first brand whose servers meet the tough criteria in TCO Certified for data center products.

"We expect more brands to follow. The interest in our data center product categories is high, both from the industry looking to apply for TCO Certified for their products, and from the purchasing community asking for products with independently verified sustainability claims," continues Sören Enholm.

"In our Product Finder, you can search for certified products and have access to data backing the sustainability of those products. Our new Product Watcher functions also make it easy for buyers to track sustainability measures and product categories of interest," says Sören Enholm.

Toward sustainable IT products

With over 25 years of experience, TCO Certified is the world-leading sustainability certification for IT products. Our comprehensive criteria are designed to drive social and environmental responsibility throughout the product life cycle. Covering 11 product categories including displays, computers and mobile devices, compliance is independently verified, both pre- and post-certification.
