OPPO A79 5G Released in Malaysia; Priced from RM1,199

Hot off the global announcement of the OPPO A79 5G, OPPOMalaysia has officially announced the availability of its latest affordable smartphone hero – the A79 5G.

The A79 5G comes with pretty commendable specs when it comes to performance. It comes with 8GB RAM that is complemented by 256GB of internal storage. You’ll also be able to get a little bit more performance with RAM Extension. OPPO’s proprietary Dynamic Computing Engine is touted to ensure overall smoothness and stability in everyday scenarios.

The OPPO A79 5G boasts a unique Glowing Feather Design, available in Dazzling Purple and Mystery Black. According to OPPO, the design is inspired by mechanical watches. The finish provides a diamond-like appearance and a luxurious dial design on the back cover.

Weighing only 193 grams and measuring 7.99 mm in thickness, the A79 5G is not just about aesthetics; it offers a comfortable grip. It’s also got an IP54 rating meaning that it can withstand everyday splashes and dust. The smartphone features a 6.72-inch large FHD+ Sunlight Display with a top-centre punch hole, ensuring an immersive gaming and audio-visual experience. With 680 nits peak brightness, reading text even in bright sunlight becomes a breeze.

To complement the display, the A79 5G features new Dual Stereo Speakers, providing up to 86% more volume compared to the previous generation. The upgraded Ultra Volume Mode increases sound output by up to 300%, ensuring an immersive entertainment experience.

The OPPO A79 5G comes with a 50-megapixel AI Camera, a 2-megapixel Portrait Camera, and an 8-megapixel Selfie Camera. The super-resolution algorithms allow for capturing 108MP Ultra-Clear Images. Creative features like AI Portrait Retouching, Portrait Mode, Ultra Night Mode, and Selfie HDR further enhance the imaging experience.

Equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, the OPPO A79 5G ensures all day usage. Even if you’re running low, OPPO’s 33W SUPERVOOC flash charge technology will give you 100% charge in about 74 minutes.

The OPPO A79 5G is available in Dazzling Purple and Mystery Black at the recommended retail price of RM1,199. Starting 11th November 2023, customers can make purchases through the OPPO Official Online Store, Lazada, Shopee, My OPPO Space, OPPO Brand Store, and OPPO Authorized Dealers.

The Oppo A79 is the latest mid-range smartphone from the brand and brings along decent specs at a modest price.

This smartphone is no slouch when it comes to performance. It’s powered by the Dimensity 6020 SoC, ensuring smooth and responsive operation. With 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, you’ll have ample space for your apps and data. Need more storage? The A79 allows expansion up to a whopping 1TB via a microSD card.

The Oppo A79 boasts a 6.72″ 90Hz FullHD+ LCD display with Panda Glass protection. It’s not just big; it’s bright, with 680 nits peak brightness. With a pixel density of 391 ppi, this screen offers remarkable clarity. Oppo proudly markets it as a “Sunlight Display,” promising that you can enjoy every detail even in the brightest sunshine. Plus, it’s Widevine L1 certified, ensuring you can stream 1080p content on platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the A79’s camera setup. It features a 50MP primary camera, utilizing the Samsung ISOCELL JN1 50MP sensor. In addition to that, there’s a 2MP depth sensor for those striking bokeh shots and an 8MP selfie camera for your self-portraits. With this phone, your photography needs are well covered.

But that’s not all. The Oppo A79 also comes with dual stereo speakers for immersive audio. And for those moments when you need extra volume, the Ultra Volume Mode goes beyond the 100% volume level, reaching up to 300% for speakers and 200% for earpiece calls.

Pricing & Availability

The Oppo A79 is priced at INR19,999 ($240/€225), which is equivalent to about RM1,142. It is now available for purchase in India through various channels, including Oppo’s official Indian website, Flipkart, and Amazon India.

You can choose from two striking colours: Mystery Black and Glowing Green. The Glowing Green variant boasts what Oppo calls a “Glowing Feather Design,” adding a touch of elegance to your device.

While the exact availability in other regions, including Malaysia, is yet to be confirmed, it has been listed on the SIRIM database, suggesting it may arrive in Malaysia very soon.

Honor Play 50 Plus Brings Affordable Performance in China

Honor is back with its latest budget-friendly 5G smartphone – the Honor Play 50 Plus. Following the success of the Play 40 Plus, released last October, this new iteration aims to raise the bar in affordable 5G smartphones.

The Honor Play 50 Plus is equipped with the midrange Dimensity 6020 SoC that should offer snappy performance and should be able to handle some heavier games. It comes with two RAM options, 8GB and 12GB, and a generous 256GB of storage. Complementing this hardware is Android 13-based MagicOS 7.2.

On the display side of things, the device boasts a sizeable 6.8-inch FullHD+ LCD screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate. A centrally placed punch-hole houses an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

Looking at the back of the smartphone, you’ll see a familiar design reminiscent of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series. It features two large left-aligned circles within an accented housing. Within this is the dual camera setup featuring a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

The Honor Play 50 Plus isn’t going to die on you suddenly thanks to its humungous 6,000mAh batter. It supports 35W fast charging but there is no indication if the smartphone supports wireless charging.

It does, however, include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, dual speakers, and Hi-Res Audio support. It also comes with a rare 3.5mm headphone jack.

Connectivity-wise, the phone is equipped for the future with 5G support, making sure you stay connected at high speeds. It also comes with support for WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 and GPS support.

Pricing & Availability

The Honor Play 50 Plus comes in four stylish colours – Jade Green, Starry Purple, Galaxy Silver, and Midnight Black. The 12GB/256GB model is available for CNY1,399 (approximately $195/€185/INR16,275/MYR907.20). It’s already available on Honor’s official store in China. Although, the 8GB/256GB version is nowhere to be found yet.

It is unclear if Honor will be bringing the smartphone to Malaysia. However, if we go on past trends, we may not see it in Malaysia. However, with the current market – never say never.
