ViewSonic’s myViewBoard Sens Brings UK’s First AI-powered Classroom to Smestow Academy

Creating An Optimal Learning Environment with Better Wellness and Safety

BREA, Calif., March 22, 2022ViewSonic Corp., a leading global provider of visual solutions, has partnered with the Smestow Academy in Wolverhampton, England, as the first school in the UK to deploy the AI-powered myViewBoard Sens analysis tool in the classroom. Through the real-time insights generated by the intelligent sensor, the school can ensure the classroom follows the wellness compliance, increase students’ engagement, and facilitate a safe and active learning environment for the best possible learning outcome.

ViewSonic's myViewBoard Sens brings UK's first AI-powered classroom to Smestow Academy, facilitating a safe and active learning environment for the best possible learning outcome.
ViewSonic’s myViewBoard Sens brings UK’s first AI-powered classroom to Smestow Academy, facilitating a safe and active learning environment for the best possible learning outcome.

"In the last few years, we had looked for a total Edtech solution to improve the overall learning experience of our students. In 2021, we started working with ViewSonic to implement over 100 ViewBoard interactive displays in our classrooms. Harnessing the power of myViewBoard Sens is our latest step in this journey," said Jonathan Stokes, Assistant Headteacher, Smestow Academy. "myViewBoard Sens offers students and teachers reassurance of a safe and engaging learning environment so we can deliver the best education possible. It is an exciting piece of EdTech innovation that we are proud to be trialing and rolling out in our classrooms."

"ViewSonic is passionate about providing comprehensive educational technology solutions for schools to drive better learning outcomes and attainments," said Peter Claxton, Senior Director of EdTech Solutions, ViewSonic. "We are incredibly pleased to be working with Smestow Academy to implement myViewBoard Sens in a real-world setting, helping the schools to adapt to the new era, and creating a highly engaged and safe learning environment. Through this pioneering project, we plan to introduce this next-gen technology to more schools around the world, opening up new learning opportunities for students, teachers, and schools."

In this project, myViewBoard Sens was installed on the ViewBoard, which sits at the front of a classroom, to analyze the wellness compliance of the indoor space. The school and teachers can get an instant view of the status through a dashboard app. The embedded sensor detects and evaluates the airborne transmission risk according to five indicators – temperature, humidity, occupancy rate, audience masked, and close contacts between students. If the rating of wellness compliance decreases, it means the wellness level is at risk and the myViewBoard Sens would suggest actionable insights on the dashboard in real-time for the school and teachers to take action. This makes sure the social distancing in the classroom follows the government’s protocol, reducing the risk of virus growth.

From the dashboard, the teachers can also get insights into student engagement at a group level to foster an active learning environment. From sensing the room’s temperature, color temperature, ambient lighting, to analyzing students’ attentiveness through articulated human pose estimation, the insights indicate the factors that may affect students’ focus. Teachers can look back and see how students responded to the class and make changes to their lesson plans or teaching approaches if necessary. Moreover, all data are generated and processed within the sensor locally without using individual profiles and without relying on the cloud, ensuring the highest levels of security and anonymity.

As a future-proof education solution, myViewBoard Sens helps the school evolve with the changing world and helps educators achieve the best educational outcomes in an optimal learning space. Moving forward, ViewSonic will continue to work with Smestow Academy to gather more feedback on the use of technology and explore more possibilities to provide greater benefits in education.

On March 23, day 1 of BETT Show 2022, Peter Claxton, Senior Director of EdTech Solutions, ViewSonic will deliver a keynote speech – The Art of the Possible (Innovation and AI) at 4pm, and on March 24, day 2 of BETT Show, Peter will host the EdTech Talk with the Smestow Academy at 3pm.

JS Global’s SharkNinja Wins Seven NPD Group Home Industry Performance Awards For Market Share Gains

  • NPD recognized SharkNinja for recording the largest dollar share increase in the U.S. or Canada markets for seven key home industry categories
  • The recognition from NPD Group brings to eight the number of well-known industry awards that SharkNinja has received so far this year
  • Industry recognition for SharkNinja this year builds on 19 respected industry awards received in 2021

NEEDHAM, Mass., March 18, 2022 — SharkNinja, an innovation leader in the consumer floorcare and small kitchen appliance industry, and part of JS Global Lifestyle Company Limited (Hong Kong: 1691), a world-leading producer of small household appliances, recently won seven Home Industry Performance Awards from the NPD Group, in recognition of the company’s expanding market share for key product categories in North American markets.

NPD recognized SharkNinja for recording the largest dollar share increase in the U.S. or Canada markets for seven key home industry categories in 2021, compared to 2020, a testament to the continued popularity and success of the brands. The awards were announced during The Inspired Home Show, hosted by the International Housewares Association in Chicago from March 5-7.

The NPD awards further reflect Ninja’s strong performance in the U.S., where it has held the No. 1 rank in small kitchen appliance brands for the last two years[1]. In the U.S., the Ninja brand was recognized for the largest share gain in four categories of small appliances: kitchen electrics; cook and heat, or "heated"; electric food prep, or "motorized"; and coffee and beverage[2]. Ninja also received recognition for expanding its share of two U.S. housewares categories: total housewares; and bakeware and cookware.

In the Canada[3] market, Ninja was recognized by NPD for expanding its share of the kitchen electrics categories.

"We’re excited that SharkNinja’s growth and leadership in key categories is being recognized by these Home Industry Performance Awards. This is further demonstration of SharkNinja’s ability to achieve success across our product lines, while achieving growth in existing categories, new categories, and through international expansion," said Mark Barrocas, global president of JS Global, and president of SharkNinja. "This builds on our outstanding track record in 2021, when the Shark and Ninja brands were collectively recognized with 19 respected industry awards. That pace continues in 2022, reflecting the extraordinary value we provide to our consumers," said Barrocas.

The recognition from NPD Group brings the number of well-known industry awards that SharkNinja has received so far this year to eight. Last month, Ninja won the overall air fryer category in the "2022 Allrecipes Community Choice Awards", a product category that has quickly become a staple in many U.S. households as consumers continue shifting towards healthy cooking options and continue cooking more at home in general, a trend that is extending beyond the pandemic.

The awards haul for SharkNinja so far in 2022 builds on the strong performance in 2021, when the company was recognized both for its growing product portfolio within existing categories, as well as its expansion into new categories.

The Ninja brand portfolio of small kitchen appliances won more than 10 awards in 2021. Ninja’s air fryer category received repeated accolades throughout last year, with Popular Mechanics recognizing the Ninja Foodi 13-in-1 Dual Heat Air Fry Oven as its "Best Versatile Cooking Appliance" in the "Gear of the Year: The Best Products We Tested in 2021" list. Multiple Ninja coffee machines also received awards recognition in 2021, including the Ninja DualBrew Pro Specialty Coffee System, which won "Best Coffee Maker" from "The Rolling Stone Essentials 2021." Meanwhile, versions of the Ninja Foodi NeverDull Premium Knife System were recognized in the House Beautiful "Live Better Awards 2021" and the Good Housekeeping "2021 Kitchen Gear Awards."

Shark, the No.1 vacuum brand in the U.S. for the last 4 consecutive years[4], also garnered repeated industry recognition last year. Shark ended 2021 with at least seven awards in the cleaning category, including the "Good Housekeeping 2021 Cleaning Awards" for the Shark Wandvac System, which captured "Slimmest Stick Vacuum." The Shark Steam & Scrub captured "Deep-Cleaning Steam Mop." Other products to capture industry accolades include the Shark VACMOP Pro, which won "Best Vacuum-Mop Hybrid" from Better Homes & Gardens. By combining powerful suction for dry debris and spray mopping for wet stuck on messes, the VacMop has received broad support from retailers in the U.S. and has been well received by consumers as well since its launch in early 2020. Aside from award recognition, the product has become a best seller in retailers’ floor care departments and has generated record setting sell-outs during television direct sales airings.

The SharkNinja brands also received awards and recognition internationally in markets such as Europe and Japan. In Japan, SharkNinja’s expanded product portfolio has been led by growth in lightweight cordless vacuums. One notable award is for SharkNinja’s local product, the Shark EVOPOWER System Advanced (CS651J). Japan’s "Kaden Hihyo" (Home Appliance Criticism) magazine awarded it the "Best Buy High-End Stick Vacuum" award, noting the product is only competitor to have both usability and cleaning performance for high-end cordless sticks.

The strong performance of Shark and Ninja brands in 2021 and so far in 2022, across all the categories where they participate, highlights the category leadership of a wide variety of SharkNinja products. Shark, Ninja and the entire JS Global group continue to hold a leading position in the global small household appliances market thanks to an intense focus on quality, reliability, consumer satisfaction and accessible innovation to consumers. By focusing on its three-pillar growth mantra of growth in existing categories, growth in new and adjacent categories, and growth in international markets, JS Global is bringing innovative and design-driven products to audiences around the world.

Dot Inc. Announces the World’s First Tactile Braille Display, Compatible with iPhone and iPad

  • New Dot Pad display from Dot Inc. helps blind/low-vision users feel tactile images in real-time
  • It will be showcased at the CSUN’s Assistive Technology Conference in March 2022
  • Dot Pad is now available to developer communities and early adopters on Dot’s official website

SEOUL, South Korea, March 11, 2022 — Today, Dot Inc. introduced Dot Pad, the world’s first tactile braille display for developer communities and early adopters. Dot Pad is compatible with iPhone and iPad, along with Apple’s built-in screen reader, VoiceOver. Dot’s new device offers blind/low-vision users a refreshable tactile display with the option to touch whatever is displayed on the screen, bringing the community one step closer to digital equality.

DotPad Tactile display 1
DotPad Tactile display 1

The task of creating a viable and refreshable tactile display for blind/low-vision users has posed one of the greatest challenges for developers in this industry for years. Traditionally, tactile displays only had one line, and were primarily connected with computers and phones to translate written text to Braille. However, they always lacked the technical capability to display graphical elements such as images, maps, and UI, ultimately limiting the experience. Dot Inc. aimed at and succeeded in creating the tactile display that pushes through the boundaries and expands the possibilities of digital accessibility.

Dot Pad helps blind/low-vision users render images and text from iPhone or iPad to the tactile display instantaneously. Dot Pad is compatible with devices running iOS 15.2 or later, or iPadOS 15.2 or later. VoiceOver support for tactile representations of images and graphics builds on Apple’s long history of creating and supporting accessible technology.

"Many blind/low-vision users around the world rely on iPhone and iPad, due to the industry-leading screen-reader VoiceOver," said Dot Inc. co-founder Eric Ju Yoon Kim. "We are very excited that Dot’s tactile technology is now optimized for VoiceOver, and that this will expand digital accessibility. Beyond speech or literary braille, these users can now feel and improve their understanding of images."

A new tactile graphic API was made available to iOS developers around the globe starting with iOS 15.2. Using this new API, developers and creators can supplement existing apps with tactile content as well as create new apps to utilize the full set of Dot Pad features.

"My wish is that many global developers within Apple’s ecosystem can use this API to develop games, entertainment, and educational apps compatible with our tactile display," said Ki Kwang Sung, co-founder at Dot Inc. "There is a growing opportunity for blind/low-vision users to connect through visual games and educational tools."

Dot Pad is now available to developer communities and early adopters on Dot’s official website.

Dot Inc. is providing technology support for an expanded Dynamic Tactile Device project with the American Printing House for the Blind and HumanWare slated to be launched in 2023. Learnings from the Dot Pad developer community will contribute to that project, which is considered to be the industry’s most ambitious effort in braille and tactile technology to date.

Huawei will Unveil Brand-new Networking Solutions for Home & SME at MWC 2022

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 28, 2022 — Huawei will attend the 2022 MWC held in Spain from February 28 to March 3 and release the fiber-based Wi-Fi networking solution – FTTR (Fiber To The Room) gigabit all-optical room solution, and discuss with industry partners on how to resolve the current network bottlenecks of home and enterprises and how to provide better connection experience for users.

Since the breakout of COVID-19, digitalization and intelligence have developed rapidly. People require smoother communication, more convenient life, and more efficient work. On the one hand, homes have gradually transformed from entertainment centers to diversified production centers. New services such as online education, live broadcast, 8K HD movies, immersive entertainment (VR/cloud games), and smart-home are rapidly emerging. On the other hand, digital transformation and cloudification of small and micro enterprises have become a trend. High-bandwidth and low-latency applications, such as video conferencing and cloud desktop, are becoming popular. These new services pose higher requirements on network latency, bandwidth, and jitter, bringing greater challenges to home and enterprise networks.

However, home users and SMEs are still facing problems caused by poor network experience. According to statistics, 60% of broadband faults are caused by poor Wi-Fi experience. The Wi-Fi coverage ratio of more than half of home users reaches only 55%. Some users say that the Wi-Fi rate near an access point is 500Mbps, but gradually decreases to less than 20 Mbps from the living room to other rooms. According to a survey, the current network problems are mainly caused by the following four aspects:

  1. The rate cannot reach gigabit. Due to the outdated networking cable, the bandwidth can reach only 100Mbps.
  2. Seamless roaming cannot be implemented. There are multiple indoor Wi-Fi points. Traditional networking does not support intelligent switching between devices or the switching time is longer than 200ms. As a result, services are frequently interrupted when users move around.
  3. Multi-user concurrency is not supported. If more than 100 network devices access the Internet at the same time, they will go offline frequently.
  4. Whole-home coverage is not supported. Because fibers are usually routed to ELV boxes or living rooms, Wi-Fi performance deteriorates greatly after wall penetration. As a result, some rooms have no network coverage.

Huawei’s FTTR gigabit all-optical room solution is an innovative solution for home and enterprise networking. Different from traditional networking solutions, this solution extends fibers to every room, leading the newest optical network revolution. Fibers are recognized as the fastest transmission media in the industry. With four advantages, fiber has become a "dark horse" in the communications industry. Fast speed: Fibers are recognized as the fastest transmission media in the industry and can achieve 10Gbps or even 100Gbps transmission capability. Fibers deployed in the entire home can be upgraded to 10Gbps in the future, without the need of re-cabling. Low cost: The fiber industry is mature and the market is stable. The average price of fibers is 50% lower than that of network cables, reducing the reconstruction cost. Easy reconstruction: The size of fibers is about 15% of that of normal network cables. Fibers are thin and easy to be routed through pipes. Environment-friendly: Sand (silicon dioxide) is used as raw material, which is more environment-friendly and sustainable.

In addition to the main exhibition area, Huawei will also build a gigabit Wi-Fi experience center consisting of two exhibition points: FTTR-Home for home scenarios and FTTR-SME for enterprise scenarios. Online service scenarios, such as cloud VR, remote conferencing, IPTV, and 8K HD videos, will be set up to enable users to experience smooth gigabit Wi-Fi networks onsite.

Huawei’s FTTR gigabit all-optical room solution has set off a boom in China. Chinese operators released FTTR services and launched packages in 65 provinces and cities in China last year. Up to now, the number of FTTR users in China has exceeded 150,000. In addition, 20 operators outside China have started pilot projects. About the unique features of Huawei’s FTTR gigabit all-optical room solution and the extraordinary Internet surfing experience to bring to people, February 28, 2022 MWC will give the answer.

The current leading technology most pool cleaners use is "Gyroscopic Navigation", but this technology comes with quite a few disadvantages. The inability to navigate intelligently often causes the robotic to hit the walls of the pool and low cleaning coverage – which can make the pool visually unappealing and reduce the desire to use the swimming pool for people.

Whether it’s a sweeping robot, weeding robot, window cleaning robot, or pool cleaning robot, all cleaning robots are designed to reduce the amount of labor and time necessary for that cleaning task. Automated, efficient, and worry-free cleaning is the main purpose of these types of electronic cleaning devices.

– 100% Fully Automatic & Hassle-Free Cleaning

  1. The above-mentioned military-level sonar technology which is currently mainly used for marine resource exploration, fish detection, and underground exploration. The BestRobtic is the only pool cleaning robot using this technology today.
  2. Due to each bottom of the pool having more or fewer potholes, a new altitude sensor (IMU chip) was specially designed by the BestRobtic R&D team to automatically sense the texture of the pool bottom more quickly and accurately with more precise automatic steering.
    – Compared with earlier pool cleaning devices, the use of sonar technology and the addition of an altitude sensor are technological breakthroughs that incorporate intelligent navigation and help it achieve a thorough clean. These additions bring the cleaning coverage rate up to 99.99% and guarantee the durability of the pool walls.
  3. In addition to improving navigation. With automatic obstacle sensing, automatic obstacle avoidance, automatic turning, automatic cleaning along the wall, and automatic escape (BestRobtic exclusive patent), these 5 perfectly integrated automatic functions will keep every swimming pool sparkling clean.
  4. Many swimming pool cleaning robots often get stuck on steps, corners, drainage pipes, and other obstacles inside the pool – In order to fundamentally solve this trouble, the BestRobtic R&D team spent 3 months developing an automatic escape algorithm from the data of thousands of tests, lowering the risk of the BestRobtic getting stuck by 99.99%.

Toshiba Group Publishes Sustainability Report 2021

-Strengthened sustainability promotion system to accelerate ESG and SDG initiatives throughout corporate activities-

TOKYO, Feb. 18, 2022 — Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today published the English edition of Toshiba Group Sustainability Report 2021, an annual review of policies and initiatives to advance ESG and promote achievement of the SDGs.

Toshiba Group Sustainability Report 2021
Toshiba Group Sustainability Report 2021

Toshiba Group Sustainability Report 2021 is compiled and edited by Toshiba’s Sustainability Management Division, established in April 2021 as an independent division reporting directly to the President and CEO. This new organization integrates the former sustainability promotion department, and is responsible for bringing forward-looking sustainability perspectives into management, and for promoting and advancing ESG and SDGs initiatives in all corporate activities.

In addition to reporting on Toshiba Group’s ESG initiatives in FY2020, Toshiba Group Sustainability Report 2021 covers the work of the new division to date, the reinforcement of the sustainability management structure, the formulation of Toshiba Group Sustainability Policy, the re-identification of materiality, and the revision of Environmental Future Vision 2050. These measures are briefly explained below.

1. Strengthening the sustainability management structure

Toshiba has ensured that sustainability perspectives are brought into management by setting up the Sustainability Strategy Committee. It is chaired by the President and CEO, and its members are executives responsible for sustainability, the Presidents of key group companies, and managers responsible for promoting sustainability.

Three committees operate under the umbrella of the Sustainability Strategy Committee: The Sustainability Promotion Committee and the Corporate Environmental Management Committee (established in 1991) consider specific measures to advance plans and decisions made by the Sustainability Strategy Committee, including formulating action plans and monitoring their progress. The Non-financial Information Disclosure Committee approves disclosure of ESG information for inclusion in the annual Integrated Report and Sustainability Report.

2. Formulation of Toshiba Group Sustainability Policy

As a measure to raise corporate value over the medium to long term, the board amended the Board of Directors Rules to include responsibility for determining Toshiba Group Sustainability Policy. In October 2021, the board formulated the current policy.

Basic Commitment of the Toshiba Group, "Committed to People, Committed to the Future," reflects Toshiba’s unwavering determination to contribute to society’s development through business activities. Guided by this commitment, and as a member of a society facing issues that include energy shortages, resource depletion, and climate change, Toshiba does not simply pursue short-term profits, but considers the long-term impact of its corporate activities on society, and promotes initiatives that contribute to solving social issues.

Toshiba Group Sustainability Policy will further advance this approach and strengthen activities that contribute to social sustainability. The policy is positioned alongside Basic Commitment of the Toshiba Group, management policy and Standards of Conduct for Toshiba Group as a core policy, and efforts to promote widespread awareness and compliance of the policy in the front lines of business are now underway, in Japan and overseas.

3. Re-identification of Materiality

Toshiba Group have tackled the material issues identified in 2013 by regularly confirming their status. However, response to climate change is now required on a global scale, and social issues are changing according to various perspectives as seen in the SDGs adopted by the United Nations. Toshiba Group also reviewed its businesses. Accordingly, we re-identified new material issues in FY2021.

Before re-identifying material issues, Toshiba Group extracted and organized issues with reference to the SDGs, the Global Risks Report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF), and guidelines including the SASB (*1) Standards. They were then prioritized in respect of the Group’s core businesses, and narrowed down to those requiring further consideration.

4. Revision of Environmental Future Vision 2050

Toshiba has revised Response to Climate Change in Environmental Future Vision 2050(*2), its long-term vision of environmental management from a global perspective including climate change and the circular economy, so as to further accelerate efforts to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the value chain.

Specific measures will include investments in energy-saving equipment in the Group’s business activities, the introduction of renewable energy equipment and expanded procurement of energy from renewable sources, and a focus of creating products and services that contribute to lower emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). Among other measures, Toshiba will continue collaborations with suppliers that target lower GHG emissions derived from purchased products and services, and also promote businesses in climate change adaptation measures that aim to stabilize energy supply and strengthen resilience.

Guided by Basic Commitment of the Toshiba Group, while striving to strengthen ESG activities and information disclosure, Toshiba Group will continue to contribute to solving social issues such as the SDGs through technology advances and business activities.
