“The idea for this summit came from SHEIN X designers themselves,” George Chiao, SHEIN’s U.S. president, said at the event. “We’re always looking for feedback from our designers, and several wanted an educational opportunity where they could come together, get to know one another, and learn more about how to build their brands – all while having some fun. We hope we delivered on that today, and we’ll continue to identify ways to empower SHEIN X designers and improve their experience with the program.”

The day-long summit featured designer-dedicated programming and networking opportunities, including panels with LaQuan Smith, designer and founder of LaQuan Smith; Laura Kim, co-creative director at Monse; Maeve Reilly, celebrity stylist; Gary Wassner, CEO of Hilldun Corporation; Evette, co-founder of Act of Faith and founder of EXO Cosmetics; Racquel Natasha, influencer, designer and founder of Natasia swimwear; and Josephine Skriver, model and co-founder of JOJA. There was also a performance from The Future X, where the group announced each member will be partnering with a SHEIN X designer to launch their own capsule collection on SHEIN’s platform.

Attendees onsite had the opportunity to connect with stylists, merchandisers, buyers, influencers and other industry professionals, including top performing SHEIN X designers Armand Medhiri, Kenya Freeman and Valerie Campbell of Freak City, who shared their personal experiences with the program and advice for other aspiring creatives.

“Keep going, keep going, keep going,” said Freeman, who launched her first collection with SHEIN X in 2021. “For me, my career has been a long road, with a lot of twists and turns, but when you wake up each day and know you’re doing what you’re here to do, there’s nothing like it. The SHEIN X program has opened so many doors for me, and I’ve never been more excited for what’s ahead.”

More than 20 SHEIN X designers from around the world also showcased their personal collections at the summit. Following the showcase, SHEIN X designers Danielle Brion, Veronica Diaz Montalvo and Jade Breyon were chosen for a previously announced mentorship opportunity with Kim, while SHEIN X designer Francesca Lazzari was chosen for a mentorship program with Reilly.

From just seven designers when the program launched in January 2021, the SHEIN X incubator program has grown to almost 3,000 designers globally, launching more than 25,000 original creations. SHEIN has invested more than $55 million into the program and guides participants through the end-to-end process, from product development, to manufacturing, to marketing and supply chain logistics. Importantly, SHEIN X designers maintain ownership rights to their SHEIN X designs. Since the launch of SHEIN X, SHEIN X artists and designers around the world have earned over $5 million in commission from the sale of SHEIN X products.

All of the SHEIN X Design Summit panels were livestreamed on the SHEIN app, as well as SHEIN’s official Instagram and TikTok accounts. Video recordings of the panels can be found below and photos from the summit can be found here.

WHERENESS hopes to unleash potential of 360° media for virtual tours.

KYOTO, Japan, Feb. 25, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Kyoto-based design studio ACTUAL Inc. (Headquarters: Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan. CEO: Yuki Tsuji) is releasing a new cloud service WHERENESS that will enable any user to create and share 360° virtual tours and experiences. The service was designed for museums and cultural attractions but is already finding a wider range of users. The official website launched earlier this month and a beta version of the WHERENESS application will follow this spring.

WHERENESS official website:  https://whereness.io/en

About WHERENESS

WHERENESS is a web-based cloud application that enables users to transform 360° media into interactive tours and experiences, with no special skills required.

After uploading any 360° media, users can plot a route for visitors to follow using the simple editing tools. Users can also embed text and two-dimensional images in the 360° space as they recreate an experience virtually.

WHERENESS works in a web browser and all data is saved in the cloud, meaning it can be accessed from anywhere with no locally stored files. Simultaneous online editing in teams is also being added as a feature.

Once edited, virtual experiences can be shared via URL and accessed through the web browser on any device such as a smartphone or PC. WHERENESS also supports sharing within closed groups and is the only service of its type to include paid ticketing options.

By enabling users to edit, host and share virtual experiences in the cloud, WHERENESS offers an unprecedented way for any cultural organization or physical location to simultaneously archive and share its story with the world.

Background to the Launch

Worldwide there are currently more than 100,000 art museums (*1), 2,000 art festivals, and 296,000 galleries. Using an approximate measure of frequency (*2), this produces a total of around 1.95 million exhibitions held each year. Most of these exhibitions will be dismantled after a few weeks or months, with no way to preserve the experience for future generations.

In 2017, ACTUAL Inc. joined an exhibition archive project called ART360° (Art Three Sixty) that proposes a future in which past events and artistic works are recorded and available for playback using 360° media.

One reason 360° video archiving has yet to become widespread is the high cost of production. ACTUAL Inc. realized that by lowering the cost of editing, storing and distributing 360° media, it could give more people richer ways to experience the past. These experiences can change the lives of people in the present and even improve our world today. This realization led to the development of WHERENESS.

*1 https://www.statista.com/statistics/1201800/number-of-museums-worldwide-by-region/
*2 Based on 8 annual exhibitions per art museum; 10 exhibitions per art festival; 4 annual exhibitions per gallery.

WHERENESS: An Overview

Three standout features of WHERENESS make it especially suitable for cultural organizations of all sizes:

Support for 360° video

Most applications for creating virtual tours (e.g. Street View) allow users to record and share still images only. WHERENESS enables users to upload 360° video so that experiences can include a time axis – ideal for installations and performances.

Simplified workflow

Most 360° video files are heavy and require long wait-times and high processor-power when editing. WHERENESS enables users to edit files in the cloud and export files more quickly, reducing time spent editing by around 75% while also cutting costs.

Income from ticket sales

Applications for creating virtual tours are typically designed for the real-estate market and offer no way to charge viewers for access. WHERENESS includes paid ticketing options for virtual museum tours and in future will enable actual sales of artworks and other objects in virtual space, creating additional income streams for users.

Service Availability

A Beta release is scheduled for spring 2023. WHERENESS is now accepting enquiries from potential Beta users.

Future Developments

Following a beta release of WHERENESS in spring 2023, there are plans to implement VR headset support, team management functions, timeline pop-ups, and audience analysis and reporting functions as these become necessary.

ACTUAL Inc. is also seeking the following partners:

  • Video production companies which already offer 360° recording, or are considering it.
  • Creators who already use 360° recording, or are considering it.
  • Manufacturers and distributors seeking to cooperate in developing sales channels.

Changsha symphony brings cultural landmark to stage

BEIJING, Feb. 10, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A news report by China.org.cn on the 2023 Changsha New Year concert:

Have you ever imagined what it’s like to bring to the stage a cultural landmark with 1,000 years of history at a live New Year’s concert?

This was exactly what the Changsha Concert Hall recently presented to its audience through a full symphony orchestra. The stage was set up with Yuelu Academy on screen display in the background, surrounded by replicas of lush trees and traditional buildings of Hunan province.

Yuelu Academy is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions. As the cradle of the local Huxiang culture and traditions, the academy champions the idea of staying realistic and pragmatic, which had exerted a profound influence on China’s modern history. Mao Zedong lived and studied there in his youth, and he often reflected on the idea of “seeking truth from facts,” or “Shi Shi Qiu Shi” in Chinese. The four Chinese characters were inscribed on a plaque hung in front of the academy’s lecture hall. Mao later established the principle of “Shi Shi Qiu Shi” that inspired the Communist Party of China over the past century. During his visit there in 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping hailed the academy as the birthplace of the principle of seeking truth from facts, a fine tradition of the Party.

Based on this, the symphony presents the cultural legacy of Yuelu Academy, the Party’s century-long history, as well as China’s development through its five chapters.

With a beautiful melody, Yuelu Academy opens its door to the audience. Videos played on a screen at the back of the stage accompany the symphony and its unique local sound. As they enjoy the performance, audiences could also learn about origins of the culture and history of Yuelu Academy and get a glimpse of the Party’s glorious journey.

The music innovatively infuses a classic Chinese folk song with “The Internationale” to present the Party’s arduous pursuit over the past century. Tunes like the Chinese national anthem are used to represent China’s accomplishments under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era over the past decade. In the final chapter, the inspiring music heralds China’s great journey toward national rejuvenation, presenting China’s stories to audiences from around the world.

The concert is truly an acoustic and visual feast. And it is a star-studded one featuring the China Philharmonic Orchestra. It is no doubt a standout musical work from Changsha, recognized by the UNESCO as a city of media arts. The concert is a worthy effort to use symphony to recount the millennium-old academy’s history and present China’s path of development and the Chinese spirit. Through this creative expression, the audience can understand how the Party carries forward the glorious tradition of seeking truth from facts.

The orchestra will embark on a global tour, enabling the musical piece imbued with a distinctive Chinese style to resonate with international audiences. Via the process, China’s stories will be better known globally.

SHENZHEN, China, Dec. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The 18th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF) kicked off on December 28, 2022. This year’s ICIF is held mainly offline, complemented by synchronized online exhibitions. It is estimated that over 2,500 governmental delegations, cultural institutions and businesses will attend the fair on site, while 800 institutes and enterprises will set up online booths.

The ICIF is the first cultural fair in China recognized by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI). Since its inception in Shenzhen in 2004, the fair has seen a continuous increase in exhibition scale, audience, and level of internationalization. It has now grown into a key engine for China’s cultural industrial growth, as well as an important platform and window to spread Chinese culture to the world, according to Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government.

According to statistics, every year, the ICIF gathers over 100,000 exhibits from cultural and creative industries at home and abroad, and more than 4,000 cultural investment and financing projects are displayed and traded at the fair. By participating in the event, numerous excellent overseas businesses and institutions have successfully expanded their market and found new opportunities for cooperation and development.

Notably, an International Exhibition Hall has been set up on this year’s Cloud ICIF. A total of 300 overseas cultural institutions and businesses from 30 countries and regions across the globe have been invited to the online fair. Domestic and foreign cultural products and projects are being displayed on the online platform, with a strong emphasis on promoting cultural exchange and trade between China and other countries along the Belt and Road, and expanding the international network for cultural trade.

Miao Song, founder and director of the Canada China Art-Tech (CCAT), brought along its Canadian partners Telefilm Canada, Concordia University, and The 7 Fingers. She said, “This is the 4th time we have participated in the ICIF. This year we see more participating countries and more diverse exhibits. Particularly, the technology culture products have never failed to impress me.”

In response to a question on why the CCAT takes part in the fair, Director Song believes that the CCAT shares many core values with the ICIF in supporting the growth of China’s cultural industry and assisting Chinese cultural products in reaching a global audience. She added: “The CCAT exhibits are diversified, embracing science and technology, arts, academia and humanities, and other sectors, so it fits well with the ICIF’s high-quality, diverse and comprehensive display mode.”

Additionally, this fair has opened up new avenues for attracting foreign investment and exhibitors, so as to engage more domestic and international cultural institutions and businesses, and help exhibitors accelerate their integration into China’s “dual circulation” development pattern and develop new markets. It will build itself into a significant cultural platform for international procurement, investment promotion, people-to-people exchange, and open cooperation. A total of 10,931 buyers from 108 countries and regions, like France, Germany, and Pakistan, have registered for the online fair.

Ambassador JUDYTH NSABABERA from Consulate General of the Republic of Uganda in Guangzhou said: “This year, we are honored to participate in the 18th ICIF online and offline. We hope that through this exchange, we can show our African culture, products and projects on such an excellent platform as the ICIF, and we also hope that through this ICIF we can help the development of cultural industries in China and Uganda reach a higher level.”

As a state-level, international and comprehensive fair for cultural industries, the ICIF has celebrated 17 sessions so far. It has promoted the development of cultural industry across the country as well as that of Shenzhen City. The fair has become a signature event to showcase Shenzhen’s achievements in economic, social and cultural development and an important window into this growing metropolis. Currently, the added value of Shenzhen’s cultural industries has exceeded 25 million yuan, accounting for over 8% of the city’s GDP.

Director Song Miao said, “Shenzhen is an international city with high inclusiveness and a front-runner in opening up. Boasting a large number of high-tech enterprises and a huge market, it has maintained a robust growth momentum in foreign investment and continuously witnessed an increase in the number and scale of businesses going global. The CCAT wants to further cooperate with Shenzhen businesses and institutions in film-making, film-related activities, technology development, and project venture capital investment to achieve win-win results. In addition, we would like to express our sincere thanks to and our full confidence in the ICIF’s positive role in boosting the cooperation.”

ViewSonic also collaborated with the UK Shooters to host three photography editing workshops, allowing participants to use the latest ColorPro VP2786-4K and VP2776 professional monitors to edit photos they took during the workshop.

At the other exhibition in Taipei, ViewSonic employed a “breakthrough” concept of using the three RGB colors to divide the gallery into three main sections. On top of this idea, the hybrid exhibition utilized an array of ViewSonic’s visual solutions – a LED display, projectors, monitors, ViewBoard interactive displays, and pen displays to showcase the winning works. The ColorPro Talks in Taiwan featured renowned photographers and cross-border professional creators. They shared their experiences navigating diverse art formats in different industries, from commercial shooting to filmmaking, while also providing professional tips for color editing.
