Acer’s Chromebooks Look to Empower Remote Work & Education

Chromebooks are growing in popularity thanks to their lightweight form factor and feature-packed ChromeOS. They’ve found a niche in education and work thanks to their easy to deploy, built-in security features and also their compatibility with Google’s Ecosystem. Acer has been one of the platforms ardent supporters releasing Chromebooks for nearly 5-years now. This year, Acer has streamlined and focused its offerings to cater to a niche that has emerged thanks to the realities we face as we adapt to a new normal.

Acer Chromebook Spin 513 Built to be your Kompanio-n

The Acer Chromebook Spin 513 comes in a sleek and svelte body built of durable aluminium. It runs on MediaTek’s system on chip (SoC) for Chromebooks – the MediaTek Kompanio 1380. The SoC comes with the now ubiquitous big.LITTLE microarchitecture that allows it to strike a balance between raw power and power efficiency. Acer claims that the Spin 513 will be able to withstand a full day capping out at about 10 hours of battery life.

It comes with a 13.5-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and bezels that measure only 7.7mm. The display has a 2256×1504 pixel resolution. Given its Spin moniker, it’s not surprising that the Chromebook is able to convert from laptop to tablet or even display screen (in tent mode). It also comes certified with military specc’d durability with MIL-STD-810H certification. It also comes with DTS Audio for an immersive audio experience, WiFi 6 and a Type-C USB port.

Continuing Earthion with the Acer Chromebook 315 & Chromebook 314

Acer is no stranger to building laptops that have the environment front and centre. While the new Acer Chromebook 315 and 314 may not go the strides that is cousin, the Vero lineup does, the two new Chromebook offerings come with a unique touchpad that helps recycle ocean plastics. OceanGlass is a unique material made of ocean-bound plastic waste that has been recycled to give a glass-like feel. Using this material, Acer’s two new Chromebooks deliver a sleeker, more tactile experience with their touchpads while reducing plastics in our waterways and ecosystem.

Both the Chromebooks run on the latest Intel Pentium and Celeron processors for the best battery life and performance combo. They have support for WiFi 6 and feature a pair of USB Type-C ports for extendibility. Both also boast impressive 10-hour battery life and DTS Audio. The Chromebook 315 comes with additional connectivity options including a micro SD card slot.

  • Acer Chromebook 314 CB314 3HT 01

On the display side of things, the 315 comes with a larger 15.6-inch display with an FHD resolution. It also features a dedicated Numpad keyboard and an HDR webcam with a wide field-of-view (FOV). The 314 comes with a smaller 14-inch display. Both Chromebooks come with an anti-glare coating making them a little more comfortable to use over long periods of time. They also come with options for multi-touch displays.

Acer & National Geographic Collaborate for a Special Edition Aspire Vero Laptop

Acer’s is reaffirming its commitment to the environment in a new partnership with the international scientific non-profit organisation, National Geographic. The partnership comes on the heels of the Malaysian announcement of their first laptop made with post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics – the Aspire Vero.

ASPIRE VERO NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EDITION AV15 51R 08

The Acer Aspire Vero is the first time that PCR plastics have been used to make a significant portion of a laptop. In the Aspire Vero specifically, 30% of its chassis is made using PCR plastics while its keycaps are made of 50% PCR plastics. Acer’s environmentally aware laptop is also designed to be easily upgraded and repaired.

The partnership will see a special edition of the Aspire Vero being released. This National Geographic Edition of the Aspire Vero will come in a special grey colour with design cues that represent the work that the National Geographic Society undertakes. Of course, the laptop wouldn’t be complete with the National Geographic Society’s signature yellow box. The laptop will also be shipping in a specially designed box. Its packaging is designed to be reused and repurposed after unboxing.

While the design and packaging are specially made for the collaboration, Acer has made the packaging for its Vero lineup reusable and environmentally responsible. The packaging is made of 85% recycled paper and 199% post-industrial recycled (PIR) plastics. These plastics are used specifically in the laptop sleeve and the protective sheet between the keyboard and display.

In addition to this, a portion of the sales of this special edition Aspire Vero goes to supporting the work of the National Geographic Society.

Pricing and Availability

The Acer Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition will be available starting March 2022 in France for €899(MYR4,250.83) and in January 2022 in China for CN¥5,499 (MYR3,618.42).

Acer says the laptop will be making its way to other countries across the Asia Pacific region soon.

[Video] Acer Swift X Review – Sounds Like an Entry-Level Gaming Laptop

The Acer Swift X is an MYR 4,999 thin-and-light laptop that packs a lot of power. It gets a gaming and creator grade AMD Ryzen 7 5800U CPU. On top of that, and 16GB of RAM, is a very potent NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti to boot. All of that seems like a recipe for something special.

We find that the AMD powered Swift notebook PC to be an intriguing one. Acer sells this laptop as the ideal content creation laptop for those are starting up in content creation but needs something easily portable as well.

It is sort of a spiritual successor to the Acer Swift 3X that was launched also a few months ago. The Acer Swift X shares the same build platform as the Acer Swift 3X though, which also means that it shares the same design quirks we pointed out in the Acer Swift 3X. It is a more powerful platform comparatively though.

Is this Swift X with AMD’s powerful Ryzen 7 5800U worth MYR 4,999? With the same quirks, would it be a worthy laptop of the Swift name? Should you get it as a content creator? We find out in our review of the Acer Swift X.

Acer Brings the Aspire Vero to Malaysia

We’ve been hearing and seeing more tech companies making strides to make technology greener and be more environmentally friendly. However, very few have followed through with grassroots efforts and tangible products which help them progress in their goals. At their recent next@acer, Acer announced a new sub-brand that would focus on driving their efforts in becoming a greener company – the Vero. The Acer Vero sub-brand is only one of their efforts in progressing what they call the Earthion (Earth Mission) of bettering the environment and producing technology more responsibly.

Acer announced its new Aspire Vero in Malaysia today. However, before we talk about the tech, it would be remiss of us to not highlight their efforts in bringing their Earthion closer to fruition in Malaysia. The company has adopted 15 trees in the Taman Tugu – a green lung in the nation’s capital. However, it’s not just about adopting trees, Acer is also bringing their partners and collaborators into the fold. Five of the company’s partners including PIKOM, Team Lugiami, Microsoft and the National Cancer Society of Malaysia have pledged their support for Acer’s Earthion.

Creating the Opportunity to Choose Responsible Technology

The company views the Aspire Vero as a crucial part of achieving its Earthion. The new laptop affords consumers a more responsible choice when it comes to buying laptops. The Aspire Vero incorporates post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics in its chassis and keycaps. In fact, the chassis is 30% PCR plastics while the keycaps are made of 50% PCR plastics. While it would have been nice to see Acer raise the bar higher, limitations on processes and technology when it comes to recycling these plastics force the company to still use virgin plastics for the sake of rigidity and sturdiness. However, Acer’s Aspire Vero accounts for a significant reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during production. Each unit accounts for a 21% reduction. The packaging of the Acer Aspire Vero keeps in line with the environmentally cautious nature of the lineup being made of up to 85% recycled paper pulp and using soy ink exclusively for printing.

So, what does an environmentally cautious laptop look like? Acer has intentionally made the Acer Aspire Vero take a very nature-inspired approach to texture and design. It makes the Vero both unique and functional. What’s more, the laptop isn’t sacrificing much when it comes to performance. It comes with a 15.6-inch IPS Display with Full HD resolution. The panel itself is 99% recyclable. It’s powered by Intel’s 11th generation Core processors and has up to 16GB of RAM. It also takes advantage of Intel’s Iris Xe Graphics making it capable of some graphical prowess. It comes with 512GB of storage.

When it comes to connectivity, the Acer Aspire Vero comes with support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. It also has a full array of ports including an HDMI, two USB 3.2 ports, 1 USB Type-C, an Ethernet port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has an HD webcam and a claimed 7-hour battery life.

Pricing & Availability

The Acer Aspire Vero will be available starting 11th November 2021. The i5 version will be priced at MYR3,399 while the i7 version will be priced at MYR4,299.

In conjunction with the launch, early adopters will be entitled to freebies worth up to MYR500 with every purchase. In addition, MYR100 of each unit sold will be chanelled to fund more tree adoptions in Taman Tugu.

[Next@acer] Acer Launches New Chromebooks for All Kinds of Things

Acer is big on Chromebooks, if you have not yet realised. They have one of the most complete line-ups of Chromebooks that are available for your money. With the most recent launch, they could very well be offering the most complete Chromebook line-ups you can find in the market today.

Acer Chromebook Spin 514

  • Acer Chromebook Spin 514 CP514 2HT 07
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 514 CP514 2HT 06

  • Acer Chromebook Spin 514 CP514 2HT 03
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 514 CP514 2HT 02
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 514 CP514 2HT 01

The new Chromebook Spin 514 is a 14-incher that is also a touch sensitive display. The touch sensitive display can also be tilted all the way to the back for some convertible action. It is only a Full HD panel though, so do not get ahead of yourself too much.

You still get a powerful 11th generation Intel Core i7 with the Chromebook Spin 514, which is actually a lot more power than you actually need to run a Chromebook. At the same time there is an Enterprise variant for this notebook, so a powerful CPU should not be a surprise. Oddly enough though, they designed the Chromebook Spin 514 without a fan, so the Intel Core i7 might have been tuned down anyway to keep thermals at an optimum.

Still, you are getting quite a powerful workhorse here. You have two speakers that faces upward for crisp and clear DTS Audio quality sound. For the best-in-class voice call experiences, the Acer Chromebook Spin 514 comes with two microphones as well. At the same time, the MIL-STD 810H certified construction will ensure that your Chromebook will work in any conditions and after it takes on some abuse.

If a large display is what you need in a Chromebook, then there is Acer’s Chromebook 515 that comes with a 15.6-inch IPS display. The 15-incher comes with a Full HD panel that should be ideal in most working requirements.

It also packs Intel’s latest 11th generation Core i7 processors complete with Iris Xe Graphics to boot. With up to 512GB in storage and 16GB of RAM, you should not be wanting more from your Chromebook. Considering, this is a high-end set-up for a Chromebook as well.

Of course, you also get DTS Audio for high-quality audio for your audio conferencing needs. It also packs two microphones to make your video conferencing experience the best it can be on a Chromebook. If you need some privacy, there is a webcam shutter.

Of course, the Chromebook 515 comes with MIL-STD 810H build standards. It is powerful and durable. A Corning Gorilla Glass on the touchpad should also ensure that the Chromebook outlasts any abuse you can throw at it.

The Chromebook are never meant to be ultra-powerful notebooks to take on the likes of the gaming PCs or MacBook Pros in the market. Not yet anyway. But they are made to be some of the most reliable notebooks in the market that can run on nearly anything, even a MediaTek integrated chip.

The Acer Chromebook 514 runs exactly on that. Specifically, the Chromebook 514 runs on a MediaTek Kompanio 828 octa-core processor made for computing platforms. This one is for the content creators out there, apparently.

The integrated chip also means that the 14-incher offers a battery life of up to 15 hours on a single charge. The battery can be quickly charged up to 50% within just 40 minutes. Because there is so little in the way of components, it only weighs about 1.3kg and is just below 17mm thick.

If you need a device at home for your kids to start their school with, you can consider the budget friendly Acer Chromebook Spin 314. It is not just budget friendly though, it is also made partly with sustainable materials. It features an OceanGlass touchpad, a sort of glass surface type of material that is made up of recycled plastic you pick up from the ocean.

It features Intel’s latest generation processors. That also means that it is still powerful enough to work with when your kids need it most. The 14-inch Full HD IPS display allows your kids to have enough screen real estate to work with when it comes to their schoolwork, and even video conferencing. With 10-hours in battery life, your kids would not have any excuse for missing class too.

[next@acer] The Acer ConceptD 7 now Comes with SpatialLabs for the 3D creators

Earlier this year, Acer brought the SpatialLabs concept into their ConceptD notebooks. They specifically brought the technology first in the form of the latest Acer ConceptD 5 Pro that was released earlier this in early June 2021. While in execution the technology may not be overly impressive, the technology itself is still interesting.

Let us attempt to explain to you what SpatialLabs is though. SpatialLabs is a 3D viewing technology. While most 3D implementation requires you to have special eye gear to view, SpatialLabs boasts a 3D technology without requiring an additional viewing gear. In concept, it sounds amazing, in practice, you are not going to see much unless you are the user.

On the ConceptD 5 Pro, SpatialLabs could be used by the users to visualise 3D characters, realise 3D models, all without using a 3D glasses, or 3D printing the items or their projects. You just need to sit in front of the PC, and you are good to go. Imagine the possibilities of this technology for designers, engineers, and even 3D artists. Imagine SpatialLabs in a larger, more powerful scale. That is the ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition.

To start with, the Acer ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition is a powerhouse. You get Intel’s 11th Generation Core i7 processor (up to) that is also paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU (up to). You get to spec it up to 64GB as well as a 2TB SSD storage to boot. The display is a looker as well with up to 4K UHD in resolution from a 15.6-inch IPS panel. The display even boasts up to 100% in Adobe RGB colour gamut coverage and hit up to Delta E<2 for the best colour accuracy your money can buy.

Of course, there is a webcam on the laptop. It is not just a plain webcam set up though. It is also an eye-tracker sensor that helps the SpatialLabs technology create shapes and objects based on where your eyes are.

The Acer ConceptD SpacialLabs Edition will be available in the EMEA region December 2021 onward. It will reach the North American market in 2022 only though. The ConceptD 7 with SpatialLabs technology will be sold from EU€ 3,599 (MYR 17,339*) onward. No specific news yet on when the device will hit Malaysian shores. More information on the acer SpatialLabs technology can be found on their website.

[next@acer] Acer’s Vero Line-Up – Made for Humanity, Made for Sustainability

Sustainable is a bigger thing today than ever before. The drive to consciously limit your carbon footprint. It is more than just about reducing your own carbon footprint though. It is also about making decisions to use products and from brands that are limiting their carbon footprint. In the world of electronics though, waste is almost inevitable.

But living sustainably and responsibly goes further than just buying products that creates a smaller carbon footprint also. It is about understanding a cycle. It is about understanding that each item you use will produce waste. It is about understanding where these waste items go to or reusing the waste in a different form. In the case of the Acer Vero line-up, it is about using one of the largest and most damaging waste items since the World War II era and repurposing the materials in new products that looks like no other.

The Aspire line-up is Acer’s staple notebook line-up that is created for casual users. It is especially popular with students and the budget conscious buyers. At the same time, it is one of the more feature packed laptops in the market. Now, it is also sustainable with chassis made from recycled plastics (30% recycled plastics on chassis, 50% recycled plastics on keycaps).

The Aspire Vero packs a lot of power still with up to an 11th generation Intel Core i7-1195G7 processor. You get to spec it up with up to 16GB of RAM too for good measure. For maximum flexibility, you get 1TB (up to) of SSD storage too.

For all kinds of graphical needs on Windows 11, the Aspire Vero has Intel’s Xe Graphics (up to). The integrated GPU powers a 15.6-inch IPS display. The substantial display size allows the laptop to fit a large battery that can last up to 9.5 hours of typical use.

The benefit of using mostly plastics for its construction is weight, or rather, the lack of it. The Aspire Vero weighs only 1.8kg. Its included packaging can also be repurposed as a laptop stand. At the same time, the lightweight high-quality recycled plastic body is designed to be easily removed for future serviceability and repair.

One of the most popular business laptops out there has been Acer’s TravelMate series. Because reliability is important in the business world, the TravelMate is made to be as reliable as possible. Of course, It has to be secure as well, since some of the most sensitive documents from your company might be housed in the PC. Again, the Vero variant will come with just more than just security and reliability. It comes with sustainability.

Like the Aspire Vero, 30% of the TraveMate Vero’s chassis is made of recycled plastics. 50% of its keycaps are also made of the same material. It also features a reusable packaging. You can turn the packaging into a laptop stand for example.

It comes with Intel’s 11th Generation Core i7-1195G7 processor paired with an Intel Iris Xe Graphics for power. The Windows 11 device packs up to 1TB in SSD storage and also up to 16GB in RAM to handle all sorts of multitasking and storage needs. It also boasts a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display with Acer’s ComfyView to ensure that your eyes are well protected in extended working conditions.

The 1.8kg package also comes with up 9.5 hours in battery life. Of course, it comes with an enterprise level TPM for security while working on-the-go. At the same time, for the most flexible centralised enterprise system set-up, the Acer TravelMate Vero also comes with their Commercial type BIOS. The enterprise level BIOS can also be locked and reversed should there be a security breach or any concerns of a cyberattack on the TravelMate Vero.

Who said your desktop PC tower has to be a 100% metal chassis? Acer does not think so with the new Veriton Vero Mini. The Veriton series are made to be industrial machines to be placed less than ideal situations while remaining as reliable as possible.

The Veriton Vero Mini is designed to be placed in environments where space is an absolute premium as well. At the same time, it is designed to blend with any environment it is put into and still remain functional at the same time.

For that, the Windows 11 mini PC comes with Intel’s latest Core vPro processors to ensure that the Veriton Vero Mini is capable of handling all sorts of workloads you might require of it. You can spec it with up to 64GB in RAM too to ensure that your multitask workflow remains smooth and reliable. It is not meant to handle 3D workloads though, since it is only relying on Intel’s integrated graphics platform. You can opt for up to 2TB in HDD storage, or up to 1TB in SSD space, or both. At the same time, you get Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity with the Veriton Vero Mini for maximum flexibility in its placement.

The Veriton Vero Mini’s chassis is made of 25% recycled plastics too, which explains its unique design. Because of the plastic construction also, it only weighs 1.3 kg, which would mean that you can mount it almost anywhere without a fuss.

Acer Vero BR277

Of course, any work environment with the Acer Veriton Vero Mini is not complete without a monitor to match. The display must be on theme as well with the Veriton Vero. It must be made of the same materials to match the unique look that only the Vero series can offer. That is the Acer Vero BR277.

The Acer Vero BR277 is Acer’s first sustainable market monitor. It is also probably most sustainable product from Acer. Half its chassis is made of recycled plastics. That is pretty amazing considering that the Full HD monitor can offer the same motions as the regular monitors. You can tilt it, swivel it, adjust its heights to a comfortable level, and pivot it to your heart’s content, or rather your preferred use case. All that while remaining mostly plastic.

27-inch IPS panel boasts 4ms in response time and 75Hz in refresh rate. It clearly is not a gaming monitor for the power users. It does offer 72% NTSC colour gamut though, which is accurate enough in most use cases. While it does not offer more than 6-bit (16.7 million colours), it will still be a good enough monitor in most industrial use cases too.

Macaron Vero Mouse

Source: Acer

It is not Acer’s special dessert. The Macaron Vero Mouse is an actual electronic mouse that is meant to be used with your PC products. Of course, because it is a Vero product, it is made of sustainable materials. It is mostly made of recycled plastic that also contributes to its unique look.

The Vero mouse is also made to complete the look and feel of the Vero series. It is made to match the Vero laptops and even the Veriton Vero Mini if you want it to. It is just a regular wireless mouse that is made to complete the whole Vero look though.

Acer’s Swift X is an AMD Powered Content Creator Thin and Light Powerhouse for MYR 4,299 Onward

There is a general problem when you get a thin-and-light PC. There are plenty of compromises with a lot of them. They are also generally expensive.

One of the compromises you must live with when you opt for a thin-and-light notebook PC is the lack of power. You usually can opt for a powerful enough processor that is clocked to reduce its power consumption. You do not get a dedicated GPU with the thin-and-light though.

You also do not get a lot of ports to come with the laptop. Just to keep the device thin, they must sacrifice on the practicality of full-sized I/O ports. The result is an ultra-thin laptop that you can carry around without breaking your back, but for it to be practical, you need to carry a separate dongle.

That is not the case with Acer’s brand-new Swift X though. It is powerful. It is also very practical. At the same time, Acer’s new notebook PC offers the experience of owning a larger formed thin-and-light.

Swift X SFX14 41G FpBl1 Sb 01b
Source: Acer

The Acer Swift X is powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 5800U (up to) processor. While it is not an H-series processor, the Ryzen 7 5800U is still plenty powerful while remaining energy efficient for long lasting battery life. Alongside the powerful CPU is not a mere Vega integrated GPU though. It is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti (up to) dedicated discrete GPU.

With up to 16GB of RAM, the Swift X is really a thin-and-light PC made for content creators. But power is just half the story. The Swift X must output some impressive colours too for content creators. Getting the job done is a 14-inch Full HD IPS panel that covers nearly 86% of the Swift X’s body. It boasts 300nits in brightness, which should be bright enough in most situations. The panel also covers 100% of the sRGB colour gamut. At the same time, Acer includes its BlueLightShield technology to protect your eyes in extended usage. There is even a fingerprint sensor for better security when you leave your laptop unattended with Windows Hello.

All of these does not come with too much weight penalty too. It is still a light notebook at 1.39kg. It is still thin too at 1.79cm. While it is not as thin as the regular ultrabooks you find in the market today, the Swift X does have full-sized I/O ports like an HDMI out port and two USB Type-A ports. All of that while keeping a 59W battery that offers up to 17-hours of continuous use time.
