Intel Unveils Thunderbolt 5: Higher Speed, Faster Charging & Next Generation Standards

With content creators, gamers, and professionals demanding ever-increasing bandwidth, Thunderbolt 5 is ready to meet these high demands. Whether it’s high-resolution displays, low-latency visuals, or handling larger video and data files, Thunderbolt 5 is engineered to provide the performance and bandwidth needed for these modern computing needs.

The new standard is poised to deliver an impressive 80 gigabits per second (Gbps) of bi-directional bandwidth, and with its Bandwidth Boost feature, it can provide a whopping 120 Gbps, offering an unparalleled display and data experience. This substantial leap provides up to three times more bandwidth than existing connectivity solutions, ensuring that users enjoy superior display quality and lightning-fast data connections.

Thunderbolt 5 builds upon Thunderbolt 4 and is designed to be fully compatible with previous Thunderbolt versions and USB4 V2 standards. This ensures users can seamlessly integrate Thunderbolt 5 into their existing setups without compatibility concerns.

Intel isn’t the only one behind Thunderbolt 5. Industry leaders like Microsoft and Apple are also collaborators in developing this new technology. This also means that it’s compatible with Windows-based systems as well as Macs. Both Windows and Mac users can also benefit from the lightning-fast speeds and connectivity Thunderbolt 5 offers.

Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 controllers, codenamed Barlow Ridge, are expected to power computers and accessories starting in 2024. However, Thunderbolt 4 will continue to serve users who don’t require the extreme bandwidth that 5 delivers.

Stay tuned for the arrival of Thunderbolt 5 in 2024, and get ready to experience a new era of lightning-fast, high-bandwidth connectivity.

Acer’s Swift Edge 16 Launches in Malaysia at MYR 3,999 Onward

When someone tells us that they need a laptop that can do everything, we tend to recommend the modern-day gaming laptop. There is a good reason for that. Modern gaming laptops are not the most budget-friendly laptops to get when all you want to do is browse the web or entertain yourself with YouTube, Netflix, or even Amazon Prime Videos. But they are very good at doing everything beyond that too. You can easily play games casually with gaming laptops, they are powerful enough to quickly edit videos when you want to, and they are even perfect for running multiple screens at the same time so that your TV can easily become a multimedia hub for your home.

That does not mean that any other laptops are pretty much useless. Thin-and-light laptops have come a long way. More precisely, processor technology has advanced to a point where even a thin-and-light laptop can easily drive multiple screens and make rather good multimedia hubs on their own anyway. They are even powerful enough to become remote workstations for light video workflow even if you need them to be.

Take the new Acer Swift Edge 16 for example. It is powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 7735U (up to) CPU. That CPU also includes an AMD Radeon 680M graphics baked into the CPU itself making the Swift Edge 16 an entry-level gaming machine more capable than most thin-and-light laptops in the market. Pair those with an impressive 16-inch OLED 120Hz display with 0.2 ms response time comes with more pixels than most entry-level gaming monitors, you have a winner of a package in the Swift Edge 16.

The point of the new Acer Swift Edge 16 though is not its gaming prowess. It can be a casual entry-level gaming machine when the mood takes you, but it is more its productivity capabilities that might really help. Since it is a powerful enough machine with up to 16GB of on-board LPDDR5 RAM, working with editing suites like Adobe Photoshop or even Illustrator is a breeze. With the high-resolution WQUXGA OLED 120Hz display with up to 400 nits of brightness as well, your images can be edited in rather accurate, vivid colours and with maximum details. The DCI-P3 100% colour gamut supported display with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification should also allow you to enjoy pretty much all sorts of contents from Netflix and YouTube in 4K resolution. Even if you are one of those that prefers to download movies and contents rather than streaming them, you will appreciate the 1TB (up to) SSD storage as well.

The 4K display is not just good for entertainment though. The expansive 16-inch display allows you to work with multiple documents without having to squint at every word. The Full HD webcam that supports up to 60fps in video capture and Temporal Noise reduction mic should also deliver a video calling experience like no other. You also get to enjoy all of these for up to 9 hours on a single charge, more than a full workdays’ worth of battery life. When you are on your desk with multiple monitors, you can either connect your Swift Edge 16 to the display via the regular HDMI 2.1 port or via USB Type-C port.

The best part about all of these is that the thin-and-light laptop only weighs 1.17kg and is just below 13mm thin. Thanks to the advanced TwinAir colling technology exclusively developed by Acer, the thin-and-light laptop should keep up with its thermal demands despite the powerful CPU. It looks unique and elegant too in its Flax White guise.

Price and Availability

The Acer Swift Edge 16 is now available from Acer’s authorized retails and concept stores across the nation in Flax White. It will set you back MYR 3,999 onward. In conjunction with Acer Day 2023, the first 30 buyers of the Acer Swift Edge 16 before the 30th of September 2023 will be entitled to gifts worth up to MYR 948 which includes a Porsche Design wireless mouse, an Austin backpack, and Touch n’ Go eWallet credit. Customers also stand a chance to win the Acer Day Monthly giveaways with a prize pool of MYR 100,000. You can head over to their redemption site to participate. How To Balance Business Innovation and Operational Excellence

This article is contributed by Varinderjit Singh, General Manager, Lenovo Malaysia

IT decision-makers have officially earned their seats at the table — nearly three-quarters of CIOs say their roles have been elevated by the visibility they received during the pandemic. [1] Now they have to figure out what to serve first.

Picture1
The Lenovo ThinkPad® X1 Nano Gen 3 is powered by 13th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-1340P processor takes multitasking—and manageability—to the next level and is built for what IT needs and users want.

Digital strategy and transformation took the lead last year for 67% of CIOs, but the number fell to 60% in 2022 as IT decision-makers focused on the fundamentals of optimizing and managing technology.1 Priority whiplash has left more than 76% of CIOs struggling to balance two critical goals: business innovation and operational excellence.1

With the right technology partner, IT decision-makers don’t have to choose. Smarter digital workplace solutions raise the bar on productivity, business agility, and infrastructure integrity, freeing them to focus on strategic organizational change. In fact, that’s how they would prefer to spend their time — 83% of IT decision-makers are actively seeking digital transformation opportunities that will help their companies contribute good to the world.[2]

What should you look for in a technology partner?

An end-to-end solution provider will have your back, optimizing operations in three essential ways.

01. Productivity and collaboration

Exceptional technology is the baseline for productivity and collaboration, supporting hybrid workplaces, connecting employees, and securing data and devices from anywhere. When it works, technology enables peak performance and improves user experience. On average, three-quarters of employees credit their business technology with making them feel more productive and empowered.2 And 60% of IT decision-makers see their employee experience (EX) scores rise by focusing on improving users’ experience with technology.[3]

When technology doesn’t work, IT decision-makers put innovation on the back burner while they scramble to field help desk requests, respond to security emergencies, push out patches, and source new products to meet evolving business needs.

Look for technology that is optimized to work together, promises exceptional reliability, and leverages the most current innovations for data and employee security.

Lenovo delivers a portfolio of premium solutions — hardware, software, services, and accessories — ranging from PCs and smartphones to smart collaboration to augmented and virtual reality technology (AR/VR). Plus, remote management and automation technology innovations can cut time spent on manual processes by as much as 50%.[4] Hardware- and software-based security and manageability tools elevate productivity on modern devices like the ThinkPad® X1 Carbon Gen 11, powered by 13th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-1335U processor, built for what IT needs and users want.4

Picture2

About half of CIOs right now are spending significant time on operational IT improvements, and 26% are busy reacting to IT crises.1

What would you be doing if your technology could manage and secure itself?

02. Agility and optimization

Business transformation often depends on the ability to scale, requiring immediate access to mission-critical technology. Quick access to technology has proven elusive for some organizations, which results in IT teams spending significant time managing older equipment.

That’s an easy ask if they’re partnered with a technology provider that offers as-a-service solutions. With Lenovo TruScale, devices, infrastructure, services, and support can all be scaled easily to meet evolving business needs. Everything from the pocket to the cloud is available on demand, from a single point of contact, in a cost-efficient OpEx model. End-of-life recycling is also an important part of the package — streamlining the process for IT decision-makers, eliminating security risks associated with asset disposal, and helping to meet organizational sustainability goals.

When it comes to freeing up time for innovation, few decisions are as impactful as choosing an as-a-service partner. When everything from infrastructure to end-user devices is optimized, updated, and ready to be deployed anywhere in the world, operational excellence takes care of itself.

03. Intelligent infrastructure

Businesses need an infrastructure that delivers faster time to insights, improved application performance, enhanced security, and better manageability.

Cloud computing is an important part of the equation. As of 2022, 60% of corporate data worldwide is now stored in the cloud,[5] and that makes achieving operational excellence significantly easier.

Within just a few months after migrating to the cloud, 80% of businesses report operational improvement[6] thanks to the continuity, resilience, and efficiencies achieved with hybrid cloud computing.

The Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors in Lenovo’s ThinkAgile appliances optimize workloads and improve efficiency, providing significant improvement in data processing capacity. Along with flexible cloud storage, IT decision-makers also have access to remote management services and support analytics through one customer portal. With increased visibility across the entire fleet and the capability to manage technology remotely, they can significantly reduce organization-crushing downtime — and make time for transformation.

Smarter IT decision-makers don’t go it alone. 92% of CIOs believe technology vendors play a valuable role in their company’s overall success.[7]
