HiFi, Clips & Better Podcast Discovery Coming to Spotify

Spotify took center stage at their StreamOn event and, Boy!… did they have a lot to announce.

The streaming service is gaining even more momentum internationally with a rollout to an additional 80 countries. This comes on the tail of their recent launch in South Korea. The countries joining the Spotify fold include a large number of those in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America including countries such as Bangladesh, Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mongolia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka; reaching over a billion potential users. With the new additions, Spotify is now available in over 170 countries putting it on par with competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Premium.

Spotify HiFi: CD Quality, Lossless Streaming

In addition to this, Spotify also announced “Spotify HiFi”. The new HiFi offering brings CD quality, lossless audio to the music streaming platform. This will make Spotify more appealing to the audiophiles out there as they will be able to get better, more detailed sound via the app. The new service ups the bit rate available on Spotify from the current 320kbps to about 1,400kbps. This means that the more nuanced attributes of songs are able to better come through when streamed. The company did trial the service in the U.S. back in 2017 for a USD$7.50 (MYR30.32) premium on top of its subscription. However, aside from noting that the new Spotify HiFi will be coming to select markets, they have not revealed much.

Artist-Audience Interaction with Spotify Clips

If HiFi streaming wasn’t enough, Spotify also officially announced its Clips feature. The new feature functions in a similar fashion to Instagram Stories or Snaps on Snapchat. They allow artists to interact directly with their audience on Spotify by sharing clips akin to their social media. If this sounds familiar, it’s cause the company was testing the feature out over the past Christmas holidays in the U.S. However, with this announcement, the feature will see a more widespread release. Clips will appear on playlists to allow users to get a glimpse into personal moments from the artists.

Podcasts: Better Discovery, New Experiences

Spotify didn’t leave any stone unturned during its StreamOn event. The app has become one of the largest Podcast distribution platforms since it introduced the feature. Keeping that in mind, the company is looking at making Podcast discoverability easier for creators. In a nutshell, the company is looking to serve podcast episodes to listeners based on their preferences. It will also employ A.I. and machine learning to help users search for podcasts better.

In addition, the company is also working on creating new experiences when it comes to podcasts. Spotify is working with WordPress to create podcasts from written content. Creators will also be able to engage with audiences more directly with interactive Q&As, polls, and even video. The company is also making its Ad Studio available for podcast creators to help monetize their podcasts better.

Netflix Take Content Discovery On-The-Go with “Downloads for You”

Being on-the-go with spotty internet can be a very irritating predicament; even more so when you’re trying to play catch up with your new binge-worthy show. Three years ago, Netflix addressed that with Smart Downloads which automatically downloaded the next episode of your show. This allowed you to seamlessly enjoy your show without any interruptions.

This year, they’re taking it one step further with Downloads For You. The new feature automatically downloads shows or movies that Netflix thinks you’d like. Rest assured, you won’t be dealing with terabytes of data being downloaded into your device – unless that’s what you want. Users will be able to control how much space the new feature takes up.

Managing the feature is as easy as going to the downloads tab and toggling the Downloads For You option. After which users will be able to select how much data the feature should take up – 1GB, 3GB, or 5GB. Of course, the more data you allow it to take up, the more content you get.

The feature is now available to Netflix users with an Android device. Netflix is working to get the feature on their iOS app soon.

Is Fitbit Working on a New Premium Plan?

Fitbit’s health-centric devices have been some of the best fitness devices on the market to date. The company has successfully developed sensors and an intuitive interface that allows users to not only collect data but view them in a way that is easy to understand. However, in 2019, Fitbit saw the opportunity to bring even more insights to their users at a premium.

Fitbit Premium has been up and running since late 2019. It provides deeper insights into the data that is already collected by your Fitbit device – some of which could even be used to detect COVID-19 without the PCR test. Just recently, the company extended the availability of a limited version of Fitbit Premium available to users of the Versa 3 and Inspire 2. Now, it seems like that may be more behind that.

Source: Fitbit

Fitbit has recently sent out a customer survey which asks users to consider an cheaper tier of their Fitbit Premium service. According to Android Central, the theoretical new tier would be priced at USD$2.99 (MYR12.09); less than half the price of the current plan at USD$9.99 (MYR40.38). However, it seems like the offerings would be significantly less than the current Premium plan which offers not only user data but also guided workouts and more. The new plan would allow users to “see your activity, sleep, stress, and health metrics for the last month, year, forever with unlimited historical data.”

It seems like this may be Google gauging users’ valuation of the data and insights they get from Fitbit devices. This comes as no surprise as the sale of Fitbit to Google essentially limited what Google could do with the data collected from Fitbit devices. Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, mentions the issue of data privacy and Google’s acquisition of Fitbit stating that the acquisition was about hardware and never the data.

PR asset of Fitbit Premium on Android, showing Today screen with insights. For placement into renders or lifestyle imagery only.

This deal has always been about devices, not data, and we’ve been clear since the beginning that we will protect Fitbit users’ privacy. We worked with global regulators on an approach which safeguards consumers’ privacy expectations, including a series of binding commitments that confirm Fitbit users’ health and wellness data won’t be used for Google ads and this data will be separated from other Google ads data.

Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President, Devices & Services at Google

However, Google being a data company understands that there is an inherent value to all the data being collected. Hence, this straw poll to see if users are willing to spend to get access to their data and insights is just an exercise of how much value users place in the data collected by their Fitbits.

That said, we have always been in the camp where users should be given access to their data regardless of a “Premium” fee – the other goodies in the premium subscription are definitely worth the investment, if you see the need or want to make better sense of the data that’s being collected.

DOTA 2 Comes to the Silver Screen in New Netflix Anime

Valve’s popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, DOTA 2, is making its way to a silver screen near you. The popular game will be making its silver screen debut on Netflix in a new anime series called DOTA: Dragon’s Blood. It will be making it debut on March 25, 2021.

DOTA: Dragon's Blood | Date Announcement | Netflix

The 8-episode anime series will be following the story of Davion, one of the characters from the MOBA. In the anime, Davion is a devoted Dragon Knight. He fights to rid the world of the scourge. During his journeys, he encounters a powerful, ancient eldwurm and Princess Mirana. Unbeknownst to Davion, the princess is on a mission of her own. Slowly, but surely, Davion is pulled into events that prove to be larger than he could ever imagine.

The series is produced in partnership with Valve. Showrunner, Ashley Edward Miller, is confident that the show will be received well by fans. Miller previously worked on shows such as X-Men: First Class, Thor and Black Sails and will be also acting as the executive producer for DOTA: Dragon’s Blood. Miller is joined by Ru Ki Hyun as the co-executive producer. The series is animated by Studio MIR, the studio behind The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender and the recently announced The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

“Fans will love how we’ve imagined the DOTA 2 universe and woven together an epic, emotional, and adult-oriented story about some of their favourite characters. The cinematic animation, acting and music are simply next level and I’m grateful to Valve for supporting our creative ambitions.”

Ashley Edward Miller, Showrunner & Executive Producer

While this is big news for the IP (Intellectual Property), Davion is widely considered one of the less interesting characters in the MOBA. It will be exciting to see what team behind the anime have in mind for the character and whether they will stick to the established lore of DOTA.

Philips S1301 Shaver Review – A Close Shave

When it comes to personal hygiene, facial hair – or the lack thereof, can play a huge role in how you feel about yourself. That’s why we were pretty excited when we got ahold of the Philips S1301 Shaver for review. Philips has been one of the biggest names when it comes to personal health and hygiene and getting up close and personal with one of their offerings proved to be an interesting experience.

Shaving is a very personal thing for men, especially when it comes to how close it is or even how the final look ends up. Most men are either going for a more manly, rugged look nowadays which usually translates to having a semblance of a stubble. That said, a good percentage of us still default to being clean-shaven. That’s where a shaver – electric or otherwise comes into play.

Packed with Technology

The Philips S1301 shaver is definitely a candidate for a good shaver. It ticks most of the boxes that we would personally look at when it comes to an electric shaver. The first is, like most other electronics – the design. The Philip S1301 shaver is definitely designed well. It feels natural in the hand. It’s ergonomic as well; you won’t be straining your wrist while using it.

It’s also compact, allowing you to simply pack it along with your other toiletries in your bag. However, the one thing that threw us off with the design is the exposed charging port at the bottom. This charging port is also not a standard USB port, instead it’s a proprietary port that requires its own charger – so you’ll need to remember to pack it as well. Speaking of charging, the battery level is indicated by the power button albeit a little counterintuitively. Aside from that, the shaver is sleek and pretty much ticks all the boxes in terms of design.

That said, the true worth of a shaver lies in how well it carries out its function. When it comes to technology, the Philips Series 1000 isn’t lacking much. It’s packed with 27 self-sharpening, mini-blades which Philips guarantees won’t dull for up to 2 years. It has IPX7 certification for use in both wet and dry conditions. This also means that you’ll be able to clean it quickly by simply running water over it.

A Close, Irritating Shave

So the big question is – how does this technology translate when it comes to performance? The gist of it? Not too bad. The small blades are housed within floating heads. These floating heads allow the blades to conform to the contours of your face for a closer shave.

However, when it came to the shaving process, the Series 1000 ended up causing quite a bit of irritation when I used it. It was later pointed out that to get the best experience from the shaver, you needed to use a circular motion. This helped a little bit when it came to irritation. Nonetheless, if your facial hair is on the longer side of things, you may want to avoid doing a dry shave. In my experience using it, it felt as if my facial hair was being plucked more than cut.

Using the Philips S1301 for a wet shave minimised a lot of the irritation I experienced with the dry shave. It seems like the foam provided some much needed lubrication and protection to my skin. That said, the Series 1000 does provide a pretty close shave – something I really appreciated.

A Good Shaver – But We Expected More

With all that in mind, it makes you consider the overall package. The Philips Series 1000 is definitely one of the better, more affordable shavers in the market right now. However, to be very honest, being Philips product, I had higher expectations for the price. This is exacerbated by the options from other brands that come with the same features at a much lower price point.

That said, the Philips Series 1000 shaver is not a bad buy. It’s a shaver which you can travel with and it does what it’s meant to well. You may need to take some extra steps to prevent skin irritation, particularly if you have sensitive skin. However, the Philips S1301 gives you one of the closest shaves that you can get from a shaver in its category. It’s also easy to use out of the box and you can get enough battery life for a shave with just 5 minutes of charging.

All in all, I’d say if you were looking for an affordable shaver with a recognised brand name – you pretty much have it lock, stock and barrel with the Philips Series 1000.

Acer Malaysia Brings Fresh Air with acerpure Cool in Malaysia

Announced late last year, the acerpure line up is bringing Acer into a new segment all together. The new line up comes at an opportune time as Malaysia has just extended its second MCO (Movement Control Order) for a further 2-weeks ending on 14th February. With the pandemic occurring the world over and Malaysians being mandated to spend more time at home, the issue of indoor air quality is becoming an increasing concern.

Acer’s acerpure Cool is looking to address that issue with cutting edge technologies that help purify and circulate indoor air more readily. The acerpure cool comes with a 3-in-1 HEPA filter which includes a pre-filter, activated carbon filter and a HEPA 13 main filter. This helps trap, eliminate and filter impurities in the air. The HEPA filter also traps up to 99.7% of particles as small as 0.3μm. In addition, the acerpure cool filters are silver ion (Ag+) coated filters which have been verified by third party labs to eliminate bacteria and mitigate H1N1 activity.

The air purifier has a simple, modern design which comes with an LED touch panel complete with child safety locks. It is able to give real time readings of indoor air quality with the built-in PM1.0 air quality sensor. Readings are indicated with a green, yellow and red LED indicator light corresponding to the density of particulate matter in the air. The acerpure cool will intelligently adjust its settings as the air quality changes to ensure that the overall room air quality remains intact. It is able to cool a 27m2 room in three minutes and functions silently (as low as 26dB).

Pricing & Availability

The acerpure cool is available starting on 5 February 2021 for MYR1,299 (USD$320.07) in dark grey and moon white.

Acer will be having a special introductory offer where the acerpure cool will be retailing MYR899 (USD$221.51) with an additional HEPA filter worth MYR199 (USD$49.03). The offer will be happening on LAZADA on 5 February 2021. After the one day promotion, the air purifier will be retailing at MYR999 (USD$246.22) with a free HEPA filter replacement worth MYR199 (USD$49.03) from February 6 to February 9 2021.

Dealing with the Digital Realities of the New Normal

As we begin the new year and look back on 2020, it is undeniable that technology has played a crucial role in helping everyone, young or old, to stay connected with our loved ones as we experienced variations of lockdowns in the past year. However, are you aware that there are stark differences in people’s usage behaviours on social platforms, even between those who were born just a few years apart, such as millennials (currently aged 25 to 40 years old) and Gen Z (currently aged 24 or younger)?

Most millenials are digital immigrants, meaning we remember a time before mass technological adoption. This is different from Gen Zs, who are the first generation to be considered true digital natives. They were born into a world of vast technological advances, with the internet as an integral part of their day to day. They don’t know a world without smartphones and broadband internet. Hence, how they think, communicate, use and don’t use the internet is different from the generations before them.

Additionally, as people observe stay at home orders during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they are increasingly turning to indoor activities enabled by the internet; communication, commerce, entertainment, fitness, and learning now take place virtually. This will undoubtedly accelerate digital transformation across many businesses, which will in turn sustain the digital economy.

Gen Z is uniquely well-positioned to continue driving this transformation as they are digital natives familiar and comfortable with new technologies quickly. Digital technology has shaped them, and we should take a page out of the Gen Z book when it comes to some habits and practices.

Value the importance of authenticity

According to Snap Inc. and JWT Intelligence’s “Into Z Future” study, when asked to develop a slogan for their own generation, Gen Z respondents overwhelmingly suggest some variation of “be yourself” – such as “just be you”, “just be yourself”, and “do what makes you happy.” This is a positive mentality to have.

It is important that we value authenticity over ‘perfection,’ which takes courage and confidence. We should not fear judgement or being perceived negatively for being who we are, especially when we are among friends. Honesty is a value that the majority of Malaysians, regardless of their age group, want between themselves and their best friend. The 2019 Friendship Report found that Malaysians want their best friends to be more honest and open about their feelings.

Before we can demand honesty from our friends, we need to first be our true, honest, and authentic self! After all, friendship is a two-way street – Gen Zs seem to have figured that part out.

Not everything is meant to be shared

According to Snap Inc.’s 2019 Friendship Report, millennials come out on top as the most “share happy” of the generations. Millennials are the least likely to say “I wouldn’t share that” across most categories surveyed including their love life, mental health issues, and money concerns. However, oversharing can have negative consequences, such as safety issues, loss of jobs, or risking personal reputation.

Photo by Prateek Katyal from Pexels

As digital natives, Gen Zs are likely to be more private, having learned from the mistakes made by the older generations. Gen Zs’ familiarity with these platforms means that they carefully choose how and where they share. They prefer ephemeral content that disappears, on social messaging platforms such as Snapchat. For example, they prefer to share details about their love life with their best friends over private messages as compared to millennials who would share about it on social media.

Gen Zs understand implicitly that just because we can share something with the world, it doesn’t mean that we should. This is a mindset that we should all adopt.

Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to friendship circle

Gen Zs are adjusting their approach to friendship, which differs from millennials’ desire for a wide network. The former is looking for more closeness and intimacy with a smaller social circle, where they can be their unfiltered, authentic selves. In contrast, millennials are the most likely of any generation to want “as many friends as possible.”

content diverse friends stacking hands on bench in park
Photo by Gabby K on Pexels.com

This is the same in Malaysia, where older generations gravitate towards forming friendships with as many people as possible, while Gen Zs (37%) are selective over the people they let into their close circle of friends.

While we all know the positive benefits of having close friends in our lives, a larger pool is not always better. According to friendship experts, a larger group of friends can take a toll on a person because there is greater pressure to open up to many different people and invest in those relationships. It seems that this is a life lesson that Gen Zs have already learned. Based on the above, we can see that there are a lot to be learned from different mindsets, and generation gaps do not just have to be a woeful reminder of “the good old days.”  Look at things in a new light and shed your preconceived notions
