Google Glass Bites the Dust – Support Officially Ending in September 2023, Sales Has Ceased

Google Glass made its debut in 2013. Back then, Google Glass made headlines everywhere and the idea that everyone in the world will eventually own one or some type of augmented reality (A.R.) headgear was not in any way ridiculous. That conversation died soon after though. The reality (no pun intended) was that an A.R. glasses from Google at the time will set you back US$ 1,500, or if you convert that to local currency at the time, about MYR 5,000 there or thereabouts. That kind of money for a pair of clunky glasses you need to keep charging every few hours is the kind of luxury most in the world cannot afford or does not need. Added to the fact that Google Assistant and A.R. functionalities at the time was in its infancy, crude at best; why would you pay that much money for  a pair of glasses?

The original Google Glass stayed on sale for about two years though, until 2015. No sales numbers were quoted within that time frame. In that time, Google also produced a new type of Google Glass. This time, they realized that the A.R. smart glasses market was not something they wanted to sell to end-users. Instead, they saw more potential use cases in the enterprise market. Hence, Google developed, supported, and sold Google Glass Enterprise edition from 2015 onward. Then in 2023, well today, they stopped selling the kit entirely and announce that they will stop supporting them in September 2023.

Through its life, the A.R. project by Google was adopted mostly in the construction and medical field. They updated the Google Glass Enterprise Edition once in 2019. From then on, Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 replaced the first iteration.

Google has not announced any replacement for Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2. It does not look like Google will be announcing any replacement for the A.R. goggles anytime soon though. That does not mean that Google has given up on the idea of A.R. completely.

In 2020 Google made an acquisition that still confirms Google’s commitment to their A.R. project. They acquired North, a smart glasses maker. Since then the Mountain View giant has been reported to be working on some kind of smart A.R. wearable that resembles ski goggles. The project was code named Project Iris. There has been little update on the project’s progress since then though.

It is also unlikely for Google to scrap the project since their competitors are also working on the same thing. Apple and Meta (formerly known as Facebook) have been working on their own versions of A.R. and Virtual Reality (V.R.) headsets for some time now. Reportedly, they are looking to bring their own versions of the headsets some time in the future. Microsoft is also known to have a mixed reality department of their own and has produced working prototypes for mixed reality, but those hardware has not been sold to end-consumers for good reason.

A.R. is still pretty much something you can look forward to as a normal in the future. For now though, with Google shelving their most promising mixed reality project temporarily, that future looks a little further than we might like to think. You can find out more about Google’s Glass project from their website.

IKEA Announces VINDSTYRKA a Smart Air Quality Monitor That Plays Nice with Matter

Your surrounding air quality is more important than you think. While some might take it for granted, it is one of the things that greatly affects your health and wellbeing. It is also something you can hardly control when you are out and about. At home though, you have a lot more control over your environment. There is still a problem; how do you know if you are breathing clean, pollutant free air at home? You need an air quality sensor for that.

Where do you get one? Why not from your favourite Swede furniture store, IKEA? They have just announced the VINDSTYRKA air quality sensor that features a large display to tell you if your air at home is of poor quality.

Like any IKEA product, it is built to be a real plug-and-play solution for any homes. Its simplistic design is also made to ensure that it looks at home in any environment, no matter where you place it in your home. Their marketing image shows it sitting in what looks like an island kitchen counter, and even that looks great and natural.

IKEA VINDSTYRKA PE880019 eb33d713
Source: IKEA

It measures particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) particles in the air within its environment. It also takes humidity, temperature and TVOC levels. The measurements taken by the air quality sensor are general readings you can find on most higher-end air purifiers you can buy in the market today. IKEA is not about producing ultra-premium products at unreachable prices though. They are about modularity and accessible home improvement products. This VINDSTYRKA is exactly made with that in mind.

The IKEA VINDSTYRKA can be connected to DIRIGERA, IKEA’s hub for all things smart home. That way, it sends all the information collected on the sensor to the IKEA Home smartphone app. The readings can be used by the app to trigger other smart home products that is compatible with DIRIGERA. You can pair it with IKEA’s own STARKVIND air purifiers, for example, and trigger them when your air quality drops to a certain level.

It is not just IKEA’s smart home products that the IKEA VINDSTYRKA works with though. DIRIGERA hub is also Matter-enabled. That means that you can get the air quality sensor to work with any other smart home tools or appliances that works with Matter. You might have a separate smart air purifier that is controlled by a different smart home app. As long as it works with Matter, your air quality sensor still can trigger the air purifier. You can also check your air quality readings on non-Android devices in this case.

  • IKEA VINDSTYRKA PE880019 eb33d713
  • IKEA VINDSTYRKA PE882695 7e606f5f

The IKEA VINDSTYRKA smart air quality sensor is said to be available in all IKEA stores April 2023 onward. That is usually not the case for Malaysia though. Like the SONOS speakers from IKEA, it might take another month or so before you see the VINDSTYRKA on the shelves in IKEA stores across the nation. There are no mentions on pricing either currently. If you are interested in the product, you might want to check IKEA stores by May 2023, or just hang around and we will let you know as soon as we get more information. You also want to keep in mind that the DIRIGERA hub is not yet available in Malaysia. More on the IKEA VINDSTYRKA and smart home products can be found on their website.

Samsung Galaxy Watch ECG & Blood Pressure Apps Gets Green Light in Malaysia

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch wearables are one of the most popular wearables in the market right now. The feature rich smartwatch comes with a bevvy of features including sleep tracking, activity tracking and more. Samsung also brought ECG and blood pressure reading to the lineup since the Galaxy Watch Active2. However, these features has been missing in Galaxy Watch models in many countries across the world including Malaysia. That’s partially due to the feature making the Watch subject to regulatory approvals as a medical device. Thankfully, Samsung was able to release these smartwatches with restrictions still.

That said, things are about to change as a tipster has informed Lowyat.net that the ECG app has been listed in the Malaysian Medical Device Authority (MDA) database. The blood pressure app was green lit late last year. It’s worth noting that the ECG app is not made to replace conventional ECGs with 12 leads. Instead, the app is made for detecting Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) – an arrhythmia which may indicate the need for professional intervention.

With the approvals, Samsung has to just flip the switch with an OTA update to enable the functionality. As of the time of this writing, the features have not been enabled on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro or Watch 4.

OPPO Steps Into Health Devices with the New OHealth H1

OPPO has made a name for itself when it comes to smartphones. Now, the company is looking to make similar advancements in health devices with the OHealth H1; its first health device that combines six vital sensors to bring better, more accurate health metrics. The announcement of the device comes together with the announcement of OHealth becoming an official sub-brand of OPPO.

The OHealth H1 brings together ECG, SpO2 (Blood Oxygen), heart rate, body temperature, sleep tracking and heart and lung auscultation sensors into a single device. While it may seem like the device is intended for medical professionals, but no, OPPO is intending its users to be the everyday Joe and Jane. The H1 is a family health monitor which works together with the OHealth app on smartphones.

OHealth H1 Key Art

The H1 provides more accurate SpO2 readings purely because of the mathematics of things. Using a similar sensor to the ones we have in smartwatches and fitness bands, it measures the SpO2 of the vessels on the fingertips which far outnumber the vessels on the wrist. It is also able to provide body temperature readings by using infrared measurements of the forehead.

In addition, sleep tracking is contactless with the H1. Instead, it measures micromovements from breathing, body movements and heartbeat while being adjacent to the user. OPPO hasn’t clarified how this will work when it comes to shared beds. Using its own OPPO Sense algorithm, the data collected is processed and displayed in the OHealth app. OPPO has also collaborated with Omron to enable blood pressure measurement. It’s also able to work as a digital stethoscope.

OHealth Stethoscope

While OPPO hasn’t announced pricing or availability yet. The OHealth H1 is one of their most innovative devices to date in a brand new category. Not only does it have implications for fitness enthusiasts, but it also empowers telemedicine and better, more personalised healthcare which is an upcoming conversation in patient care and medicine.

The Oceanic+ App is Live! Meet Your New Dive Computer, the Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple launched their most expensive wearable item back in September alongside their Apple iPhone 14 devices. They launched the new Apple Watch Ultra, which was made with space age technology and is built to endure the most extreme conditions you can subject your body to. One of them is to go down to depths you will only go as a scuba diver.

According to Apple, the Watch Ultra can go in depths up to 40 meters. While there are dive watches and computers that can go deeper than that, you want to remember that the Apple Watch Ultra is no bigger than the regular watch and is also built as a watch and fitness tracker you can take anywhere with you. In that sense, the Apple Watch Ultra is a feat on its own.

While it was able to go down to 40 meters under water, and into the ocean for that matter, you could only get basic information from it like a regular watch. It did not have the right tools to record your depth, or how much air you have left, or how long you’ve dived. Until now, that is, with the Oceanic+ app.

The app was also announced when they launched the Apple Watch Ultra, so it should not come as a surprise. The app is not an in-house developed one (developed by Huish Outdoors in collaboration with Apple), that could also be why it launched later than the Watch Ultra itself. It is still 2022 though, so it is not like we had to wait years for it.

The Oceanic+ app basically turns your Apple Watch Ultra into a rather comprehensive dive computer. They say that the app allows the Watch Ultra to act as an advanced dive computer and robust dive planner. Of course, you can review all information post-dive as well.

Source: Apple

The dive computer on the Apple Watch Ultra may not be similar to other dive computers you might have come across. They say that they have built the interface to be as intuitive as possible to be used on the Apple Watch platform. The interface is designed to allow users to quickly get information from the watch and dive stress free without making mental calculations during their dive. That also means that they need to cram and simplify as much information as they can into the tiny display that is the Apple Watch Ultra. It even gives users some form of directive to ensure their safety during the dive with “Stop”, “Go Up”, and even “Go Down”.

They have managed to integrate things like surface time, depth, and gas capacity into an interface that would be familiar to any Apple Watch user. On top of that, the dive planner gives you extra information like tides, water temperatures, weather updates, currents, and updated information uploaded by other users. It even tracks your GPS location, so you know where you are in your dives. You can even tell if you have a notification from the Apple Watch Ultra in the water with the Watch vibrating. They say you can even feel the vibration through a 7mm thick wetsuit. Haptic feedback, according to the developers, is a better way for your watch to communicate with you under water.

The Oceanic+ app is now available for the Apple Watch Ultra via the App Store. Of course, there is a companion app for your iPhone as well where you can view all sorts of information from your Apple Watch post-dive. The Apple Watch Ultra will set you back from MYR 3,799 onward, which is a lot of money for an Apple Watch. Then again, a dive computer will set you back just as much or more.

Garmin Releases Their Most Affordable Smartwatches Yet – the Venu Sq 2 and Venu Sq 2 Music Edition

When we say affordable, you want to take it with a pinch of salt. The new Garmin Venu Sq2 will set you back at least MYR 1,230 still. The Music Edition will set you an extra MYR 250 on top of the regular smartwatch. While it is the most accessible Garmin smartwatch, it is not the cheapest smartwatch you can find out there.

No matter though, this is currently the most affordable Garmin wristwear you can find to date. It may be affordable, but it is still feature packed enough that you are not going to feel like you missed out on the Garmin experience.

It still packs a heart rate tracker, one of the most accurate out there if it is the same one you find on other Garmin watches. Alongside the heartrate tracker are over 25 specific sports mode tracking, that includes running and walking. If you are into running, there is a personal running coach with training plans. Alongside those features, the Garmin Venu Sq 2 packs a sleep monitoring feature, which should be quite standard for most fitness trackers today. There is also specific health tracker for women’s menstrual cycle or pregnancy via the Garmin Connect app.

All of these can be viewed via a square 1.4-inch AMOLED display that is colourful and bright even in the outdoors. If you are the type that is hardly into wearing heavy wristwear, you might hardly notice this one with its lightweight aluminium construction. Within the body is a battery that Garmin claims to last up to 12 days at a time.

Yes, there is a Music Edition for the Garmin Venu Sq, just like the Forerunner series. There are no fundamental design changes from the Music Edition to the regular square smartwatch. It allows you to store up to 500 songs on the watch itself though, including your favourite work out and running playlists on your Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer. That way, you may not even need to bring your smartphone out with you for your runs and work out sessions so that you can just focus.

Apple Launches the Watch Series 8 and Watch SE – The Better Best-Seller

Unfortunately for Android Wear fans, the Apple Watch is the best-selling smartwatch to date. There is a good reason for that though. Apple’s Watch just works, and it does that very well. Every iteration of the Apple Watch is even better than ever before. That case is also true for the latest Apple Watch Series 8 and the new Apple Watch SE.

watchOS 9

  • Apple Watch SE 8up hero 220907
  • Apple Watch S8 2up hero 220907
  • Apple Watch Family Setup 220907
  • Apple Watch S8 Nike 7up hero 220907

The latest Apple Watch 8, Watch SE, and even Watch Ultra come with Apple’s latest watchOS 9. There are no fundamental change in terms of its fundamental interface and looks. The added features for watchOS 9 includes international roaming that allows the Watch to be constantly connected to a network even when you are travelling abroad. Users with AFib conditions can also turn-on the AFib History feature if it is available in their region. The digital Compass App has also been redesigned to show even more information than before. There is a new Workout app too in watchOS 9 that allows in-session views with segments, splits, elevation, and even more precise workout data. Sleep tracking on the new operating system (OS) is also even better than before with more accurate and more comprehensive sleep data on tap. There is even a new Medications interface on the Apple Watch that helps users manage and track their medication schedules via the Health app.

Crash Detection

Apple Watch S8 Crash Detection emergency call 220907
Source: Apple

Apple has pioneered safety technology on the smartwatch with fall detection in their previous Apple Watch. Now, the Apple Watch is even better than before with Crash Detection. The gyroscope and accelerometer on the latest Apple Watch is even more powerful than before. Apple also had to develop entirely new algorithms to allow the Apple Watch to understand car crashes better and to detect when users are in one. They had to simulate various car crashes in test labs to ensure that the Apple Watch can detect when users are involved in a head-on collision, rear-end impact, side-impact, and even rollovers just based on the gyroscopic, acceleration, barometric, GPS, and sound data. After the fact, Apple Watch will check in with its users, like when it detects a fall. If the user does not respond within the next 10 seconds, emergency alert will be sent out to relevant services and even your emergency contacts. Of course, it works best with iPhones.

Even Longer Battery Life

  • Apple Watch S8 stainless steel silver 220907
  • Apple Watch S8 stainless steel gold 220907
  • Apple Watch S8 aluminum starlight 220907
  • Apple Watch S8 aluminum midnight 220907

One of the bigger complaints about the older Apple Watches is its dismal battery life. For the new Apple Watch Series 8, Apple has said that the device can last up to 18 hours, technically an entire day. Apple has also included a new Low Power Mode that is supposed to extend the device’s battery life to up to 36 hours (Watch Series 8) by limiting selected sensors and power-hungry features like always-on display.

More Health Centric Sensors

  • Apple Watch S8 Hermes double tour Lucky Horse face 220907
  • Apple Watch S8 iPhone 14 ovulation estimate wrist temperature 220907
  • Apple Watch S8 possible cycle deviation 220907

You still get all the sensors that are previously found on the Apple Watch Series 7. There is a brand-new sensor that is mainly used to monitor women’s health though. It is a dual sensor that detects body temperature. The two sensors measure two different temperatures at two different points of the watch, one at the back of the watch and the other right under the display. This way, Apple Watch can capture its users body temperature whilst reducing bias from outside environment.

The new added feature also improves sleep health detection by the Apple Watch. The Apple Series Watch 8 samples wrist temperature every five seconds and is so sensitive it measures changes as small as 0.1oC. The Health App allows the users to monitor their sleep health and changes due to exercising, jet lag, or even sickness.

Apple Watch SE

  • Apple Watch SE back aluminum stardust 220907
  • Apple Watch SE aluminum starlight 220907
  • Apple Watch SE aluminum silver 220907
  • Apple Watch SE aluminum midnight 220907

The Apple Watch SE, while is the most accessible Apple watch, is no less powerful than the new Apple Watch Series 8. It still packs the latest S8 SiP processor found in the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. You also get International Roaming alongside Crash Detection features that the Series 8 and the Ultra gets. The only visual difference is that the SE gets a back case made with nylon composite material alongside the aluminium case making it the lightest Apple Watch available currently. The Apple Watch SE also only comes in 40mm and 44mm variants.

Price and Availability

The Apple Watch SE will be available in select regions from the 16th of September 2022 onward. You can choose between midnight, starlight, and sliver colour options. The new Apple Watch SE will set you back US$ 249 (MYR 1,199*) onward. For more information on the Apple Watch SE, you can visit their website.

The Apple Watch Series 8 will be available in select regions also from the 16th of September 2022 onward. You can choose between aluminium (Starlight, Midnight, Silver, PRODUCT RED) and stainless steel (Silver, Graphite, Gold) cases and various band, including the NIKE and Hermès edition bands for the Apple Watch Series 8.
