ASUS ROG 2021 Notebook Series Ups the Ante with RTX 30 Series

Last year NVIDIA announced their next generation GPUs, the GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs that they claim to have the largest generational gap over the older series. It is inevitable then for fans to be asking for the mobile variant of the GPUs to be put in the ever popular and growing gaming notebook market. They are also asking for more budget friendly variants like the RTX 3060 Ti and updated variant of the GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 Ti.

That is not all though, new CPUs are also introduced in 2020 and early 2021. AMD came swinging hard with the new AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPUs with Zen 3 architecture making them the most powerful consumer level CPU overall currently on sale. Intel pushed their own boundaries with their 10nm architecture 11th Generation CPUs early in 2021 too. To be fair though Intel came with the mobile variant of the 11th Generation Core processors early in 2020 before the desktop variants were introduced in 2021.

ASUS kicks of with the new TUF Gaming notebooks, both in 15-inch and 17-inch flavours. You get to choose between an Intel Core i5-11400H and an Intel Core i7-11800H for the ASUS TUF Gaming F15’s (FX506H) processor. That powerful GPU also comes paired with either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 or an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU with 6GB of GDDR6 RAM.

To ensure that you get a smooth gaming performance too, RAM is at up to 16GB for the top-of-the-line TUF Gaming F15 with room to spare. For storage you get a single SSD with 512GB in capacity. The storage is also expandable still with free extra NVMe PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot.

The 15-inch and 17-inch variants both get a 144Hz IPS display that pushes Full HD in resolution. For even more immersive gaming, the TUF Gaming F15 and F17 packs DTS Audio and speaker calibration. Of course, a great gaming experience today also means stable internet connection, and the ASUS TUF Gaming F15 and F17 packs WiFi 6 capabilities alongside Bluetooth 5.2 for extra stable wireless peripheral connection. With 90WHrs 4-cell battery, the TUF Gaming F15 and F17 may not last a whole day, but at least a few hours of use away from the wall socket should be enough for you to get your emails and whatever else done.

The ASUS TUF Gaming F15 with 11th Generation Intel Core i5 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 will be available mid of June 2021 onward at MYR 4,199. The TUF Gaming F17 with 11th Generation Intel Core i5 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 will be available at the end of June 2021 at MYR 4,299. The TUF Gaming F15 with 11th Generation Intel Core i7 with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 will be available at the end of this month (May 2021) onward at MYR 5,599.

For extra portability, you might want to look at the ASUS TUF Gaming Dash F15, a thinner and lighter TUF gaming notebook like no other. At 2kg, it is no ultrabook. Still, it is a light gaming device with the power to match.

The new ASUS ROG STRIX G15 and G17 packs up to the highly acclaimed AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor. With AMD’s processor, the ROG STRIX G15 and G17 is also a powerful creator class GPU. Pair that with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 and you get a capable video editor and gaming notebook that you can take with you anywhere you want.

You get up to 8GB in RAM and up to 512GB in SSD storage. If those are not enough though there is an extra available slot for you to expand your RAM and SSD storage still. An extra 8GB and an extra 512GB of SSD storage would do you nicely for the ASUS ROG STRIX G15 and G17.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, in our books, is one of the notebooks that put AMD’s Ryzen processors name in the gaming laptop map. The first Zephyrus G14 was a brilliant product that received many accolades. That packed the older generation AMD Ryzen 3000 series mind you.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 will be available in Eclipse Grey and Moonlight variants. The ROG Zephyrus G14 with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1650 GPU will come with a non AniMe Matrix shell while the rest of the variants get the AniMe Matrix panel on the shell of the notebook for extra personalisation. The new AMD Ryzen 7 powered ROG Zephyrus G14 notebook is available this month (May 2021) onward and will start at MYR 4,799 and tops out MYR 6,499.

ROG Strix Gets A Skateboarding Makeover in Nyjah Huston Edition

ASUS has been hard at work expanding the influence of the Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand. It’s done this with collaborations with the likes of DJ and producer, Alan Walker and even design firms such as ACRONYM. Their latest collaboration brings together the skateboarding and gaming worlds. The ROG Strix has gotten a makeover befitting 6-time overall and current reigning world skateboarding champion, Nyjah Huston.

The ROG Strix SCAR gets new design accents inspired by some of the signature items skateboarders are familiar with. The vent on the back of the Strix SCAR is framed with a metallic bars akin to the bars on the skate park. More importantly, the laptop’s new design takes Nyjah’s unique style and emblazons his insignia side by side the ROG logo. The skateboard inspired accents continue on the main body of the laptop with a grey and black color and customised keycaps that bring more of Nyjah’s signature style.

Like previous collaborations, the design flair isn’t just on the ROG Strix SCAR itself. The Nyjah-ROG collaboration starts from the packaging with an imposing skull and backed by two skateboards – Nyjah’s logo signature – with the letters R-O-G embossed across it. The taglines for both ROG and Nyjah are emblazoned on the packaging as well across the skull. These accents are only visible under UV light.

The ROG Strix SCAR 17 was the centrepiece of this collaboration. The new Strix SCAR 17 comes with an AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor which is complemented by the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics processor. It also has a Full HD IPS display with a 360Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time – a first in a gaming laptop. The SCAR 17 is also one of the first laptops to come with liquid metal cooling and has optical-mechanical keys on its keyboard.

While you may be dying to get your hands on the special edition of the Strix SCAR 17, the laptop is a one-of-a-kind created especially for the world champion skateboarder and will not be available commercially. However, you can get a piece of the collaboration with a special ROG x Nyjah Huston wallpaper and Instagram filter.

Discord is Coming to Playstation

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) President and CEO, Jim Ryan, announced in a post on the SIE Blog that Discord and Playstation will be coming together in new ways. The news comes on the heels of a failed acquisition by Microsoft of the popular chat platform. The announcement seems to be a commitment by Sony to crossplay which will be coming to their Playstation platform.

Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.

The partnership sees Sony Interactive Entertainment make a minority investment in Discord as part of the platform’s Series H funding. It will also see Discord make its way to Sony’s Playstation platform starting early next year. That said, no details on what Discord coming to Playstation have been revealed. There is some speculation that the partnership may simply be the ability to sign in to Discord with your PSN account while some are more optimistic that the chat platform will see an official app for the Playstation 5 and possibly last generation’s Playstation 4.

Pikafy Your Instax Mini with the New Nintendo-Fujifilm Collaboration

Need a little more Nintendo in your life? Well, Fujifilm is making it a little bit easier to get your Nintendo fix with a new, Switch-themed version of their Instax Mini Link. The collaboration also brings with it a new app that will help you infuse even more Animal Crossing, Pokemon and Mario into your life.

The new collaboration brings a whole lot of Nintendo into the Polaroid-style Instax films. Using the new “Instax mini Link for Nintendo Switch” app, you will be able to add filters and 59 new frames from popular games like Super Mario, Animal Crossing and the new Pokemon Snap game. While the actual printer retains its original design, it comes with a Switch like blue and red accent. If that isn’t Nintendo enough, there’s even a bundle with a Pikachu silicone case.

Using the app is as simple as downloading the official Fujifilm Link app. Using the app, you will be able to edit images and merge them with one of the 59 Nintendo inspired frames. After which, it will send the final image to the connected Fujifilm Instax Mini Link. The printer connects via Bluetooth. You can even print captures from your Nintendo Switch by scanning the QR code from the Switch which will import the image to your smartphone.

The Nintendo inspired Fujifilm Instax Mini Link is slated for release on April 30, 2021. It will set you back USD$100 (MYR410.79) while the Pikachu bundle will cost USD$120 (MYR492.95). The app is free to download and will still function with existing Instax Mini Link printers.

1080p Full HD Comes to PlayStation Now!

Sony is one of the most successful brands in gaming and they are sort of expected to get cloud gaming right. They have the expertise and infrastructure to do so, in the eyes of many in the industry at least. So far though, the reception and implementation has been less than stellar at best; but it works. Do not get us wrong though, cloud gaming is a great alternative to buying your own consoles or build expensive gaming PCs at this day and age, especially when everything is in shortage. To be fair, we have not even gotten our hands on a PlayStation 5 yet.

In that case, Sony’s announcement and launch to PlayStation Now is a great welcome to not just us. It is a huge welcome to people who are stuck at home due to the pandemic in 2020; that is almost every single one person in the world. It is a big welcome to those who cannot afford a console, or even a gaming PC at the moment. It is also the perfect solution to portable gaming, because you can technically play games on your GPU-less slim and light notebook PC. You can technically play games on PlayStation Now on your TV without ever owning a console.

There are some good things to PlayStation Now. Other than playing it on your PC and on your TV without a console, you can do it over your PlayStation 4 as well. While you can only play at 720p, it also means that you spend less on buying games since it is a subscription-based service. You also do not need the game to be installed in your console, which also means you do not need to upgrade your HDD or SSDs when it gets full in the console. The best thing is though, you get to play all of PlayStation’s exclusive titles and all the AAA titles available to the PlayStation console with one subscription. From plenty of reports too, PlayStation Now works, and that matters.

There is a caveat though, you were only streaming the games over at 720p. There are some obvious reasons why, which we will not get into in this article. But that caveat may be no more.

Sony PlayStation has just announced that Full HD 1080p streaming will be available starting this week. Implementations globally will vary depending on regions, but it will happen across regions that already has PlayStation Now available. The addition of Full HD streams also comes with a slew of new games to play from April 2021 onward.

There are no mentions yet on whether Full HD 1080p game streaming will be available across the entire PlayStation Now platform or limited to selected games. The Full HD 1080p stream though brings PlayStation Now up to par with game streaming services like Amazon’s Luna which streams games at a maximum of Full HD 1080p. Google Stadia still boasts 4K resolution support for selected titles, to a degree of success. Competing streaming services are also testing and moving toward Full HD 1080p support so we can expect more cloud gaming services to join PlayStation Now to offer Full HD 1080p gaming experience; a big step up from HD 720p.

Sony’s PlayStation Now is not officially available in Malaysia just yet. If you are planning to look into getting PlayStation Now though, subscriptions start at US$ 9.99 (MYR 41*) a month onward. For now, if you already own a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 console but still want to have the freedom to game anywhere, there is PS Remote Play available as long as you can hook yourself up to a stable high-speed internet connection anywhere in the world.

Acer Launches the Nitro 5 with AMD Ryzen 9 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

PC gaming is not cheap. That is pretty much know though. Consider this, the latest gaming console like the Sony PlayStation 5 and the Microsoft Xbox Series X will set you back between MYR 2,500 to MYR 3,000. The latest entry level gaming PC with the latest hardware will set you back about the same amount of money to be fair if you get a desktop. The caveat is that you will not get the same 4K 120fps experience on the desktop compared to the console. If you want to talk about portable gaming, the prices are even higher.

Of course, there is more to a PC than just gaming though. When you get a gaming PC, your PC doubles as your productivity machine. It will be something that accompanies you into your work and your life. It browses the internet, it edits word documents, and it checks your emails. In the case of notebook PCs, there is more than productivity. Notebook PCs are about productivity on-the-go. Of course, gaming notebooks are about gaming and productivity on-the-go.

While gaming is not cheap, it does not have to be bank breaking though. You can get an entry level gaming notebook now from as low as MYR 3,699. Yes, we are talking about the AMD powered Acer Nitro 5 gaming notebook. Well, it is in the title.

The Nitro 5 for 2021 was technically announced in CES 2021 and is just making its way to Malaysia. The new gaming notebook comes with its own sets of cosmetic updates, as usual, and a few internal upgrades too from its previous iteration, as expected. Most of the upgrades are not really what we expected from an “entry-level” perspective though.

The base model is still pretty “entry-level” at MYR 3,699 (AN515-4S-R9RJ). You get an AMD Ryzen 5 5600H 7nm processor with Zen 3 architecture which should unlock a lot more performance from its previous generation. You also get a respectable NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU for all kinds of gaming needs. If you have a 4K display, this could work too. Just do not expect Ultra graphic settings with super high refresh rates at that kind of resolution.

Still, if you just work with the 15.6-inch display on the notebook, you still get a nice Full HD resolution with 144Hz of refresh rate. With the kind of internals you get, you should hit 144fps easily. You also get 8GB of dual channel RAM too. If you want, you can up that to up to 32GB (16GB x 2). You are not trading off too much storage space either with 512GB of SSD storage. Of course, that is expandable as well.

Thing is, the Acer Nitro 5 is not just an “entry-level” gaming notebook anymore. While you do get the entry-level spec with entry-level pricing, you can spec it up to turn it into a beast too.

You can spec your Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-4S-R49W) with an all-powerful AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor. With that processor, you can also get a high-end NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU with 8GB of DDR6 memory on board to run games at QHD (2K) resolution at a native 165Hz in refresh rate on the 15.6-inch display. With 16GB of DDR 4 RAM included, the Acer Nitro 5 turns into a beast of a gaming PC. You also get 1TB of storage to ensure that you can keep all your favourite games and still have space to spare for other things as well. All of that for MYR 8,999.

Alongside the Acer Nitro 5 gaming notebook, Acer also launches the Nitro QG1241Y P gaming monitor. The Nitro QG1 is a 24-inch display boasting Full HD resolution at 165Hz refresh rate. The VA panel support up to 1ms of response time as well alongside HDR10 support. Of course, like any modern display, there is a BlueLightShield blue light filter and flicker reduction technology to ensure the display does not strain your eyes.

The Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-4S-R9RJ) is now available for pre-order to 16th April 2021 at Acer’s Official Store on Shopee at MYR 3,699. The other variants of the Acer Nitro 5 will be available for pre-order on a later date from 27th to the 29th April 2021 (AN515-4S-R7QR) and 10th-12th May 2021 (AN515-4S-R4KB, AN515-4S-R5C7, AN515-4SR8XM, AN515-4S-R49W). The Acer Nitro QG1 (QG141Y P) 24-inch Full HD display is now available on pre-order until 16th of April 2021 on Acer’s official store on Shopee and Lazada for MYR 699. Lenovo Announces the Legion Phone Duel 2 with 2 Fans and 720Hz Response Rate

[UPDATE 25/06/2021] The Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 is now available in Malaysia via Lenovo Exclusive Stores nationwide and via online official stores on Lazada and Shopee with prices starting from MYR 3,299 (12GB +256GB) and MYR 3,899 (16GB + 512GB).

Lenovo’s first gaming smartphone, the Legion Phone Duel was quite an eccentric device. Just like the ROG Phone, it was made to make gaming on a smartphone as comfortable and as optimised as possible. It was also made with some practicality in mind, with two smaller batteries instead of the usual one larger one. It also has an interestingly positioned pop-up selfie camera that acts as more of a streaming camera when you game than just a regular selfie camera. Of course, the first gaming smartphone from Lenovo’s Legion division had to pack the most powerful hardware of its time.

It did not seem too long ago that Lenovo released its gaming smartphone in Malaysia though. Now, there is a new one. Technically, Lenovo just announced it with no mentions of local (Malaysia) availability yet.

The Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2, they call it. In our opinion, the name is still quite a handful. But enough on the name, more on the device.

The new second generation Legion gaming smartphone packs a lot of similarities to the older generation Legion Phone Duel. For one, it has a similarly placed pop-up selfie camera. It also has two batteries, like the older device. It is also supposed to pack more bite within its aluminium and glass silhouette though.

The main rear cameras are placed differently this time too. Instead of the regular top placement of the device, the main cameras are now at the mid-section of the smartphone. The layout change does give way to additional space for Lenovo to fit two cooling fans into the device though. That also means that the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 does not need an external cooling fan like the ROG Phone. But that also means that the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 is a little on the thick side. We would not know yet though, we have not had a hands-on with it.

The cameras are still the same 64-Megapixel main and 16-Megapixel ultra-wide shooter at the back though. There are dual USB Type-C ports as well still with up to 90W in fast-charging capabilities. Hardware wise, these are where the similarities end.

The Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 gaming smartphone packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 System on a Chip (SoC), the most powerful 5nm SoC you can find in a smartphone today. That powerful SoC is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The powerful internals help push Android 11 along the 6.92-inch 144Hz Full HD AMOLED display.

The same display supports HRD10+ and up to 720Hz of touch sampling rate. 720Hz touch sampling rate, at its availability, makes the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 the fastest responding smartphone in the current market. To make gaming even more immersive with the device too, you get dual haptic feedback system for a more precise response and feel to your games. With up to 8 virtual programmable keys, including four ultrasonic shoulder buttons, you are automatically getting a competitive advantage just on the Legion Phone Duel 2.

The Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 is available in China April onward in Black and White color schemes. It will be available in Europe May 2021 onward with prices starting at EU€ 799 (MYR 3,933*) for the 12GB + 256GB variant or EU€ 948 (MYR 4,667*) for the 16GB + 512GB variant. That is about US$ 950** and US$ 1,128** respectively. There is no information on its availability in the North American region and South East Asian region for now. Dell Ups the Gaming Ante with New Monitors

It’s not all about the new Ryzen powered laptops for Dell. The company is also taking the opportunity to introduce a bunch of new monitors to complete the gaming experience. The new monitors zoom in on the need for high frame rates and the versatility that gamers want. Their new line up is boasting adaptable frame rates and high resolutions that any gamer would drool for.

Dell is introducing a family of three new curved gaming monitors. The monitors use VA panels and come in 27-, 32- and 34-inch sizes. The new curved monitors come equipped with AMD’s FreeSync Premium or Premium Pro certification for smooth, tear-free gaming. Spearheading the new offerings is the large, 34-inch Dell 34 Curved Gaming monitor. The WQHD monitor comes with 90% coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut and 144Hz refresh rate. The monitor also supports VESA DisplayHDR 400. The smaller Dell 27 and 32 Curved gaming monitors come with QHD resolution and support 165Hz refresh rate with 2ms response time.

If curved monitors isn’t your thing, Dell is also introducing the new Dell 25 Gaming Monitor which comes with 240Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time. The quick refresh rate and response times will be a boon for competitive gamers. Unlike the curved monitors, the Dell 25 Gaming Monitor comes with IPS panels which provide better colour accuracy and smoother gameplay. It is also both NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium certified.

Dell has not announced the pricing for the new gaming monitors. However, they will be available starting end of June 2021.

Dell & Alienware Ryzen to the Occasion with All-new AMD Powered Line up

It’s been over a decade since Alienware has released an AMD powered gaming laptop. Over a decade since the original Alienware Aurora mALX. In that time, gaming has taken a quantum leap with new experiences being more immersive than ever. That changes today with both Dell and Alienware announcing new AMD powered laptops.

The new laptops marry AMD’s revolutionary, performance and efficiency centered Zen 3 microarchitecture with NVIDIA’s graphics prowess to bring their best gaming experience yet. The Dell G15 Ryzen Edition and the redesigned Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition bring together some of Dell and Alienware’s best design with top of the line performance for gaming.

Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition

Alienware super charges their m15 line up with their signature technological features such as voltage gated cooling with the performance combo of AMD’s Ryzen 5000-H processors and NVIDIA’s RTX30 series graphics. All this power is packed into a slim 15-inch body with options to fit any gamers’ needs. On the display front, users get to choose from options including a QHD with 240Hz refresh rate and an FHD display wiht 360Hz refresh rate.

Smooth visuals and power packed performance is just the tip of the iceberg. The new Alienware m15 is also the first to come with Alienware’s new Legend 2.0 design language which features a sleeker silhouette and a new design feature called Dark Core. This darkens the interior shade of the laptop helping you focus on the game; while the new Silky-smooth High-Endurance paint formula will keep things clean and sleek. It is also the first 15-inch Alienware laptop to come with user upgradable 3200MHz DDR4 RAM. Of course, it will also feature the option for the new mechanical keyboard co-developed with Cherry MX with per key RGB lighting.

Dell G15 Ryzen Edition

Dell’s foray into AMD powered gaming laptops comes in the form of the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition. The new gaming laptop comes with Alienware inspired thermals which maximise airflow and improve cooling. Of course, the laptop comes with Dell Gaming’s signature “Game Shift” button which kicks the laptop into high gear. Similar to the Alienware m15, the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition comes with performance centric combination of AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors, NVIDIA’s RTX 30 Series graphics and user upgradable 3200MHz RAM. On the display front it will be coming with low blue light emitting displays with options for 120Hz or 165Hz refresh rates. Additional options for 360Hz displays will be coming later this spring according to Dell.

Pricing & Availability

Dell and Alienware haven’t announced the pricing for the laptops just yet. However, the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition will be available in early May 2021. The Dell G15 Ryzen edition is expected to be available at the same time.

Acer Refreshed the Nitro 5 & Helios 300 in Malaysia

Just as the Asia Pacific Predator League kicks off, Acer has taken the opportunity to refresh two of their most popular gaming laptops: the Nitro 5 and the Helios 300. The two gaming laptops come with refreshed graphics and processors for better gaming prowess.

The Predator Helios 300 gains the honour of being the first Predator laptop to come with NVIDIA’s RTX3060 graphics processor. The new setup comes with either the 10th generation Intel Core i5-10500H or the 10th generation Intel Core i7-10870H processors. The processor is paired with 8GB of DDR4 RAM. If you need more power, the laptop supports up to 32GB of RAM. In addition, it comes with 512GB of SSD with an addition NVMe and HDD slot for expansion. The Helios 300 comes with a 15.6-inch IPS display with Full HD resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. It’s complemented with DTS:X Ultra audio and 3D simulated surround sound. Acer has also packed its signature dual AeroBlade 3D fans for more efficient cooling to ensure your gaming sessions aren’t perturbed by overheating.

Acer’s Nitro 5, on the other hand, comes with the 11th Generation Intel Core series processors with 8GB of DDR RAM clocked at 3200MHz. It’s complemented by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650 and 512GB of NVMe SSD memory. It also supports up to 32GB of RAM if you need to up the ante and also has an extra M.2 slot for more storage. It also comes with a 15.6-inch IPS display with a 144Hz refresh rate and Full HD resolution.

Pricing & Availability

The Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop is available at Acer authorised resellers nationwide and the Acer Online Stores. The Nitro 5 with the Core i7-11370H processor retails at MYR4,399 (USD$1,064.75) while the Core i5-11300H version will set you back MYR3,799 (USD$919.52).

The Predator Helios 500 is also available at the same channels for MYR5,299 (USD$1282.59) for the Core i5 version and MYR5,999 (USD$1452.02) for the Core i7 version.
