PlayStation is expanding its lineup of special edition hardware with a new, distinct design: the DualSense Wireless Controller – Icon Blue Special Edition. This accessory is a direct celebration of the brand’s “storied heritage” and its deep association with the color blue, which has symbolized PlayStation since the moment the original console powered on decades ago.
This reveal is part of a broader tease of new PlayStation-inspired merchandise, offering fans new ways to express their dedication to the console and its famous characters.
Hardware Aesthetics: Layers of Blue and Katakana
The Icon Blue Special Edition stands out from the existing palette of DualSense controllers—which include colors like Starlight Blue and Cobalt Blue—by committing entirely to layered shades of the brand’s core signature hue. The design captures the feeling of anticipation and wonder that players experience every time they pick up the controller.
The unique technical and design elements include:
- Layered Shades of Blue: The controller is composed entirely of different shades of blue, avoiding accents of black or white to maximize the visual tribute to the PlayStation brand heritage.
- Glossy Patterned Touch Pad: The touchpad features a subtle, glossy pattern of PlayStation’s iconic shapes—the circle, square, triangle, and X. This detail blends nostalgia with the modern design of the console.
- A Nod to Origins: As a direct tribute to the brand’s beginnings and its Japanese roots, the controller includes Katakana characters on the back. These characters spell out the name the Japanese way: Pureisutēshon.
Beyond the aesthetic, the controller retains the immersive technology that defines the PS5 experience. It features haptic feedback to simulate in-game sensations and adaptive triggers that adjust force and tension according to player input, along with a built-in microphone for quick communication.
