Chula Launches “Microbes to Clean Marine Oil Spill Bioproducts”

BANGKOK, Oct. 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Chula Faculty of Science has developed bioproducts to clean up marine oil spills from a research on oil-eating microbes while getting ready to expand to industrial-scale production for ecological sustainability.

The bioproducts to clean sea oil spills
The bioproducts to clean sea oil spills

Major marine oil spills that leave residual pollutants have detrimental effects on the economy, tourism, as well as the marine environment in the long run. One solution is oil-eating microbes bioproducts developed with clean technology by the Center of Excellence in Microbial Technology for Marine Pollution Treatment, Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Onruthai Pinyakong.

Concept Origins
“Usually, managing oil spills starts with physical methods, like oil booms, or oil dispersants followed by biodegradation, which is slow and unpredictable. So, if the biodegradation process can be accelerated, it should bring about major benefits,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onruthai who then turned to “oil-eating microbes”.

Thailand — the source of quality and diverse microorganisms
To accelerate the biodegradation process, sufficient quantities of effective oil-eating microbes developed into bioproducts with a long shelf life must be used.

Thailand has high biodiversity — a good source of pollutants-degrading microorganisms. Pollutant eating and biosurfactants producing microorganisms were thus selected from previously contaminated sites with high biodiversity such as marine sediments, sediments from mangrove forests, as well as water or soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. They were then cultured and multiplied while ensuring that the isolated microorganisms are not pathogenic, and safe for users and the environment. The isolated toxins-digesting microbes, aka oil-eating microbes, were then developed into 3 types of lab products:

  • Ready-to-use liquid formula suitable for contaminated sand or soil.
  • Microbial product pellets suitable to treat contaminated soil or sand while promoting aeration and biodegradation.
  • Microbial immobilization suitable for contaminated water.

Expanding research into industrial production

This research has received widespread feedback and support from both the public and private sectors who give much importance to the Bio-Circular-Green Economic Model which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

If these bioproducts to clean marine oil spills can reach commercial-scale production and use, they will be part of the BCG Economy using truly clean technology, which the research team is ready to transfer to investors and interested parties to collaborate and develop in the future.

Samsung’s Batteries Are Bloating and It’s Happening More Often Than You Think

It’s not every day that problems literally come to haunt a company. In 2016, Samsung had the biggest tech scandal in the past decade with its most popular device – the Galaxy Note 7 – becoming an explosive hit. Now it looks like the problem is back to haunt them in newer devices.

Samsung phones are Blowing Up - Here’s Why.

Tech YouTuber, Arun Rupesh Maini – better known as Mr WhoseTheBoss – has recently released a video highlighting a confounding problem that he faced almost exclusively with his Samsung devices. The issue came to light when he realised that his Galaxy Note 8 had its back detached due to the battery expanding. Keep in mind, that the same issue was at the centre of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 fiasco back in 2016. While it would seem like the issue was occurring exclusively on Note devices, he also noted that the same thing happened on his Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S10. It’s worth noting also that the phones were not actively being used but were powered down for storage.

Thinking it was a remote issue and possibly caused by the recent heatwave in the UK, he proceeded to turn to the internet. The issue, however, seemed to be a well-known fact swept under the rug. In fact, Samsung themselves reached out to Mrwhosetheboss requesting that the phones be passed back to Samsung for further investigation. It’s been about 2 months since and there hasn’t been any word from the manufacturer.

More interestingly, it began to surface that other tech reviewers were facing the same issue. Matt Ansini from This Is shared a similar tweet noting that every Samsung phone that was more than three years old in storage had experienced the same issue. Upon further investigation, Mrwhosetheboss noticed that the same had happened to a number of Samsung devices in his storage including the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was on the verge of doing the same.

Source: Mrwhosetheboss (YouTube)

Another prolific Tech Youtuber – Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD – is also featured in the video noting the same occurrence in his own stash of devices. He mentions, “We always find like one or maybe two phones that the battery’s swollen up and have to get rid of it. And every single time it’s been a Samsung phone.” The same occurrence was noted by Zack Nelson from the popular YouTube channel JerryRigEverything. However, Zack provided an explanation noting the likely cause is the degradation of the electrolyte in the battery which releases a gaseous byproduct that is causing the bloating. Zack did further investigations to puncture the bloated batteries noting that Samsung has put in multiple measures to prevent the battery from exploding. However, he did note that it would be risky to charge the battery.

If the situation sounds familiar, it’s because Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7, had a similar issue which resulted in early units combusting in various situations. The common thread, however, was that the phones in each case were charging or had been charged very recently before the explosive event. What’s more disturbing is that after the fiasco, Samsung did take to the stage to apologise and reaffirm its commitment to end-user safety. In fact, the company highlighted multiple steps that it would be taking to ensure that the issue wouldn’t reoccur. So how are we here – again?

image 1
Source: Mrwhosetheboss (YouTube)

Having seen the video, we did a check on our own Samsung devices here at techENT. So far, we haven’t noticed any bloating in the Galaxy S7 or the Note 5 that we had in storage. The older Galaxy A7 also seems to be in good condition on the outside. It is worth noting that the Galaxy S7 was actually still being used until very recently and had a very diminished battery capacity.

That said, Arun and Zack also highlight an issue that should be more worrying to consumers. Every battery shipped, has a marking which informs consumers that they are supposed to remain inert without any chemical changes for a given amount of time. A majority of the devices that have been highlighted are marked with a 5-year guarantee. So, how are we seeing devices that are as recent as two years facing this issue?

The simple answer would be that Samsung has a major problem when it comes to manufacturing the batteries whether it is in the electrolytes themselves or any other part of the manufacturing. It’s more alarming that Samsung’s own quality controls have failed to detect the issue before these devices.

That said, we’re not chemical engineers nor are we experts in battery manufacturing. We’ll have to wait to see what Samsung says about the issue now that it’s out in the open.

DJI Enterprise launches the Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T – Not Your Average Mavic 3

DJI’s Mavic 3 launched a few months back. It is, in our opinions, one of DJI’s most innovative product to date. The feature packed compact drone is really a demonstration of DJI’s technological superiority when it comes to drone technology.

While compact drones like the Mavic 3 have its roots found in the demand in the end-user segment for aerial photography and videography, it holds more potential that goes beyond just amateur filmography. Thanks to its lightweight and compact construction, the industrial application could be limitless for a Mavic 3.

The Mavic 3 for enterprises comes in two flavors, the Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T. The difference? You get a thermal enabled camera on the Mavic 3T while the Mavic 3E boasts a powerful camera system that allows you to accurately map out an area or pinpoint points of interest with 56x hybrid zoom. The thermal camera on the Mavic 3T allows you to also pinpoint subjects of interest via heat signatures. At the same time, the Mavic 3T packs a 28x side-by-side digital zoom for even better accuracy in detecting subjects and comparison.

DJI MAV3T La 8

Thanks to DJI’s know how in long-range remote technology, the drones can be flown up to 15km away from base (remote). They call the technology DJI O3 Enterprise Transmission and it is even more powerful than the antennas you can find on any consumer grade DJI products. The technology also allows users to view its feed live at 1080p/30fps with minimal interruption.

The Mavic 3 for pro-sumers is already a potent drone with state-of-the-art safety features and measures. The one for Enterprises gets all the same innovative features for safer and easier flight. It also includes DJI AirSense, a system that automatically detects traditional aircrafts in the area and warns its users of surrounding air traffic. At the same time, the DJI APAS System 5.0 is improved to ensure that the Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T do not fly blindly into obstacles.

Made for all sorts of applications, the DJI Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T can be attached with a selection of modules to ensure that the Mavic 3 is properly tailored for specific use cases. For one, the remote that the DJI Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T can work with is the DJI RC Pro Enterprise that fits a 1,000-nit display for clear visibility even in direct sunlight. With the RTK Module, the Mavic 3E and Mavic 3T becomes an aerial measuring tool that measures down to centimeters. Ensuring that your Mavic 3E or Mavic 3T is properly always located for emergencies is the D-RTK 2 Mobile Station with GNSS receiver. You can even send the drone packing a speaker for either crowd control or direct communication via the drone and remote combination.

DJI MAV3T La 9

Of course, hardware is only one part of the story. The Mavic 3 made for enterprises comes with a suite of apps and software to support and make sense of all its sophisticated hardware. For the Enterprise series, there is the DJI Pilot 2 app with improved interfaces for even better experiences than before. Payloads can also be easily controlled via the app if they can interface with the drone. At the same time, the DJI Pilot 2 can be used as a monitor for users.

To manage a fleet of drones, DJI developed the FlightHub 2 as well to always locate and manage your fleet with route planning efficiently and effectively. DJI Terra can be used to map entire areas for mission planning and even 2D or 3D modelling of an area. For the Mavic 3T, the DJI Thermal Analysis Tool 3.0 helps with analysis, annotations, and processing of all images captured by the thermal camera for temperature changes and abnormalities.

Chinese Hot-Water Bags Sweep Europe Merchants from Yiwugo Get Busy with Orders

YIWU, China, Oct. 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Yiwu is the world’s capital of commodities, Yiwugo.com is the official website of the Yiwu Commodity Market, which is the largest commodity wholesale market in the world. Yiwugo hosts 50,000 merchants and 10 million registered buyers, 10% of whom are overseas buyers. It has 800,000 daily average visits and a daily average PV of 15 million. According to the latest statistics from Yiwugo and the feedback from merchants, the number of European buyers purchasing hot-water bags has grown significantly, with the regular water injection type is the mainly-purchased product.

Sales doubled from the previous year at the beginning of the peak season.

Jingyang Daily Necessities is an established international trade enterprise with a history of more than 30 years. 12 years ago, Chen Jianping took the business over from her parents. For enterprises in Yiwugo, there are usually two peak seasons every year. The first begins from July and lasts till October as boosted by buyers from the northern hemisphere, and the second from the end of the year till next spring, as boosted by buyers from South America. This year is unusual. Although the first peak season has just been halfway through, enterprises’ sales volume has already doubled from last year.

Chen explained that, due to the impact of repeated Covid-19 outbreaks at home and abroad, most orders were placed by long-time buyers instead of new ones in the past two years. This year, however, the number of new customers, particularly end customers, has suddenly surged. Most of them are from Europe, looking for water injection hot-water bags. As electric heating hot-water bags were previously popular exports to countries such as India, it is unusual to see water injection type gaining popularity in Europe.

In fact, this is closely attributed to the rising energy price in Europe. The natural gas price in Europe has reportedly reached more than 10 times that of the same period last year; the anthracite price has been three times that of the same period last year; the electricity price has increased by 12 folds from the previous year. The German government announced that it would levy a “natural gas surcharge” from October, and Italy has shortened the heating period by 15 days for this winter.

The surging energy price this year has driven up the heating cost, especially for European people living in frigid high-latitude regions. As such, the traditional affordable water injection hot-water bags have suddenly become their favourite choice. Even though European people have also started to use water injection hot-water bags, they have never lost their aesthetic sense and pride. According to Chen, European consumers favour fashionable, high-quality hot-water bags with high rubber content and European architectural style of decorative imprints.

The popularity of hot-water bags in Italy and other European countries aroused Chen’s curiosity. She later figured that a significant number of buyers had come around by searching the English site of Yiwugo. Although many orders placed were small or medium ones, they were still “fresh blood”, and all the buyers were overseas wholesalers. This encouraged Chen and made her confident about her decision last year to launch new products continuously and establish an international site on Yiwugo.

Some of the new customers were referred to Chen by merchants of home textiles, quilts and other warm-keeping products in Yiwu market. There are also merchants in other lines of business who are entrusted by customers to make purchases, or those who recommend Jingyang Daily Necessities to buyers after they found the company on Yiwugo. The buyers will then have intermediaries such as international trade companies to make purchases directly from Jingyang.

Chen explained that there had been signs of this purchase frenzy since the first half of the year. From April to May, some well-established buyers, including those from European countries such as Italy, already stocked a large quantity of water injection hot-water bags. But this was not common practice at the time, so it did not attract much attention of merchants.

Domestic-oriented enterprises generated more export sales than domestic sales this year.

Yu Fengchao, owner of Yiwu Junma Hot Water Bottle Factory, is running an established international trade factory of water injection hot-water bags. The factory was established over 30 years ago, receiving orders mainly from Spain.

As a second-generation business executive, Yu took the business over exactly ten years ago. To date, his factory has been a member store on Yiwugo for five years. A Spanish new customer contacted Yu on Yiwugo this July. After they communicated with each other for a while, the customer, without meeting Yu in person, placed an order of more than RMB 100,000 for high-quality hot-water bags, mostly in the shape of cartoon characters and covered with insulating cloth.

Yu explained that the water injection hot-water bag, which is a home-grown product, used to be sold domestically. Since July, however, many new buyers have emerged from European countries such as Spain and Italy. Driven by the recent trend towards original design, new models are launched in the second half of each year. In this peak season, export sales have surpassed domestic sales.

It is mutual trust that has led an overseas new customer to place his very first order for more than RMB 100,000. Besides faithful communication between the two sides, Yiwugo, a third-party platform, has also played a vital role as a guarantor for them to build trust. As enterprises divert more resources into Yiwugo in recent years, the platform has also yielded better results for them, thus forming a virtuous circle of win-win cooperation.

2022 marks the 40th anniversary of Yiwu market, as well as the 10th anniversary of Yiwugo as the largest e-commerce platform in China. As the market enters the second generation in the past decade, more and more young merchants are choosing Yiwugo as their partner. Likewise, Yiwugo will join hands with them to embrace a brighter future.

Recapping 50 years of China-Japan relations: What the future holds

BEIJING, Sept. 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from China.org.cn on the 50th anniversary of the normalization of ChinaJapan diplomatic ties:

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of ChinaJapan diplomatic ties, which serves as a significant opportunity for the two countries to review the past and take a look into the future. In September 1972, China and Japan first signed a joint communique; several years later, the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed after approval by legislative authorities. Different from how China established diplomatic relationships with other countries like the U.S., the Soviet Union and South Korea, this “two-step mode”, a pivotal political decision, embodied the strategic insights and political courage of the statesmen of the elder generation of the two countries. It also reflects the oriental wisdom with which the two countries seek common ground while reserving differences in pursuit of harmony and peace. The normalization of ChinaJapan diplomatic ties ushered in half a century of peace, friendship and cooperation for the two countries, bringing huge benefits to both countries and their peoples, while contributing enormously to the peace, stability and development of Asia and the world.

Since negotiations commenced between China and Japan, the latter has made solemn pledges to China that “there is only one China in the world” and “Taiwan is an inseparable part of China.” This position is captured in the four political documents and a series of important consensus between China and Japan. The Taiwan question is essential to the political foundation and fundamental trust between China and Japan. Proper handling of this question was the precondition and foundation for the normalization of the two countries’ diplomatic ties, and for a positive outlook on ChinaJapan relations.

China and Japan are neighbors in east Asia, and it’s not rare for neighbors to have frictions. But the key lies in how they cope with it. Countries should honor their commitments in foreign policy; the political consensus of “being cooperative partners and not threats to each other” should also be upheld.

In Confucius’ Analects, there reads a line, “At fifty, I knew the decrees of heaven.” Now that ChinaJapan diplomatic ties have reached their 50th anniversary, the two countries should be the masters of their own future: Draw lessons from historical experience where “cooperation benefits both and collision harms both”, stick to the original aspiration of diplomatic normalization, level up dialogue and other channels of communications, deepen cooperation in various fields, and jointly create another fifty years of peaceful coexistence and mutual benefit for the two countries.

Sony’s Latest FX30 is the New Compact Super 35 4K Camera for the Future, Or So They Say

You may say that cinema cameras are a little unnecessary. In most cases, you will be right, they offer very little in terms of photography in both professional and enthusiast segments. Unlike regular photography cameras, they are much bulkier too. Not to mention, they are a lot more expensive to work with while not offering much more in terms of pixel count. Your smartphones today can shoot at up to 8K resolution, or 4K 120fps. So why is Sony’s latest FX30 important?

It is important simply because it is one of the most compact cinema cameras to come off Sony’s production line. We want to say that the FX30 is technically the spiritual successor to the Sony FX3 introduced a few years ago. While it contains all the right traits to be one, it is a unique camera on its own though.

The Sony FX3 was technically a repackaged Sony α7S III in a cinema camera guise. It featured a larger body that is also a different colour (grey instead of black). The larger body houses bigger heatsinks and fans to dissipate heat more effectively from the 12-Megapixel sensor that shoots videos at 4K 120fps (up to). The FX30 is different.

Source: Sony

The Sony FX30 packs a more powerful (technnically speaking) video sensor that pushes 20.1-Megapixel instead of the 12 that the FX3 has. It is not a full-frame sensor like the FX3 though. Instead, it is an APS-C Exmor R SMOS sensor with back-illumination that offers a rather high ISO sensitivity.

The APS-C sensor also means that the camera shoots at Super 35 format by default. At that, the camera oversamples the footages from 6K at up to 60fps to scale it down to 4K formats. You can even get the camera to shoot at 120fp (4K) or 240fps (Full HD) if you want that extra smooth feel or that beautiful looking slow motions. Of course, all these are shot at 10-bit 4:2:2 internally. If you have an external recorder that is capable, you can output to 4K 16-bit RAW formats.

With the latest Sony cameras, you want to shoot videos at S-Log3 for even more details and vibrant footage than before with colour grading. Sony’s cinema line-up of cameras offers ever better gamma settings though. You get something called the S-Cinetone for Sony’s signature cinematic look in combination with BIONZ XR engine.

Of course, the BIONZ XT engine also means you get a full suite of Sony’s clever technology for its Alpha cameras. Real-time Eye AF tracking for humans, animals, and birds allows you to keep your subject in full focus quickly no matter where they go within the frame. In combination with AF Assist, autofocusing in a compact camera has never been this easy. There is even a Focus Map that allows the camera to compensate for breathing effects and set your depth of field before you take your final shot. For run-and-gun situations, the Active Mode works with the built-in 5-axis stabilizer with time code synchronization for rock steady footages even in freehand shooting situations.

Alongside the FX30, Sony launches two new CFexpress Type A cards. You can now get the XFexpress Type A card in 320GB and 640GB flavours in addition to the current 80GB and 160GB variants. Like the existing cards, the CFexpress Type A cards offer 700 MB/s write speeds, which is overkill considering that 4K 120fps videos only writes at up to 400 MB/s at the maximum. The new TOUGH cards are also IP57 water and dust resistant.

The Sony FX30 comes in the FX30 and FX30B variants. Bost will be available November onward in Malaysia. There is no official pricing detail for Malaysia just yet, but we are keeping our ears close to the ground for that.
