LG Energy Solution Announces Fourth Quarter and FY 2021 Results

  • Reports quarterly revenue of KRW 4.44 trillion, 10.2 percent higher than previous quarter; operating profit at KRW 76 billion
  • Targets revenue goal of KRW19.2 trillion with plans to spend KRW 6.3 trillion in capital expenditures for 2022

SEOUL, South Korea, Feb. 8, 2022 — LG Energy Solution (LGES; KRX: 373220) today reported solid performance in the fourth quarter of 2021, with consolidated revenue of KRW 4.44 trillion, up 10.2 percent from the previous quarter. The quarterly revenue growth was mainly driven by robust demand of pouch and cylindrical battery cells for electrical vehicles and small-sized pouch batteries for IT devices. The company posted consolidated operating profit of KRW 76 billion, since turning to profit in the fourth quarter.

For the full year, LGES reported KRW 17.85 trillion in revenue, up 42 percent from 2020. Annual operating profit was at KRW 768.5 billion while operating profit margin was 4.3 percent. The booming performance comes on the back of solid demand for electric vehicles as well as cylindrical batteries for EVs and light EVs.

The annual earnings result took multiple factors into account, including a voluntary recall with General Motors for Chevrolet Bolt EV batteries, a recall of batteries for energy storage system (ESS) and a lump-sum payment of license fee from another industry player. Were it not for these one-time factors, LG Energy Solution’s annual revenue would stand at KRW 16.86 trillion, its operating profit at KRW 917.9 billion.

In 2022, LGES expects its revenue to reach KRW 19.2 trillion, up 8 percent on-year, over expectations of steady EV market growth. Without the aforementioned one-off factor, the revenue would be 14 percent higher, on-year.

In 2022, LGES plans to steadily expand its manufacturing capacity as its major partnering automakers plan to introduce new lineups of electric vehicles. LG Energy Solution is forecasting to see an improved market condition as the global chip shortage is expected to ease in the latter half of the year.

In preparation of the upcoming boost in global EV sales, LG Energy Solution is putting KRW 6.3 trillion in capital expenditures, up 58 percent compared to last year. With it, LGES aims to finance capacity expansion at its global manufacturing facilities including JV plants with GM.

"LG Energy Solution will excel by prioritizing the fundamentals of quality and securing profitability," said Youngsoo Kwon, CEO of LG Energy Solution. "LGES will continue to move forward with bold investment plans needed in the long run. We are confident our business model of preparing for the future will definitely help us lead the industry."

Samsung’s Future Devices Will Contain Recycled Materials, that is a Good Thing

Two years ago, we see major phone makers deciding that they are excluding charging adapters. That stunt was said to be in the name of environmental friendliness. More recently, we see major PC builders starting to launch products that are supposed to be more eco-friendly than ever.

To be fair, all these environmental sustainability program from corporation are nothing new. Manufacturers have been looking for ways to make their products more sustainable and more environmentally friendly. One of the most common practices for a long time was to design and manufacture their product’s packaging from recyclable materials with environmentally friendly printing substances. In a lot of cases as well, they even use recycled papers as the tray that is being used within the packaging as well.

Last year, we saw Samsung announcing their own sustainability program. They call it the “Galaxy for the Planet” initiative and they aim to do a few things with it leading up to 2025. With the initiative, Samsung aims to minimise waste from their own products by 2025. With that, they are also planning to reduce plastic usage in the same time frame. At the same time, Samsung is also planning to make their chargers more efficient while providing same charging speeds.

In accordance with their announcement, they made another announcement just ahead of Samsung’s most anticipated event in the beginning of the year, the Unpacked 2022 event; the same event that we expect to see Samsung launching their flagship candy bar, the Galaxy S22. Ahead of the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung has mentioned that they are going to be starting to use discarded fishing nets as part of their source of materials for their devices. Effectively, Samsung is also saying that they are going to be incorporating plastics that are recycled from the oceans into their material lists.

Why Fishing Nets?

Ocean bound plastics main2
Source: Samsung

Of course, Samsung is not the first company to start using ocean plastics in their manufacturing, they are the first to deviate from what other manufacturers choose to work with. They are the first company to specifically use abandoned and discarded fishing nets from the ocean. It is a bigger problem than you think.

The fishing industry has been one of the most important industries for humanity. Fishing has kept humanity sustained since the beginning of time. But fishing has also caused a lot of pain, not for humanity directly, but for the ecology that has kept humanity surviving for many lifetimes.

Plastic based fishing nets have been around for centuries. While it is cheap and durable to work with, it does more harm than good when left alone. While environmentalists hardly speak of abandoned fishing nets or ‘ghost nets’ as a common problem, it is a problem. When fishing nets are left alone, it can still trap marine life, damage coral reefs, and eventually destroy the ecology that has kept humanity surviving for many centuries.

It is estimated that there is about 640,000 tons of fishing nets that are abandoned and discarded every year in the ocean. It is also said that fishing nets make up about 10% of the total 12 million tonnes of plastic waste that finds their way to the ocean.

Samsung ends the announcement with; “Learn more about our vision for a sustainable future at Unpacked”. Currently there are no confirmed products that will feature PCM (Post Consumer Materials) in Samsung’s line-up. While we have a good idea of what the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy Tab S8 will look like, Samsung has not shared the materials that they will be using.

Before this announcement we assumed that Samsung will be using the same materials as before; mostly aluminium, or glass, and some plastics. After the announcement though, we are not entirely sure. The Samsung Galaxy S22 devices and Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 could feature some PCMs within its build. What we are sure of though is that future Samsung devices will contain a percentage of PCM in their build.

What we are sure of as well is that we will find out more in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. Find out what you can expect from Samsung’s flagship in their upcoming launch in our write up. For more information on Samsung’s latest initiative, you can also visit their newsroom.

CGTN: Peng Liyuan encourages cultural exchanges between China and Ecuador

BEIJING, Feb. 7, 2022 — Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Saturday met with Maria de Lourdes Alcivar, first lady of Ecuador, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The conversation revolved around fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and the cultural exchanges between the two countries.

In a chamber decorated with China’s peonies and Ecuador’s roses, Peng warmly welcomed Alcivar, who accompanied Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso to the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games on Friday.

Hailing Beijing’s efforts to host the Winter Olympics despite the COVID-19 impact, Alcivar expressed appreciation for China’s assistance to Ecuador in fighting the pandemic and wished the athletes of both countries success in the Games.

Knowing that Alcivar was interested in traditional Chinese culture, Peng arranged a Peking Opera show and introduced the long history and artistic features of Peking Opera to her. They enjoyed excerpts from classics "Sell Water" and "Drunken Concubine" together.

Alcivar praised the excellent performance of the artists and said she hoped to learn more about traditional Chinese culture in the future.

Peng said joint efforts can be made to deepen cultural and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between China and Ecuador to enhance mutual understanding.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Rumour Round-Up – Everything You Need To Know

Samsung’s next flagship is set to make its official debut in a few days. The Galaxy S lineup has always been the company’s pride and joy. It looks like this year is no different with Samsung packing their latest and greatest technologies into the new Galaxy S22. This includes the much anticipated AMD RDNA2 touting Exynos 2200 with its new XClipse graphics technology. So, what else can we expect? Here’s a quick rundown of all the leaks ahead of the launch on 9th February 2022.

Packed to the Brim with Tech

It comes as no surprise that Samsung’s new Galaxy flagship will be pushing the latest and greatest technologies. When it comes to their processors, the Galaxy S22 series is going to be running on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the U.S. while the rest of the world will be getting the Exynos 2200. Well, that’s if Samsung doesn’t just go full-on Exynos 2200 to show off its new XClipse technology. You can get all the details in our coverage of the announcement of the Exynos 2200.

That said, the performance of the processors remains the biggest unknown of the new Galaxy S22 series. Both processors have limited or no reliable benchmarks or performance indicators out there just yet – particularly when it comes to the Exynos 2200. However, if Samsung’s track record is anything to go by, it shouldn’t be a worry as their flagships have always been up to snuff.

Galaxy S22 Rumours 1
Galaxy S22 Rumours 2

Aside from the processor, it looks like we might be seeing a bump in the lowest RAM version of the S22, S22+ and S22 ultra as it’s expected that the series will come with at least 8GB of RAM. However, storage wise, rumours point to the S22 series sticking to the minimum of 128GB.

Click, click, Space Zoom

When it comes to screens, Samsung is rumoured to be using its Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels across the S22 series. All versions of the Galaxy S22 seem to support a 120Hz refresh rate. The Galaxy S22 is rumoured to have a 6.1-inch display while the S22+ is rumoured to have a 6.6-inch display. Both are also rumoured to come with FHD+ resolution. The S22 Ultra, however, is rumoured to come with a 6.8-inch QHD+ panel instead.

Samsung’s big push when it comes to the S22 series this year seems to be with camera technologies. That said, their approach seems to be taking a focus on the software. Hardware-wise, rumours point to the S22 and S22+ having a triple camera setup. Both are indicated to come with a 50-megapixel main camera with an f/1.8 aperture complemented with a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (f/2.2) and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (f/2.4). On the front, both are rumoured to be equipped with a 10-megapixel selfie camera (f/2.2). The Space Zoom on the S22 and S22+ cap out at 30x.

Galaxy S22 Rumours 4
Galaxy S22 Rumours 5
Galaxy S22 Rumours 6

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is coming with a more robust setup similar to the S21 Ultra. It will come with a quad-camera setup with a laser autofocus sensor. The main camera is a 108-megapixel with an f/1.8 aperture. This is complemented by a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor (f//2.2) and two 10-megapixel telephoto cameras (f/2.4 and f/4.9). The telephoto sensor with a larger f/4.9 aperture is intriguing as it also indicates better low light performance.

Same, Same But Different

When it comes to the overall design of the Galaxy S22 series. It seems like Samsung has decided that it will stick to its highly praised design of the Galaxy S21 series. Leaks and rumours both have shown the same design for the S22 and S22+ with the raised camera module being encased in the metal frame of the smartphone. That said, we’ve yet to see if Samsung will be sticking to contrasting colourways which made the S21’s design memorable. So far, leaks have only shown the white and black versions of the S22 and S22+ which don’t seem to have the eye-popping contrast.

Galaxy S22 Rumours 1
Source: @evleaks

That said, there are minor differences when it comes to materials. The Galaxy S22 series is rumoured to come with glass materials – for the back portion at least. This could be to support the faster wireless fast charging. However, it seems like the S22 will be capping its charging abilities at 25W while its siblings move on to 45W charging technology.

A Note-able Galaxy S22 Ultra… Maybe

However, the Galaxy S22 Ultra seems to be turning the Galaxy S series on its head – just a little. After skipping a year and retiring the popular Note moniker, it seems like Samsung is poised to bring the Note and S series into a single flagship family. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is not only adopting the S-Pen, it’s taken the familiar design cues of the Note.

https://twitter.com/dohyun854/status/1490109153679122432

The rounded, rectangular design of the Galaxy Note family is back in full force. The S22 Ultra is not only wider than its siblings, but it also brings an integrated S-pen slot. This seems to be a natural progression of the S-Pen’s S21 Ultra debut last year. In addition, the Ultra is looking to have a fully flushed camera setup – aside from the camera lenses. It also drops the encasing design of its siblings when it comes to the camera.

Pricier across the board

It seems like the Galaxy S22 won’t only be coming with the latest and greatest technology. It’s also coming with a hefty bump in price – at least in the U.S. The S22 series is rumoured to be a whopping USD$100 (MYR417.99) more than the S21 series. The Galaxy S22 will be starting at USD$900 (MYR3,761.95) while the S22+ starts at USD$1,100 (MYR4,598.12) and the S22 Ultra at USD$1,300 (MYR5,434.10).

However, prices in Europe seem to be remaining the same. We hope this rings true for the prices in Malaysia as well.

1bill announces strategic investment in Accurassi

Multi-million-dollar investment to transform Australia’s energy landscape and unlock the future of global energy retail

MELBOURNE, Australia, Feb. 7, 2022 — One of Australia’s leading financial technology innovators, 1bill Holdings, has announced a more than $2 million investment in visionary B2B Energy Technology SaaS Provider, Accurassi.

The strategic deal is expected to unlock the future of energy retail with market-first technology to accelerate the easy transition to green energy.

1bill CEO Neil Saligrama said there was a thirst in the Australian and global markets for more sustainable energy solutions, which current digital infrastructure including product and billing capabilities cannot service at scale or speed.

"No transition is easy, unless it’s made easy via technology, and that’s what this is about: using technology to simplify energy acquisition and management and provide clarity for consumers to make a smooth transition to sustainable solutions," Mr Saligrama said.

Accurassi CEO Colin Fraser said 1bill’s significant investment would allow them to build the platform of the future.

"The technology we are building will allow energy retailers to diversify and evolve through the innovation of energy plans and billing capabilities," Mr Fraser said.

"It will empower customers to choose what they want, how they pay, and when they pay for it – things like bundled hardware, energy subscriptions and plans customised to an individual’s needs.

"It’s going to make home de-carbonisation accessible to everyone through intelligent, dynamic energy plans, and greener, cheaper, simpler bills."

Mr Saligrama said the investment strategically aligned both companies by combining the strength of 1bill’s market reach with Accurassi’s revolutionary technology, creating compelling value for both companies and their shareholders.

"At 1bill, we’re very focused on adding technology that is unique to the market and relevant to the customer," Mr Saligrama said.

"Accurassi has been at the helm of energy innovation in the market, and their technology gives us a future-focused and cost-friendly solution that enables us to be the market leader."

Accurassi CEO Colin Fraser said the two companies share a vision for a greener planet.

"Such a vision can only be achieved with partners like 1bill who deeply understand and are aligned with our core purpose and culture," Mr Fraser said.

"It’s fortuitous that our two businesses and our skill sets match up perfectly in terms of what we each bring to the table."

Mr Saligrama said the investment was an integral part of the company’s ambitious growth strategy.

"We’re always looking for new opportunities that offer the right synergy and support businesses that are innovative in any space that’s relevant – and that includes global opportunities to grow," Mr Saligrama said.
