Android 12 Based One UI 4.0 is Coming to Samsung Galaxy S21 Devices Near You

There used to be a time when you want to avoid Samsung if you want fast and timely Operating System (OS) upgrades on your Android devices. Android updates in the early days of Samsung’s Android affair was pushed to Samsung devices way later than other manufacturers. At some point, a Samsung device only gets its major update 6 months after the same OS update was made available from Google itself.

Today, it is a different story though. Samsung is consistently topping charts when it comes to device updates. In the world of Android as well, apart from Google, Samsung has the best track record of timely software upgrades on their devices. They also keep their devices updated and supported longer than any Android manufacturer other than Google themselves currently. There is a reason why Samsung remained at the top spot when it comes to the smartphone market.

Android 12 was just released to the wild less than two months ago. Of course, it appears first on Google’s own range of devices. Of course, the new Google Pixel 6 series launched with Android 12 as part of its package. There was also a tonne of devices that had official Android 12 Beta support, if you wanted to try them. Strangely, Samsung was not too much in a hurry to release their own Beta version of the new OS even when others made theirs available near immediately after Google’s announcement of Android 12. There is a good reason, we think.

Samsung was late to the Beta party because they were busy making sure that they can push out the full version of One UI 4.0 based on Android 12 to market as soon as possible. At least we theorised that this is the case. Prove? One UI 4.0 with Android 12 is now rolling out on Samsung Galaxy S21 devices.

Of course, the update starts in the United States (U.S.) first. That also means we, living in Malaysia, will not be getting our Android 12 updates for the Samsung Galaxy S21 devices just yet. It should not take too long for Samsung to start rolling out updates for devices in Malaysia though, so we are expecting something to happen to your Samsung Galaxy S21 devices within the coming two weeks.

If you are not on a Samsung Galaxy S21 device though, you still should not worry too much. We are a little surprised too to find out that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 will only be getting their Android 12 update in December 2021 though, after the Galaxy S21 devices. The Samsung Galaxy S20 series will be getting their Android 12 update in the same month as the foldables. Even the Note 20 series gets their Android 12 treatment in December 2021.

If you are on anything newer than the Samsung Galaxy S9 or Note9 series, you are in luck to get your Android 12 update in January 2022, at least according to the leaked roadmap. That includes your Galaxy S10 and Note10 devices. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S9 and Note9 will not be getting anymore OS upgrades in the coming future.

Nokia X20 – Focusing On What Matters for the Best Smartphone Experience

A lot of times, as users, we look at smartphones through a very narrow lens. We look at their specifications and look up reviews for the latest and greatest. However, over the years, we have seen a shift in focus when it comes to smartphones. While we still have the big flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max, a new class of smartphones has been emerging. One spearheaded by companies like HMD Global who are focusing on experience and software support.

Nokia X20 Advertorial 00002

HMD Global showed us a big shift with the announcement of their new flagship – the Nokia X20. Unlike the Nokia 8.1 or Nokia 9 PureView of year’s past, the Nokia X20 focused on affordability and software. It eschewed the pricey Snapdragon 800 series for a more affordable and equally capable Snapdragon 480 5G. The Snapdragon 480 5G is a capable octa-core processor with speeds of up to 2.0GHz which pack enough performance for an everyday user. Its added 5G capabilities also help futureproof the smartphone with 5G networks being turned on across the world. Paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, HMD Global is packing the Nokia X20 with specifications that are up to the job.

However, that’s only part of the equation! The user experience of any given smartphone is centred on the software. The Nokia X20, like previous Nokia Android devices, comes with near-stock Android. HMD Global opted to not bog down the operating system with needless skins and features which consume RAM and storage. Instead, the experience you get with the Nokia X20 is a pure, unadulterated version of Android. This vanilla approach to Android allows HMD to focus on developing features like their ZEISS camera lens which come with X20.

Nokia X20 Advertorial 00001

The 64-megapixel quad-camera setup on the Nokia X20 is equipped with ZEISS optics. The Nokia X20 utilises these optics to deliver some of the most stunning pictures you can get on a smartphone. HMD Global partners with ZEISS to ensure that each of the lenses used in the camera sensors is up to scratch. Like cameras, lenses in smartphones play a key role in focusing light and what we want to capture. Using poor quality lenses can lead to aberrations and distortions which will result in a horrible picture. However, with technology like ZEISS, you get clear, crisp pictures. The camera of the Nokia X20 also comes with AI-augmented features which allow it to intelligently focus and optimise to get the best picture.

AI isn’t just employed for photography. The Nokia X20 continues to stay true to the promise of having up to 2-days of battery on each charge. HMD Global has imbued the Nokia X20 with AI algorithms that allow the phone to adapt and optimise according to the usage patterns of its user. This allows it to get every millisecond from the 4470mAh battery of the X20. No need to hug walls or carry bulky battery packs and power banks when your phone has your back. Even if you forget to plug in after a day and a half, the Nokia X20 comes with support for Quick Charge 4+ which will allow you to get up to 5 hours of battery life in 15 minutes.

HMD Global MY Nokia Phones
Source: HMD Global

The only piece that is left to complete the experience with the Nokia X20 is good software support. Out of the box, the X20 comes with Android 11. However, thanks to the vanilla approach that HMD Global has taken with the software, you can expect that Android 12 will be making its way to the smartphone. In fact, you can rest assured that you will get the update. The Nokia X20 is guaranteed 3 years of OS updates. This means that the phone will see the update to Android 14! Realise that HMD Global isn’t taking the same approach as others when it comes to promises. They’ve promised 3 years and not 3 iterations. This means that if Android goes from 12 to 17 in that three years, you’ll get it all. In addition, the Nokia X20 is also guaranteed security updates for the same amount of time. It will be getting monthly security bulletins that help secure Android in a timely manner. As a matter of fact, there’s no doubting this with HMD’s current track record of updates. However, HMD isn’t just giving you software updates for 3 years, the warranty of the Nokia X20 lasts for the same 3 years!

Looking at the Nokia X20 makes one think about what truly makes a smartphone worth it. The smartphone isn’t a slouch when it comes to performance but it does bring a lot of quality of life features that are sorely lacking in the smartphone arena. Guaranteed software updates, long battery life, good camera performance and even specification that are up to task might just be the thing that all of us are looking for. In fact, that just might be it – the makings of a truly reliable smartphone; one that you can call your companion for 3 years confidently.

Behavioural research by Xero uncovers barriers to small business technology adoption

Anxiety over short-term risks of change, overconfidence in the safety of the status quo, and choice paralysis are the most common behavioural barriers to small businesses taking up new business technologies

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Nov. 16, 2021 — Simple changes in habits and process could prove more effective than costly educational campaigns in helping small businesses take advantage of digital technology’s benefits, according to behavioural science research conducted by Xero, the global small business platform.

The One step study surveyed more than 4,200 small business owners in six countries (Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the United States, Canada, and Singapore). Carried out in partnership with behavioural science consultancy, Decision Design, the report found that small businesses which readily adopt new technology enjoy on average 120 percent higher revenue. They also reported 106 percent higher productivity than those which repeatedly fail to do so and were 27 percent more likely to wake up excited about their work.

Yet despite technology adoption’s substantial and well-documented benefits, and even after the pandemic drove firms to deploy digital solutions en masse, only one in five small businesses consider themselves as technology adopters – compared to nearly one in three who admit they continually delay investing in new technology.

The research revealed that this ‘adoption gap’ stems from several behavioural barriers – mindsets and perceptions about technology and change – that frequently recurred amongst small businesses all over the world. Small business owners tended to believe that;

  1. their current solutions were good enough even if new technology might help them do better;
  2. they focus on risks and short-term losses when considering change; and
  3. they find themselves freezing up when forced to compare, understand, and choose between numerous technology options

"Our research suggests that for small businesses, the greatest hurdles to harnessing technology’s benefits aren’t a lack of information or choice, but deeper anxiety and concern about how complex and costly the change process might be," said Rachael Powell, Chief Customer Officer, Xero. "Small businesses may know the benefits, but they’re not adopting technology because the idea of doing so feels deeply uncomfortable and even threatening."

The study also found that sole traders – who made up eight in ten respondents – were more likely to struggle with these behavioural barriers to technology adoption than small businesses with larger teams. Compared to businesses with 20-49 people, sole traders were:

  • 29 percent less likely to agree they needed to change their technology in order to grow;
  • 39 percent more likely to feel confused when comparing technology options; and
  • 27 percent less confident in taking a ‘leap of faith’ with new technology due to feelings of uncertainty.

"Sole traders make up the majority of small businesses but also feel pressures and challenges more keenly than firms with more people to share the load," said Powell. "What we’ve found is that giving sole traders too many options, or failing to communicate in a way that’s directly relevant to them, can hinder rather than help them in adopting new technology. The resulting inertia comes at significant cost to their growth and, given their economic significance, to our society as a whole," Powell added.

Based on its results, One step offers several recommendations for how policymakers, advisors, and technology vendors can help small businesses by presenting technology adoption in a more straightforward, less daunting way. These include:

  • Encouraging smaller incremental changes to technology, rather than high-cost, high-risk investments;
  • Celebrating small businesses who’ve benefited from technology adoption as examples that normalise digital change;
  • Quantifying the true gap between current operations and those enhanced by technology; while also
  • Measuring technology’s benefits in a way that’s more relatable to small businesses’ experiences; and
  • Narrowing and simplifying technology choices to minimise decision paralysis.

The report also includes simple handles that small businesses can grasp to help overcome their behavioural barriers including decision matrices, ‘pre-mortem’ evaluations, cost-benefit analyses, and setting aside time for peer learnings. Each activity helps to clarify the true risks and rewards of technology adoption, allowing small business leaders to overcome confusion and uncertainty to make more rational decisions about the different options they may face.

"When we go beyond the surface-level reasons and understand what motivates our decisions, we can then make the right changes to our mindsets and habits for meaningful results," said Powell. "The research we’ve done suggests that we all – policymakers, vendors, and small business leaders – need to rethink how we approach technology adoption in the small business community. It’s also a cause for hope that with a few small, simple adjustments to our practices, we can help our small businesses achieve the full potential that digital technology offers them."

Methodology
Xero partnered with behavioural science firm Decision Design to complete an anonymous and unbranded, nationally representative market study among n=4,211 small businesses across Australia (n=1,212), New Zealand (n=170), the United Kingdom (n=1,162), the United States (n=1,165), Canada (n=341) and Singapore (n=161).  This behavioural science-led study measured perceptions, beliefs, behaviours and behavioural barriers related to technology and technology adoption.  Data collection by Decision Design was conducted between 12 – 26 July 2021 and study respondents are all small business decision makers for businesses with less than 50 employees (less than 100 employees in the United States).

[Video] Acer Swift X Review – Sounds Like an Entry-Level Gaming Laptop

The Acer Swift X is an MYR 4,999 thin-and-light laptop that packs a lot of power. It gets a gaming and creator grade AMD Ryzen 7 5800U CPU. On top of that, and 16GB of RAM, is a very potent NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti to boot. All of that seems like a recipe for something special.

We find that the AMD powered Swift notebook PC to be an intriguing one. Acer sells this laptop as the ideal content creation laptop for those are starting up in content creation but needs something easily portable as well.

It is sort of a spiritual successor to the Acer Swift 3X that was launched also a few months ago. The Acer Swift X shares the same build platform as the Acer Swift 3X though, which also means that it shares the same design quirks we pointed out in the Acer Swift 3X. It is a more powerful platform comparatively though.

Is this Swift X with AMD’s powerful Ryzen 7 5800U worth MYR 4,999? With the same quirks, would it be a worthy laptop of the Swift name? Should you get it as a content creator? We find out in our review of the Acer Swift X.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Lands in Malaysia for MYR 9,499

A few months ago, Samsung launched this behemoth of a thing. It was made for gamers, and it was a gaming peripheral that the ultimate gamer would need. If anyone would own one, it is the ultimate statement piece. That was July 2021.

They call it the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 gaming monitor and it looked glorious. While it was more expensive than the older Odyssey G9 that it replaced, the improvements perhaps more than justifies its price tag. Not that you get a bigger display or anything, you just get a much better package than before.

The headline figures say it all. Mini LED, dual QHD 1440p resolution at 49 inches (32:9) with 12-bit colours, HDR2000 at 2000nits and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and 240Hz. No matter how you look at it, it just sounds majestic. It also sounds like an awfully expensive television set, not a gaming monitor.

We assure you that we are talking about a gaming monitor though. The 49-inch stretches to an ultrawide aspect ratio of 32:9. It is also compatible with NVIDIA’s G-Sync, and AMD’s FreeSync Premium to take advantage of anything you already have. Unfortunately, your PlayStation and Xbox will not be able to fill up the display, this is a PC only territory. It also has something Samsung calls ‘CoreSync’ lighting. The RGB lighting at the back lights up according to the dominant colour of your display to further transport and immerse you in your games.

Of course, to look the part, it has to work the part. That is why the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9’s 49-inch Mini LED panel’s feed is fed by HDMI 2.1. At 2,048 dimming zones, you are getting a gaming and viewing experience like no other; you might as well live in the game world. It reacts quickly too at 1ms GtG response time. When Samsung says this is the ultimate gaming display, we believe it.

  • ODYSSEY NEO G9 MAS 1
  • ODYSSEY NEO G9 MAS 2
  • ODYSSEY NEO G9 MAS 3

Unfortunately, at the time of launch, Malaysia did not get to see the Odyssey Neo G9. The hope that it would arrive sooner was bleak due to the major stock shortage Samsung faced. Halted and delayed productions of course played a part in the whole thing too.

Now though, you do not need to just dream of the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, you can officially own it in Malaysia. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is now available in Samsung Official Stores and showrooms across the nation. Of course, you can get them from Samsung’s official retailers and resellers as well. How much? It will set you back MYR 9,499. We predicted that this would set you back a little over MYR 1,000 above its official asking price though. in that case, all in all, that is not a bad asking price, if you have the money.

OPPO A95 First Look & Hands-On

The is set to take center stage with its true midrange flagship the #OPPOA95. We’re taking a first look at the #Snapdragon662 touting smartphone! It comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It’s got a formidable AMOLED display with an FHD+ resolution. The smartphone also comes equipped with a triple camera array with a 64-megapixel main sensor.

It will be available for pre-order really soon and you’ll be entitled to a whole bunch of freebies and even get an Enco Buds for MYR1! More details coming with the release of the smartphone!

GOOVIS Defines All-New Market Segment for Experiencing Multimedia

The brand of optical experts offers a new option for glasses wearers who want to enjoy immersive, glasses-free and cinema-like experience at home

HONG KONG, Nov. 12, 2021 — GOOVIS, the product brand of NED Optics, a technical leading company in the XR Head-Mounted Display (HMD) field, has created a new segment of visual devices. Different from many AR/VR HMDs on the market, GOOVIS HMDs are a series of portable personal cinema products that allow users to watch and enjoy videos without damaging their eyes or experiencing any dizziness. Supported by its patented optical technologies, GOOVIS HMDs not only provide an immersive, glasses-free and cinema-like experience for movie viewers and game players, but are also applicable for different industrial settings that require simulated training or remote control.

(Visit http://www.goovislife.com/ to explore more.)

Experts in near-eye displays, the team behind GOOVIS is committed to producing premium quality products. This commitment extends to GOOVIS HMDs. Preventing short-sightedness, dizziness, or eye damage, the HMD features an ultra-high-definition screen – 2 x 0.71" Sony AMOLED micro-display, with only 1.5% distortion, 1920×1080 x2 resolution, and PPI 3147. The device ensures the highest clarity with a 42 PPD (pixel per degree), which is 100% higher than many other VR devices on the market.

Equipped with the company’s optical technology that supports 300 degrees for hyperopia and 800 degrees for myopia, the HMD allows users to easily adjust the device for enjoying a clear and 3D stereoscopic viewing experience without glasses and with less strain on the eyes. The diopter adjustment range could be adjusted individually for the left or right eye with independent controls. In addition, the device itself is lightweight (only 200g), portable, and comfortable to wear, marking it a better choice for clear and high-quality XR multimedia experiences at home or on the go.
