Wear OS Gets New GBoard -Fresher, Faster, Better

Google’s I/O is just around the corner and there are plenty of things to look forward to in Google I/O. One of them is improvements and updates to Wear OS. If you do not know what Wear OS is, it is basically Google’s perception of what a wearable interface should look like. The smartwatch OS can be found on plenty of smartwatches you can find on the market that is not a HUAWEI, or Samsung, or Fitbit, or Apple. In Malaysia, the most popular Wear OS smartwatch currently are still from Fossil.

While it is considered one of the major smartwatch interfaces you can find in the current market, contents for Wear OS can be limited. Of course, the app ecosystem for Wear OS is still growing and there are still room for improvements for the wearables that are equipped with Wear OS. Google also hardly updates or releases new apps on their own Wear OS, weirdly enough. Until now that is, with a certain GBoard.

GBoard is a keyboard, yes. In fact, it is one of the most popular and most loved keyboards in the world of Android. Some of the best and most popular Android smartphone sports GBoard as their default keyboard, that is how good it is. Wear OS also sports Google’s own default keyboard on the platform that has not been updated until now.

Previously known as Google Keyboard, GBoard gets a new update that borderlines a makeover of the app on Wear OS. The new Wear OS still retains the full QWERTY layout but with a more streamlined and cleaner design compared to the clunky Google Keyboard of old. Of course, GBoard also retains gestures and voice input functions. They are much easier to access now though.

Source: Google

The new GBoard also still has word suggestions, except that it is now scrollable instead of a drop-down menu. That makes word suggestion a lot more accessible and much more intuitive to work with. The word suggestion bar is also your quick access to input methods now. To allow for a bit more space and accessibility on the keyboard, the language toggle is now moved to the spacebar instead of a dedicated language button.

The update for Gboard for WearOS should be a huge welcome for the platform and its users. The platform, since its 2.0 release five years ago, have stagnated a little. Its last update was a minor update to version 2.23 with minute changes to improve its connectivity support and battery life mostly. Wear OS is expected to receive a major update in the upcoming Google I/O.

Ericsson and Samsung sign global patent license agreement

– Agreement includes global patent cross license of cellular technologies, including 5G

– Settlement ends all ongoing patent related legal disputes between the parties

– In the second quarter 2021, IPR licensing revenues are expected to be SEK 2.0 b. to 2.5 b.

STOCKHOLM, May 7, 2021 — Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Samsung have reached a multi-year agreement on global patent licenses between the two companies, including patents relating to all cellular technologies. The cross-license agreement covers sales of network infrastructure and handsets from January 1, 2021.

Furthermore, Ericsson and Samsung have agreed on technology cooperation projects to advance the mobile industry in open standardization and create valuable solutions for consumers and enterprises.

This settlement ends complaints filed by both companies before the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) as well as the ongoing lawsuits in several countries and confirms the value of the strong patent portfolios of both companies. The details of the agreement are confidential and will not be disclosed.

Ericsson’s IPR licensing revenues continue to be affected by several factors, mainly expired patent license agreements pending renewal, geopolitical impact on the handset market, technology shift from 4G to 5G, and possible currency effects going forward. In the second quarter 2021, IPR licensing revenues, including the new agreement covering sales from January 1, 2021, are expected to be SEK 2.0 b to 2.5 b.

Christina Petersson, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson says: "We are delighted to sign a mutually beneficial agreement with Samsung. This important deal confirms the value of our patent portfolio and further illustrates Ericsson’s commitment to FRAND principles."

Over several decades, Ericsson has made significant investments in R&D and in developing global mobile standards and is committed to licensing its standard-essential patents on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms for the benefit of consumers and enterprises everywhere. The FRAND system allows access to technology and intellectual property, developed by inventors like Ericsson, and also rewards those inventors for their major up-front investment in R&D in each mobile generation.

The value of Ericsson’s IP portfolio extends to more than 57,000 granted patents and is strengthened by annual investment in R&D of approx. SEK 40 b. With a leading global position in 5G, the company is confident of growing its IPR revenues long term, thereby further maximizing the value of the overall patent portfolio.

JIS Service Learning Supports Communities in Need

Students of Jakarta Intercultural School engage in community outreach that makes a difference

JAKARTA, Indonesia, May 7, 2021 — Seventeen-year-old Sangwook is on a mission to help narrow the digital divide in Indonesia. As a 21st-Century learner whose studies greatly depend on digital technology, he recognizes that computers are "like treasure boxes which are full of educational potential," and firmly believes that equal access to computers and the internet can make all the difference in a child’s education.

Sangwook, a senior student of Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) engages in community outreach that makes a difference.
Sangwook, a senior student of Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) engages in community outreach that makes a difference.

So, with the help and expert guidance of the Service-Learning Program at Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS), where he is currently a Junior, Sangwook and members of his Plugged-IN club are working hard to make technology fun and accessible for everyone — especially young learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. They teach twice-weekly lessons to elementary school students who get hands-on experience learning about various tech-related topics.

"Each week had a specific theme and at least one interactive activity," Sangwook explained with enthusiasm. "One example is a QR code scavenger hunt: Students and club members worked in teams to complete various technology-related challenges around campus by scanning QR codes. Lots of running around and lots of energy."

Plugged-IN is one of the 35 student-led clubs at JIS High School that takes part in collaborative community engagement as part of the school’s Service Learning Program. Essentially, these clubs operate like a network of non-profit organizations that aim to respond to an authentic need of the community, explained JIS Service Learning Coordinator Jodi Berry.

"Service learning offers students opportunities to lead, collaborate and develop philanthropic values that lead to civil participation," she said. "With guidance from the JIS High School Service Council and faculty advisors, students work together to launch campaigns, fundraisers and larger initiatives and projects that support our community partners in need."

Like Sangwook, JIS Grade 12 student Nelson saw the importance of addressing the needs of vulnerable, underprivileged children. To help make a difference, he joined not one, but two service learning clubs: House of Hope, which engages with children from the Panti Akhiruz Zaman orphanage through games, sporting activities and English and math lessons; as well as the Conquer Cancer Club, which visits children struggling with cancer and entertains them with arts and crafts lessons.

"Service learning allows students to build a good moral character. I believe that an important element of education is to be able to engage with students and people in the community around us," he said. "Not only have service projects given me the skills to work together and collaborate with people, but they have also taught me to be more empathetic and caring to those less privileged than myself."

But then the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. With health restrictions in place from the government and students moving to online learning, it became impossible for Nelson and other service learners to engage directly with the people they’ve worked so hard to help. JIS service learning clubs found themselves having to rethink and redesign their entire approach to community outreach.

For Sangwook and Plugged-IN, that meant shifting their lessons to Zoom — which only emphasized the very issue they were trying to address.

"The pandemic exacerbated and exposed the issue of the digital divide in Indonesia. We learned that many students are forced to stay home with no access to technology and unable to attend online school during lockdown," he said. "Therefore, our priority now is to help them go through these difficult times. I think that our core motivation has always been the same; it comes from the belief that technology can enrich — or possibly change — one’s life."

In addition to teaching online lessons, the Plugged-IN club has spent the past year organizing donation which drives to collect secondhand gadgets. These are then channeled to Indonesian state-school students who have been struggling to participate in virtual classes during the pandemic because their families can’t afford the necessary technology.

"We have donated almost 100 devices, including smartphones, desktop computers, laptops and iPads. The process has been a long one; we asked people and companies around us for devices, collected them, repaired them and put them into packages along with accessories, masks and instructions," Sangwook explained.

Nelson, meanwhile, has been dedicated to helping both House of Hope and Conquer Cancer Club put together and deliver care packages — filled with materials for various activities, essential food items, hygiene kits — to the children he once met with regularly. But he wanted to do more. He wanted to reach out and help as many children as possible using his strengths and what he believes is the key to a better future for them: education.

He used his free time to write an English-Indonesian workbook with illustrations and engaging activities titled Let’s Learn Basic English With Billy, which has been published and is currently for sale. For every book he sells, he donates a copy to a local school or orphanage.

"The book teaches Indonesian children the basics of English literacy, including basic vocabulary, sentence structure, forming questions and grammar. Through this book, I hope to help Indonesian children acquire English literacy at a young age and provide them with the keys to the world," Nelson said.

"Additionally, I also led a collaboration project with seven of the service clubs at JIS, where each club created an English lesson video that paired with a lesson taught in the book. These videos are intended to complement the book’s lessons."

Service learning at JIS demonstrates several "competencies" in 21st-Century Education, such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication, which Berry said were needed to overcome the urgent issues we face today. JIS, however, considers "compassion" as another core competency.

"We’re at a time when the biggest world problems cannot be solved alone. We have to be able to work together to create a better world for all," she said. "Above all, service learning is an approach to develop those competencies, to complement what students are learning inside the classroom with experiences and opportunities outside the classroom."

Sacramento Kings and Bigtincan Launch Strategic Partnership

Agreement Provides Kings Access to Innovative Sales Enablement Technology —

SACRAMENTO, Calif. and WALTHAM, Mass., May 7, 2021 Today, the Sacramento Kings and Bigtincan® (ASX:BTH), the global leader in sales enablement automation, announced they have entered into a 3-year strategic partnership. The two leaders in technology innovation are building upon their relationship by way of joint market education campaigns, including "Masters of Efficiency," which correlates NBA advanced statistics with Bigtincan’s sales efficiency tools and AI-driven approach.

"The Kings are committed to providing an exceptional fan experience through the use of innovative technology and partnerships," said Sacramento Kings President of Business Operations John Rinehart. "For the past six years, Bigtincan’s Engagement Hub based on ClearSlide has been a game-changer for multiple sales arms of the Kings by enabling an efficient, effective and engaging sales process."

"We are excited to partner with NBA’s technology leader to showcase how innovation enhances the fan experience starting with prospective buyers," said Bigtincan Co-founder David Keane. Bigtincan is recognized for their leading AI-powered sales enablement automation platform that unifies and automates sales, marketing, and customer service tasks to empower teams to learn faster, sell more and be more productive. Their Engagement Hub, based on ClearSlide, helps salespeople focus on the most promising leads, saves time during the sales cycle, and improves coaching. The result is an efficient digital fan buying experience – removing uncertainty and giving the buyer confidence that they understand their seat accommodations and view. This aspect was crucial when moving into state-of-the-art Golden 1 Center so fans could visualize their new experience within an (at the time) unfinished arena.

Bigtincan content insights provide a complete picture of buyer engagement and interests in an easy dashboard that allows data to guide the most effective sales content strategy. The analytics provided guide marketers to invest in developing content that is actually being used and delivering the most ROI. The partnership allows Bigtincan and the Kings to build next generation intelligent data models that reveal new insights into buyer behavior and content effectiveness – enabling the best experience for every Kings fan and Bigtincan customer.

The Kings are committed to using technology to enhance the fan experience. In February, in collaboration with Intel Sports, the team announced the launch of Intel® True View at Golden 1 Center, providing fans access to unique video content, including 360-degree highlights and unbounded perspectives of basketball action. In January, the team became the first NBA team to adopt Mixhalo technology to deliver pristine, high-quality audio in real-time to attendees at sporting events and concerts. In November, the Kings announced the first-ever official professional sports team Discord server enabling fans to gather online to share in community, interact and expand access to exclusive experiences. For their tech-first mindset, the organization has been named the "Most Innovative Company in Sports" by Fast Company and the "Most Tech-Savvy Team" by SportTechie.

Skybox Security Wins Best Vulnerability Management Solution

SC Awards honor the best in U.S. cybersecurity

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 6, 2021 — Skybox Security, a global leader in security posture management, today announced it won Best Vulnerability Management Solution at the 2021 SC Awards. Honoring the best in U.S. cybersecurity, the annual SC Media Awards recognize the products and companies that are forging the industry’s future and enabling organizations to protect their most critical assets.

Skybox Security wins Best Vulnerability Management Solution.
Skybox Security wins Best Vulnerability Management Solution.

"This award recognizes that Skybox stands alone as the only vulnerability and threat management solution that prioritizes vulnerabilities based on a combination of asset importance, CVSS score, exploitability, and advanced exposure analysis. We uniquely calculate exposure by conducting attack simulation across hybrid networks," said Gidi Cohen, CEO and founder, Skybox Security. "Fortune 1000 customers choose Skybox because we increase the accuracy of their vulnerability assessments, reduce mean time to remediation, and measure cyber exposure on a continuous basis."

Pioneering a new approach to vulnerability management

A new threat landscape requires a new approach to security posture management. Skybox Security evolved its platform to secure customers’ accelerated digital transformation initiatives such as cloud migration and IT/OT convergence. This year, Skybox delivered the world’s most advanced exposure analysis, which was made possible through its unique ability to model hybrid networks.

"Skybox offers a comprehensive three-dimensional digital model of the enterprise which simulates real-world attacks," said Steve Zurier, security journalist at SC Media. "With data collected from dozens of sources and its robust threat intelligence feed, Skybox runs as a true risk platform that automates workflow from discovery to targeted action, delivering accurate and customizable risk scores to focus teams on critical vulnerabilities, exploitable assets and the most effective remediation options."

Integrating with over 150 networking, security, cloud, and IT management solutions, the Vulnerability and Threat Management Solution automatically maps and visualizes the attack surface to reduce cybersecurity exposure continuously. Customers also receive a verified and up-to-the-minute contextualized threat intelligence in one consolidated source from the Skybox Research Lab.

"The product normalizes data from different vendors for easy analysis, examining it in the context of the attack surface, and automates assessment, prioritization, remediation planning and monitoring," added Zurier. "It matches vulnerabilities to network exposures, threats and potential business impacts of an exploit, while focusing resources on imminent threats. And it measures, tracks and demonstrates risk levels over time, while delivering visual, abstracted views of the attack surface to easily convey security status across teams and up the management chain."

Recognized as the gold standard of cybersecurity excellence

Now in its 25th year, 2021’s SC Awards were the most competitive yet. Winners of the Trust Award were chosen by a distinguished group of leading IT security professionals. Entrants were narrowed down to a select group of finalists before undergoing a rigorous final judging process to determine the winner of each category.

"Distinct challenges that emerged during the last year resulted in a diverse range of demands from the customer community. A pandemic drove employees home en masse; supply chain attacks left government agencies and businesses reeling; cybercriminals and enemy nation states banked on security gaps during unprecedented times, targeting home networks, healthcare organizations, and retailers, among many other organizations," said Jill Aitoro, editor in chief of SC Media. "Winners of our Trust Awards demonstrated remarkable resiliency, adapting to meet evolving requirements of customers."

The SC Awards are recognized throughout the security industry as the gold standard of excellence in cybersecurity. For more information and a detailed list of categories, finalists and winners, please visit https://scawardsus.com/.

The skateboard inspired accents continue on the main body of the laptop with a grey and black color and customised keycaps that bring more of Nyjah’s signature style.

Like previous collaborations, the design flair isn’t just on the ROG Strix SCAR itself. The Nyjah-ROG collaboration starts from the packaging with an imposing skull and backed by two skateboards – Nyjah’s logo signature – with the letters R-O-G embossed across it. The taglines for both ROG and Nyjah are emblazoned on the packaging as well across the skull. These accents are only visible under UV light.

The ROG Strix SCAR 17 was the centrepiece of this collaboration. The new Strix SCAR 17 comes with an AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor which is complemented by the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics processor. It also has a Full HD IPS display with a 360Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time – a first in a gaming laptop. The new hub includes 4G LTE, in addition to Wi-Fi connectivity, and an extended battery backup to ensure the system is always connected. This offers highly secure enhanced video verification and unlimited video storage with an extended battery life of up to five years.

The highlight of the platform comprises the S5 Family of multi-functional detectors, featuring a magnetic door/window sensor, a motion sensor with multi-zone spherical lenses for enhanced coverage, a curtain sensor, and a multi-function button that can be programmed to perform a variety of security and smart home actions. Upgraded cloud capabilities provide unprecedented stability and flexibility for providers, including an interactive and fully customizable smartphone app and administration center, with enhanced reporting and analytics capabilities, enabling them to customize and deploy solutions tailored to customer needs.

"Securitas Direct Switzerland has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Essence Group, our valued partner that has played an integral role in us becoming Switzerland’s leading security solutions provider," said Christian Chenaux, CEO Securitas Direct Switzerland. Google I/O 2021 Full Schedule is Out – What to Expect from Google in 2021

Google’s I/O even is set to happen on the 18th of May 2021 onward (19th May 2021, following Malaysia time). Usually also, Google’s I/O is where Google announces their latest and greatest Android version. We can safely assume that the latest update to Android (Android 12) will be announced in Google I/O with Beta version rolling out immediately after.

According to their three-day conference calendar too, a new Android update is definitely on the cards with all the talk about “What’s new in Android”, and “What’s new in Material Design” talks. But Google I/O is more than just Android.  This year it really seems like Google’s biggest one yet.

According to the calendar also there seems to be a new Chrome OS lined-up for announcement with its own keynote. There is also a new update to Google Assistant in Google I/O. Smart homes ecosystem is getting some attention this year too at Google I/O with its own keynote segment. Google Play and Google Pay also get some new updates this year from Google I/O.

Oddly enough though there are no mentions of Wear OS within the schedule. While that also means that there should not be any update to Wear OS for the time being, do not discount Wear OS to be updated later in the year. Google’s acquisition of Fitbit will also not be addressed in Google I/O 2021, in this case. The Fitbit acquisition could also mean a new hardware announcement from Google in the wearable space though.

There are also numerous rumours surrounding Google’s upcoming or speculated Pixel device, the Pixel 5a. Alongside that, Google is also supposed to be announcing their new TWS earbuds in the conference. According to the schedule, there seems to be no acknowledgement on the hardware end of things. Most of the time though, hardware announcements are made in the first keynote of Google’s I/O. We are still expecting some new hardware from Google from Google I/O though. If you are too, keep your eyes peeled on Google’s I/O 2021.
