Xiaomi in the past year has been making headlines afer headlines, we suspect also that it is probably the most talked about electronic manufacturing brand throughout the world. Ironic, given that its official reach is only mostly in its home market, China and a few other Asian markets including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. There is the growing reach of Xiaomi in India too but none of their devices made it to the Western regions like Europe and Americas, officially anyway. We are convinced also that China will conquer the world through Xiaomi.
Way earlier in Xiaomi’s gameplan, the idea was to introduce cheap smartphones to the masses; cheap but of high-end quality and finish. Everyone was convinced that Xiaomi will be nothing more than another smartphone and tablet manufacturer when it reaches out to the Southeast Asian market. In its home market, China however things have taken a much bigger step as they have actually ventured into making smart televisions, wearables, and smart home appliances. Some of these products even made it out to the other asian markets that it expands to. Of course their biggest and most successful market, as we have learned recently is still its home market in China. With all these venturing into other sort of electronics it did not come as much of a surprise (to us anyway) when Xiaomi seems to have plans that it was going to make laptops for the masses starting next year.
The PC industry is looking at a decline currently and the rise of smartphones and tablet is to be blamed for that decline. The highest end tablets and smartphones these days can tackle jobs that an entry level notebook can and some more. So it does seem irrational for a wildly successful manufacturer of mobile gadgets to jump into a dying market. However though, currently nothing can replace the productive ability of full sized keyboard attached to a larger screen and a slew of full-sized ports.
This is why Xiaomi plans to introduce its first notebook in the 2nd Quarter of 2016. It is even rumoured that Xiaomi is almost ready with a working unit to be introduced in that time frame. It is also believed, from reports that this 12.5 to 13.3-inch displayed notebook will sport Linux OS and that Xiaomi will encase the whole electronic parts with metal. It is also expected to be Apple Macbook Air-esque ultra-portable type of notebook. Despite that we expect that it would cost a fraction of its competition. We do believe though that Xiaomi may offer a Chrome OS alternative too or possibly a Windows alternative to the notebook in when it is released, or not too long after its release.
