U Mobile has quickly become one of the largest telecommunications companies in Malaysia. Initially starting off as an MVNO in 2007 while they began roling out their own infrastructure, U mobile is set to grow even more in the near future.
As part of their expansion, the company has introduced a new Chief Information Officer (CIO), Neil Tomkinson. Tomkinson joins U Mobile from MTN Next!, a South Africa based multinational telecoms company which operates in over 22 countries with a turnover of USD$14 billion. Tomkinson oversaw the development and implementation of the MTN group’s global back office strategy. He will take over from Tan Chen Sen who served as the CIO of U Mobile for the past 5 years.
In addition to appointing a new CIO, the company also adds Woon Ooi Yuen to its senior management team as the Deputy Chief Technology Officer. The addition of Woon to the senior management team aligns with the networks current efforts to create a more robust networking backbone as well as the increased spectrum allocation and ongoing 3G RAN share exit. Woon brings with him two decades of related experience; having worked with companies such as Total Access Communication (Dtac) in Thailand, DigiTelecommunications in Malaysia and Ericsson, Malaysia. In his new role, Woon will be working closely with current Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Too Tian Jen, in overseeing the rollout of U Mobile’s robust expansion strategy.
