Continuous 5G Evolution for Building an Engine of All-Industry Digitalization — Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless

SHANGHAI, Feb. 23, 2021 — At the 5G Advanced Summit hosted by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) during Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2021, Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless, delivered a keynote speech titled "Continuous 5G Evolution for Building an Engine of All-Industry Digitalization". In his speech, Dr. Tong emphasized that 5G must continuously evolve to build an engine of all-industry digitalization so as to satisfy the fast-growing consumer connections and diverse industrial applications.

5G Evolution Speech @ MWC 2021 by Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless
5G Evolution Speech @ MWC 2021 by Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless

5G development accelerates, driving 5G networks to improve performance

A new communication technology generally dominates for a decade, evolving to provide stronger capabilities, before being superseded by the next generation. In the past year, 5G has been evolving at a faster rate, showing its massive potential. The continuous improvement of experience in customer connections and enrichment of Internet of Things (IoT) services raise the requirements on connection capabilities. "The ever-increasing demand for wireless connections is the fundamental driving force to continuously advance mobile technologies," said Dr. Tong.

Therefore, 5G must constantly improve its capabilities. Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services are driving a significant upsurge in data demand, requiring 5G networks to increase capacity to guarantee premium experience. With the introduction of reduced capability (REDCAP), massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) services will be available on more terminals to fulfill the massive diverse IoT requirements. Ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services require networks to reduce transmission latency and provide latency-guaranteed connection services so as to meet the high-quality connection requirements of remote and programmable logic controller (PLC) control.

5G must expand its boundary of capabilities to open up a new space of business

As new applications keep emerging in the market, the three use cases originally defined in 5G need enhancement to meet diverse IoT service requirements. The boundary of 5G capabilities must be expanded to open up a new space of business.

Immersive interaction services are rapidly developing. 5G AR/VR has enabled superior virtual experience. With the rise of lightweight XR devices, 5G XR will also become a reality. This requires 5G to be further enhanced to deliver premium immersive experiences. 5G networks will be required to increase its average speed from 120 Mbps to 2 Gbps as high definition improves from 4K to 16K. To ensure real-time interaction in the virtual world, 5G must also further reduce transmission latency from the current 20 ms to 5 ms.

Uplink-centric networks are accelerating industrial digitalization. Currently, 5G applications are growing at an unprecedented rate, raising the requirements on uplink speeds. Various consumer AR/XR services require high-definition images and videos to be sent from local devices to clouds for further rendering. Remote control and machine vision in industrial applications also require real-time transfer of 4K and 8K videos. This will lead to a considerable increase in the proportion of uplink traffic over 5G networks to above 40%. To deal with such a huge amount of uplink traffic, 5G uplink capabilities must be improved by at least 10 times.

In addition, 5G must provide sensing capabilities to empower remote control, vehicle-road synergy, unmanned transportation, and smart logistics. For example, by introducing cellular Massive MIMO’s beam sweeping to sensing technologies, both sensing and communication, and even indoor high-precision positioning services, can be implemented through wireless technologies.

5.5G will become an engine of all-industry digitalization

Based on its abundant practices while helping realize the prospects in the mobile industry, Huawei has proposed 5.5G to contribute to exploring new applications, including uplink centric broadband communication (UCBC), real-time broadband communication (RTBC), and harmonized communication and sensing (HCS), with the aim to build an engine of all-industry digitalization.

"Both technology and business are essential to stimulate and promote the development of an industry. The mobile industry, the world’s largest wireless connection market, reaches trillions of US dollars every year," said Dr. Tong. "The accelerating integration of 5G with various industries will create a new market space worth more than US$10 trillion." Due to the lack of collaboration between the connection technologies of industrial services, the applications are often limited to just a single or several applications, far from a scaled effect. As a result, the market is worth just billions of US dollars. The continuous evolution of 5G will improve network capabilities and expand service scenarios, adding extra support for achieving the integration while reducing the cost of connections. This will help unleash the potential business opportunities worth over US$100 billion in the IoT industry.

"The innovation of technologies and applications will open up infinite possibilities for 5G evolution in the next decade," Dr. Tong concluded. "The wireless communications industry cannot achieve success without unified standards and industrial collaboration. Together, we should define 5G evolution and promote industrial collaboration to accelerate the maturity of technology and build a sustainable future with 5G."

Health and social care to gain the most from 5G productivity and efficiency gains, which will add US$1.3trillion to global GDP by 2030

New analysis of 5G – the next generation of mobile connectivity – estimates the impact of new and existing applications.

Over half the global economic impact (US$530bn) will be driven by the transformation of health and social care within the next ten years; a quarter by smart utilities driving savings in energy, water and waste management.

Large manufacturing-based economies are likely to gain the most, including the United States (USA), China and Japan, but gains are projected globally as 5G integrates as a critical part of societal infrastructure.

Transparency is critical to building trust with consumers and regulators 5G’s application.

LONDON, Feb. 8, 2021 — Productivity and efficiency gains enabled by 5G’s application will drive business, skills and service change worth US$1.3 trillion to global GDP by 2030.

In Powering Your Tomorrow, PwC quantifies for the first time, the economic impact of new and existing uses of 5G in utilities, health and social care, consumer, media, and financial services across eight economies with advanced rollout: Australia, China, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, USA and the United Kingdom (UK).

More than a faster version of mobile connectivity on 4G, 5G’s speed, reliability, reduced energy usage and massive connectivity will be transformative for businesses and wider society, enabling ubiquitous access to super fast broadband. Used in combination with investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT), 5G can be used as a platform to enable business and society to realise the full benefits of emerging technology advances.

Economic gains are projected across all economies assessed in the study, as 5G offers the potential to rethink business models, skills, products and services, with the gains accelerating beginning in 2025 as 5G-enabled applications become more widespread

Based on the study, the USA (US$484bn), China (US$220bn) and Japan (US$76bn) will experience the largest uplift as a result of 5G technology applications, due to the size of their economies and strong modern industrial production sectors.

At a regional level Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) is expected to benefit the most from manufacturing applications of 5G, due to the size of the manufacturing sectors. It demonstrates the potential for regional competitive advantage through approaches to the adoption and regulation of the technology.

Wilson Chow, Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications Industry Leader, PwC China, comments:
"These numbers quantify impact, but perhaps more important, our study reflects the value of 5G – new levels of connectivity and collaboration mean companies will be able to see, do and achieve more. It will open up new opportunities for growth and change as organisations rethink and reconfigure the way they operate in the post-pandemic world.

"With the pandemic accelerating digitalisation across all sectors, 5G will act as a further catalyst. It will emerge in this decade as a fundamental piece of our societal infrastructure and as a platform for driving the competitiveness of national economies, new business models, skills and industries."

Achieving better, faster outcomes in health and social care

Over half the global economic impact (US$530bn) will be driven by the transformation of health and social care experience for patients, providers and medical staff within the next ten years.

While the acceleration of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic provided a glimpse of the future of healthcare, remote care is just one area in which 5G can enable both better health outcomes and cost savings.

5G’s applications include remote monitoring and consultations, real time in-hospital data sharing, improved doctor-patient communications and automation in hospitals to reduce health care costs.

Regional & Sector impacts

At a sector level, impacts vary for individual economies. The USA and Australia are projected to gain the most from financial services applications: India from smart utilities; China and Germany in manufacturing.  Other industries analysed in the study show the significant potential of new and existing applications over the next decade, driving changes in skills, jobs, consumer products and regulation:

  • Manufacturing and heavy industry applications include: monitoring and reducing defects, increased autonomous vehicle use (US$134bn)
  • Financial services applications including reducing fraud and improving customer experiences (US$86bn)

Wilson Chow comments:
"5G is more than mobile connectivity. It puts a new lens on advancing productivity and rethinking entire business models for the future. Given the scale of potential and its impacts, every organisation will need a plan for 5G’s implementation within five years across technology and business strategies to maximise opportunities and prepare for how they integrate their technology and business strategies, and engage with customers, supply chain and regulators."

Policy & Trust
The study highlights that the reach of 5G’s technology potential will require businesses and government to consider new approaches to regulatory and consumer engagement – focusing on how the technology is used.

Wilson Chow comments:
"With any technology, policy engagement, transparency and public trust are critical factors. Whether it’s considering the use of self driving vehicles or telemedicine, how data is managed, infrastructure deployed, or how different sectors collaborate, business and government need to shit from focusing on regulating a technology, to promoting transparency in 5G’s application, building and sustaining public trust in its use and potential."

Palma Ceia SemiDesign Announces PCS1100 Wi-Fi 6E 4×4:4 Transceiver

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 28, 2021 — Palma Ceia SemiDesign, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in wireless connectivity solutions, today announced the PCS1100, a Wi-Fi 6E 4×4 transceiver. The PCS1100 is the first chip announced as part of Palma Ceia’s family of Wi-Fi 6 products which support the growing deployment of Wi-Fi 6 networks, and it will provide essential platform technology for a series of upcoming Wi-Fi 6E chipsets.

The PCS1100 supports up to four spatial streams and can operate in the newly allocated 6 GHz spectrum (5.925–7.125 GHz) for Wi-Fi devices, in addition to the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The transceiver supports dual-concurrent operation, allowing simultaneous operation on two frequency bands.

The PC1100 operates as the RF radio part of a wireless system enabling the operation of a Wi-Fi 6 AP-Access Point or STA-Station. It can interface with a host system-level ASSP or ASIC supporting Wi-Fi 6 MAC and baseband digital operation. It is also the ideal companion chip to premium-tier access point architectures.

Designers who integrate the AP or STA Wi-Fi 6 digital modem functionality on their system-level ASIC or ASSP chip can use the PCS1100 as the RF companion chip supporting the radio operation of Wi-Fi 6. This reduces the risk of RF integration and allows use of advanced process nodes with the highest logic gate density.

"As system-level chips grow in functionality to support advanced AI applications that require Wi-Fi connectivity, they must use advanced process nodes to minimize the chip area, and so using an external RF chip reduces the risk of low yield resulting from failure of an integrated RF radio," said Chief Technology Officer Robert Young of Palma Ceia. "The PCS1100 benefits from the experience and expertise of our RF team, and I expect to see those skills reflected in our subsequent products."

Designers who integrate STA modem functionality can use 1×1, 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4 operational configurations, with each additional incremental configuration providing more data throughput. In each configuration, the radio can operate at 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz, or simultaneously on two frequency bands subject to a maximum of four spatial streams. 5G and Wi-Fi 6 to Disrupt Communication Protocols of Building Automation Systems

Emerging wireless technologies and ‘Everything over IP’ approach will have a major impact on the market, finds Frost & Sullivan

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 10, 2020 — Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, Advancements in Communication Protocols Transforming Building Automation Systems (BAS), finds that open communication protocols help BAS provide better interoperability and connectivity among connected devices than proprietary protocols. Features such as scalability, networking flexibility, and interoperability offer smoother integration of third-party devices to the BAS network. With multiple proprietary communication protocols, the lack of a common communication standard among devices and systems is one of the major challenges hampering the market growth. Non-traditional building automation communication protocols are emerging due to the increase in IoT devices. Therefore, leading players are now working toward developing IP-based communication standards that can work alongside the existing communication standards.

For further information on this analysis, please visit: http://frost.ly/4tn.

"5G and Wi-Fi 6 will have a major impact on the connectivity of building technologies and are likely to accelerate the growth of IoT. 5G can provide greater accessibility when managing buildings more remotely, and Wi-Fi 6 can provide faster data transfer speed between devices and enhance device performance at low energy utilization standards," said Harikrishnan Manoharan, Senior Research Analyst, TechVision at Frost & Sullivan. "On the other hand, the emergence of IoT in BAS has somewhat blurred the lines of traditional networking standards. Protocols such as LoRaWan, MQTT, OPC-UA, and IQRF remove the need for all the IoT devices to be physically connected to the same network in the BAS and allow limitless connectivity and expansion scope."

Harikrishnan added, "One of the key communication trends in the industry is the ‘Everything over IP’ approach, which provides high levels of standardization, reliability, and availability in building automation communication standards. Leading industry players are, therefore, working toward developing IP-based communication standards that can work alongside the existing communication standards. Initiatives such as Project Connected Home over IP, IP-Blis, and the recent strategic partnership between Cisco and Schneider Electric are a few examples."

Ongoing smart building or green building development initiatives and facility managers focusing on improving the tenant experience are factors driving the adoption of emerging technologies. The following growth opportunities should also be considered:

  • Building automation service providers need to consider IP-based communication standards as they help access multiple channels for communication.
  • BAS suppliers and connected device manufacturers need to increasingly focus on enabling IP as the standardized communication protocol to improve interoperability between devices without complex and expensive gateways.
  • New product innovation and integration should be leveraged to their full potential to introduce efficient products in the market and stay competitive.
  • Considering the possibilities in emerging technologies, building automation suppliers must partner with reputed and reliable system integrators and acquire innovative startups to bring best-in-class solutions to the BAS market.

Advancements in Communication Protocols Transforming Building Automation Systems is the latest addition to Frost & Sullivan’s TechVision research and analyses available through the Frost & Sullivan Leadership Council, which helps organizations identify a continuous flow of growth opportunities to succeed in an unpredictable future.

5G Promotes the Upgrading of Traditional Industries and New Smart Digital Life

GUANGZHOU, China, Nov. 27, 2020 — A report from Science and Technology Daily | IUSTC:

On the morning of November 25, "5G and Media Industry Change and Transformation Forum" of 2020 World 5G Convention was held in Guangzhou.

On the morning of November 25, "5G and Media Industry Change and Transformation Forum" of 2020 World 5G Convention was held in Guangzhou.
On the morning of November 25, "5G and Media Industry Change and Transformation Forum" of 2020 World 5G Convention was held in Guangzhou.

The Chief Official of Science and Technology Daily, pointed out in his opening remark that media should be the "pioneer" in the 5G era, accelerate the application of 5G technology in the media sector and create a good public opinion for the application of 5G technology. Media also need to use objective and rigorous works to transmit scientific and rational points of view to the broad audience while adopting a gentle way of storytelling. In addition, he also introduced Science and Technology Daily’s goal of "One Database, Two Wings and Three Platforms" and using new technologies such as 5G to promote the in-depth integrated development of media.

Li Xudong, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, pointed out that Guangdong province has been actively promoting the development of 5G industrial application. When the 5G era begins and gradually penetrates into all aspects and details of social life, we have every reason to believe that it will bring new changes to the media industry. Li said that this forum will surely provide tremendous impetus for promoting the integrated development of media all over China and accelerating the construction of new mainstream media.

Speaking of how to speed up in-depth media integration, Fang Zhenghui, Deputy Director of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, said there are three key points to be emphasized: First, we need to embrace new technologies with a more open attitude; Second, we need to keep track of new technologies with a sharper perspective; Third, we also need to apply new technologies with a more inclusive mind.

In the keynote speech section, elites from well-known media, technology enterprises, academic field and industry at home and abroad conducted in-depth academic discussions or delivered keynote speeches on the application and development of the new round of 5G construction in media.

The guests discussed a series of topics facing the future scientific research status: the contribution of 5G technology international cooperation to the development of human society; the prospect and challenges of 5G technology application in the media sector. Some guests also mentioned that we should promote the development of new media industry chains and the development of new media based on the combination of 5G with AI, VR, blockchain and other technologies.

All guests exchanged views on promoting the application of 5G technology among media from home and abroad and make constructive advice on facilitating global promotion of 5G technology.

They agreed that 5G will provide key technical support for the construction of an intelligent media communication system with all things being a media, human-computer symbiosis, and self-evolution. Its disruptive innovations in the media industry have initially appeared.

Fang Hanting,Vice President of Science and Technology Daily, hosted the meeting.

He Concluded that in the 5G era, especially in the digital economy era, the media is the vane of society. From data-driven, intelligent connection, media think tank to scene-based immersion, pan-centralization, and then to ecological media, we can initially observe the subversive innovation of 5G technology in many aspects of the media industry. For example, with the deepening of data drive, the logical analysis behind the data will become a new field of data news, and some think tank, data, and expert data news producers will gradually become "event terminator."

Looking to the future, 5G technology will surely lead to changes in the media industry. 5G technology has brought about the trend that everything is a media. If each media wants to meet the requirements of the harmonious coexistence of multiple communication subjects (people and smart devices) in the new system, an ecological system must be constructed. This ecological system only has the chance to survive and develop in the 5G era when it meets the requirements of full media, holographic media, full media and full effect media.

Mr. Zhao Jianguo, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Guangming Daily, Mr. Zheng Bo, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Economic Daily, Mr. Cui Baoguo, Professor at School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University, Ms. Li Qin,Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China, Ms. Qu Jing, Vice President of Huawei’s Public Affairs and Communications Department, Ms. Hou Mingjuan, Vice President of Qualcomm, Mr. Zhang Jun,General Manager, Corporate Marketing and Public Relations, Tencent, Mr. Wu Junhua, Vice President of iFlytek Co., Ltd, and Mr. Savitskii Alexei, Advisor to the Editor-in-Chief of Sputnik News Agency attended keynote speech section.
