Congressional Candidate Shrina Kurani Launches Climate-Focused NFT Drop on Abris

After Kurani’s first NFT fundraising effort on Solana-based SolSea, the campaign’s new collection will be released on Abris, an environmentally-friendly marketplace built on Algorand

CORONA, Calif., March 15, 2022Shrina Kurani, a Democrat running for Congress in California’s 41st District, and Abris, a carbon-negative NFT marketplace built on Algorand, today announced the launch of "Kurani for Congr3ss," an collection of 230 NFTs designed to raise awareness for Kurani’s campaign and to highlight the potential for innovative, climate-friendly solutions in the fast-growing Web3 space. The 230 NFTs available in the drop represent the 230 billion tons of carbon remaining in the world’s "carbon budget."

The NFTs are available now through March 31 and are priced at $1250 and $5800. The assets also represent greater utility: NFT holders will have access to airdrops from other crypto and climate projects, intimate conversations with climate scientists, and exclusive invitations to the campaign’s Earth Day party in the metaverse.

In late 2021 Kurani—who seeks to engage the crypto community in the future of Web3 policy-making—became the first candidate running for federal office to launch an NFT drop. Since that time other political candidates have followed suit, demonstrating the surging interest in both NFTs and the broader financial innovation taking hold across the crypto industry.

"As a former cleantech entrepreneur I know firsthand the importance of sourcing energy-efficient processes whenever possible, yet too often this still leads to compromises and trade-offs," said Kurani. "By partnering with Abris for this drop, which leverages the hyper-efficient Algorand network, we’re shining a light on the innovation happening in the Web3 world – innovation that is community-driven, inclusive, and, yes, climate-minded. Tech- and crypto-literate legislators like myself are essential to paving a path toward this reality, and we hope this NFT drop gets people excited about everything the future of the internet can enable."

Abris is built on the Algorand blockchain, a network that is so computationally lightweight it can run on a device as simple as a Raspberry Pi. This enables creators, brands, and users to take advantage of the benefits of NFTs and digital uniqueness without the extreme energy intensiveness required by other blockchain protocols. Last year, Algorand also announced a novel partnership with ClimateTrade to offset its minimal remaining emissions and become the first carbon-negative blockchain network.

Launched in 2021, Abris is an easy-to-use platform for NFTs with a creator-driven profit structure. The marketplace is designed to enable anyone to mint NFTs securely and in a single step, as well as to sell, buy, and resell with ease. In addition to the open marketplace, Abris offers NFTs as a Service (NFTaaS), a white glove solution to help artists, galleries, political campaigns, social impact initiatives and brands mint and sell their own NFT collections.

"When innovative ideas meet technology, fundraising becomes a memorable experience," said Priya Samant, CEO of Abris. "It is very promising to see political candidates getting creative and venturing into the world of NFTs."

Aboriginal Male Healing Centre’s Holistic Approach Breaks Cycle of Domestic Violence with Data-driven Case Management Solution Built in Western Australia

>> ECINS works with Centre to custom build new client engagement module to establish rehabilitation program for domestic violence offenders with long-term successful outcomes

NEWMAN, Australia, Jan. 20, 2022 — The Aboriginal Male Healing Centre (AMHC), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to making an impact on domestic violence and its effect on communities and families, partnered with ECINS, Australia’s most collaborative case management system, to record data, demonstrate results, apply for grants, attract socially enterprising investors, and receive more funding to grow their organisation and support more clients.

Solution built to meet challenges AMHC faced in Western Australia

AMHC’s efforts are focused in Newman, a Western Australian mining town with a large indigenous community. Financial inequality coupled with historical oppression has caused the people of Newman to become vulnerable to poverty, homelessness, alcoholism, drug abuse, and an extremely high incidence of domestic violence. Operating with limited resources, AMHC worked with ECINS to create a solution specifically for the challenges that the organisation was facing.

By deploying the ECINS Client Engagement Module – the mobile application developed in Western Australia – as part of their collaborative case management solution, AMHC recognised a significant increase in its impact.

Streamlining key to successful outcomes for rehabilitation program

"The Client Engagement Module streamlines the whole support process for the participants," said Devon Cuimara, the Chief Executive Officer at AMHC. "Clients are now empowered to take charge of their healing process. We knew if we could give the offender and the family support mechanisms, we could enable them to maintain vigilance."

Equipped with comprehensive statistical data demonstrating their program’s efficacy, AHMC has expanded its services to more people while developing an application for a $40 million government endowment to develop a residential facility to further their support offerings.

Cutting edge innovation helps AMHC secure funding for continued impact

Cuimara continues, "Our partnership with ECINS gives us a competitive advantage and places us at the cutting edge of monitoring and evaluation. This is going to be a significant catalyst in our success in securing funding moving forward."

The results are already evident. The partnership positioned AMHC to enhance their offerings, including a new "walk-up" service that allows people to self-refer into the program.

"Supporting the whole person is essential to the organisation serving the client successfully," explains Thomas Pettengell, ECINS’ Australia Operations Manager. "Our Client Engagement Module was developed right here in Western Australia, and we are thrilled with the ways it’s already helping AMHC more effectively serve their community and expand their capabilities."

Smart links up with PH government on war vs organized global syndicate on SMS spamming

MANILA, Philippines, Nov. 23, 2021 — PLDT’s wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) fully supports the move of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the National Privacy Commission (NPC), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to investigate and stop the proliferation of SMS spam-based scam and fraud.

From October 21 to November 20, Smart has blocked a daily average of 400 to 500 mobile numbers found to be related to SMS spam, and some 40 domains and IP addresses used by online scammers.

These follow the recent sudden spike in SMS spam, where mobile users receive unsolicited but enticing messages from strange numbers, that then lead to an elaborate online phishing scam where the target mobile users end up falling victims to fraud.

"We are one with the NTC, NPC, and DTI in protecting our customers from these unscrupulous individuals. As we work tirelessly to ensure the integrity of our own cybersecurity systems, we encourage our customers to be vigilant and alert so that we can work with the authorities to prevent these scams and eventually stop these cybercriminals," according to PLDT and Smart President and CEO Al Panlilio.

Mobile users are reminded to not entertain questions or surveys from unknown senders, and to never provide their personal information to strangers. Those who receive suspicious and unsolicited SMS may also report the scammers and their numbers direct to the NTC (https://ntc.gov.ph/complaint). The NTC, after due process, may then order Smart to cut the cybercriminals’ numbers.

Smart has also implemented blocking access to domains and IP addresses evidently found to be related to these fraudulent schemes.

"We protect our customers and block accounts based on mobile numbers associated with fraud. But since mobile numbers may be easily replaced, we also block on the domain and IP address levels, as soon as we have evidence that a specific domain is used as a platform by scammers," according to PLDT and Smart Chief Information and Security Officer Angel T. Redoble.

"In fact we have identified and blocked about 40 domains and IP addresses involved in this scam, which leads us to believe that this is a huge and sophisticated scam by an organized global syndicate. We urge our customers to be very paranoid and to never share sensitive information especially with strangers no matter how enticing the offer may sound," added Redoble.

The Korea Herald introduces: Korea’s Pyeongtaek to hold 2021 Global Peace and Security Forum to discuss ROK-U.S. alliance and coexistence

PYEONGTAEK, South Korea, Sept. 23, 2021 — Following announcement covered by The Korea Herald, Pyeongtaek City will host the 2021 Pyeongtaek Global Peace and Security Forum from September 27 to 28 in Seoul, South Korea.

Under the slogan of "Opening A New Chapter of Peace And Security," the forum will take place in a hybrid format according to the COVID-19 quarantine guidelines – a minimum number of on-site participants invited or pre-registered are expected to attend the forum, and those who do not can view the discussions live-streamed on Arirang TV’s YouTube channel.

Pyeongtaek City minimizes the number of on-site guests as well. Only a few figures are expected to appear at the forum to deliver their congratulatory messages. They include Pyeongtaek Mayor Jeong Jang-sun, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong, Chairman of Pyeongtaek City Council Hong Sun-eui, and National Assembly members Yu Eui-dong and Hong Kee-won.

Song Min-soon, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, will also attend the forum to make his keynote speech about the "Peace Process in Northeast Asia and the Korea-U.S. Alliance." Vincent Keith Brooks, former U.S. military commander, will give a special address online in real-time.

Pyeongtaek City said that this peace and security forum, the first of its kind, will create an opportunity to discuss measures to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula. With this goal, Jung Seung-jo, President of Korea-US Alliance Foundation (KUSAF), and Jeon In-beom, former South Korean Army Lieutenant General, will preside the two main sessions: "The Changing Role of the United States Forces Korea (USFK) According to the Korea-U.S. Alliance and Northeast Asian Security Environment" and "The Role of Pyeongtaek City for the Evolved Korea-U.S. Alliance in Pyeongtaek," respectively.

Since all sessions will be live-streamed on YouTube, those who want to participate in the forum from home and abroad can join the Q&A session and interactively communicate with the speakers in real-time through the video conferencing system.

Mayor Jeong Jang-sun said, "As the central city of the Korea-U.S. alliance, Pyeongtaek is making every effort to discover and lead the role of local governments in the diplomatic and security sectors by holding the Global Peace and Security Forum." He added, "The city will make thorough preparations for the forum to make it safe amid the unprecedented situation of the COVID-19 pandemic."

Decoding Taiwan’s Information Security Industry’s Dilemma

TAIPEI, July 29, 2021 — Brain Shen, Chairman of Information Service Industry Association (CISA), has recently published an article titled "Decoding Taiwan’s Information Security Industry’s Dilemma", sharing the views of the Information Security development in Taiwan. The full text is as follows:

Brain Shen, Chairman of Information Service Industry Association (CISA)
Brain Shen, Chairman of Information Service Industry Association (CISA)

In November of 2017, Taiwan held the Information Security Industry Strategy Conference, and in 2018 Taiwan’s public sectors and private enterprises visited Israel to observe their Information Security (InfoSec) industry. These two events led to the formulation of the 2018-2025 Taiwan Information Security Industry Development Plan. Many parts of this plan refer to Israel’s InfoSec industry; however, it fails to take the differing industrial strengths and public roles of Taiwan and Israel into account. The result is that now, three years later, the Taiwan InfoSec industry has only seen severely limited growth marked by the complete absence of any sizeable InfoSec businesses.

Though the Taiwan InfoSec market is limited, many small-scale businesses do exist, an indication that there is still plenty of potential for innovation in the industry. Yet even though the industry is full of opportunities to capitalize on, in scale it remains stagnant. How the authority should develop an environment in which the InfoSec industry can flourish is a question of the utmost importance. I recommend that the authority should work to build an InfoSec ecosystem by integrating resources in the industry and assisting businesses with outsourcing; after all, in order for this industry to grow, it cannot rely solely on the Taiwan market.

How, then, should an environment for the InfoSec industry be constructed? First, public policies should be developed to guide large Taiwanese companies to invest in the industry, so that these enterprises become the focal and dominant firms in the InfoSec ecosystem. The fields in which they invest should enable them to integrate different kinds of InfoSec solutions, including providing InfoSec cloud services and developing products which combine software with hardware. Only when these focal firms come together to continually invest in the industry will it further drive the development of startups, as this would provide momentum to attract talent and spur innovation. Furthermore, as there is a severe lack of InfoSec talent in Taiwan, unless large-scale ICT companies are guided to invest in the InfoSec industry, the result will be a lack of industry-academia cooperation and the industry finding it hard to resolve the dearth of talent and major companies.

Current public policy favors expanding Taiwan InfoSec market, but doing so neglects the characteristics of Taiwanese enterprises: large international groups and financial holding companies in Taiwan will not risk utilizing the security solutions of small-scale InfoSec companies (these companies might not even have products suitable for large companies), and small and medium-sized enterprises favor products from foreign InfoSec companies, thus failing to benefit local small-scale InfoSec manufacturers.

I suggest the authority prioritize the efficiency of capital output and input. In order to do so, it must: 1) use tax policy to incentivize large-scale ICT manufacturers to invest in InfoSec development; 2) use the Taiwan Development Fund to set up an InfoSec investment fund in collaboration with large-scale ICT manufacturers, with a professional investment team handling the fund to invest in Taiwan InfoSec manufacturers; 3) establish Public Information Security Policies as important fields for Taiwan security solutions to develop in; 4) reward large-scale ICT manufacturers for global acquisitions of InfoSec startups; and 5) encourage large international InfoSec companies to set up research and development centers in Taiwan. Currently, there is sufficient funding in the InfoSec market; only by utilizing big data analysis combined with researchers in the field and policies dedicated to developing an industry ecosystem can we resolve the dilemma of stagnant growth in the InfoSec industry.

SEMI Applauds President Biden, Bipartisan Congressional Leaders for Supporting Semiconductor Supply Chain Incentives

MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 26, 2021 — SEMI, the industry association serving the global electronics design and manufacturing supply chain, today released the following statement from president and CEO Ajit Manocha on the support of funding incentives to expand U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and research by President Biden and a bipartisan group of members of Congress in a meeting at the White House on February 24, 2021.

"We thank President Biden and bipartisan congressional leaders for their support of incentives for U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and research. Enacting an investment tax credit and funding the programs authorized last year will help build needed semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the U.S. and reverse America’s declining share of global chip production. We look forward to working with the Biden administration and Congress on these and other policies to strengthen the semiconductor manufacturing supply chain that is the lifeblood of technology innovation driving countless societal and economic benefits worldwide."

SEMI strongly supported the CHIPS for America Act, which included a refundable investment tax credit (ITC) to build U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capacity, a Commerce Department program to provide grants to semiconductor manufacturing projects, and authorizations for significant new semiconductor research programs and funding. The Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act signed into law this January authorized the Commerce Department and semiconductor research programs in the CHIPS for America Act but failed to provide new funding. SEMI supports enactment of all three major pillars of the CHIPS for America Act, which together will promote U.S. semiconductor research and manufacturing.

Attending the meeting with President Biden were Sens. Cornyn (R-TX), Warner (D-VA), Baldwin (D-WI), Blackburn (R-TN), Braun (R-IN), Duckworth (D-IL), Hassan (D-NH), and Portman (R-OH); and Reps. Matsui (D-CA), McCaul (R-TX), and Joyce (R-PA).

Beijing, with a permanent migrant population of nearly 10 million, is ready to accommodate the people with a hearty and homelike reception.

The Beijing Municipal Government has rolled out measures to ensure those who stay in the city enjoy the Spring Festival, including issuing shopping coupons and free entrance tickets. CGTN: After ‘extraordinary’ 2020, what are Xi Jinping’s expectations for 2021?

BEIJING, Jan. 4, 2021 — 2021, a year that marks the beginning of China’s new five-year plan period and the 100th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), is knocking at the door.

What are Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expectations for 2021, especially after the country’s hard-won achievements in 2020?

Clues can be found in his New Year address.

2021: ‘Striving is the only way forward’

China will enter a new stage of development to build a modern socialist country in an all-round way in 2021, as the CPC leadership has adopted proposals for formulating the 14th Five-Year Plan and long-range goals.

"The road ahead is long; striving is the only way forward," Xi said in his address, calling for efforts to set up a new pattern for development to be accelerated, deeply implementing high-quality development and further deepening reform and expanding opening-up.

Rising above virus test, China’s top leaders set the economic priorities for 2021 in the key Central Economic Work Conference held in December, stressing that China will keep its macro policies consistent, stable and sustainable in 2021, with continued implementation of a proactive fiscal policy and prudent monetary policy.

In 2021, the country will take a solid first step in building the new development paradigm in which domestic and foreign markets reinforce each other, with the domestic market as the mainstay.

Meanwhile, the president stressed the need to keep working hard to promote rural vitalization as the country has achieved decisive success in eradicating extreme poverty in 2020.

In the next five years, efforts will be made to consolidate achievements in the fight against poverty and fully promote the strategy of rural vitalization, according to the CPC Central Committee’s proposed major social and economic development targets for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).

China is set to end absolute poverty by 2020, what’s next?

To realize all these goals, upholding the Party leadership is the most fundamental guarantee, Xi has said on many occasions.

In his New Year address, Xi described the Party as a gigantic vessel that leads China forward steadily with people’s expectations and the hope of the nation and stressed the importance of "original aspiration."

The CPC was founded with an original aspiration: the mission to seek happiness for the Chinese people and rejuvenation for the Chinese nation, and has remained committed to the people-centered philosophy of development.

The CPC’s original aspiration is even firmer 100 years later, Xi said.

2020: ‘Extraordinary’ in various areas

Looking back at 2020, the president described the year as an "anti-epidemic epic" and devoted much of his address to highlighting China’s all-out people’s war against COVID-19.

"Greatness is forged in the ordinary. Heroes come from the people. Every person is remarkable!" Xi said, before sending his sympathies to all those infected with the coronavirus.

In September, three outstanding medical professionals were conferred the national honorary title "the People’s Hero," while a total of 1,499 individuals, 500 groups, 186 CPC members and 150 primary-level Party organizations were commended for their roles in fighting the epidemic, and another 14 Party members were posthumously awarded.

Meanwhile, China has participated actively in several global meetings to provide the international community with solutions and experiences, such as the G20 virtual summit on COVID-19the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China, Japan and South Korea (ASEAN Plus Three or APT) on COVID-19, and a special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers’ meeting on the outbreak.

President Xi also reviewed China’s achievements in various areas.

China is the first major economy worldwide to achieve positive growth in 2020, and its GDP is expected to step up to a new level of 100 trillion yuan. China has seen a good harvest in grain production for 17 years in a row, according to the president.

China's GDP growth in 2020 expected to be 1.9% by IMF

Within eight years, under the current standard, China has eradicated extreme poverty for the nearly 100 million rural people affected, and all the 832 impoverished counties have shaken off poverty, he added.

China has seen breakthroughs in scientific explorations like the Tianwen-1 (Mars mission), Chang’e-5 (lunar probe), and Fendouzhe (deep-sea manned submersible). Construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port is proceeding with vigor, Xi said.

The president also recalled the unforgettable memories in 2020, including his inspections of 13 provincial-level regions, the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and his phone calls with friends from the international community to combat the pandemic.
