CNN’s ‘Tech for Good’ meets inspiring people who are using technology to overcome adversity

HONG KONG, Aug. 26, 2020 — In the second episode of CNN’s new series ‘Tech For Good’, anchor and correspondent Kristie Lu Stout meets five inspiring people from across the globe who are using technology to beat the odds and excel in everything from sport, to cultural preservation, to gaming.

CNN’s ‘Tech for Good’ meets inspiring people who are using technology to overcome adversity
CNN’s ‘Tech for Good’ meets inspiring people who are using technology to overcome adversity

CNN first speaks with South African surfer and swimmer Caleb Swanepoel, who was back in the water just three weeks after losing his leg in a shark attack, with the help of a state-of-the-art prosthetic limb. Designed by German company Ottobock, the prosthetic is computerized and uses sensors to mimic a natural gait – allowing Swanepoel to continue doing what he loves most, and even compete in international championships.

Wearable technology is helping British ultramarathoner Simon Wheatcroft stay on track. Faced with the challenges of mobility that came with losing his eyesight as a teenager, Wheatcroft helped to develop technology that could enable him to run without a guide. Stout learns how he uses the Wayband, a watch-like haptic device by WearWorks which sends pulses to his wrists whenever he veers off-course. He hopes the technology will enable a new level of independence for the visually-impaired community.

Archaeologist Solsiré Cusicanqui uses technology to conduct drone surveys and 3D modelling to unearth the secrets of a pre-Hispanic civilization that prospered in the Andes Mountains in Peru. She explains to CNN how such discoveries have helped instill a sense of identity and pride in the local communities of Peru’s northern highlands, and shares how technology has empowered her as a female archaeologist.

Stout then meets Adonian Chan, a graphic and type designer with an ambition to preserve an endangered calligraphy style native to his hometown of Hong Kong. Chan is using software called Glyphs to digitize the style – called Beiwei Kaishu – into a contemporary typeface which could eventually be installed on phones and computers. He says the technology allows him to adapt this ancient writing style to the needs of modern society, preventing its extinction.

Finally, ‘Tech for Good’ catches up with Ryan Hart – also known as ‘Robotnik’ – a professional video gamer from the UK. Hart reveals that he found a community in arcades after becoming homeless when he was 18, and that he turned to competitive gaming as a form of creative expression. He has since won hundreds of events around the world, and is now considered one of Europe’s best players.

CNN launches new series ‘Tech for Good’ showcasing the transformational power of technology

HONG KONG, Aug. 5, 2020 — This month, CNN launches a brand new cross-platform series which showcases life-changing technologies that are helping people overcome personal hurdles and take their passions to new heights.

CNN launches new series ‘Tech for Good’ showcasing the transformational power of technology
CNN launches new series ‘Tech for Good’ showcasing the transformational power of technology

‘Tech For Good’ is a television and digital series which sees CNN anchor and correspondent Kristie Lu Stout share a collection of intimate, inspiring and transformative stories from every corner of the globe.

In the first of four 30-minute shows, CNN meets five incredible artists who have harnessed the power of tech for creative expression.

Lu Stout first speaks with South Korean percussionist Kyungho Jeon, whose blindness meant his dream of playing in an orchestra initially seemed out of reach. Jeon then co-created the haptic baton, a wearable device that converts movements into vibrations – allowing him to be led by a conductor and perform with an ensemble.

Based in the coastal town of Santa Cruz, California, artist Colleen Flanigan has seen first-hand the threats facing marine biodiversity. CNN learns how Flanigan has merged her two worlds of art and activism by using the Google Tilt Brush to design reef habitats for endangered organisms. The system allows users to create 3D imagery with a controller that mimics a paintbrush – bringing ideas to life, literally.

Assistive technology is a rapidly growing industry. Lu Stout meets Sarah Ezekiel, whose ALS – a condition that has rendered her unable to speak or move – has not stopped her from creating. Ezekiel uses EyeGaze technology from Tobii Dynavox to paint with the movement of her eyes. She shares the artistic processes behind her artworks, and explains how the EyeGaze device has allowed her to take back control of her life.

For filmmaker Chase Burton, technology has provided a whole new way to experience music. CNN joins him working on a musical score, using a vibrating suit which stimulates parts of his body allowing him to feel, rather than hear the sounds – because Burton is deaf. He describes the technology not as compensatory, but as a gateway to an entirely new, holistic method for appreciating music – for both deaf and hearing audiences.

Finally, ‘Tech for Good’ catches up with Indian YouTube megastar, Gangavva. The farmer’s life was changed by technology when she started appearing in the video series ‘My Village Show’, which propelled her to internet stardom and has since attracted millions of views, subscribers, and generated a steady income for her entire village.

“In recent years, iQIYI’s original productions have sparked heated discussion amongst domestic and overseas users,” said Wang Xiaohui, Chief Content Officer of iQIYI. “iQIYI has always valued the importance of having quality content and diversified content categories over elements such as the celebrity appeal of actors. We will continue to devote ourselves to these values and lead the way in letting the international community know that the Chinese entertainment industry is capable of producing world-class quality content.”

The Bad Kids marks the most recent of a string of iQIYI original productions that have achieved remarkable domestic and international popularity and received widespread critical acclaim. During the past two years, iQIYI has also introduced a variety of blockbuster original dramas such as Story of Yanxi Palace and The Thunder. For example, the Qing dynasty-based period drama Story of Yanxi Palace, known for its accurate and detailed portrayal of traditional Chinese culture, was released in 2018 to significant popularity and became the most viewed Chinese drama series for 40 consecutive days during its run, receiving 700 million daily views at one point and eventually becoming the most google drama series of 2018. Regarded as milestones of Chinese TV production, these shows are representative of iQIYI’s emphasis on its progression in producing high-quality and diversified content.
