MWC Shanghai 2021 Makes A Dramatic Return With 200,000 Representatives As An International Physical & Digital Event

HONG KONG, March 5, 2021Connected Impact was the theme of MWC Shanghai 2021 and the GSMA has just revealed that the event held in February attracted around 25,000 attendees from 114 countries and territories. In a Covid era with extensive travel restrictions, this is an outstanding result. The My MWCS Online portal transformed the three-day event into a truly global affair which accounted for approximately 30 per cent of attendee turnout. Another 175,000 people viewed presentations, keynotes, and other program components via the event’s official media partner, C114. Content from the event remains available over the next few weeks and can be accessed here: https://mwc2021-login.gotin.online/login_page?lang=en.

As Asia’s leading exhibition and conference for the mobile ecosystem, MWC Shanghai attracted leaders across mobile and adjacent industries. With 350 speakers and senior-level executives making up around 58% of the conference crowd, including 576 CEO’s, the event spanned 50,000 sqm across the Shanghai New International Expo Centre and Kerry Hotel Pudong. Playing host to 220 exhibitors and sponsors, the event was once again carbon-neutral and included discussion of the mobile industry’s actions on reducing carbon footprints.

"MWC Shanghai 2021 was a resounding success, safely held with enhanced Covid precautions, and despite extensive domestic and international travel and capacity restrictions triggered by the global pandemic. The event went ahead as a positive signal of our industry’s determination to connect people, industry and society and contributing to global recovery," said CEO GSMA Ltd., John Hoffman. "China has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to growing the 5G landscape and was the perfect choice to launch our MWC series for 2021. I sincerely thank the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Cyberspace Administration of China, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and Pudong New District Municipal Government, our Board, Partners, Exhibitors, Sponsors, Speakers, the Press and all involved in this event that make MWC Shanghai 2021 a reality."

The place to launch new products

MWC Shanghai 2021 was also a platform for product innovation, including a range of pioneering devices from leading players. Amongst the line-up was ZTE’s Axon 30 smartphone, its latest endeavour to design a phone with a selfie camera hidden under the display. Oppo showed a 125-watt flash charger, which can fully recharge a smartphone in 20 minutes. Huawei, meanwhile, presented its folding Mate X2 handset, which the company proclaimed can be closed without there being a gap around the hinge, an issue that has plagued similar designs.

The IN crowd

Our new 5G Innovation Zone gave start-ups and entrepreneurs a platform to connect with investors and become future disruptors.

The zone included 80 exhibitors, displaying immersive 5G experiences that leveraged China Telecom’s 5G, Cloud XR and Digital Twin technologies, creating a unique experience for participants by moving them from the physical space into the virtual dimension. It removed physical constraint and greatly enriched the quality of the exhibition.

It also showcased how the most cutting-edge 5G thinking and technology is already serving society, providing in-person and virtual guests with the opportunity to explore the best examples.

2021 AMOs Success

The Asia Mobile Awards are always a highlight of MWC Shanghai, and this year was no exception. The Outstanding Contribution to the Asia Mobile Industry Award recognises sustained or extraordinary contributions by individuals, organisations or collaborative achievements that advance the value and benefits of mobile communications for people, business and societies in Asia. This year, Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA, was proud to announce joint winners, Wang Xiaochu, chairman and CEO of China Unicom and Ke Ruiwen, chairman and CEO China Telecom, for the world’s largest 5G commercial network sharing project.

The second honour, Smartphone of the Year, is awarded for outstanding performance, innovation and leadership as determined by assessing smartphones on the market during the last 18 months. John Hoffman announced the 2021 award went to Apple for the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Series. The judges also gave a special commendation to the Samsung Galaxy Z-Flip for continued innovation and development in the flexible display field.

Our thanks

In the most challenging circumstances, people came together. They demonstrated the ecosystem’s strength, commitment to innovation, and firm belief that mobile technology must play a vital role in the global recovery. Our sincere thanks to our Board, Partners, Exhibitors, Sponsors, Speakers, the Press and all involved in this event. Your resilience, commitment, and generosity were felt by participants worldwide and created hope, sending a positive signal about what 2021 has in store.

Looking to Barcelona

"The next platform for the mobile communications industry is MWC Barcelona in June," said Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA. "The lessons learnt in Shanghai and the momentum gained will enable us to deliver another world-class event. The global recovery from the pandemic will continue to rely on our industry’s technology. The prospects for wireless connectivity have never been greater. Barcelona will be the place to be for anyone wanting to maximise those opportunities."

Chinese Industrial Internet Solution to Lead New Tech Revolution

BEIJING, March 4, 2021 — The world-leading provider of solutions to better life Haier’s COSMOPlat topped the list of China’s 15 leading domestic cross-industry and cross-domain industrial internet platforms unveiled by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology at the end of 2020. The evaluation was an effort to boost the development of China’s industrial internet.

Haier Group President Zhou Yunjie (left), visited Qingdao Choho Industrial Co. Ltd. on February 23. Haier’s COSMOPlat established a strategic cooperation last May with Choho, helping the company in digital transformation and upgrading.
Haier Group President Zhou Yunjie (left), visited Qingdao Choho Industrial Co. Ltd. on February 23. Haier’s COSMOPlat established a strategic cooperation last May with Choho, helping the company in digital transformation and upgrading.

COSMOPlat is the world’s first industrial internet platform that allows whole-process user participation. It has been assigned by the three major international standardization organizations – IEEE, IEC and ISO, the leaders to formulate international standards of mass customization solutions.

The European Union (EU) has invited COSMOPlat to get involved in its GAIA-X initiative, a cloud project aiming to enhance Europe’s data infrastructure and digital sovereignty. The EU also has decided to build the 10th innovation center for industrial internet in China, with COSMOPlat as the only partner outside the EU.

User involvement is one of the main reasons these organizations have chosen COSMOPlat as a partner. Henning Kagermann, known as the father of Industry 4.0, said that COSMOPlat builds an ecosystem on the basis of user experience, rather than just focusing on factories and automation.

The platform has so far tapped into 15 sectors, from building a customization network in the fashion industry involving designers, garment factories and clients to offering solutions to the suppliers, purchasers and processors in the stone mining business.

Haier has also expanded COSMOPlat to 20 countries in the world, boosting the growth of its international brands, such as GE Appliances in the United States, Candy in Italy and Fisher & Paykel in New Zealand.

Globally, industrial internet platforms in different regions show distinguishing characteristics. The US, led by GE and Amazon, uses its advanced Internet, information, communication and software technologies to reshape manufacturing in a top-down approach. Europe, on the other hand, with Siemens, Bosch and SAP giving full play to their advantages in high-end manufacturing, focuses on a bottom-up optimization of production process that covers intelligent factories and smart manufacturing and logistics.

China has also witnessed robust growth of industrial internet over recent years. There are about 600 industrial internet platforms worldwide, of which 500 are based in China. As both a global major manufacturer and an Internet powerhouse, China is building a user-driven industrial internet ecosystem, which highlights the linkage and interactions between the industries and users.

Haier’s COSMOPlat is a representative of the Chinese-style industrial internet, and this model is widely anticipated to bring about a new wave of industrial revolution with far more influence than the previous three revolutions.

Chinese dance show recreates glamour of Tang Dynasty

BEIJING, Feb. 26, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on a dance show featured Tang Dynasty culture:

During Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, dance show "Night Banquet in the Tang Dynasty Palace" went viral on Chinese social media. The five-minute performance depicts a group of plump palace maid figurines who "came to life," capering around on their way to a court feast.

Modern digital technologies including VR and AR, are used to produce a combination of virtual scene with real stage, shifting from a museum housing such national treasures as the owl-shaped wine vessel and Jiahu Bone Flutes, to majestic red-walled palaces. This visual feast allowed viewers to travel back in time to the Tang Dynasty.

The Tang Dynasty is considered a golden age in China’s long history. In the seventh century, when America and Africa were still "sleeping continents," China was experiencing unprecedented national unity, with wise and open-minded political governance, intellectual liberation and a vibrant economy. Diverse cultures intermixed, and the Chinese civilization spread throughout the world along the ancient Silk Road.

In the show, the dancers wore padded clothing with cotton in their cheeks to better represent the full-figured Tang women. Meanwhile, the crescent-shaped makeup on their temples faithfully reproduced the fashionable "xiehong" makeup of the time. The dancers were dressed in simple and bright clothing with low-cut necklines, showing the diverse Tang Dynasty fashion. These details vividly illustrate the free, open and confident look of Tang women, as well as the affluence and openness of the society.

The dancers wielded flutes, cymbals, five-stringed lutes and panpipes, which were popular musical instruments during the Sui and Tang dynasties. Many of these were introduced to China during ancient times, demonstrating the Tang Dynasty’s inclusive culture which integrated elements from East and West.

Openness, inclusiveness and the coexistence and mixture of different civilizations are why this period continues to fascinate people around the world, and the idea behind it is a valuable heritage passed on by the Tang Dynasty.

Nowadays, many people from other countries are keenly interested in cultural elements from the Tang dynasty, including the costumes, architecture, and related films and TV shows. At the same time, however, some have also deliberately stirred up controversy. The real Tang Dynasty culture is worth more attention.

"Night Banquet in the Tang Dynasty Palace" gives viewers a glimpse into this fascinating culture. Through the mobile internet and digital technologies, these "national treasures," preserved as part of China’s 5,000-year history and culture, are waiting to be known and appreciated by more.
