TAIPEI, Sept. 25, 2020 — The 2020 World System Integrator Conference (WSIC) online forum week, organized by System Integration Promotion Alliance (SIPA), covers smart cities, international cooperation in system integration, and the current developmental needs of countries. More than 100 overseas manufacturers and 350 people participated in the event.

The speakers from the four Taiwanese manufacturers and Ms. Vivian Huang (Director General, III) From left to right:Syscom Group President, James Liu, Aaeon Technology Senior Advisor, Steve Hsu, Director General, III, Ms. Vivian Huang, Glory Technology CEO, Eric Chang, Chunghwa Telecom Director, Hsuan-Lung Liu

Representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) shared strategies to help modernize infrastructure through digital technology. The winners of Taiwan’s 2020 System Integration Award also shared their success stories, and Taiwanese system integrators and representatives from Thailand, Indonesia, Russia, and India discussed their experiences in various countries.

Since the first WSIC last year, the System Integration Promotion Alliance Project Office (SIPA) of the "Industrial Development Bureau" (IDB), "Ministry of Economic Affairs" has arranged more than 70 meetings between manufacturers, opened up at least 20 business opportunities, and facilitated cooperation between Taiwanese manufacturers and local players in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

This year, the Minister of the "National Development Council" (NDC), Kung Ming-Hsin and the Deputy Director-General of the IDB, "Ministry of Economic Affairs" (MOEA), Yang Chih-ching were specially invited to speak.

Minister Kung Ming-Hsin shared that the government began the Asia Silicon Valley Development Plan in 2016 to promote economic growth through entrepreneurship, industrial transformation through the Industrial Internet of Things, global resources for innovation and R&D, system integration capabilities of domestic enterprises, and overseas markets. Taiwan also plans to establish three international-level system integration companies.

Deputy Director-General, Yang Chih-ching also mentioned that system integration has become one of Taiwan’s important industrial directions. Between 2018 to 2020, solutions tested included 224 smart services that have been developed in 22 counties and cities across Taiwan. These covered 5G factories, remote medical care on outlying islands, AI environmental monitoring, smart transportation, and smart learning.

The four Taiwanese manufacturers invited by WSIC this year have all been successful overseas export cases:

•  The Syscom Group, which developed smart service robots used in Japan.

•  AAEON, which has collaborated with General Electric (GE) to acquire an energy project for four power plants in the U.S.

•  Glory Technology, which expanded the railway communication systems in Thailand and the Philippines.

•  Chunghwa Telecom, which deployed telecommunications networks in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia, and implemented information and communication applications in new smart parks.

Despite industrial impacts from COVID-19, pandemic-prevention technologies, such as AI thermal imaging and disease control systems have been recognized internationally. Hopefully, this will become an emerging field for system integration and export development in Taiwan.

In addition to the WSIC online forum this year, SIPA also set up a pavilion on smart solution and system integration at the 2020 Smart City Online Exhibition.

All are welcome to visit the website at https://smartcityonline.org.tw/pavilion.php?vip=SIPA

Third UNESCO Creative Cities Beijing Summit Calls for Open and Inclusive International Cooperation across Regions

BEIJING, Sept. 22, 2020 — With the theme of "Creativity empowers cities, technology creates the future", the Third UNESCO Creative Cities Beijing Summit, organized by Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, explored how culture, creativity, and technology can enhance urban city management. The summit participants stressed the importance of international cooperation across regions.

"Digitalization has been a major game-changer and will certainly remain a key component of a new normal," said Lamia Kamal-Chaoui, Director of the OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, Small & Medium Enterprises, Regions and Cities. "Many cities have adopted smart city tools, especially to deliver municipal service.

"Cities also have the opportunity to reconsider their tourism growth models and explore alternatives to large-scale tourism, by taking advantage of technology to showcase over-visited global attractions and promoting local industries."

Since Beijing was designated a UNESCO City of Design in 2012, its creative industry has become a new source of economic growth. The transformation of Shougang No. 3 Blast-Furnace – the venue of this summit – from a steel structure in an industrial park into an open space for the public, closely aligns with UNESCO’s mission and priorities.

Advocating for an open and inclusive city cooperation environment, many leaders stressed the importance of international cooperation during the summit.

Virginia Raggi, Mayor of Rome, stated, "We focus on urban regeneration as a factor in improving the well-being of residents and tourists, and strongly believe in international collaboration. Multilateralism and reciprocity represent the founding values of our democracy."

"If something was clear to all of us, it is that ‘no one can be saved alone’," said Enrique Avogadro, Minister of Culture of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires. "We have a unique opportunity to build a new reality and a future different from the one we had in mind. And more importantly, we can do it collectively, listening and giving space to all voices and ideas."

Flexiv Brings the Latest Adaptive Robotics Technology and Applications to CIIF 2020

SHANGHAI, Sept. 19, 2020 — On September 15, 2020, at the 22nd China International Industry Fair, Flexiv Ltd. showcased their cutting-edge robotics technology and industrial applications based on adaptive robots, including the world’s leading force control technology, the ultimate fusion of robotics and AI, and a series of industrial solutions.

Cutting-edge tech to create most advanced robot products

Flexiv officially launched their adaptive robot Rizon last year as a new generation of robotic products. With its disruptive and innovative product design, unique adaptivity, simple and aesthetic industrial design, and brand-new product value, Rizon has been awarded by both the iF Design Award and German Innovation Awards.

High-precision and fast-response force control technology throughout the full arm is the core feature of the adaptive robot. Rizon supports seven degrees of freedom, each joint equipped with proprietary force and torque sensing technology.

With the advanced whole-body force control algorithm applied to the adaptive robots, Rizon improves the force perception and force control performance by orders of magnitude compared to traditional robots.

In order to better demonstrate the advanced nature of force control technology, Flexiv presented the Ball Balancing Challenge at this year’s CIIF.

In it, the adaptive robot determines a ball’s position on a tray in real time, based on the detection data generated by the force sensor. It can then control the ball to move along its target trajectory. If the robot arm or ball encounters any external disturbance, the robot quickly makes real-time adjustments that returns the ball to its original route.

It is worth mentioning that the display operates entirely on force control. In this way, it is similar to persons who close their eyes, relying solely on their arms’ force perception and control to maintain the balance of the ball on the smooth tray.

Flexiv also demonstrated the deep integration potential of robotics and AI technology at the event. In intelligent table tidy-up task, the robot effectively identifies, classifies and autonomously picks and places randomly positioned items. In the application of body massage, it recognizes a person’s body posture and local features in real time, performs massage according to the person’s needs, while making real-time adjustments to ensure an enjoyable and safe experience.

Innovative industrial applications break through the limitations of traditional automation

Flexiv is committed to creating industry-level solutions for different scenarios, replacing manual tasks that used to be hard to automate, and upgrading low-flexibility automated production lines. Following continuous deepening and iteration of industrial applications, Flexiv focuses on three application demonstrations at this year’s CIIF: force control assembling, curved surface sanding and polishing, and connector plugging with wiring harness.

Take the application of curved-surface polishing for example. Surface polishing technology is widely used across a number of industries such as automotive, electronics and furniture. The quality of the polishing process, and the control of loss of raw materials, directly impact the final appearance of the product and the cost of the production line. In this case, manual work is still required.

Traditional robotic polishing solutions often require additional force sensors or force-controlled floating devices to be installed at the end of the robotic arm, requiring high procurement and maintenance costs, and have limited ability in handling complex workpieces. The adaptive robot, however, requires no additional equipment, yet is able to completely change the inherent mode.

Flexiv’s polishing application ensures accurate fit to complex workpiece surfaces and the precise polishing force control. The control system is simple and easy to use, compatible with a variety of sizes of machine parts, and adapts automatically to the deviation of the workpiece and tooling.

The application of automotive interior parts sanding exhibited at CIIF only requires the operator to import the sanding trajectory via simple trajectory dragging and teaching, using a  streamlined and illustrated system to set the sanding process. Then the application provides high-precision hybrid control of force and position to ensure stable and reliable results.

"Having perfected the product and applications, based on industrial trials over the past year, we’ve brought a batch of more complete and innovative applications to this year’s CIIF," said Dr. Wang Shiquan, co-founder and CEO of Flexiv. "At the same time, we’ve got some really interesting interactive displays to offer  the audience a more intuitive experience, through which they can familiarize with the unique characteristics of adaptive robots and feel the fusion of the latest force control and AI technology. Flexiv will continue to innovate and explore product technologies to make robots more dexterous, intelligent, flexible, and universal, and facilitate the next generation of industrial automation."
