LG Display is also offering a game-changer to its customers at CES 2021 in a Restaurant Zone, where a sushi bar can utilize a 55-inch Transparent OLED display to deliver information with clear image quality while benefiting from high transparency to maintain a connection between people on both sides of the screen. As guests wait for their order, they can watch a movie or TV program, while at the same time viewing the chef preparing their food on the other side of the display. This innovative product naturally stands out more in the contactless era as it can not only act as a partition but also serve up some fun.

LG Display will additionally demonstrate how the company’s 55-inch Transparent OLED display can be applied to a subway train in a Metro Zone. While on board a virtual train carriage, passengers may look outside through the transparent display that has replaced a traditional window. Its high transparency enabled by OLED means passengers can still enjoy the passing scenery while viewing clear information such as subway line maps, weather information, and other news.

"Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the advantages of OLED and can be used in various places in our daily lives, from stores, shopping malls, and architectural interiors to autonomous vehicles, subway trains, and aircraft," said Jong-sun Park, Senior Vice President & Head of the Commercial Business Unit at LG Display. He added, "It will grow into a next-generation display that can change the existing display paradigm."

The company’s Transparent OLED realizes 40% transparency, providing clear image quality while being crystal clear like glass compared to the existing transparent LCD with only 10% transparency. With its superior transparency, Transparent OLED can be used in various fields such as smart homes, smart buildings, and mobility, including autonomous vehicles, aircraft, and subways. LG Display, the only transparent OLED manufacturer in the world, is seeing growing demand for Transparent OLED from these industries.

“Age of Titanium — Creation of the Future” National Titanium Industry Innovation and Start-up Competition 2020 Held in Panzhihua

From City of Steel to Capital of Vanadium and Titanium

CHENGDU, China, Dec. 30, 2020 — The "Age of Titanium — Creation of the Future" National Titanium Industry Innovation and Start-up Competition 2020, China’s first titanium-themed nationwide titanium industry innovation and start-up contest, was hosted by the Panzhihua Municipal People’s Government of Sichuan Province inside the Roadshow Hall of the Panzhihua Municipal Innovation and Start-up Olympic Center on December 26.

After the preliminary and secondary rounds, a total of 18 distinguished teams entered the final. Hailing from 12 provinces and municipalities, the finalists cover all Chinese regions involved in the titanium industry. A score of outstanding projects and technologies from the Chinese titanium industry participated in the competition, including those with innovative applications in the biomedicine, aerospace, marine engineering sectors and traditional titanium sponge smelting, casting and forging, which served to optimize Panzhihua’s existing industry foundation. After the final, project cooperation agreements were inked between Panzhihua and ten enterprises, which would lay a good basis to future development of Panzhihua’s titanium industry.

In recent years, Panzhihua has leaned on its rich vanadium and titanium resources and scientific and technological innovations to drive the growth of its vanadium and titanium industry. The city has risen as the country’s largest refined titanium ore supply base and the world’s number one vanadium product manufacturer, truly living up to its reputation as the Chinese capital of vanadium and titanium, and striving toward the goal of becoming a world-class vanadium and titanium industry base.

Green Development Philosophy Propels Transformation of the "City of Steel"

As one of China’s four major iron-producing regions, Panzhihua has a substantial amount of vanadium-titanium magnetite resources, including 7.18 billion tons of proven iron ore that accounts for 72.3% of proven iron ore reserve of Sichuan Province. Relying on its abundant mineral wealth, Panzhihua became well-known as one of southwestern China’s most important resource-driven industrial cities as early as the 1970s, and the steel industry thrived within a vast area around Panzhihua, which inspired its nickname the "City of Steel".

However, the extensive development in the early days was achieved at the cost of the ecological environment. In 2004, Panzhihua gained notoriety as "Ten Cities with Worst Air Quality in China," and the intensifying conflict between development and the environment compelled Panzhihua to make a stand and say no to pollution.

In the many years thereafter, Panzhihua committed more than RMB25 billion for environment protection and management, including over RMB12 billion from Panzhihua Iron and Steel (Pangang). A slew of measures were taken to address major sources of pollutants such as flue gas desulfurization from sintering machines, and the city was also the first in the nation to levy a far-reaching tax on water resource conservation. Economic and taxation means were also adopted to motivate enterprises to upgrade their technologies, adjust industrial structures and elevate the level of clean production.

In addition, Panzhihua was determined to stop deforestation and farmland reclamation, and strict laws were enacted to curtail illegal lumbering, land reclamation and forest destruction. Ecology restoration and large-scale greening endeavors were carried out to bolster the gravely weakened ecology of Jinsha River’s Dry-hot Valley, resulting in 62% forest coverage in the city.

Under a multi-pronged approach, Panzhihua saw remarkable improvement in the lushness of its mountains, clarity of its water and cleanliness of its air. Monitoring data shows that Panzhihua has consistently maintained good air quality more than 97% of the year for many consecutive years, while PM2.5 has been kept below 35 micrograms throughout the year. As a result, Panzhihua has emerged as one of China’s renowned city of sunshine and health preservation.

Scientific and Technological Innovations in Vanadium and Titanium Boost Industry Upgrade

During more than five decades of development, Panzhihua, a typical resource-driven city, has strived to maximize its resource advantage and oriented its vanadium and titanium industry toward the "advanced, refined, top-notch" orientation, thereby emerging as a Chinese success story in the comprehensive use of vanadium-titanium magnetite resources.

Well-endowed in vanadium-titanium magnetite resources, Panzhihua has the largest titanium reserve in the world, respectively accounting for 93% and 35% of the national and worldwide total. As the third-largest vanadium reserve region in the world, Panzhihua makes up 63% and 11% of the national and worldwide total respectively. Between 2016 and 2019, Panzhihua invested more than RMB5 billion for a series of worldwide tenders involving scientific and technological breakthroughs, which were conducive to accelerating major scientific and technological innovation projects such as blast furnace slag titanium extraction, vanadium-aluminum alloys for the space industry, titanium and titanium alloys for applications in aerospace, and so forth.

In recent years, these innovation projects have resulted in the successful research and development of more than ten state-of-the-art vanadium and titanium technologies and sophisticated products like vacuum continuous titanium coating and titanium alloy rehabilitation instrument, while several dozen vanadium and titanium high-precision casting products have found applications in cutting-edge industries. Panzhihua has ascended as the world’s foremost titanium product manufacturer and China’s number one titanium raw material producer, with capacity for the production of goods such as titanium material, titanium pipe, titanium wire and titanium powder. Panzhihua, listed as a National Strategic Resource Innovation Development Pilot Zone, has witnessed the establishment of the National-level Vanadium-titanium High-tech Zone and the National Committee for Vanadium-titanium Magnetite Comprehensive Usage Standardized Technology.

Pangang, built upon the vanadium-titanium magnetite resources, has transformed into the world’s top vanadium producer and China’s biggest titanium raw material and titanium processing enterprise after several decades of development. Particularly noteworthy is the 100-meter vanadium-containing steel rail manufactured by Pangang, the one and only top-tier steel rail that has won "national export inspection exemption" qualification. Due to its natural vanadium content, outstanding anti-corrosion and excellent durability, the signature product has been extensively utilized in national key programs and projects undertaken in cold and high-altitude areas such as the Beijing-Tianjin Hi-speed Railway and Qinghai-Tibet Hi-speed Railway, sold to more than 30 nations and regions across the globe, thereby driving Chinese hi-speed railway to reach world-class velocity.

Furthermore, relevant academic and technical talents introduced and cultivated also play crucial roles in the course of the transformation and upgrade of the Panzhihua vanadium and titanium industry. Contract was signed for the Panzhihua Vanadium and Titanium Industry Leading Talent Assembly and Breakthrough Plan — "Titanium and Its Composite Material Deep Processing and Surface Treatment Innovation Team" on May 22, 2020, which ushered in more possibilities for relevant human resources to showcase their expertise in the city.

In the future, response to its aspiration of becoming a world-class vanadium and titanium industry base, Panzhihua will rely on its Vanadium and Titanium New City and Panzhihua-Xichang Science and Technology City, make sufficient use of platform advantages such as its status as a National Strategic Resource Innovation Development Pilot Zone, maximize its mineral resources, well-established industrial support, unique industries and other strengths, so as to earn its place as a world-class vanadium and titanium industry base.

At the conference, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Sports Bureau signed strategic cooperation agreements with Fangchenggang Municipal Government, Beijing Liandong Investment (Group) Co., Ltd., and KAILAS Group to work closely to construct a healthy sports industry park, integrate sports and education, and enhance sports events operation, while striving to build a "new high land" for the development of the sports industry.

"Driving new sports consumption models with digital technologies and promoting the digitalization and intelligentization of the sports industry is an essential part of the high-quality development of the industry," said Li Changzhu, vice president of Huawei’s Consumer BG, at the conference.

"Technology changes our lives" is a well-known slogan. Science and technology are also crucial to sports. "As people are better aware of the importance of health, there is a growing demand for scientific sports and health management," Li added, and this has provided conditions conducive to the digital transformation of the sports industry.

At the opening ceremony, smart health equipment such as badminton robots, AR bicycles, and AR indoor rowers garnered great fanfare in the exhibition hall. Among them, AR bicycles features real-time online management of user’s riding data, and users can team up for training or online competitions via the built-in cycling game, which is an entertaining training exercise.

Bao Mingxiao, a professor at Beijing Sport University, holds the view that "technology and sports" can quantify exercise, and the accurate and diverse exercise data generated in real time by smart devices can be analyzed to develop a scientific way of doing exercise.

"After the epidemic, a growing number of people have realized that exercise is not only a ‘good medicine’, but also an innate fundamental ‘vaccine’ with great safe and long-lasting effectiveness," Bao said.

Justin Van Wyk, CEO of Big Concerts said: "This was an important moment for the events industry which has been devastated by the pandemic. Using the Health Passport Europe platform allowed this event to proceed with the highest levels of risk mitigation, demonstrating the way forward for live events globally. The system allowed us to offer pre- and post-event testing for maximum reassurance, protecting attendees, performers and everyone connected with the event."

Robert Quirke, founder of Health Passport Europe, said: "Our team is excited and humbled to have worked on this project for Cape Town and to have contributed to the safe reopening of international entertainment and tourism. The secure technology is engineered to work with all official COVID-19 tests and vaccinations. Many thousands of people are already using the mobile system and it is helping industries to return."

The Health Passport Europe platform has been adopted by many leading medical and pharmacy organisations that are providing COVID-19 testing services. The technology has passed all trials and development, having been extensively tested across a range of industries including healthcare, logistics, hospitality, education, and nursing homes, as well as a trial at Dublin Airport.

The process has already been engineered to safely test over 100,000 people within 10 hours, with the results, travel certificates or vaccination documents immediately uploaded within the person’s app.

The Health Passport Europe system has been engineered as a secure system for people to store and display their official COVID-19 vaccination or test status. It is a common international platform for all industries and the public.

Norway’s Pipeotech has taken gasket tightness to new microscopic levels by going atomic as it is supplying its guaranteed leak-proof DeltaV-Seal to ESS, the world’s most powerful neutron source, in Lund, Sweden.

The new research facility is one of the largest and most advanced technology infrastructure projects being built anywhere in the world today and it will enable a more powerful range of experiments using neutrons than previously possible, providing a significant step forward in the science of everyday life.

Advanced research requires advanced tools and Pipeotech’s unique DeltaV-Seal will play an important role in this exciting new development.

When producing neutrons for research in a spallation process, ionising radiation is generated. For this reason, safety is always the top priority at ESS, and first and foremost is to meet all the requirements and safety regulations set out by the regulatory authorities.

The incredible guaranteed tightness and durability of the DeltaV-Seal are vital components in the safe and efficient running of the key water-cooling system in the ESS target area, where the water will become activated in the neutron production process.

Ionising radiation can cause a high attrition rate in polymeric seals and the fact Pipeotech’s gasket can be made in the same stainless steel material as its surroundings negates all galvanic corrosion in such a sensitive environment.

The seal also arrives having been extensively tested and type-approved so its 10-year warranty is especially useful for ESS as it seeks to avoid disruption, downtime and costly maintenance at the facility.

Molecular detail

Neutrons have been used in scientific studies since the 1930s as they can penetrate deeper than X-rays and can be used to analyse different structures and functions within a material at an atomic or molecular level in a `soft’ way, meaning samples are not altered or damaged.

This opens the door to a wide range of study areas, including in the fields of life sciences, materials science, experimental physics, nano-technology, cultural heritage and pharmaceuticals. Research using neutrons is being used today in the world to study Covid-19.

Funding of the new multi-disciplinary research facility ESS is provided by 13 member countries organised as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium, with Sweden hosting the facility and Denmark the data management centre, which is located in Copenhagen.

Hundreds of scientists from across Europe have been working in collaboration on the concept and design of the new facility. Building work in Lund began in 2014 and when the research facility starts operating in 2023 it will deliver 20 times more sensitive instrument performance on average than the current leading neutron sources.

Around two to three thousand guest scientists and researchers will carry out experiments each year using this powerful new tool to analyse basic atomic structures and forces, leading to many potential break-through discoveries.

Accelerating progress

ESS in Lund will be the world’s brightest neutron source, and is based on the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built.

The process to generate neutrons at ESS starts in the accelerator’s ion source, where rapidly varying electromagnetic fields heat hydrogen gas to `boil off’ the electrons from the hydrogen molecules. Hydrogen is the simplest element of nature and consists only of protons and electrons, so when the electrons have evaporated a plasma of protons remains.

The protons are guided from the ion source into a series of various types of accelerator cavities, using magnets to steer the beam. The protons are accelerated to about 96% the speed of light using electromagnetic fields as they are directed through the 602.5-metre accelerator towards their target.

That target is a 4.9-tonne, 2.6-metre diameter rotating wheel made of 7,000 neutron-rich heavy metal tungsten bricks encased in stainless steel shielding. The high-speed protons collide with the tungsten and split the nuclei, kicking out high-energy neutrons in the process known as spallation.

Those neutrons are then slowed to the speed of sound and guided through a fan of up to 42 beam ports towards a range of 15 tailor-made instruments, where the samples to be studied are placed for data to be collected for analysis.

When the heat is on

The target area inside the monolith, which contains almost 6,000 tonnes of shielding, poses some serious engineering challenges as ionising radiation and large amounts of heat are produced when the protons collide with the wheel and split the tungsten nuclei.

The tungsten target itself is cooled using a flowing helium gas system to keep it below 500 degrees Celsius, but the stainless steel shielding and the surrounding components and instruments are also affected by heat and are required to be water cooled at between room temperature and 60 degrees Celsius.

The intention is for neutron production to run 24/7 for about 5,400 hours a year at the facility and so any unscheduled maintenance will cause significant disruption for the researchers.

Trusted

It is therefore essential that the pipes carrying the water-cooling system are leak-proof and resistant, so the seals employed must display state-of-the-art tightness and be guaranteed trustworthy.

The safety and verification requirements are set out by the regulatory body, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, and the components and materials used at ESS have to comply with these requirements in order for the facility to get the licence to operate.

It is important for ESS to have a seal delivered that already has been tested so rigorously and comes as type-approved with verification from classification society DNV GL.

Pipeotech’s DeltaV-Seal is a solid piece of metal made in the same material as the stainless steel piping surroundings so it is immune to galvanic corrosion and can resist ionising radiation as it is non-organic, giving peace of mind when installed in a sensitive closed system.

ESS sources its seals indirectly through a supplier and has chosen Pipeotech’s DeltaV-Seal for the water-cooling system in the most challenging area for gaskets in the whole facility.

Extreme tightness, reliability and durability are all key factors in why the ESS has chosen Pipeotech. Leaks are simply not acceptable in this environment. The DeltaV-Seal can deliver such guaranteed tightness, though it may not be able to stop the news of its unique properties from disseminating out to other industries.

Korea Institute For Robot Industry Advancement Foundation (KIRIA) Participates in the Online Exhibition of ‘SPS Connect 2020’ in Europe

DAEGU, South Korea and NUREMBERG, Germany, Dec. 18, 2020 — ‘SPS IPC Drives 2019’, which is Europe’s largest exhibition specializing in automation components, is held every year in Nuremberg, Germany. This year, it was held online for three weeks from November 16th to December 4th under the name ‘SPS Connect 2020’ due to the influence of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Korea Institute For Robot Industry Advancement Foundation (KIRIA) participated with five companies, SEINFLEX, ERAE-TECH, Global ZEUS, BONSYSTEMS, HIGEN MOTOR, to represent Korea in robot parts and finished products such as servomotor, reducer, and teach pendant. Through online business matching, a total of more than 20 consultations with genuine buyers were achieved, resulting in a consultation amount of about 1.6 million euros (approximately 2 billion won).

Although "SPS Connect 2020" was an online exhibition, 1,650 companies from around the world participated and more than 70,000 local buyers visited the exhibition. Among the participants were Europe’s largest automation and parts companies such as Siemens, Beckhoff Automation, Bosch Rexroth, and Leader Drives.
