Continuous 5G Evolution for Building an Engine of All-Industry Digitalization — Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless

SHANGHAI, Feb. 23, 2021 — At the 5G Advanced Summit hosted by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) during Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2021, Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless, delivered a keynote speech titled "Continuous 5G Evolution for Building an Engine of All-Industry Digitalization". In his speech, Dr. Tong emphasized that 5G must continuously evolve to build an engine of all-industry digitalization so as to satisfy the fast-growing consumer connections and diverse industrial applications.

5G Evolution Speech @ MWC 2021 by Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless
5G Evolution Speech @ MWC 2021 by Dr. Tong Wen, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless

5G development accelerates, driving 5G networks to improve performance

A new communication technology generally dominates for a decade, evolving to provide stronger capabilities, before being superseded by the next generation. In the past year, 5G has been evolving at a faster rate, showing its massive potential. The continuous improvement of experience in customer connections and enrichment of Internet of Things (IoT) services raise the requirements on connection capabilities. "The ever-increasing demand for wireless connections is the fundamental driving force to continuously advance mobile technologies," said Dr. Tong.

Therefore, 5G must constantly improve its capabilities. Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services are driving a significant upsurge in data demand, requiring 5G networks to increase capacity to guarantee premium experience. With the introduction of reduced capability (REDCAP), massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) services will be available on more terminals to fulfill the massive diverse IoT requirements. Ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services require networks to reduce transmission latency and provide latency-guaranteed connection services so as to meet the high-quality connection requirements of remote and programmable logic controller (PLC) control.

5G must expand its boundary of capabilities to open up a new space of business

As new applications keep emerging in the market, the three use cases originally defined in 5G need enhancement to meet diverse IoT service requirements. The boundary of 5G capabilities must be expanded to open up a new space of business.

Immersive interaction services are rapidly developing. 5G AR/VR has enabled superior virtual experience. With the rise of lightweight XR devices, 5G XR will also become a reality. This requires 5G to be further enhanced to deliver premium immersive experiences. 5G networks will be required to increase its average speed from 120 Mbps to 2 Gbps as high definition improves from 4K to 16K. To ensure real-time interaction in the virtual world, 5G must also further reduce transmission latency from the current 20 ms to 5 ms.

Uplink-centric networks are accelerating industrial digitalization. Currently, 5G applications are growing at an unprecedented rate, raising the requirements on uplink speeds. Various consumer AR/XR services require high-definition images and videos to be sent from local devices to clouds for further rendering. Remote control and machine vision in industrial applications also require real-time transfer of 4K and 8K videos. This will lead to a considerable increase in the proportion of uplink traffic over 5G networks to above 40%. To deal with such a huge amount of uplink traffic, 5G uplink capabilities must be improved by at least 10 times.

In addition, 5G must provide sensing capabilities to empower remote control, vehicle-road synergy, unmanned transportation, and smart logistics. For example, by introducing cellular Massive MIMO’s beam sweeping to sensing technologies, both sensing and communication, and even indoor high-precision positioning services, can be implemented through wireless technologies.

5.5G will become an engine of all-industry digitalization

Based on its abundant practices while helping realize the prospects in the mobile industry, Huawei has proposed 5.5G to contribute to exploring new applications, including uplink centric broadband communication (UCBC), real-time broadband communication (RTBC), and harmonized communication and sensing (HCS), with the aim to build an engine of all-industry digitalization.

"Both technology and business are essential to stimulate and promote the development of an industry. The mobile industry, the world’s largest wireless connection market, reaches trillions of US dollars every year," said Dr. Tong. "The accelerating integration of 5G with various industries will create a new market space worth more than US$10 trillion." Due to the lack of collaboration between the connection technologies of industrial services, the applications are often limited to just a single or several applications, far from a scaled effect. As a result, the market is worth just billions of US dollars. The continuous evolution of 5G will improve network capabilities and expand service scenarios, adding extra support for achieving the integration while reducing the cost of connections. This will help unleash the potential business opportunities worth over US$100 billion in the IoT industry.

"The innovation of technologies and applications will open up infinite possibilities for 5G evolution in the next decade," Dr. Tong concluded. "The wireless communications industry cannot achieve success without unified standards and industrial collaboration. Together, we should define 5G evolution and promote industrial collaboration to accelerate the maturity of technology and build a sustainable future with 5G."

Evermos, an Indonesian Social-Commerce Platform, Seeks to Add Fairer Economy Discussions to The Davos Agenda 2021

BANDUNG, Indonesia, Feb. 17, 2021 — As part of the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda 2021, Evermos, a West Java’s social-commerce platform for Indonesian Muslim products, Evermos, unveiled an article on helping Indonesian MSMEs increase their competitiveness. Evermos presented the paper at the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda 2021 held on January 25-29, 2021.

The current system discourages small Indonesian businesses from investing in growth. (photo: Evermos)

World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda 2021 was attended by world leaders, such as Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel; President of France, Emmanuel Macron; Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son; Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia. Muhammad Lutfi; and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi.

This year’s forum discussed world impact topics, including COVID-19’s effect on society and the economy, building a fairer economy, transcending geopolitical boundaries, the goodwill of technology, and new strategies to save the earth.

Among these topics, Indonesian SMEs’ economic rate drew particular attention at The Davos Agenda 2021 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.

The Davos Agenda 2021 highlighted several of the articles case studies, including an Evermos’ article about Mr. lyus, a hijab producer in Bandung, who experienced a significant growth from 2015-2017. During that time, Mr. lyus produced 150,000 headscarves per day. However, this later declined by 80%, resulting in reduced income for his employees.

A significant reason is a by-product of imports flooding the market, some of which are illegal. On average, a container of imported goods can contain around 250,000 to 450,000 headscarves.

Unfair trading practices in this sector have major implications for retailers like Mr. Iyus. He analysed how foreign manufacturers observe which products were in high demand, and within six months, they flooded the market with similar but cheaper products.

To increase his compete, Mr. Iyus had to innovate with a new winning product, and within 6 months, he quickly started production to get a profit. However, he noticed that his global competitors use marketing intelligence to gain an unfair advantage and shortened his winning product lifecycle. Due to time and capital constraints, Mr. Iyus is reluctant to expand his business. The situation has created a vicious cycle among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia.

Cheaper imported products have made SMEs’ reluctant to initiate medium -to long-term investments, causing low productivity and inefficient production; making them less competitive with global players.

This vicious cycle at the SMEs level creates another smaller vicious cycle, which impacts the welfare level of the workers. Low productivity of the SMEs then reduces their income, which in turn decreases the education level of their children. It later causes the next SMEs generation to experience skills shortages and low income as well.

Considering the long-term impact, people should start switching to buying local products, to increase money velocity and revive the local economy.

Arip Tirta, President of Evermos, said, "If we don’t buy local products, SMEs will lose against global value chains. Whenever we buy a local product, we help revive the economy by keeping money in circulation through product owners, vendors, employees, and other related parties. It keeps the economy flowing. Improvements in quality and experience are important, but more important is the need to support local producers and their endeavours."

SMEs have contributed support approximately 97% of employment in Indonesia, absorbing most low-skilled workers. They also contribute to over 60% of Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and have helped raise the quality of life by helping millions of people out of poverty.

Indonesia’s large and growing market presents opportunities to expand local production’s impact. However, there is a need to create more products’ in more significant quantities and more varieties. Something Indonesia is yet to do.

The next question: How can Indonesia break this vicious cycle? People need to focus on single links of the chain by doing any or all of the following:

  1. Go local or go home. Inspire people to buy local products, even though there are alternative cheaper products.
  2. Think long-term. Encourage SMEs to think of medium to long-term investment to remain globally competitive.
  3. Productivity as an engine for growth. Focus on skills training and technology adoption to increase productivity.
  4. The best offence is defence. Create effective trade policies to protect SMEs, with a more data-driven market intelligence approach.

If people can break this chain, Indonesia can create a virtuous cycle conducive to SMEs to think about medium and long-term growth. Productivity, efficiency, and higher profits will be made and strengthen local products’ global competitiveness.

Another approach is to create a significant breakthrough by breaking the cycle of our heavy reliance on SMEs and focusing on improving skilled workforce, while transforming them into high-skill workers.

A vicious cycle is difficult to stop, but it is not impossible if all players work together and fight for the SME’s welfare together as a country.

Nuix Tackles Remote Workforce Investigation and Discovery with Connectors for Microsoft 365

Latest product releases can retrieve and analyze evidence from cloud collaboration platforms, reducing the costs and risks of regulatory, legal, and internal investigations involving remote workers

HERNDON, Va., Feb. 3, 2021 — Global software company Nuix (www.nuix.com, ASX:NXL) today announced that the latest releases of the Nuix Engine and its flagship products can connect, collect, and analyze data from cloud collaboration platform Microsoft 365 including Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft OneDrive for Business. Customers conducting regulatory inquiries, legal matters, and internal investigations can collect collaboration data from the cloud and review and analyze it alongside evidence from email, business documents, corporate repositories, and mobile devices.

"The events of 2020 saw entire organizations switch to remote working with massive adoption of cloud collaboration platforms," said Rod Vawdrey, Group Chief Executive Officer of Nuix. "Nuix has worked hard to give customers critical insights into this data and allow them to integrate it into established workflows for compliance, legal, and forensic investigation so they can significantly reduce costs and risks."

The Nuix Engine connects directly to Microsoft 365 in the cloud, delivering a thorough and nuanced collection of the source data. After processing, Nuix customers can scrutinize and review this data in Nuix Workstation, Nuix Investigate®, and Nuix Discover® with a comprehensive suite of investigative analytics. Customers can then make that data accessible to compliance teams, legal review teams, and outside counsel while maintaining control of their valuable and sensitive information.

"Microsoft 365 presents unique challenges for retrieving data, including modern attachments, document versioning, and Microsoft Teams chats," said Stephen Stewart, Nuix’s Chief Technology Officer. "Once again, Nuix responds rapidly to customer needs, delivering solutions to the problems organizations face today and looking to the future.

"Our latest release gives customers accurate, defensible search results from Microsoft 365 alongside more than 1,000 other data sources and makes it available in formats that lawyers, investigators, and reviewers can easily understand and work with. They can review all the messages in private or public conversations and understand the communication links between people, all as part of their existing investigative workflows."

Nuix will demonstrate its products’ new capabilities at the Legalweek(year) 2021 virtual trade show and by request. For more information, visit https://events.nuix.com/industry-events/legalweekyear-2021.
