The discussions – ranging from the usefulness of ancient wisdom in a modern context to digital archaeology and inclusive archaeology – reflected the ambition of the summit. With its four broad themes of identity, ruinscapes, resilience and accessibility, the summit generated interdisciplinary conversations that moved beyond the specialist mindset in order to promote archaeology to wider audiences.

Abdulrahman Alsuhaibani, Executive Director of Archaeology, Conservation and Collections at the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), said: “This summit was exceptional. It was unique. We discussed topics vital to the future of archaeology with a broader perspective – and I hope we continue the discussion.”

Organised by RCU, the summit included 327 attendees from 39 countries, 80+ speakers, 50 youth delegates participating in the Future Forum, representation from 167 institutions including 65 universities, and a gender ratio of  47% female to 53% male.

The summit’s final day featured the announcement of a new prize for young archaeologists. The AlUla World Archaeology Summit Award of Excellence is to be awarded at future summits and will promote the science of archaeology, Dr Alsuhaibani said. More details will be announced later.

The summit showcased AlUla’s position as a hub of archaeological activity. RCU is sponsoring one of the world’s largest archaeological research programmes across AlUla and Khaybar, with 12 current surveys, excavations and specialist projects. Rich cultural landscapes are being revealed, including funerary avenues, mustatils, ancient cities, inscriptions in 10 languages, rock art and complex agricultural practices. AlUla is the site of Hegra, which in 2008 was inscribed as Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The summit offered delegates a platform for advancing archaeology and cultural heritage management in their interface with other disciplines. This gathering of leaders from academia, government, non-government organisations, industry, and young people representing the next generation of archaeologists was created to not only enrich the archaeological community and help protect shared history but also to open up a larger reflection of what and how archaeology, and more broadly cultural heritage, can contribute to transformational changes in society.

The summit’s Future Forum provided a platform for young people to engage in meaningful dialogue and debate about the future of archaeology. It offered a space for them to develop their own perspectives and ideas and contribute to the conversation in fundamental ways.

CGTN: Regional economic integration promotes China-ASEAN common prosperity

BEIJING, Sept. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Themed “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,” the 43rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit concluded on Friday in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a series of positive outcomes.

Deepening ASEAN-China cooperation would benefit people on both sides, said Secretary-General of ASEAN Kao Kim Hourn on Thursday.

Regional economic integration

Addressing the 26th China-ASEAN Summit on Wednesday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang urged China and the ASEAN countries to enhance connectivity, deepen cooperation on industrial and supply chains, strive to complete in 2024 the negotiations on the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) 3.0 and steadily advance regional economic integration.

During the 26th ASEAN Plus Three Summit, Li noted that in June this year, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) entered into full effect, which brought new opportunities for regional economic integration.

“We need to further bring out the potential of the agreement, boost the free flow of factors, and expand and upgrade our trade and investment. We need to advance our comprehensive, mutually beneficial and high-quality economic partnership, and move toward an integrated regional market that is more open and vibrant,” he said.

China has proposed to accelerate ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0 Upgrade Negotiations and strives to conclude negotiations in 2024, according to a list of China’s cooperation initiatives for the ASEAN-related summits.

The Version-3.0 China-ASEAN FTA will bring tangible benefits to local residents, said Shi Zhongjun, secretary-general of the ASEAN-China Center, adding that the unilateralist, protectionist policies pursued by some countries outside the region have had certain impact on cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, including that between China and ASEAN.

Belt and Road cooperation

During the 26th China-ASEAN Summit, a joint statement was issued on mutually beneficial cooperation between the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

China welcomes the active participation of ASEAN countries in the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, Li said on Wednesday.

Under the BRI cooperation framework, China and ASEAN have enhanced cooperation on infrastructure and regional cooperation.

The ChinaLaos railway had made a total of 20.09 million passenger trips as of April 16, with the section of the railway within China handling 17.09 million passenger trips and that outside China handling three million passenger trips since it went into operation in December 2021, according to data from China Railway.

The Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, a BRI flagship project in Cambodia, has become the Southeast Asian country’s largest industrial zone, accommodating up to 175 factories so far.

Fruitful cooperation results

During the China-ASEAN Summit, a series of outcome documents were adopted, including a joint statement on deepening agricultural cooperation between China and ASEAN, an action plan on China-ASEAN green agricultural development (2023-2027), an initiative on enhancing bilateral e-commerce cooperation and an initiative on jointly implementing a China-ASEAN science and technology innovation enhancement program.

Data from China’s Ministry of Commerce showed that the trade volume between China and ASEAN reached $975.3 billion in 2022, up 11.2 percent year on year and surging by 120 percent from the level of 2013.

As of the end of July, the cumulative two-way investment exceeded $380 billion, and China had set up more than 6,500 enterprises with direct investment in ASEAN.

The past decade also saw ASEAN become China’s top trading partner in 2020, surpassing the European Union and the U.S.

“Looking ahead, I think ASEAN-China bilateral trade will increase three fold in the next 20 years, and the investment will increase accordingly,” said Djauhari Oratmangun, Indonesian ambassador to China.

CGTN:”The Art Beat” Season II- Eight Artists Offer Fresh Takes on the China Story

BEIJING, Aug. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Art Beat Season II premiered on CGTN television and various social media platforms on August 21. Each of its eight episodes focuses on the life and work of a different leading contemporary Chinese artist. Produced in multiple languages, it describes how their art tells China’s story from a cultural perspective.

Through an examination of their personal philosophies and their original paintings, performances and writings, the series reveals how, emboldened by the inspiration and strength they have gained from Chinese traditions, each artist has embraced innovation and taken his or her chosen art form into new areas of exploration.

Renowned artist Wu Yueshi believes that the essence of Chinese painting is found in the spiritual aspect of the whole. Only through deep cultivation is it possible to master subtlety of expression and gradually gain an insight into the profound and vast realm of Chinese art.

“Read, then paint” is the motto of Liu Wanming, an artist who is committed to depicting nature in the spirit of traditional Chinese painting. His love of reading, he says, has enabled him to bring an additional dimension of ancient charm to his paintings of the scenery of his hometown.

As an artist constantly seeking innovation, Shi Qi proposes the concept of “Three Forms in One”. The duality of representation and abstraction, he says, is incomplete. Rather, the trio of representation, impression and abstraction offer a fuller picture, defining both life and artistic creation.

“Art is a lifestyle that makes me happy,” says He Jialin, a painting master with a wide range of artistic interests. He believes in cultivating patriotism through his work and promoting traditional Chinese culture. In recent years, he has visited many ancient villages in China, determined to preserve the fading cultural heritage of these communities.

Ballet dancer Feng Ying’s career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of excellence and artistic expression. Persistent and dauntless, she has overcome various difficulties and ascended to the very pinnacle of her profession. Today, as the director of the National Ballet of China, she remains as committed as ever to her art.

“Audiences should be glued to their seats, listening intently to your every word,” says pingshu artist Tian Lianyuan. On stage, he uses just three everyday objects as props to tell his story – a fan, a wooden block and a handkerchief. Yet he manages to conjure “a life story, a historical drama” in which the audience become immersed in thousands of years of history and vast landscapes populated by vivid characters.

As the youngest recipient of the Mao Dun Literature Prize,Alai says he was destined to write. As a writer, he keenly evokes moments of excitement, confusion and pain without ever losing his sense of contemplation. “Humans are both the starting point and the destination,” he says.

“Using broad strokes and big ink blocks to bring a three-dimensional effect to the paper,” has been the defining approach of Zhou Jingxin. In 1995, he debuted a series of paintings that introduced a brand new style: “Ink Sculpture”. He firmly believes that traditional Chinese painting is consistent with the concept of three-dimensionality.

Those who walk toward the downpour and the frontrunners in disaster

BEIJING, Aug. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from China.org.cn on China’s disaster relief:

“We just moved in our newly renovated apartment a month ago. (It’s all ruined now) We’re absolutely devastated.”

“I’ll give you brand new furnishing free of charge.” “I’ll paint your walls for free.” “Give me the measurements of your cabinets…”

These words come from a video posted by a netizen from Zhuozhou, Hebei province and the replies in the comment section. Heavy rain caused by Typhoon Doksuri that lasted nearly two weeks resulted in flood, which damaged her new apartment. While human efforts seem inconsequential in the face of natural disasters, the will of people have proven otherwise.

We’ve seen —

Those who walk toward the tempest head-on: The firemen and rescue team members who came to Beijing and Zhuozhou from all over China, treated every rescue as a battle. They munched bread in the rain, worked hand in hand to form a “human rope” so that they can help trapped residents out from thigh-deep water; they trudged for four hours in heavy downpour to deliver supplies to people stuck in paralyzed trains… “No.23 (Wang Hongchun), put on that ring buoy!” This is the last sentence heard from Wang Hongchun and Liu Jianmin, the two Blue Sky Rescue members who sacrificed their lives in Beijing’s flood rescue efforts.

There are also frontrunners in the relief effort who made many sacrifices to help disaster victims. Xiong Li, a grassroot official from Mentougou District in Beijing died in the flood while inspecting the flood-stricken places, at a young age of 36. CPC Party members at Shawo Village, Matou Town in Zhuozhou stayed committed to their responsibilities: Some had given up sleep for over three days, busy helping villagers, some waded door to door to help residents escape, and some left even their own families behind. Train K1178 which was headed for Beijing, was stuck for over 40 hours at Yanhecheng Station. All the crew members set aside supplies for passengers, trying to comfort them. The whole crew hadn’t eaten anything for up to 20 hours, and the staff from the station had given them everything they had left – two bags of flour.

We have also seen small sparks that light up the whole sky. When people from one place are in need, help from various places come along. The disaster-stricken places were in dire need for transportation, so taxi drivers volunteered to pool their resources and offer support. Many warehouses of book companies were flooded, so many book-lovers from across China contributed their bit to help these companies through the hard times. Many ordinary citizens bought food supplies, and put up a pot to make noodles for flood victims as well as rescue crews.

Confronted with natural disasters, “helping others”, an already noble gesture, only becomes even more valuable. It embodies how people cherish the lives of their own kind, and stands for trust, selflessness and righteousness.

In the Chinese myth “Nvwa Butian, (Goddess Nvwa mends the sky)” a hole was poked in the sky, giving rise to heavy rain. After the hole was mended by a five-colored stone, the rain stopped, and the flood receded. Now, while the heavy rain rages, we hope the “five-colored” stone made up of the love of Chinese people, would eventually mend the poked sky.

New Study by Scientists at La Brea Tar Pits Finds Extinction of Ice Age Mammals Linked to Climate Change, Humans, and Fire

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Large-scale wildfires in an ecosystem made fire-prone by climate change caused the disappearance of saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and other large mammals in southern California nearly 13,000 years ago, according to a new study by researchers at La Brea Tar Pits.

Published in the journal Science, the peer-reviewed study breaks new ground in a decades-long scientific debate over what triggered the Earth’s last major extinction. Supported by the precise dating of fossils preserved at La Brea Tar Pits, the research advances our understanding of the dynamics between dramatic environmental change, human population growth, wildfire activity, and the abrupt disappearance of Ice Age megafauna.

“The significance of this research will resonate for decades well beyond the scientific field,” said Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County. “La Brea Tar Pits is the only place on Earth that has the fossil record necessary to examine the last significant climate change event in this way. The site’s collection of millions of Ice Age fossils provides a unique opportunity to study environmental change.

The study laid out a disastrous chain of ecological events reconstructed from climate, vegetation, and fire records preserved in the sediments of nearby Lake Elsinore. It started with the gradual warming and drying of the landscape and a simultaneous decline in forest-adapted large herbivores over 2,000 years, as Earth emerged from the last Ice Age and glaciers receded. Then, just as human populations began to sharply increase in North America, the ecosystem underwent a dramatic change: temperatures rose rapidly, a 200-year-long drought parched the landscape, and massive wildfires transformed plant communities. Within 300 years, all the Ice Age giants at La Brea were gone, and California’s modern, fire-adapted chaparral ecosystem had appeared.

Understanding the relationship between environmental change and human activity is equally important to current-day challenges, the study said. It noted that temperatures in Southern California have risen faster in the last century than they did during the late Pleistocene. Land area burned by wildfire in the western U.S. has increased four-fold in the past 20 years, and this pattern is only predicted to worsen in coming years.

Wushu lovers, do you really get Wushu?

BEIJING, Aug. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A news report by China.org.cn on Chinese Wushu:

The Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games has come to a successful closure. In retrospect, we could see that the event depicting the most vivid Chinese characteristics is the Wushu (martial arts) event. Wushu masters from all over the world stepped into the arena against Chinese-style background music, donning splendid traditional Chinese attires, and bringing their best game like high-spirited heroes. Nanquan (Southern fist), Taijiquan (Taichi Chuan), Wushu Sanda (martial arts free fighting) … The electrifying routines of these athletes seem to have brought audiences into a wuxia world appropriated by popular Chinese fiction and film, presenting the charm of Chinese Wushu.

In fact, just like combat sports from other countries, the art of Wushu could be traced to prehistoric times when it was practiced as a form of combat. However, the features of Chinese culture endowed Wushu with unique “charisma” and traits.

Traditional Chinese culture was deeply rooted in agrarian civilization. Several millennia ago, Chinese ancestors observed celestial movements and the sundry geographies on this vast land, and perceived that the universe and everything in it formed a dialectical relationship, a philosophy that makes humanity and nature at one. On such philosophical soil sprouted Chinese Wushu.

The elements of Taijiquan, including motion and stillness, emptiness and fullness, opening and closing, capture the interplay of the universe’s yin and yang binary. In China, when martial arts practitioners compete with each other, they abide by the notions of “skilled competition over power tussle” and “refrain from causing actual harm.” During a fight-off, one would answer high moves with lower moves, respond to speed with slower motions, and repay strength with softness, which are, in a nutshell, the embodiment of the Confucian philosophy of “harmony in diversity,” one that tends to convert any discordancy to harmony. Therefore, the essence of Chinese Wushu lies in oppressing violence and aiding the weak, instead of fueling the belligerent or bullying the powerless. “Truly great martial arts are against violence, and genuine combats are not about fighting,” the idiom expresses the gist of Chinese Wushu.

Wushu has developed over millennia, deriving many genres. Weapons like dao (broadsword), jian (sword), gun (cudgel) and qiang (spear) are used, and there are also barehanded Wushu genres like Taijiquan, Xingyiquan and Yongchunquan (Wing Chun), all of which embody the philosophy of harmony and togetherness.

China Mosaic hasn’t introduced any specific Chinese culture for you in a long time. Today we’re talking about Chinese Wushu because it is a beloved topic of many international friends, among whom many wonder if it’s true that every Chinese knows Kungfu? Here’s the thing: Not every one of us has learned Wushu or knows Kungfu. But, Wushu is indeed an epitome of the overarching Chinese mindset. The traditional cultural elements that find themselves in Wushu shape the Chinese people in many ways, while influencing the ideas and values that China adheres to when interacting with other parts of the world.

When youngsters from all around the globe learn and perform Wushu, they are actually in a process of understanding Chinese culture and approaching the Chinese people. Nurturing one’s soul and cultivating one’s character, making more friends, while pursuing the shared beauty of harmony through Wushu, is a culture that originates from China but belongs to the world.

Why green has become the theme color for China-hosted sporting events?

BEIJING, Aug. 4, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from China.org.cn on the green sporting events that China hosts:

In the blazing summer heat, a gentle breeze will greet you as you walk into the delegation service center of the Chengdu FISU Games’ Village. However, such coolness does not come from air conditioning. Architects drew experience from China’s traditional architectural design “leng xiang,” meaning “cold alley”, and designed the hall into a semi-open passage that features two wide ends and a relatively narrow corridor in the middle. Such layout channels in natural wind which accelerates ventilation and cools down the environment. This smart design could save electricity enough for up to twenty households to live a year.

At the currently ongoing Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, there are more designs that embody the same philosophy as the cold alley. For example, in the water polo venue — the Xiangcheng Sports Center, roofs, pavements and landscaping are all designed to help gather rainfall into the underground collector, where the rainwater could be processed and reused for watering landscaping. This process can save as much as 3,000 tons of water per year. In Dong’an Lake Sports Park, a “forest” of submerged plants that are hardy and alkaline tolerant thrive at the bottom of the lake. These plants supply enough oxygen in the lake, which helps with the biodiversity in this underwater ecosystem. With better water quality and improved ecology in the lake, freshwater jellyfish, a rare animal that demands premium water bodies, were spotted in the lake.

While “green” is the theme color of these grand designs, the philosophy of low-carbon and eco-friendly are also reflected in many details: The blue and white “low-carbon magic cubes” allow people to trade in recyclable waste like empty bottles and used paper cups for “carbon credits,” which could be exchanged for gifts once a certain threshold is hit, an act that incentivizes people to lead a low-carbon life. On the bottled water provided to all the athletes and staff, a special “mark-up” area was printed on the labels, to prevent water waste resulting from people not knowing which bottles belonged to them and throwing them away.

What’s worth noting is that, the 300 or so chairs in the press release rooms of the Universiade’s Main Media Center went through a long journey — they are rented from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics MMC. This low-profile interaction of the two sporting events echoes again with the buzzwords “green” and “sustainable,” principles adhered to by China for years when hosting sporting events.

Last year, the Beijing Winter Olympics achieved 100% carbon neutrality, where all venues were powered by 100% renewable energies; during the preparation for the games, the valuable wildlife leopard cats were captured multiple times in the Alpine Skiing Center, bearing proof to the fruit of the eco-environmental protection efforts. The upcoming Asian Games will also see this green trend live on.

Hosting “green games” has become a natural undertaking for China’s event committees. Innovative technologies empower sustainable development, which guarantees the consistent application of low-carbon philosophy in day-to-day life, not just during sporting events. With sporting events as platforms, sustainable and environment-friendly facilities are in place, which encourages citizens to continue low-carbon lifestyles. A single event can spearhead a city, sometimes even a country in becoming “greener.”

As more sporting events are hosted in China under the theme of “green,” the philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature is becoming the status-quo bit by bit.
