Health and social care to gain the most from 5G productivity and efficiency gains, which will add US$1.3trillion to global GDP by 2030

New analysis of 5G – the next generation of mobile connectivity – estimates the impact of new and existing applications.

Over half the global economic impact (US$530bn) will be driven by the transformation of health and social care within the next ten years; a quarter by smart utilities driving savings in energy, water and waste management.

Large manufacturing-based economies are likely to gain the most, including the United States (USA), China and Japan, but gains are projected globally as 5G integrates as a critical part of societal infrastructure.

Transparency is critical to building trust with consumers and regulators 5G’s application.

LONDON, Feb. 8, 2021 — Productivity and efficiency gains enabled by 5G’s application will drive business, skills and service change worth US$1.3 trillion to global GDP by 2030.

In Powering Your Tomorrow, PwC quantifies for the first time, the economic impact of new and existing uses of 5G in utilities, health and social care, consumer, media, and financial services across eight economies with advanced rollout: Australia, China, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, USA and the United Kingdom (UK).

More than a faster version of mobile connectivity on 4G, 5G’s speed, reliability, reduced energy usage and massive connectivity will be transformative for businesses and wider society, enabling ubiquitous access to super fast broadband. Used in combination with investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT), 5G can be used as a platform to enable business and society to realise the full benefits of emerging technology advances.

Economic gains are projected across all economies assessed in the study, as 5G offers the potential to rethink business models, skills, products and services, with the gains accelerating beginning in 2025 as 5G-enabled applications become more widespread

Based on the study, the USA (US$484bn), China (US$220bn) and Japan (US$76bn) will experience the largest uplift as a result of 5G technology applications, due to the size of their economies and strong modern industrial production sectors.

At a regional level Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) is expected to benefit the most from manufacturing applications of 5G, due to the size of the manufacturing sectors. It demonstrates the potential for regional competitive advantage through approaches to the adoption and regulation of the technology.

Wilson Chow, Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications Industry Leader, PwC China, comments:
"These numbers quantify impact, but perhaps more important, our study reflects the value of 5G – new levels of connectivity and collaboration mean companies will be able to see, do and achieve more. It will open up new opportunities for growth and change as organisations rethink and reconfigure the way they operate in the post-pandemic world.

"With the pandemic accelerating digitalisation across all sectors, 5G will act as a further catalyst. It will emerge in this decade as a fundamental piece of our societal infrastructure and as a platform for driving the competitiveness of national economies, new business models, skills and industries."

Achieving better, faster outcomes in health and social care

Over half the global economic impact (US$530bn) will be driven by the transformation of health and social care experience for patients, providers and medical staff within the next ten years.

While the acceleration of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic provided a glimpse of the future of healthcare, remote care is just one area in which 5G can enable both better health outcomes and cost savings.

5G’s applications include remote monitoring and consultations, real time in-hospital data sharing, improved doctor-patient communications and automation in hospitals to reduce health care costs.

Regional & Sector impacts

At a sector level, impacts vary for individual economies. The USA and Australia are projected to gain the most from financial services applications: India from smart utilities; China and Germany in manufacturing.  Other industries analysed in the study show the significant potential of new and existing applications over the next decade, driving changes in skills, jobs, consumer products and regulation:

  • SMART utilities management applications will support environmental targets to reduce carbon and waste through enabling combined smart meters and grids to deliver energy savings, and improving waste and water management through tracking of waste and water leakage (US$330bn).
  • Consumer and media applications include: over the top (OTT) gaming, real time advertising and customer services (US$254bn)
  • Manufacturing and heavy industry applications include: monitoring and reducing defects, increased autonomous vehicle use (US$134bn)
  • Financial services applications including reducing fraud and improving customer experiences (US$86bn)

Wilson Chow comments:
"5G is more than mobile connectivity. It puts a new lens on advancing productivity and rethinking entire business models for the future. Given the scale of potential and its impacts, every organisation will need a plan for 5G’s implementation within five years across technology and business strategies to maximise opportunities and prepare for how they integrate their technology and business strategies, and engage with customers, supply chain and regulators."

Policy & Trust
The study highlights that the reach of 5G’s technology potential will require businesses and government to consider new approaches to regulatory and consumer engagement – focusing on how the technology is used.

Wilson Chow comments:
"With any technology, policy engagement, transparency and public trust are critical factors. Whether it’s considering the use of self driving vehicles or telemedicine, how data is managed, infrastructure deployed, or how different sectors collaborate, business and government need to shit from focusing on regulating a technology, to promoting transparency in 5G’s application, building and sustaining public trust in its use and potential."

About the report

PwC drew on expert insight and using economic modeling, to examine the impact of 5G’s use across five industries. The projections in this study represent the net economic impact of 5G technology, taking into account displacement effects such as some economic activities becoming obsolete and focusing on economic value added across value chains and throughout the economy, rather than only the revenues of 5G telecoms businesses. Further details on the methodology can be found here.

Recognized for their respective efforts to advocate for peaceful resolution to conflict and advocacy of values outlined in the Document on Human Fraternity, both UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Moroccan-French activist, Latifa Ibn Ziaten, were presented as the two honorees of the 2021 award.

Anchored around the picturesque setting of the Founder’s Memorial, in Abu Dhabi, the awards ceremony included the acceptance speeches of the two honorees, along with messages from Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr Ahmed Al-Tayeb.

With the award inspired by the UAE’s founder and his lifelong commitment to humanitarian values, the Founder’s Memorial was a perfect backdrop to a truly moving, visual experience. With the ceremony online, viewers from all over the world are able to tune in to join in the celebrations and watch the honorees accept their award.

In his goodwill message to both 2021 honorees, His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, said:

"Firstly, I must begin by saying that His Holiness Pope Francis has been a courageous brother and constant friend on the path of fraternity and peace. Such efforts have seen the United Nations General Assembly adopting the anniversary of the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity, February 4th,  to be the International Day of Human Fraternity, which will now encourage universal support in pursuing the spread the intercultural dialogue, co-existence, and human fraternity. This is a victory for human dignity everywhere.

"I also extend my greetings and blessings to His Excellency Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as an honoree of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity. It is clear that his wide-range of humanitarian efforts exerted through the UN have sought to rid humanity of the sufferings of conflicts, and ease the negative effects of the pandemic."

"Joint 2021 honoree, Latifa Ibn Ziaten is a rare role model for the world. Her generosity of spirit and steadfastness in her ability to transform personal suffering into a message of security and safety for all, is a victory for all humanity and a reminder of the good that is always capable of defeating the forces of evil."

Addressing the event from The Vatican, Pope Francis spoke of the importance of human fraternity as the 21st century’s key challenge, saying:

"To the Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, I thank for the companionship during this journey of reflection and the writing of the Document [on Human Fraternity]. I know it wasn’t an easy task but together we helped each other, consolidating in true fraternity.

"Today, fraternity is the new frontier of humanity. Either we are brothers or we destroy ourselves. It is the challenge of our century; the challenge of our time. Human Fraternity means respect, to listen with an open heart, and to have strength in our principles.

"Born from the same father, with different cultures and traditions, we are all still brothers; and respecting our different cultures and traditions, our different citizenships, we must build this fraternity not negotiate it. It is time to listen and for sincere acceptance."

The Secretary-General of the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity, and contributing author to the Document on Human Fraternity, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, added:

"On this day of celebration for human fraternity, we are indeed honored to have received the support of two of the world’s most influential world leaders and previous honorees of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, united with a common message and purpose – to advance humanity as one family, undivided.

"The 2021 honorees – Latifa Ibn Zaiten and UN Secretary-General Guterres – are truly representative of the values championed in the Document on Human Fraternity, which forms the assessment criteria for the award. Indeed, their respective efforts to address some of the world’s key socio-cultural and political issues are an inspiration to all and role models for many who will also heed the call to act."

Marking the second anniversary since the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity by the Pope and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, in Abu Dhabi, the International Day of Human Fraternity was introduced by the UN General Assembly, in December 2020; the date chosen to commemorate the historic meeting of the Pope and Grand Imam, at the document’s signing, in 2019.

In addition to the awards ceremony and as part of the wider celebrations of the first International Day of Human Fraternity, several key landmarks in both The Vatican and Abu Dhabi will be lit up on Thursday evening.

Aniview Partners with White Ops to Fend Off Sophisticated Bot Attacks and Safeguard the Integrity of Video Advertising

Partnership Delivers New Avenue for Publishers and Advertising Networks to Protect their Inventory with White Ops Advertising Integrity via Aniview’s Platform

SINGAPORE, Feb. 4, 2021 — Aniview, a leading provider of holistic end-to-end ad-serving solutions for publishers, announced a new partnership with White Ops, the global leader in collective protection against sophisticated bot attacks and fraud. Aniview’s platform will fully integrate the White Ops Advertising Integrity solution to help optimize protection and ensure its customers’ safety from malicious and sophisticated cybersecurity risks. As a result of this partnership, publishers and advertising networks have another avenue by which they can access White Ops protection for their inventory.

The most common types of video fraud occur when malicious fraudsters misrepresent their display units as video inventory in programmatic exchanges. These sophisticated bots are deployed through malware embedded in software, essentially performing device-hijacking on a mass, organized scale. With the significant dangers ad fraud poses to the video supply chain, safety has become an increasingly critical issue and, as such, dangers are being met with innovative solutions.

White Ops recently became the first company to receive accreditation from the Media Rating Council (MRC) for end-to-end coverage against Sophisticated Invalid Traffic (SIVT) for desktop, mobile web, mobile in-app, and Connected TV (CTV). Working directly with the largest internet platforms, DSPs, and exchanges, White Ops verifies the humanity of more than 10 trillion digital interactions per week. With White Ops Advertising Integrity, platforms can tap into the most comprehensive pre-bid prevention and post-bid detection capabilities to verify the validity of advertising efforts across all channels. The White Ops Fraud Mitigation Platform uses a multilayered detection methodology to spot and stop sophisticated bots and fraud by using technical evidence, continuous adaptation, machine learning, and threat intelligence.

With this partnership, Aniview and its customers can leverage White Ops’ privacy-sensitive detection technology to identify threats and automated fraud attempts, ensuring their advertising inventory can be trusted and fraud-free. White Ops provides a deeper granular understanding of bot interactions and activity patterns to save time and money. Aniview is now able to provide its clients an effective solution to identify and prevent malicious video-bot traffic. This partnership represents the next step in Aniview’s mission to provide verified traffic and protection against video ad fraud.

Aniview’s end-to-end ad-serving solution includes a patented video ad-player, mobile apps SDK, seamless header bidding integration, high-performance ad-server, marketplace, CTV/OTT dynamic auction, and Server-side Ad Insertion (SSAI). Together, these components, coupled with the company’s machine-learning optimization algorithm, enable its users to manage, track, and monetize video content. Unlike other solutions, Aniview allows for customizable ad units alongside real-time yield optimization and currently services more than 10 billion video ad impressions each month. In September, the company was awarded the TAG Certified Against Fraud Seal, from the Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG).

"The boom of online video content in recent years has created an urgency for us to fully secure and protect customers against a rising tide of ad fraud," says Roy Cohen, CTO of Aniview. "Working with White Ops and our internal fraud detection tools, we will develop greater application integrity by identifying and blocking bot traffic with the highest degree of accuracy and speed to stay ahead of adversaries."

"Fighting fraud and abuse in digital advertising requires a collective approach to protect the industry against sophisticated threats," says Ellie Windle, Vice President, Global Strategic Partnerships and Alliances at White Ops. "We’re excited to join together with Aniview in the optimization of fraud-free video advertising solutions. This partnership strengthens our presence in digital video while providing easier access to our platform for publishers and networks. The more partners that we have in this fight, the bigger our knowledge base grows and the better we can optimize our tactics against potential new threats from bad actors."

About Aniview

Founded in 2013, Aniview provides a full ecosystem for managing video and video advertisements through its patented technology. Our goal is to change the video advertising landscape and have premium publishers, networks, and advertisers globally use our suite of products and enjoy an end-to-end solution. Annie Grace Offers Advice for Tackling FebFest

"This Naked Mind" author shares gentle wisdom and insight

DENVER, Feb. 1, 2021 — Taking a break from something that isn’t good for you is always a good idea. Even better when you can raise money for an important cause at the same time. In asking people to abstain from alcohol for a month and raise money for disadvantaged youth, FebFest does both.

Annie Grace, author of "This Naked Mind" and "The Alcohol Experiment"
Annie Grace, author of "This Naked Mind" and "The Alcohol Experiment"

For some, the energy behind the importance of the fundraising mission will be enough to sustain their commitment to remaining alcohol free. For others, losing the booze will be more difficult.

"Starting a month-long challenge to abstain from alcohol is exciting and empowering," says Annie Grace, author of This Naked Mind and The Alcohol Experiment. "But, it can also be daunting. If alcohol is typically part of your daily life, removing it can be difficult. And, relying on willpower alone to drive your success can make it even harder."

Annie Grace offers the following advice to anyone taking a break from alcohol:

Be Kind – First and foremost, meet yourself with compassion, right where you are. Remember, alcohol is an addictive substance. It’s OK if abstaining is hard. There is nothing wrong with you.

Buddy Up – Don’t go it alone. There is strength in numbers. Find an accountability partner or even an entire community of people on the same journey. Support and learn from each other.

Get Curious – Don’t ignore alcohol this month. Rather, use the break to truly explore your relationship with alcohol. Learn how alcohol interacts with your brain and why simply flexing your willpower muscle might not be enough.

Write It Down – Document your experience in a journal. How do you feel? What was hard? What was easy? What did you notice about yourself without alcohol? What makes you want to drink?

Don’t Quit – If you slip and have a drink, try again. Even though it’s meant to be a month of abstinence, you do not have to declare defeat. Keep going. Do the best you can.

No matter why someone decides to participate in an alcohol free month, ultimately the best thing about their choice is the opportunity they give themselves to learn more about who they are both with and without the substance and determine what role they want alcohol to play in their lives in the future.

About This Naked Mind
Founded by Annie Grace in 2015, This Naked Mind (TNM) helps people end the conflict between their desire to drink less and their unconscious belief that alcohol is beneficial. Annie Grace overcame a decade of drinking by revamping her own relationship with alcohol. Today she helps others across the globe do the same – the 200,000+ people who’ve bought her books, the 350,000+ people who receive daily emails from her, the listeners who’ve downloaded her This Naked Mind Podcast episodes more than 8 million times, and the 200,000+ people who’ve gone through her free program, The Alcohol Experiment. Rather than teaching people how to be sober, TNM takes away the desire to drink. And, the approach helps people where rehabs have not. Join TNM on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.

A new ranking by MIT Technology Review Insights highlights the countries making the fastest progress to a low-carbon future

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 26, 2021The Green Future Index, a new study by MIT Technology Review Insights in association with Citrix, Morgan Stanley, and Salesforce ranks 76 countries and territories on the progress and commitment they are making toward a green future by reducing carbon emissions, developing clean energy, and innovating in green sectors, as well as the degree to which governments are implementing effective climate policies.

(PRNewsFoto/MIT Technology Review Insights)
(PRNewsFoto/MIT Technology Review Insights)

The interactive index shows which countries are progressing fastest in global efforts to decarbonize and limit global heating in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The key findings are as follows:

  • Europe will be a future green leader. Europe dominates the top of the index, with 15 European nations in the top 20. Many countries across the region have already made progress with curbing emissions, transitioning energy production to renewable sources, and investing in green mobility. Since covid, the EU has committed more than €200 billion in bold green economy investments, accelerating decarbonization even in the most fossil-fuel dependent states.
  • Iceland, Denmark, and Norway top the index. Iceland, in first place, aims to be carbon neutral by 2040. The country has become a world leader in clean energy and carbon capture technology. Denmark (2nd) is the largest producer of hydrocarbons in Europe to stop issuing new oil and gas exploration licenses. Norway (3rd) is also striving to decouple its economy from fossil fuels.
  • Costa Rica and New Zealand secure top 10 positions. Costa Rica, ranked 7th, and New Zealand, ranked 8th, have made major strides with renewables and have world-leading agendas for decarbonization across industry and agriculture. Canada (14th), Singapore (16th), and Uruguay (20th), the other non-Europeans in the top 20, have strategies for decarbonization, transitioning energy sources, and government-led initiatives to promote green living, such as Singapore’s Zero Waste Masterplan, which aims to reduce landfill waste by 30% between now and 2030.
  • There is uneven progress across the world’s largest economies. The United States (40th) has reduced emissions over recent years and is responsible for nearly one-fifth of the world’s green patents. Yet it is emerging from four years of climate denial and remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels and unsustainable farming practices. China (45th) is responsible for more than one-quarter of global emissions but has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2060 and is the world’s fastest growing producer of renewable energy. France (5th), Germany (11th), and Canada (14th) are the highest ranked countries in the G20.
  • The countries at the bottom of the index risk losing competitiveness in the green economy. The laggards include South Africa (47th), Vietnam (49th), and Indonesia (57th), where economic pressures run counter to sustainable development. Japan (60th) has a goal to be carbon neutral by 2050, although government targets for renewable energy remain modest. The 16 "abstainer" countries at the bottom include petrostates such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, and Russia. The latter’s Energy Strategy 2035 for expanding oil and gas production identified the trend toward carbon neutrality as an existential threat.

"With hundreds of billions of dollars being injected into economies worldwide, covid-19 has created huge momentum for developing green industries and financing infrastructure that will be clean, technologically advanced, and climate resilient," says Nico Crepaldi, head of custom content, MIT Technology Review. "In the future, we’re likely to see ‘green’ being synonymous with economic competitiveness."

COVID-19 vaccines: Common solution, not competition

BEIJING, Jan. 15, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s COVID-19 vaccines:

At the end of 2020, one of China’s self-developed COVID-19 vaccines was granted conditional approval for general use by the National Medical Products Administration. Previously, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain had already greenlit the vaccine. After China’s official approval, over a dozen countries from different continents signed purchase agreements with China for the vaccine.

Since the initial outbreak, scientists around the world have been working to develop an effective vaccine. Various approaches have been adopted, such as mRNA vaccines, inactivated vaccines and adenovirus vector vaccines. The mRNA vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was approved in the U.K. and U.S. in December 2020. The adenovirus vector vaccine developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca has not long since been rolled out. China’s recently approved vaccine is inactivated, which is a mature technique, thus making it relatively safe. Without special requirements for transportation or storage, the vaccine’s cost is lower, meaning it is more affordable.

Recent news on the virus mutating makes achieving herd immunity via vaccination all the more important. As such, the Chinese government has promised to provide vaccines free of charge to all Chinese people.

The approval and future use of China’s inactivated vaccine has been made possible only through international cooperation. The phase 3 clinical trials, for instance, were conducted in countries including the UAE and Argentina. Now China is speeding up vaccine production, working to make them a global public good, while being more accessible and affordable. In the future, China will actively provide vaccines to developing countries, including through donations, which is in line with China’s joining of COVAX.

Many foreign media outlets have continued to link vaccine development with political purposes, and have disparaged China’s vaccines. In fact, research and development into COVID-19 vaccines is not a case of companies or countries competing against one another. Faced with the virus, humanity should work together to seek solutions to this common challenge.

Any effective vaccine would mark a victory for global public health and all humanity. China will continue to work with other countries on vaccine development, share knowledge and experience in fighting the pandemic, and overcome the challenge.

The CPC: Why and How It Works in China

BEIJING, Jan. 8, 2021 — An article by China.org.cn on the Communist Party of China:

China’s political system, especially the Communist Party of China (CPC)’s status as the only ruling party, has been challenged by some Western countries for a long time. Such a challenge lingers despite the country’s success in developing into the world’s second largest economy and creating many miracles.

It’s by no means fortuitous that the CPC can lead the Chinese people to such great achievements, which are attributable to the CPC’s traits.

Every political party has aspirations, but the aspirations of each party can be very different from each other. While many political parties scramble for power and profit in service to their respective groups, the CPC represents the interests of the broadest possible majority of the Chinese people.

The CPC has mechanisms for selecting and appointing officials on the basis of merit and ability.

The standards and procedures used by a political party to select officials are extremely important, because these directly determine whether or not the party in question can maintain its advanced nature and purity and remain a vital and cohesive organization. The requirements for building the ranks of Party officials include that it shall select officials on the basis of their merits and not their origins, that it shall choose candidates based on their moral integrity and professional competence, and that it shall resolutely oppose localism and nepotism. The emphasis on the development of their abilities by incrementally moving them to higher positions according to their performance and giving them the experiences of working in multiple positions. These concepts, principles, and systems are playing an increasingly large role in the development of the official ranks, and are receiving growing recognition from other political parties.

The CPC has the courage to reform itself. The CPC is not only equipped with the prowess to lead social revolution, but also the courage to reform itself. This has allowed it to form the abilities and mechanisms necessary to purify, improve, and reform itself, ensuring that it can, by its own initiative, rectify any problems that arise within itself.

It is a ruling party’s ability to make prudent and logical decisions that determines whether or not a country can develop well. China has adopted the CPC-led multi-party cooperation system, with the CPC holding power and the eight other democratic parties participating in state affairs and supervising the CPC. Different from two-party or multi-party competition systems of Western countries, the multi-party cooperation system has endowed China with the advantages of long-term planning and the integration of resources, thus enabling it to solve complex problems and further reforms.

Thanks to the CPC’s adoption of the reform and opening-up policy in 1978 and the socialist market economy later on, China has seen remarkable progress over the past few decades that has taken almost a century for other countries to achieve.

The CPC has demonstrated its strong leadership abilities throughout the historical process of leading the people toward the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

China’s rapid response to COVID-19 outbreak in January and rigid epidemic-control measures taken to win the fight against the virus has once again highlighted the unique nature and advantages of the Chinese political system.

A Chinese saying goes that "only your feet know whether your shoes fit well". The leadership of the CPC is the choice of the Chinese people. The political development and national conditions of modern China called for a socialist political system with Chinese characteristics, and that is the multi-party cooperation system. This system has contributed to China’s economic rise, the profound changes in its citizens’ lives and the country’s increasingly important role on the world stage. All of these achievements testify to the wisdom of the Chinese people’s choice.
