Modern-day ‘Mogao Grottoes’ hidden in Beijing airport

BEIJING, April 1, 2021 — A feature story by China.org.cn on scholars and experts’ work to save documents, images and memories related to groundbreaking murals painted at Beijing Capital International Airport:

Scholars and experts are working hard to save documents, images and memories related to groundbreaking murals painted in 1979 at Beijing Capital International Airport, in order to create an informative book and preserve their legacy, as well as celebrate Tsinghua University’s 110th anniversary.

"The airport’s murals are like the 20th-century continuation of those at the ancient Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in Gansu province, continuing the legacy of Chinese murals," said Zhou Aimin, associate professor at the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University (AADTHU).

Special history

Beijing Capital International Airport opened in 1958, and construction of its first international terminal building began in 1974. Four years later, the Ministry of Culture and the Civil Aviation Administration of China invited teachers and students from the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts (now the AADTHU) to create art deco murals for the new building.

Zhang Ding, then-president of the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts, headed the creative team behind what was the first large-scale national-level mural project since the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The faculty and students worked with 52 artists from 17 provinces and municipalities across China to create more than 50 artworks, including murals and oil paintings. Completed in 1979, these artworks were placed at various sites around the terminal, from waiting rooms to restaurants.

At the 4th Congress of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC) in 1979, fellow artists praised the airport murals for blazing a new path for the artform in China. "The creators emancipated their minds, bravely innovated, and integrated China’s traditional mural crafts and modern techniques," said Zhou Yang, then-president of CFLAC.

Tang Wei, now a professor of AADTHU, took part in the project as a college student in 1979. "At first I felt a little bit clueless, but when I started working, I was very excited and energized in that special atmosphere, inspired by such renowned artists and fellow participants, who were also excited to look at the blank concrete terminal walls with their own visions."

Tang was tasked with helping artist Yuan Yunfu finish the mural "Mountains and Rivers of Sichuan." When she looked back on the murals, she called them "creations with long artistic accumulation," while she described the artists as "constantly striving for perfection."

For example, Zhang Ding was both directing the team to create their works, while himself creating a mural titled "Nezha Stirs Up the Sea." Tang recalled: "He insisted on using traditional Chinese techniques to create the contemporary murals, repeatedly testing various paints and pigments to find the best solutions."

Cultural impact

Du Dakai, another prominent professor at AADTHU, also participated in the airport project, assisting artist Zhu Danian. "When the murals were all finished, I could feel the shockwaves," he said, noting that many people made the trip out to view the artworks, despite the airport’s remote location. A detail from the mural "Song of the Forest," created by Zhu, was later featured on the cover of an art textbook for China’s high school.

Du remembered a visit to the airport by Kuwabara Sumio, a renowned Japanese art critic and scholar: "He said, ‘This is the spring of China; a new era has come.’"

The artworks at Beijing Capital International Airport have influenced generations of Chinese artists, as well as serving as an aesthetic education for domestic and foreign travelers, acting as symbols of Chinese culture, and representing China’s reform and opening-up.

Artist Yuan Yunsheng painted female nudes in a mural portraying the Dai ethnic minority’s Water-Sprinkling Festival — a remarkable feat at a time when Chinese society was relatively conservative.

Henry Fok Ying-tung, the late Hong Kong-based tycoon, once recalled: "At that time, when investing in the mainland, we always feared policy changes. Every time I went to Beijing, I had to see if the mural was still there. If it was, my heart would be more secure."

Preserving memories

As many of the artists and participants of the project have grown old or passed away, historians, scholars and experts were determined to ensure the artworks will live on forever.

Back in 2019, the AADTHU held an exhibition marking the project’s 40th anniversary. Nearly 30 former participants of the project were interviewed to record their memories, and documents, manuscripts and photos related to the project were also collected.

In addition, since April 2019, the AADTHU has been compiling a book on the Beijing airport murals based on two years of research. This year, the book will be published as part of celebrations to mark the 110th anniversary of Tsinghua University.

"An international airport is the gateway to a country. Machines or equipment may become obsolete over time, but the value of art will never go out of fashion. If an artwork was created based on ancient traditions but has new innovations, it is a valuable creation," said the late Ikuo Hirayama, one of the most celebrated contemporary Japanese artists, when commenting on Beijing’s airport murals.

Chinese cities feature prominently in global Top 50 Smart City Government rankings

Seven Chinese cities emerge among the top 50 smart city governments worldwide

SINGAPORE, March 31, 2021 — Seven Chinese cities – Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Chongqing – clinched spots in the second edition of the Top 50 Smart City Government rankings released by Eden Strategy Institute.

Four of these cities – Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou – are new entrants into the Top 50, signifying the rapid pace of urbanisation, technological growth, and smart city development within the country.

The Top 50 Smart City Government ranking focuses on the role of city governments in driving smart city development. The study aims to shed light on the importance of strategy, leadership, people-centricity, policies, ecosystem, incentives, and talent in determining the success and effectiveness of technologies deployed in smart cities, moving beyond evaluating the efficacy and outcomes of technological solutions applied by cities.

More than 230 cities were evaluated and examined by Eden, with city governments invited to submit supporting details, reports, and outcomes of their smart city strategies in a global-wide Call for Proposals during the study. Interviews were then conducted with smart city officials to validate facts and gather more in-depth insights about their unique challenges and pathways in smart city building. The information collected through extensive research by Eden, the Call for Proposals, and the interviews with smart city officials were then used to holistically assess cities.

"Top smart city governments in the 2020/2021 rankings were able to collaborate and partner with public and private sector stakeholders; use digital solutions and data to deliver services and make decisions; all while considering implications on inclusion and citizen trust", says Mr. Calvin Chu Yee Ming, Managing Partner at Eden Strategy Institute.

The 2020/2021 edition also highlights a regional showcase of emerging smart cities which were not featured in the Top 50 rankings. "We also wanted to celebrate how other smart cities across the region excelled in a particular aspect, including their unique and creative efforts to launch smart city initiatives within their city, even though they were not part of the Top 50," explains Mr. Chu.

One of the most distinct elements of Chinese governments’ smart city strategies is the large focus on talent development, with city governments expending significant efforts to attract and retain top talent within their cities to drive smart city innovation and to increase technological competitiveness.

Singapore emerged top in the rankings alongside Seoul, London, Barcelona, and Helsinki; cities which were not only advanced in terms of technologies adopted throughout the city, but in their government’s efforts to bring the city population along their digitalisation journey. Globally, eighteen new cities were welcomed into the Top 50 list, including cities such as Tallinn, Oslo, and Moscow.

14th Five-Year Plan: How China guides development with five-year plans

BEIJING, March 13, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on the China’s 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035:

At the fourth session of the 13th National People’s Congress (NPC), the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 was approved. The plan clearly states that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China will accelerate the establishment of a new development pattern of "dual circulation," where domestic and foreign markets can boost each other, with the domestic market as the mainstay, and start a new journey of building a modern socialist country with a new development concept.

China’s five-year plans are a series of social and economic development initiatives issued since the 1950s, which map strategies, put forward targets and set corresponding policy-making directions. They are an important way in which the Communist Party of China (CPC) governs the country.

In 1953, China drew up its first five-year plan when the country needed to build its capacity from scratch. The 1st Five-Year Plan (1953-1957) set out the basic task of laying the foundations of China’s industrialization and completing its socialist transformation. During that period, China successfully produced its first car, its first jet aircraft and the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge. By the end of 1957, China’s total industrial output had increased by 128.6% compared with 1952.

In 1986, China drew up the 7th Five-Year Plan (1986-1990). This plan, devised after the reform and opening-up of China, included for the first time sections on "expanding external economic and technological exchanges" and "investment structure and policy," and also placed the development of science and education in important strategic positions. During the 7th Five-Year Plan period, China’s economic system underwent major changes, with the Shanghai Stock Exchange starting operations in December 1990.

In the last five years (2016-2020) of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, the 13th Five-Year Plan highlighted "innovation" and "reform." It also set out key tasks including targeted poverty alleviation, construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, integration of Hong Kong and Macao into overall national development, and strengthened the crackdown on corruption. By the end of 2020, China’s GDP exceeded the threshold of 100 trillion yuan ($15.42 trillion). Meanwhile, the Fuxing bullet trains, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, C919 airplane, Chang’e-4 spacecraft, Beidou Navigation System and other achievements have become new icons of China.

China’s five-year plans can be said to have charted the path of national economic and social development, and recorded the entire process of the country’s growth.

From the 1st to 14th Five-Year Plan, China has been marching toward the same goal, that is, to achieve modernization. The consistency of targets, long-term decisions, stability and continuity of guidelines are distinguishing features of China’s governance system.

Now, the new 14th Five-Year Plan and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 will lead the Chinese people toward building a great modern socialist country with a brighter future.

Chinese dance show recreates glamour of Tang Dynasty

BEIJING, Feb. 26, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on a dance show featured Tang Dynasty culture:

During Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, dance show "Night Banquet in the Tang Dynasty Palace" went viral on Chinese social media. The five-minute performance depicts a group of plump palace maid figurines who "came to life," capering around on their way to a court feast.

Modern digital technologies including VR and AR, are used to produce a combination of virtual scene with real stage, shifting from a museum housing such national treasures as the owl-shaped wine vessel and Jiahu Bone Flutes, to majestic red-walled palaces. This visual feast allowed viewers to travel back in time to the Tang Dynasty.

The Tang Dynasty is considered a golden age in China’s long history. In the seventh century, when America and Africa were still "sleeping continents," China was experiencing unprecedented national unity, with wise and open-minded political governance, intellectual liberation and a vibrant economy. Diverse cultures intermixed, and the Chinese civilization spread throughout the world along the ancient Silk Road.

In the show, the dancers wore padded clothing with cotton in their cheeks to better represent the full-figured Tang women. Meanwhile, the crescent-shaped makeup on their temples faithfully reproduced the fashionable "xiehong" makeup of the time. The dancers were dressed in simple and bright clothing with low-cut necklines, showing the diverse Tang Dynasty fashion. These details vividly illustrate the free, open and confident look of Tang women, as well as the affluence and openness of the society.

The dancers wielded flutes, cymbals, five-stringed lutes and panpipes, which were popular musical instruments during the Sui and Tang dynasties. Many of these were introduced to China during ancient times, demonstrating the Tang Dynasty’s inclusive culture which integrated elements from East and West.

Openness, inclusiveness and the coexistence and mixture of different civilizations are why this period continues to fascinate people around the world, and the idea behind it is a valuable heritage passed on by the Tang Dynasty.

Nowadays, many people from other countries are keenly interested in cultural elements from the Tang dynasty, including the costumes, architecture, and related films and TV shows. At the same time, however, some have also deliberately stirred up controversy. The real Tang Dynasty culture is worth more attention.

"Night Banquet in the Tang Dynasty Palace" gives viewers a glimpse into this fascinating culture. Through the mobile internet and digital technologies, these "national treasures," preserved as part of China’s 5,000-year history and culture, are waiting to be known and appreciated by more.

Going global: EyeSee ventures into APAC, reinforces operations in North America

GHENT, Belgium, Feb. 22, 2021EyeSee kicks off 2021 by broadening its global reach and capabilities with a new sales office in Singapore and an operations office in Mexico City. The award-winning company has been steadily doubling in size every year to meet the growing demand for agile & scalable behavioral research from clients such as Twitter, Microsoft, Colgate-Palmolive, J&J, Bayer, Disney, and many more.

Relying exclusively on online research technology (remote eye tracking and emotion tracking through facial expression) EyeSee was able to serve clients in all geographies from its beginnings, conducting research in 40+ countries. However, the fruitful relationships EyeSee forged with its clients drive demand for further global growth in exciting markets such as the APAC region and real-time support in North America.

Joris De Bruyne, EyeSee’s partner explains this step: "We are moving into Singapore to follow our clients, and we have already done projects with our blue-chip clients in Asia."

It is not just about scaling the operations – for Olivier Tilleuil, EyeSee’s founder and partner: "The ability to attract and help develop top-notch behavioral research experts in any market we do business in, is one of the most exciting and fulfilling aspects of this." He continues: "As our organization grows into a true global leader we have a chance to create true experts in our teams and a recognizable brand that stands for cutting-edge behavioral research."

The Singapore office will continue to develop EyeSee’s key accounts in the APAC region. It will be lead by Tom Vande Moortel, and the Mexican office setup is underway with Diego Adolfo Chávez Terrazas, an experienced researcher, who previously worked for Walmart, Colgate-Palmolive, Turner Media and Kantar – as the Country lead and Insights Director.

Tom Vande Moortel explained what sets EyeSee apart in a market brimming in innovation in a hub such as Singapore: "We are very excited to enter into a market with highly developed digital commerce, and our product portfolio is perfectly matched for clients in such an environment."

Diego Adolfo Chávez Terrazas sees the biggest opportunity in a new generation of researchers in Mexico: "We seek smart and talented people who will add value to our clients. For those talents who want to settle the new way of doing Marketing Research in a cooperative and innovative environment – EyeSee Mexico is the place to be."

Lumen Acclaimed by Frost & Sullivan for Boosting Enterprise Customer Web Application Security with Its Holistic Web Protection Solution

The Lumen platform’s reliability and product performance simplifies and streamlines secure application experiences for its customers

LONDON, Feb. 18, 2021 — Based on its recent analysis of the global holistic web protection market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Lumen Technologies with the 2021 Global New Product Innovation Award for its Holistic Web Protection solution. The platform enables businesses to identify and mitigate various cybersecurity threats through networking, Edge computing, security, and collaboration. It combines distributed-denial-of-service mitigation (DDoS), web application firewall (WAF), and bot risk management (BRM) technologies to achieve optimal efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

"Lumen has leveraged emerging data technologies through enhanced connectivity to secure application experiences with its comprehensive Holistic Web Protection solution. Since its rebranding from CenturyLink to Lumen, the company has doubled down on efforts to improve the customer experience and leverages employee expertise to deliver a swift solution," said Mikita Hanets, Research Analyst. "The platform positions its customers to acquire, analyze, and act on data efficiently to deliver secure application experiences."

By integrating DDoS, WAF, and BRM solutions, Lumen streamlines precise and granular enterprise security defenses. These offerings can help reduce false-positives and enable higher detection rates for both known and unknown threats between automated and human web traffic. Moreover, they leverage multi-tier threat intelligence data, attackers’ behavior patterns, dynamic analytic engines, and machine learning intelligence for accurate results. Lumen’s complete portfolio of WAF/web application and API protection solutions, integrated with DDoS mitigation, are tailored to customer needs.

Lumen has unique visibility into the global Internet backbone; which allows it to harness threat intelligence, enriched in Black Lotus Labs, its threat research division. Lumen also uses Black Lotus Labs’ global threat intelligence to provide faster and more effective DDoS mitigation. Lumen DDoS Mitigation Service is a global service backed by 85 Tbps of mitigation capacity across Lumen’s global scrubbing centers with next-gen intelligent routing. DDoS Hyper is a self-serve version of this offer, leveraging the same underlying infrastructure.

"The company builds its core value around enhanced application delivery architecture to manage challenging, data-intensive workloads moving towards the cloud edge. Its rapid, agile, technology-powered solutions are expected to help it thrive in a highly competitive market," noted Steven Lopez, Best Practices Research Analyst. "Overall, Lumen has evolved into a technology company with unmatched developments due to its newly evolved web security platform and by embracing the shift towards customer-centricity."

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that develops an innovative element in a product by leveraging leading-edge technologies. The award recognizes the value-added features/benefits of the product and the increased return on investment (ROI) it gives customers, which, in turn, raises customer acquisition and overall market penetration potential.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analyses, and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
