Meituan Unveils Self-Developed Drone Model, Plans for Drone Logistics Network at 2021 World Artificial Intelligence Conference

HONG KONG, July 8, 2021 — Meituan (HKG: 3690) (the "Company"), China’s leading e-commerce platform for services, today introduced a new, self-developed drone model and announced plans for a drone logistics network pilot program in Shanghai. The announcement was made at the 2021 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, where Meituan demonstrated how drones and delivery riders could conceivably work together to deliver orders.

In a partnership with local government, Meituan will explore opportunities for the construction of a demonstration center in Shanghai’s southwestern district of Jinshan; this center will run pilot operations for an urban low-altitude logistics network, the first of its kind to be established in China. The three-pronged network of drones, ground support infrastructure (landing ports, battery changing stations), and cloud-based dispatching systems will aim to achieve 15-minute delivery time for destinations within a three kilometer radius.

"Low-altitude logistics networks in urban areas will present an important growth opportunity for innovation and technology over the coming 10 to 20 years," said Puzhong Wang, Meituan Senior Vice President and head of the company’s on-demand delivery business. "Our efforts reflect Meituan’s hopes to use inclusive technology and innovation to help people live better."

"This network would enable us to adapt to different delivery scenarios across residential communities, shopping malls, office buildings, etc.," said Yinian Mao, head of Meituan’s drone delivery unit. "We envision a collaborative, integrated network where our drones and delivery riders can work seamlessly together to deliver orders."

Meituan began exploring drone delivery opportunities in 2017. In early 2021, Meituan’s efforts reached a milestone when its drones delivered meals to customers in Shenzhen for the first time. Riders would pick up orders from merchants and take them to drone launching pads for last-mile delivery. Drones would then deliver them to special drone drop-off lockers, after which users could scan QR codes to pick up the orders. In June, Meituan also used drones to deliver vital supplies to residents in Shenzhen’s Nanshan district, who were isolated by a COVID-induced quarantine.

As of June 2021, Meituan’s drones have completed over 200,000 flight tests and delivered over 2,500 orders. Meituan has now completed the preliminary development stages for its drones and dispatching systems, with over 90% of its core systems and components developed in house.

LONDON, July 7, 2021 — Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT), a global leader in providing trusted information and insights to accelerate the pace of innovation, today unveiled significant enhancements to the Web of Science™ offering researchers a highly dynamic, personal and indispensable research assistant through a host of new features and a redesigned user interface.

The Web of Science is the world’s most trusted publisher-independent global citation database, home to an unrivalled breadth of world-class research literature linked to a rigorously selected core of journals. It enables the global research community to track ideas across disciplines and time from almost 1.9 billion cited references from over 171 million records.

The new Web of Science simplifies how the index’s world-class data and analytics are presented, accessed and used, allowing for a smooth and intuitive user experience. The new features include:

  • The Web of Science Author Impact Beamplots – A new visualization tool that showcases the range of a researcher’s publication and citation impact in a single data exhibit. Any researcher with publications in the Web of Science Core Collection™ can examine their own beamplot, providing contextual insights around their personal research performance to better support responsible research evaluation.

Clearly displaying the links between research and patents helps researchers demonstrate impact and aids discovery of specific research linking to patents.
  • Share a search query – It is now possible to copy a search query in the Web of Science, making it easier to share searches directly with other researchers and supporting collaboration.
  • Advanced search workflow – Now includes a query builder that re-uses the search history to make precision searching easier and faster for all users.

  • Export into RIS reference format – Users can now export into the RIS reference format from the Web of Science Core Collection, into EndNote™ and many other bibliographic management tools, providing more choice for researchers.
  • Article recommendations – A new feature to encourage serendipitous discovery, helping researchers uncover papers that they might not have found with their search strategy.

The new Web of Science is also designed to support a range of future developments, including personalized home pages, author alerts and article-level metrics. GSMA Celebrates The Return Of MWC Barcelona

Getting back to business and back together to discuss Connected Impact at the historic hybrid event

BARCELONA, Spain, July 6, 2021 — The GSMA is celebrating the safe and successful return of MWC Barcelona, the world’s largest mobile ecosystem event. It is humbling that in the most challenging circumstances, people came together for MWC21. Convening this year was possible because of a commitment to innovation and the direct support of the mobile ecosystem, customers, partners, and the community – and the GSMA are very grateful. Without question, this support underlines that mobile technology must continue to play a vital role in the global recovery and that the event created momentum for MWC22.

Entrance to MWC21 in Barcelona
Entrance to MWC21 in Barcelona

MWC21 was different from past editions. The first physical-virtual event of its kind saw executives, exhibitors and, sponsors taking in keynotes, networking, visiting exhibits and, deal-making over four days.

"I am proud of the team for delivering a high-quality event in an extraordinarily complex environment. The pandemic has indelibly changed how we gather. We had to develop new health and safety protocols and a hybrid platform but, we did it! It was only possible because of a community of support for which I am very grateful," said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA. "I cannot tell you how delighted I am to be back and, I’m encouraged that thousands more joined us virtually. MWC21 created momentum and is helping us reimagine what events look like. Bring on MWC22."

The health and safety plan, Committed Community, was critical in bringing people together safely and, its elements were seen and felt everywhere. Approved by the Catalan Health Authorities, the plan was developed for the event and delivered in partnership with Quironprovencion. They administered thousands of tests and expertly cared for all involved. Attendees have been complimentary of the plan, and the GSMA is grateful for the cooperation of all who attended. We all played a role in creating a safe environment allowing us to be together for the first time in 15 months.

Our thanks

Planning this year was beyond complicated; MWC21 became a reality because of the strength and commitment of our staff and partners. A special thanks to the GSMA team, Barcelona City Council, Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transformation, Fira de Barcelona, Tourism de Barcelona (the Host City Parties), the L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and people of Catalonia and Spain. Your support this year meant that we delivered MWC21 with excellence, a testament to the trust and collaboration this community has developed over years of working together.

"We have a new appreciation for the value of human connection and, for me, being together again at MWC21 in Barcelona has been inspiring," said John Hoffman, CEO, GSMA Ltd. "Last February, we were faced with a fast-moving coronavirus and were the first organisation to cancel a large international event over health and safety concerns. Last week we reignited business by bringing together the mobile and adjacent vertical ecosystems at MWC21 in a safe and healthy environment. The dynamism of global circumstances meant that we had to evaluate and re-invent operational processes in partnership with our teams to make MWC a reality. I’m proud of the team and profoundly grateful for everyone who played a role in bringing the industry back together again."

A special thanks to our MWC21 partners and sponsors. Your support helped make this possible.

China Matters reveals the effort of a Chinese village in preventing falling back into poverty

BEIJING, July 2, 2021 — 2020 was undoubtedly the year of Covid-19 but in the same year, it is also the year of China’s eradication of absolute poverty in rural areas. And key to this has been China’s formula to focus on a collective effort where the urban and rural areas work together to achieve shared prosperity.

jwplayer.key=”3Fznr2BGJZtpwZmA+81lm048ks6+0NjLXyDdsO2YkfE=”

jwplayer(‘myplayer1’).setup({file: ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh-Ikbaw0w8’, image: ‘http://www.prnasia.com/video_capture/3431650_AE31650_1.jpg’, autostart:’false’, aspectratio: ’16:9′, stretching : ‘fill’, width: ‘600’, height: ‘338’});

But could rural areas fall back into poverty? Do people still need to be supported from here and onwards? And how do you prevent people from falling back into poverty? China’s answer is ‘rural revitalization’. China Matters reveals the effort of a Chinese village in preventing falling back into poverty.

A year on, in 2021, as part of this strategy, rural areas like Sanjianxi village in Shandong province’s capital of Jinan, are kicking on and not looking back. Sanjianxi is now looking to tap into its own resources to further develop. It is aiming to become self-reliant by developing its own local tourism sites, creating its own industrial business zone and putting together sustainable agriculture that’s greener.

But how do you bring all these aspects together to make it work? And how do these benefit the village? British host Josh Arslan from China Matters goes to find out. He speaks to one lady who is behind Sanjianxi’s transformation as well as the lives of many in the village. And more importantly, Josh asks if this is a ‘pilot project’ whereby if successful, which can be replicated across other rural areas in China? And whether it could go as long as in narrowing the country’s longstanding rural-urban gap to bring up the living standards of rural residents to the level of their urban counterparts?
