Tuya Smart at CES 2022: IoT Security Products in Spotlight as COVID-19 Spurs Global Demand for IoT

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2022As a leader in the IoT sector, global IoT development platform service provider Tuya Smart (NYSE: TUYA) is also showcasing a number of brand-new security-related products and solutions at CES 2022. Two years on from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, CES 2022 is coming back to Las Vegas in person, enabled by heightened safety measures adopted by the event organizers. One of the major impacts of the pandemic on IoT and smart devices has been the rise of global network security issues, that have been further amplified by consumer needs and behaviors during the pandemic. According to a 2021 report from IoT Analytics, the number of connected IoT devices are expected to hit 12.3 billion active endpoints globally by the end of 2021 and grow to over 27 billion IoT connections by 2025. Coupled with increased remote work after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers are more exposed than ever to online attacks. According to Akamai’s annual state of the internet security report, remote work and increased connectivity contributed to a spike in cyber-attacks, while web application attacks tripled in 2021, from what was already a record year in 2020.

At this year’s CES, network security has become a topic of concern for all major players in the industry. Among the issues, IoT security has risen a key focus for many manufacturers, developers and suppliers to exhibit their forward-looking vision and R&D capabilities, as there are particular challenges for IoT that differ from those of traditional network security. Throughout CES, posters and videos promoting network security solutions can abound and security-related hardware products are in pride of place at many booths.


At Tuya Smart’s CES booth, the company’s new IoT security module WBR3N, exhibited in physical form and available for virtual tour online, has drawn the attention of many journalists and industry professionals. This industry-leading security module is the first IoT module of its kind with a built-in secure element (SE) to hold a Common Criteria (CC) EAL6+ certificate.

Commanding comprehensively robust security guarantee, the module realizes mutual certificate authentication and device activation authentication between the device and the cloud, in addition to the Elliptical Curve Cryptography (ECC) security certificate and device certification information that is built into the Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) block during the production process. In terms of communication, WBR3N uses TLS1.2 two-way strong verified communication based on security authentication, which represents the highest level of communication security in the industry.

In terms of security protection of device data, WBR3N uses built-in independent SE to execute the data encryption and decryption process, therefore fully safeguarding data security. At the same time, the module provides SE-based independent physical security storage, and has a built-in root of trust (RoT), through which storage is performed. The core codes also enjoy protection by the built-in SE, while OTA ensures process safety through a secure communication process and firmware verification.

Overall, WBR3N comes with multiple logical and physical protection layers such as metal shielding, end-to-end encryption, memory encryption, and tampering detection, able to effectively fend off various advanced attack methods such as power analysis and fault attack.

Aside from enhanced hardware security capabilities, Tuya Smart has also announced the release of Tuya Sage, an IoT security operation platform, at CES 2022. The solution is designed to help developers identify and eliminate potential security risks of the IoT system, and ensure security and compliance during system operations.

SK Telecom Showcases Green ICT at CES 2022

SKT will operate a joint exhibition booth with SK Inc., SK Innovation, SK hynix, SK E&S and SK Ecoplant under the theme of ‘SK’s 2030 Net Zero Pledge’ and offer a chance for visitors to experience its innovative green technologies. 

  • Environmentally friendly AI and telecommunications network technologies

AI and telecommunications networks stand at the core of ICT innovation. However, they are also pointed out as a cause of environmental pollution due to the large amount of power they consume. Against this backdrop, SKT is accelerating an ICT revolution through the development and application of low-power high-efficiency semiconductors and energy-saving telecommunications network technologies. 

At CES 2022, SKT will be showcasing its self-developed AI chip named SAPEON. SAPEON is optimally designed to process artificial intelligence tasks faster, using less power by efficiently processing large amounts of data in parallel.

With the rapid spread of AI services in people’s daily lives and industries, the amount of data that needs to be processed is growing exponentially. However, the existing AI data centers that use Graphics Processing Units (GPU) for inference are receiving criticism for consuming a great amount of energy. SAPEON is an environmentally-friendly solution as it uses 20% less power than GPU, while supporting 1.5 times faster deep learning computation. 

SKT will also introduce Single RAN, a technology that reduces the amount of power usage by approximately 53% through integrated operation of 3G and LTE network equipment. The company either replaced the outdated 3G and LTE equipment with new equipment applied with Single RAN or upgraded the software of its existing LTE equipment with Single RAN to operate as both 3G and LTE equipment.

By successfully applying Single RAN to all applicable base stations and repeaters installed in 78 cities in Korea including Seoul in 2020, SKT earned around 10,000 tons of carbon credits. 

  • ICT solutions for reducing carbon generation in daily lives 

At CES 2022, SKT will invite visitors to experience its metaverse service, multi-use cup project and other ICT services that can help reduce CO2 emissions such as optimal route navigation service. 

The company will introduce its metaverse platform Ifland as a new promising path towards a low carbon society. Ifland allows users to take carbon generating activities such as conferences, presentations and business trips to the virtual world. 

It provides a wide variety of virtual spaces including conference halls, outdoor stages and rooftops, and enables users to enjoy rich communication by sharing documents (PDF) and video files (MP4). It can accommodate up to 130 users simultaneously, which makes it an ideal place for large-scale events. 

Ifland has been providing users with a new and environmentally friendly experience by migrating diverse offline events to the virtual world ranging from the D-100 event for 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial and K-pop concerts. 

SKT will also present the Habit Cup Project that promotes the use of multi-use cups to reduce plastic waste. Coffee shops participating in the project are serving beverages in multi-use cups named ‘Habit Cups’ that can be later returned via smart kiosks capable of identifying and accepting only Habit Cups through the use of SKT’s vision AI technology. Returned cups are collected everyday to be cleaned and sanitized, and then delivered back to cafes. 

At present, SKT is carrying out a trial project joined by around 20 cafes located in central areas of Seoul, where there is a large floating population. The company expects to eliminate the use of 1.2 million disposable cups during the three-month project period. It is also implementing a trial project in Jeju Island, and expects to reduce the use of 630,000 disposable cups per year. 

Korea’s No.1 mobility platform T Map will also be on display. By providing an optimal route, T Map contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving fuel. The service also helps save social costs by decreasing the risk of traffic accidents through enhanced safety features like sudden brake alert.

Fiber-optic cables offer many benefits over their copper counterparts, especially in long cable runs. At such high bitrates, copper cables longer than 10 feet or so can really struggle to get the data from point A to point B. But fiber-optic cables are immune to this problem; they can extend to just about any length with no loss of signal whatsoever. In addition, they are invulnerable to electrical interference, with no need for fancy, bulky shielding. 

How do they work? The transmitting end converts electrical signals into pulses of light, which travel along the fiber-optic cable and are converted back into electrical signals at the receiving end. EcoFlow Triples Sales for the 2nd Consecutive Year in 2021

The company reaches $200 million in annual revenue and reinforces its market shares

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 1, 2022 — EcoFlow, a portable power and renewable energy solutions company, today revealed that its annual revenue reached $200 million in 2021, increasing by 275% compared to the year before. EcoFlow has more than tripled its sales for the second consecutive year, outrunning the global portable power station market’s CAGR of 42%.


"The impressive sales growth can be attributed to a few things," said Allen Zheng, Sales Director at EcoFlow. "Our expansion to over 100 markets and the complete rollout of the RIVER and DELTA product lines are the main reasons. Rising power demand caused by increasing cases of extreme weather-related power outages also played a part."

In addition to the rapid sales growth, 2021 has been a milestone year for EcoFlow. In June, the company received a Series B investment of over $100 million from Sequoia’s China fund, Hillhouse, and CICC. The funding round catapulted the company to one of the top industry leaders and saw the company valued at over $1 billion. One month later, EcoFlow launched the DELTA Pro, the industry’s first portable home battery, on Kickstarter. The EcoFlow DELTA Pro went on to break Kickstarter’s record for the most-funded tech project by raising over $12 million and was named one of TIME’s 100 Best Inventions in 2021.

EcoFlow also took a more active role in environmental issues and emergency preparedness in 2021. In March, EcoFlow initiated a long-term reforestation fundraising campaign for the Million Forest Plan, an ecological project jointly initiated by the United Nations Environment Program, the Climate Organization, and the China Green Foundation. Waymo and Zeekr to collaborate on all-electric, fully autonomous ride-hailing vehicle

HANGZHOU, China and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Dec. 29, 2021 — Geely Holding Group’s (Geely) premium electric brand, Zeekr, will collaborate with Waymo on the development of a new pure electric vehicle for deployment in the Waymo One autonomous ride-hailing fleet in the United States.

The Program Explained / The plan. 

The new purpose-built mobility vehicle is being designed and developed at Zeekr’s R&D facility, CEVT (China Europe Vehicle Technology Centre) in Gothenburg, Sweden which has a proven track record in developing class leading vehicles for the wider Geely Holding Group. Under this collaboration, Zeekr will be designing and developing the future vehicle on a new proprietary and open-source mobility architecture. Waymo will take delivery of the vehicles in the United States and will then integrate its fully autonomous Waymo Driver into the vehicle platform.

The new vehicle will be designed to be rider-centric from the outset, setting a new benchmark for autonomous vehicles. The new Zeekr vehicle has been designed for autonomous use-cases and will come with a fully configurable cabin, both with and without driver controls, that can be tailored towards rider requirements for the Waymo One unmanned ride-hailing fleet in the US.

Zeekr was founded in early 2021 as a global technology-mobility brand with design and engineering resources in Sweden. The first model from Zeekr, the 001, was introduced in April 2021 with deliveries starting in October of the same year.
