Nothing Announces the Phone 3(a) Series Bringing More Power to Its Mid-range Flagship

Nothing’s push into the mid-range with the 3(a) and 3(a) Pro is more than just a play for a wider market; it’s a calculated move to deliver tangible improvements. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, powering both devices, is a key component here. It’s a chipset built on a 4nm process, which translates to efficiency and reliable performance. We’re talking smooth multitasking, fluid app transitions, and the ability to handle moderately intensive tasks without significant slowdown. For the everyday user, this means a consistent and responsive experience.

Nothing Phone 3(a) series

The camera setups are where the distinction between the 3(a) and 3(a) Pro becomes more pronounced. The standard 3(a) features a dual-camera system: a 50MP main sensor and an 8MP ultrawide lens. This configuration provides a solid foundation for capturing everyday moments, offering decent image quality across various lighting conditions. However, the 3(a) Pro elevates the photography experience with a triple-camera setup, featuring a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide, and an 8MP telephoto lens. The addition of the telephoto lens is a significant upgrade, enabling optical zoom capabilities, a feature often reserved for higher-end devices. Nothing’s image processing algorithms, applied to both models, aim to deliver natural-looking images with accurate colour reproduction.

Nothing Phone 3(a) pro

The displays on both phones utilize AMOLED technology, delivering vibrant colours and deep blacks. The 3(a) features a 6.67-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the 3(a) Pro boasts a slightly larger 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The higher refresh rate on both phones enhances the fluidity of scrolling and animations, providing a more immersive user experience.

Battery life is a critical consideration for any smartphone, and Nothing has equipped both the 3(a) and 3(a) Pro with a 5000mAh battery. Combined with the power-efficient Snapdragon chipset, this should provide ample battery life for most users. Fast charging is supported on both models, with Nothing claiming a 50% charge in just 30 minutes.

Nothing Phone 3(a)

Regarding storage and memory, the 3(a) is offered with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, while the 3(a) Pro comes with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. This range of configurations allows users to select the option that best suits their needs.

Additional features include an in-display fingerprint sensor for secure and convenient unlocking, stereo speakers for an immersive audio experience, and 5G connectivity for high-speed data transfer. Nothing OS, based on Android 14, provides a clean and bloatware-free interface, with the promise of timely software updates.

All Nothing Earbuds To Get ChatGPT Integration

Nothing, the company behind the transparent-designed Ear (1) earbuds, has announced integration with OpenAI’s powerful GPT-4 language model. This integration, available for select Nothing earbuds and smartphones, promises a more intuitive and voice-centric user experience.

While Nothing earbuds have primarily focused on audio playback, the inclusion of GPT-4 expands their functionality significantly. Users can now leverage the capabilities of this advanced LLM through voice commands, potentially transforming the earbuds into a versatile AI assistant. This announcement comes on the heels of Open AI’s announcement of GPT-4 omni or GPT-4o.

GPT-4o’s roll out brings an interesting dimension to Nothing’s integration of ChatGPT into its peripherals. In the announcement, Open AI highlighted a number of extended features that come even with the free version of ChatGPT. It will be interesting to see how this impacts user experiences.

Source: Nothing

However, there is a caveat. While the news sounds exciting, current reports suggest this initial integration has limitations. Firstly, it’s only compatible with specific Nothing earbuds, including the recently launched Ear (stick) and Ear (a), alongside the company’s upcoming phone models. Secondly, users require a Nothing phone – the Phone (1), Phone (2), or the Phone (2a) – to leverage GPT-4o’s capabilities through the earbuds.

Despite these limitations, the integration of ChatGPT with Nothing earbuds signifies a potential paradigm shift in the way we interact with wearable technology. Imagine a future where earbuds seamlessly integrate with AI assistants, providing real-time information, translation services, and voice-controlled device management – all through a convenient and discreet in-ear form factor.

While the potential applications are enticing, it’s important to acknowledge the ongoing discussions surrounding the safety and security of advanced AI models like GPT-4o. OpenAI, the developer behind GPT-4o, emphasizes its commitment to responsible development, implementing various safeguards during training and deployment. As this technology evolves, continued vigilance and ethical considerations remain paramount.

Nothing Phone (2a) Launches on March 5 2024. Here’s What We Know So Far…

As the launch of Nothing’s mid-range smartphone, the Nothing Phone (2a), draws near. Nothing has released a 10-minute video, in which it hinted at creating a truly special device for its community.

Why Phone (2a)? ft. Carl Pei

The official launch of the Nothing Phone (2a) is set for March 5, 2024, with a global release expected to follow. However, for US customers, a unique twist awaits – the need to enrol in a “Developer Program” to acquire the device. This echoes the approach taken during the Phone (1) launch, signalling a strategic move in the US market.

A notable change highlighted in the video is the absence of the “Beta Membership” label used during the Phone (1) launch, suggesting enhanced US network support.

Adding to the intrigue, Nothing teased a crucial detail – the price. While the exact cost remains undisclosed, the company assured viewers that the Phone (2a) would come at a more affordable price point than its predecessor, the Phone (1), initially priced at $299 in the US.

Leaked information has started to surface, providing a sneak peek into the Phone (2a). According to tipster Yogesh Brar, the device is rumoured to feature a 6.7-inch OLED panel, Dimensity 7200 Ultra SoC, 50MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide camera, and a 32MP selfie shooter. With a promising 45W fast charging support, the Phone (2a) is shaping up to be a compelling mid-range option.

As the countdown to March 5 continues, speculations abound on what Nothing will unveil next. Will they manage to keep the mystery intact, or will leaks gradually unravel the excitement?

Stay tuned for more updates as Nothing drops hints, promising a unique device that combines affordability with cutting-edge features.

Nothing Announces “CMF by Nothing” with Two Upcoming Products

Nothing is making waves with its approach to aesthetic technology. Hot on the heels of the release of the Nothing Phone (2), the company took to YouTube to give its quarterly community update. In this update, the team at Nothing in London gave a quick overview of the goings-on at the company. However, the updates’ other content was overshadowed by a special announcement from its founder, Carl Pei.

Screenshot 2023 08 08 at 10 50 13 882 Nothing Community Update Q2 2023 YouTube

That announcement is a new brand focused on bringing Nothing’s design philosophy to a more affordable price point. “CMF by Nothing” will continue to share Nothing’s design-led and user-centric approach to technology however, the new brand will focus on creating accessible products with a clean design and trusted quality. This breaks away from Nothing’s philosophy of pushing design innovation with premium materials and the latest technology. To ensure continuity with the efforts at Nothing itself, Car Pei notes that “CMF by Nothing” will be spearheaded by an independent team.

Nothing Community Update | Q2 2023

The announcement doesn’t end there, Carl Pei also announced that the new brand will be releasing CMF-branded smartwatch and headphones. The products are expected to make their debut later this year. There is so far no indication if the smartwatch will be utilising Google’s Wear OS software or going the route of OnePlus and Amazfit with a totally different OS.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Nothing has yet to release any smartwatch under the Nothing brand. So, it’s going to be interesting to see how CMF by Nothing will define clean design without Nothing leading the way in the product category.

Nothing Phone (2) has Launched – All-Around Better

The first-generation Nothing Phone (1) launched with not too much fanfare. But it did attract a lot of attention with its bold transparent design and all the LEDs that lights the back of the device up like nothing we have ever seen before. The LED lights and the different combinations you can get with the LEDs can be used as notification indicators for different apps. In regular devices with LEDs,

The Nothing Phone (1) did not pack hardware that is worth shouting about though. It made and sold squarely in the mid-range smartphone segment category. Still, the mid-range smartphone segment is currently the most competitive segment of the industry, even more so than the flagship segment. Innovation in the segment does not come in the form of powerful hardware or Megapixel on cameras. Innovation in this market is offering the more creative solution to common problems, offering flagship smartphone experiences, while ensuring that the device itself is still affordable and accessible to general users. That was the Nothing Phone tough, an innovative mid-range offering that ticks all of the boxes of a smartphone and even more with its unique approach to design. The Nothing Phone (2) that just launched continues that design philosophy.

The Nothing Phone (2) follows almost the same recipe that made the first Nothing Phone a great success. It has innovative transparent design, and an updated hardware that is still no slouch in anyway you look at it. Everything is better than before though on the new Phone (2).

For starters, you get a flagship class Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 system on a chip (SoC) that is still a relevant chipset today, even with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Paired up with a 12GB RAM and up to 512GB of storage, you are getting flagship levels of performance. All that keeps the Nothing OS 2.0 based on Android 13 running smoothly on the 6.7-inch OLED LTPO display boasting up to 120hz in refresh rate. They also say that the new interface is twice faster to start up than the older interface on the older device.

Out the back is a dual camera set up that offers 50-Megapixel photos on both ends. Of course, one is a regular wide camera offering 24mm in focal length, while the other is an Ultra-Wide shooter that should offer you more creative freedom when the photography bug hits you. Out the front is a 32-Megapixel shooter for clearer selfies or better-looking video calls. With the new interface, the camera also gets a few extra features like Advanced HDR and Motion Capture 2.0. The new 50-Megapixel main shooter also offers an advanced 18-bit Image Signal Processor that allows the Nothing Phone (2) to process up to 4,000 times more data than the first-generation Nothing Phone offering better accuracy in both photos and videos. Its combined Electronic (EIS) and Optical (OIS) image stabilizers allows you to record smooth 4K videos at 60fps.

Underneath the transparent body is a large 4,700 mAh battery that offers an entire day of battery life or more depending on your use case. When you do run out, charging it to 50% takes just 20 minutes. You can even charge it wirelessly if you want to.

The unique aspect of the Nothing Phone (2) is still the iconic Glyph Interface inherited from the first Nothing Phone. They have improved the Glyph Interface for the second-generation Nothing flagship smartphone though. There are more LED segments than before, allowing better customizability and even more options for users. It can also work as a countdown timer for anything from rides via a hailing service, or delivery progress. Of course, that also means that the Glyph Interface now works as a timer too. You can even check your smartphone’s volume just via the LEDs out the back. There is a new algorithm called the Essential Glyph Notifications where you can still receive notifications from select apps or even contacts. The top-right LED segment will be kept on until you address the notifications or calls. There is also something called the Glyph Composer now where you can personalize the smartphone experience by creating your own personalized Glyph Ringtones.

Availability and Price

The Nothing Phone (2) will be available in Malaysia 22nd of July 2023 onward from Nothing’s official online stores on Shopee and Lazada, along with Nothing’s authorized retailers across the nation. You can choose between two colours, however the most affordable 8GB + 128GB option is only available in black colour option. For the White colour option, you only get to choose between a 12GB + 256GB offering or a 12GB + 512GB variant. There are no mentions of its official pricing in Malaysia just yet. It will be available in select markets 17th of July 2023 onward forwith prices starting from US$ 599 (MYR 2,786*). Nothing Phone (2) Drops on July 15 in Malaysia

Nothing is on a roll when it comes to teasing their upcoming Phone (2). Nothing’s founder, Carl Pei, has been dropping teasers for the Phone (2) on Twitter for over a month. Just last week, the company revealed the Phone (2)’s design in an exclusive video with tech YouTuber, Marques Brownlee.

The new smartphone is rumoured to be coming with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a welcome upgrade from the mid-range processor that was used in the Phone (1). It doesn’t look like Nothing is changing much on the Phone (2) though when it comes to overall design. That said, in their video with Marques, it does look like the Glyph design has been updated. We won’t have to wait very long for confirmation of the leaks and specifications of the smartphone. The Nothing Phone (2) is geared for release on 11th July 2023 at 11 am (EST).

However, in typical Nothing style, the company has announced that the Nothing Phone (2) will be available in select regions starting on July 13, 2023. Its big debut in Malaysia will be happening on July 15, 2023, at Crossover in Mid Valley Megamall at 11 am local time. Nothing Ear (2) Launches, Coming to Your Ears for MYR 599.

Nothing does it again and launched their own set of wireless earbuds, the Nothing Ear (2). This one picks up from the first, Ear (1) wireless headphones. It is even priced the same as the previous earbuds at MYR 599.

Right out of the gate, you can tell that this will be a better pair of earphones than before. It boasts Hi-Res Audio certification where the previous one did not. It also packs LHDC 5.0 technology for an even better near lossless audio experience with the Ear (2). There is also an app now, the Nothing X app, to even fine tune the earphones to your ears.

You still get an 11.6mm Dynamic driver inside the earphones. It is one of the bigger drivers you can find on a modern earphone. The large driver could mean that you might get punchier audio from the earphones. That driver is also housed in a new dual-chamber design that is meant to improve acoustics and airflow within the earphone’s case.

Like the Ear (1), it comes with Noise Cancelling technology. Unlike the Hybrid Noise Cancelling technology you find in the first Nothing Ear, the Ear (2) features a personalized and adaptive Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology that offers better noise isolation and cancelling than before cancelling up to 40dB of noise. The mics also pick up ambient noise better than before.

Alongside the new noise cancelling technology, the Nothing Ear (2) also now features Dual Connection for you to easily connect and switch between two devices simultaneously and quickly. Of course, it has the new Fast Pair/Swift Pair technology that most modern wireless earphones offer today. The new mic algorithm with three high-definition mics and Clear Voice Technology is meant to pick up your voice better than before for crystal clear calls.

Where the previous earphones offer up to 24 hours of continuous listening experience with ANC turned on, the Nothing Ear (2) offers up to 22.5 hours with ANC on. With each charge, the Nothing Ear (2) offers 4 hours of listening experience at a time, which is also about an hour less than its predecessor. While that might seem to be a downgrade, you do want to remember that the Nothing Ear (2) is more feature packed than ever, which might be why its batteries lasts a little shorter than before.

You get better hardware installation than before too. Where the previous earphones offer IPX4 water resistance, the new Ear (2) offers IP54 water and dust resistance. The charging case offers IP55 water and dust resistance so you can keep the Ear (2) safe in the case.

Much Ado About Nothing? Not Really… Meet the Nothing Phone (1)

Carl Pei’s Nothing is at it again trying to redefine a smartphone. He successfully redefined the flagship smartphone while he helmed OnePlus. Now, he’s taking another go at it with the Nothing Phone (1). The new smartphone defies expectations and chooses to focus on the core user experiences instead of high powered hardware.

Nothing Phone 1 4 1
Source: Nothing

That isn’t to say that the Nothing Phone (1) is packing a punch. It comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ processor. According to Carl Pei, the company opted for a more reliable processor instead of the latest and greatest on paper. This was influenced by their drive to build a smartphone with their instincts rather than the data. The Snapdragon 778G+ comes with a 6nm archiecture which brings the best of battery life and performance. The Octacore processor also brings 5G connectivity and also Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity.

When it comes to design, the Nothing Phone (1) is made of a combination of plastics, glass and aluminium. During the launch, Carl Pei highlighted that none of the surfaces with which a user interacts is made of plastic. In fact, the front and back of the smartphone is made with Gorilla Glass 5 while the frame and bezel are made of recycled aluminium. The Phone (1) is possibly one of the more ecofriendly phones out there with more than 50% of its plastics being bioplastics. Even the tin used for soldering is 100% recycled.

The Nothing Phone (1) is keeping to the utilitarian approach which the company is becoming known for. Its version of Android is barebones and brings the best features of Android. Like the processor, the company is looking to focus on stability and quality. They believe that their approach to software will give their users a better, more reliable software experience. Of course, they are bringing in features that allow the Phone (1) to play nice with their own Ear (1) earbuds. This takes the form of controls front and center in the dock for active noise cancellation and more. The company is also looking to the future by creating their own NFT widget which allows users to display their collection or view floor prices for NFTs. Nothing is also promising 3 years of major Android Updates and 4 years of security patch updates rolled out every 2 months.

“At the beginning of the smartphone revolution, it felt like this amazing product category complete changed we lived, the way we communicate and, lately, it feels like – after a slew of more and more similar products, and more and more uninspiring products – that somehow the smartphone revolution has ended.

When it comes to cameras, the Phone (1) isn’t packing an extensive multi sensor setup. Instead, they are focusing on the essentials and looking to deliver a more consistent and well rounded experience with a dual 50-Megapixel setup. The main sensor is the Sony IMX766 bolstered with opitcal image stabilization and electronic image stabilization for better quality. This is complemented by the ultrawide Samsung JN1 with 114° field of view. The main camera setup is also capable of 4K recording at 30 frames per second. Up front is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX471 sensor with an f/2.5 aperture.

The Phone (1) comes with a 6.55-inch, FHD+ OLED display. It has a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels and a 500 nits brightness. Peak brightness tops out at 1,200nits. The display on the Phone (1) is a little unique in that it’s a flexible OLED panel. No – the screen is not curved, it’s flat. However, the design team opted for a flexible panel to bring a sense of symmetry to the face of the phone. The flexible display allowed them to bend the connectors backwards which allowed the display to be more symmetrical. It has support for HDR+ with 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz sampling rate.

All of these specs are powered by a 4,500mAh battery which Nothing touts to provide more than a day’s battery life. It also supports 33W fast charging over USB-C with support for PowerDelivery 3.0. It also has support for 15W Qi wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging. According to Nothing, the Phone (1) will have a complete charge in 70 minutes with wired charging and in 120 minutes when charged wirelessly.

The Glyph Interface

The one feature which sets the Nothing Phone (1) apart from the competition is the Glyph Interface. The interface is essentially a series of LED lights which will illuminate according to different setting which the user can customise. The Glyph Interface is also Nothing’s approach to allowing users to know who’s contacting them even when in silent mode.

For now, the Glyphs can be customised to flash to help identify specific contacts. It’s also a complement to the silent mode on the Phone (1). Simply flipping the phone over with glyphs up will put phone in silent mode. The Glyphs will then flash when calls come in and if the call comes from a user defined caller, the pattern of the flashing will follow the customized one.
