OnePlus Nord 2T 5G Hits Malaysian Shores for MYR 1,899 Onward!

In the early days of OnePlus, they have always adopted the moniker of a ‘flagship killer’. They were offering flagship level smartphones at a much lower price point. Over the years though, things have changed a little. While their flagships have gotten much better, as per flagships in the modern era, their price points have also gone higher than before. Their flagships smartphones can no longer be called ‘flagship killers’. They are just flagships now.

The ‘flagship killer’ moniker did not die though with the introduction of the OnePlus’ Nord mid-range smartphone. The first Nord was through and through a mid-range smartphone. It offered a mid-range smartphone experience that is rather close or comparable to most flagships in the modern era though. It was also offered at a much lower price point.

Of course, the first-generation Nord, however good it was, must be replaced with a new one. The latest one of the bunch is the Nord 2T 5G. Welcome to the flagship experience, but at a fraction of the price.

At MYR 1,899, it is not the cheapest mid-range smartphone you can find in the market. At the same time, on paper, it could be one of the most value packed smartphones you can find in its segment.

For starters you get MediaTek’s Dimensity 1300 5G system on a chip (SoC). On paper at least, the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful SoC in its class. It also packs improved AI and imaging capabilities for improved photo and video processing. Thanks to the new SoC, videos can be taken in HDR as well. Working with Sony’s DOL-HDR technology brightness, colours, and even contrasts in videos are improved greatly for natural looking videos with accurate colours. You can also shoot videos at 960fps slow motion with the new processing power from the SoC.

Alongside the 3GHz clocked SoC you may find a 12GB (up to) RAM for that smooth and snappy multitasking mode. When you need more, the clever Oxygen OS 12.1 can allocate up to 5GB of your 256GB (up to) storage as temporary RAM for even better experience. For more stable connectivity on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the device packs Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Hybrid 2.0 technology.

Class-Topping Display

OnePlus Nord 2T 5G Launch 02

Displaying Oxygen OS 12.1 on top of Android 12 in all its glory is a large 6.43-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display. The AMOLED panel refreshes at up to 90Hz for that extra smooth feel when scrolling through the interface. With HDR10+ support also, movies with HDR support should look better than good.

Super Cameras

OnePlus Nord 2T 5G Launch 13

Out the back is the same 50-Megapixel shooter you can find on OnePlus’ falgship OnePlus 10 Pro. The Sony IMX766 features a large 1/1.56-inch sensor with optical image stabilisation that allows for more light to be captured for more natural looking and better detailed photos. On the side, there is an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide camera for when you need more things to fit into the display. Out the front is also the same 32-Megapixel shooter you can find on the OnePlus 10 Pro.

Thanks to the Dimensity 1300 SoC’s improved camera AI performance, the OnePlus Nord 2T 5G’s camera can shoot even better in low-light conditions. Of course, the fact that the larger 50-Megapixel sensor allows for 56% more light to be captured helps with low-light photography as well.

Long Lasting, Fast Charging

OnePlus Nord 2T 5G Launch 03

To keep the Nord 2T 5G running an entire day and more is a large 4,500 mAh built-in battery. If that is not enough to keep you going, the device features SuperVOOC ultra-fast charging technology that charges the device at up to 80W. At that kind of speed, the device can be charged from nothing to 100% in a single 27-minute charge. It also supposedly takes only 15-minutes for a charge that lasts an entire day.

Price and Availability

The OnePlus Nord 2T 5G will be available at OnePlus authorised retailers, their own webstore, and their official online stores on Shopee and Lazada from the 19th of July 2022 onward. It comes in either Gray Shadow (only 12GB + 256GB) and Jade Fog (only 8GB + 128GB). The Nord 2T 5G will set you back MYR 2,099 and MYR 1,899 respectively. More on the OnePlus Nord 2T 5G can be found on their website.

MediaTek Takes on Flagships with Dimensity 9000+

The absolute king of the hill right now when it comes to raw processing power on a smartphone platform is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system on a chip (SoC). It is also what everybody, at least in the Android world, wants in their flagship smartphones currently. It is the most powerful SoC your smartphone can get today with only the Samsung Exynos as a distant challenger. They are introducing a new one too, very soon.

The second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC is not coming until the end of the year, as far as we know. In the meantime, there is MediaTek making their steps in high-end smartphone chips.

To be fair, the name MediaTek does not bring a lot of confidence in terms of high-end SoC for mobile applications. They are mostly known for their budget friendly SoCs in entry-level and mid-range smartphones. In that regards though, MediaTek’s SoCs have been solid performers in their class, in some cases probably better than what you can expect from price equivalent Qualcomm devices.

The new Dimensity 9000+ from MediaTek is their hope that the “budget king” perception ends. It is also MediaTek’s most powerful SoC to date with 5G in tow. The new Dimensity, in this case, goes head-to-head with Qualcomm’s current best.

At its core is the ARM Cortex-X2 architecture, the same one the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 boasts in their Kryo CPUs. The single ARM Cortex-X2 core works with three powerful Cortex-A710 cores and low-power high-efficiency Cortex-A510 cores. The 4nm octa-core CPU arrangement makes ARM’s v9 architecture.

Besides the obvious CPU and GPU improvements, and 5G capabilities the SoC comes with a slew of compelling upgrades. One of which is LPDDR5X support with 8MB L3 CPU cache and 6MB system cache support for new-generation smartphones with ultra-fast memory. Instead of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that is widely boasted by its competitors, MediaTek opted for something a little more practical in a dedicated Application Processor Unit (APU 5.0) for all its A.I. purposes.

MediaTek also packs a powerful imaging processor withing the Dimensity 9000+. They call it the MediaTek Imagiq 790. Rivaling the Qualcomm’s own image processor, the new processor supports up to 18-bit HDR-ISP at up to 320-Megapixel. Of course, you there is no camera sensor in the world currently that packs that many pixels into an area less than an inch. It is good to know that you can super sample your photos to up to 320-Megapixel though.

The Imagiq 790 also allows the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ equipped devices to record three videos simultaneously at up to 18-bit HDR formats. It even does 4K HDR with AI noise reduction, especially useful in low-light conditions.

The new MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ can support up to 144Hz WQHD+ or even 180Hz Full HD+ displays thanks to the new MiraVision 790 engine. The new display engine also has something called Intelligent Display Sync 2.0 technology that optimizes the power efficiency of the display. Thanks to the engine, the Wi-Fi display now supports up to 4K resolution at 60fps with HDR10+ streaming.

Of course, the latest and greatest SoC cannot be the latest and greatest if it does not pack the latest connectivity and networking technology. For that the 3GPP Release-16 5G modem can hit downlink speeds of up to 7Gbps. The new SoC also supports the latest WiFi 6E standards, new Bluetooth 5.3 standards, and even a new more accurate GNSS.

MediaTek is expecting their new Dimensity 9000+ to make its way to flagship devices starting Q3 2022. As mentioned, the Dimensity 9000+ is meant to be a direct competitor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. At the same time, the second-generation Snapdragon 8 is meant to be announced by Q4 2022. How the Dimensity 9000+ will fare against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 remains to be seen. We think you might have to wait for the first Dimensity 9000+ devices to roll out. There are no confirmed devices sporting the new Mediatek flagship SoC currently too.

Samsung’s Galaxy M53 5G Available for Pre-order in Malaysia

Samsung’s Galaxy M lineup was initially launched back in 2019 to serve an online-only market alongside the Galaxy A series. However, it seems like the Galaxy M is starting to encroach upon the Galaxy A series territory with its latest release – the Galaxy M53 5G.

The new smartphone comes with a 6.7-inch, FHD+ SuperAMOLED+ display. It comes with a resolution of 1080×2408 pixels and also Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It also supports a 120Hz refresh rate. The Galaxy M53 will be running on the MediaTek Dimensity 900 processor with support for 5G connectivity. The 6nm processor promises more efficient power management which should mean better battery life with the 5000mAh battery.

The Galaxy M53 5G comes with a quad-camera setup for its main camera. The main camera sensor is a 108-megapixel wide angle sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. This is complemented by an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, a 2-megapixel macro camera sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. On the front is a 32-megapixel sensor for all your selfie needs.

Connectivity-wise, it’s capable of Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi 6 connectivity and your regular GPS connectivity. It has support for 25W fast charging via its USB-C port.

However, that’s not where the phone encroaches on Galaxy A territory; the phone is now available for pre-order from Senheng for MYR1,999. That’s just shy of the MYR2,099 of the Galaxy A73 and more expensive than the Galaxy A53. While the Galaxy A does offer more in terms of software and features, the Galaxy M53 does have a lot of the software features that we see in the Galaxy A and Galaxy S series. So, where does the line stand with the Galaxy A and Galaxy M? Will you be getting it?

TECNO Enters the Malaysian Smartphone Market with Their Phantom X Flagship Smartphone at MYR 1,499

Before we go on, no we haven’t heard too much of TECNO. Yes, technically TECNO is new to the smartphone industry. Yes, it is TECNO’s first smartphone to enter Malaysia. No, we do not know why any new players would want to compete in the current smartphone market landscape.

Now we got that out of the way, let us look at what they just came up with, the Phantom X. Well, when we said they just came up with it, the device was technically launched by TECNO in the middle of 2021. The said device launched first in India and the later to the rest of the world, now Malaysia. While it is a new device in Malaysia, it is technically an outdated device by the time we get our hands on one. No matter though, modern outdated devices are still full of features and are still good enough to at least last a few software updates, so it is not like you are missing out on that much.

It is priced at MYR 1,499, which is relatively little ask for a modern smartphone by any standards. While the price range puts it squarely in the entry-level mid-range smartphone segment, TECNO claims that this device is, in fact, a flagship smartphone. At least on paper, the device looks the part.

Flagship Performance

RM 1,499 buys you a MediaTek Helio G95 System on A Chip (SoC). While it does not sound like much, the MediaTek 12nmm SoC is still powerful enough to perform like modern flagships (not necessarily in gaming terms). Sadly, it does not support 5G. Then again, how many smartphones in the sub-MYR 1,500 category does?

Alongside the SoC, there is 8GB of RAM that can be expanded to up to 13GB. The extra 5GB is borrowed from 256GB of on-board storage that is offered on the device. If 256GB of storage feels a little constrictive, you can also expand via the dedicated MicroSD card slot that is more of feature now than anything else.

Immersive Display

TECNOPhan1

Wrapping the internals are 3D curved glass panels that is held together an aluminium frame, an industry standard today. Out the front is a Corning Gorilla Glass that encases 6.7-inch of AMOLED goodness. The AMOLED panel offers Full HD+ in resolution and up to 90Hz in refresh rate. In theory, the combination should give you a smooth and immersive experience with Android 11 with HIOS 7.6 overlay.

5 Cameras

TECNOPhan3
Source: TECNO

Parked on the top left side of the display is a punch hole that houses two cameras. It is one high-resolution 48-Megapixel main selfie camera for those extra crisp and detailed self-portraits. For a group photo, you get an 8-Megapixel ultrawide shooter beside it.

TECNOPhan2
Source: TECNO

Out the first-in-industry etched textured glass back are three cameras. The main shooter is an impressive 50-Megapixel camera with a large 1/1.3-inch sensor for the best-in-class image clarity and detail. It should perform better in low-light conditions too, with a larger sensor to capture more light naturally. The main camera is flanked with a 120o ultra-wide camera with 8-Megapixel sensor behind the glass. There is also a 13-Megapixel telephoto sensor at 50mm, which we can safely say is a more of a portrait lens than anything else.

Long Battery Life

TECNOPhan6
Source: TECNO

To keep everything running all day long and more is a large 4,700mAh built-in battery. The battery is rated to last up to 30 days in standby conditions, up to 16 hours in video streaming, and even 9 hours in continuous video conferencing. When your battery is running low, you get up to 33W in charging speeds as well to charge your device from nothing to full within an hour.

Price and Availability

The TECNO Phantom X is now available at all their authorised stores and retailers across Malaysia. As mentioned, the device is priced at MYR 1,499. You can get your hands on one in two colour options – Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Monet’s Summer. To celebrate TECNO’s entry into Malaysia and its launch of the Phantom X, the first 2,000 buyers of the device are entitled to a complementary TECNO buds wireless earphones. For more information on the TECNO Phantom X, you can visit their website.

OPPO’s Reno7 Series Officially Unveiled in China

OPPO’s Reno series seems to spawn more and more iterations. Barely six months after the release of the OPPO Reno 6 series, the company has officially unveiled the OPPO Reno 7 series in mainland China. The new version of the Reno smartphones continues to inherit the line’s focus on photography and remains firmly in the mid-range territory.

oppo reno 7 pro in hand

The new OPPO Reno 7 series comes with an all-new design that ditches curves in favour of a more blocky design. However, the first thing you will notice isn’t the overall design, but the camera module which has been totally redesigned. The new Reno 7 series has three entries (for now): the Reno 7 5G, the Reno 7 Pro 5G and the Reno 7 SE 5G. Yep – that’s right – the whole Reno series now comes with 5G connectivity.

Reno7 Pro 5G

The other big change that OPPO has made is the notification LED which is now surrounding the camera on the Reno 7 Pro 5G. If you’ve been an Android user since the beginning, you’d be familiar with the notification LED. This has in recent years become smaller and smaller and even disappeared on some devices. However, with the Reno 7 Pro, the light is now making a unique comeback around the camera module of the smartphone.

oppo reno 7 pro

The Reno 7 Pro comes with a Mediatek Dimensity 1200-Max with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM paired with 256GB of internal storage. It has a 6.55-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with HDR10+ and Gorilla Glass 5. The display also has a 90Hz refresh rate.

When it comes to the camera, the Reno 7 Pro 5G comes with a triple camera module. The main sensor on the module is a 50-megapixel Sony IMX 766 with an f/1.6 aperture. This is complemented by an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a 2-megapixel macro sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The selfie camera is a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 sensor with an f/2.4 aperture.

The 4,500 mAh battery powering the smartphone is also capable of 65W fast charging. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Reno7 5G

The Reno7 5G will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G. This is complemented by 8GB or 12GB of RAM with up to 256GB of internal storage. It will have a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate as well Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

oppo reno 7

On the camera front, the main triple sensor setup replaces the 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 with a 64-megapixel sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. It still retains the same macro and ultrawide sensor. On the front, is the same 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 sensor. The Reno 7 5G will be powered by a 4,500mAh battery but will only support 60W fast charging.

Reno7 SE 5G

The Reno7 SE, on the other hand, will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 900 paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. It also has the same 6.43-inch display as the Reno 7.

oppo reno 7 se

On the camera front, however, the Reno 7 comes with a triple camera module with the 48-megapixel Sony IMX581 sensor as the main sensor. This is complemented with a 2-megapixel macro sensor and a 2-megapixel portrait sensor. On the front is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX471.

The SE is powered by a 4,500mAh battery with support 33W fast charging.

Pricing & availability

The series will be running Android 12 based ColorOS12. All variants will be available in Morning Gold, Midnight Black and Star Rain Wish (Blue).

The Reno 7 will be available in three variants. The 8GB + 128GB version will cost CN¥2,699 (MYR1,787.88), the 8GB + 256GB version will cost CN¥2,999 (MYR1,986.61) while the 12GB + 256GB version will cost CN¥3,299 (MYR2,185.34).

The Reno 7 SE will be available in 8GB +128GB and 8GB+256GB versions. The former will cost CN¥ 2,199 (MYR1,456.67) while the latter will be priced at CN¥ 2,399 (MYR1,589.39).

The OPPO Reno6 Series Lands in Malaysia

OPPO renewed its Reno series today with the release of two new entries into the lineup: the OPPO Reno6 5G and Reno6 Z 5G. The two new phones bring a renewed focus on OPPO’s camera technologies and the company’s prowess in creating smartphones with long-lasting battery life.

The new OPPO Reno6 series will be running on MediaTek’s Dimensity processors. The Reno6 5G will be running on the new MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC (System on a Chip) while the Reno6 Z will be running on MediaTek’s 800U 5G SoC. Both are octa-core processors which are capable of processing data at speeds of up to 2.4GHz. Of course, the Dimensity 900 is slightly more capable with larger, more efficient cores. Both of the smartphones also come with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display. The Reno6 5G has the additional benefit of a 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling rate.

Keeping Smartphone Photography in Focus

OPPO’s Reno series has carved a name for itself when it comes to cameras. The Reno6 series aims to continue that tradition. The two models come with similar setups; the Reno6 5G comes with a triple sensor setup. It has a 64-megapixel main camera sensor which is paired with an 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. These are complemented with a colour temperature sensor for better colour accuracy. The Reno6 Z, on the other hand, comes with the same but lacks the colour temperature sensor. Both have a 32-megapixel selfie camera.

OPPO is touting even better portrait pictures thanks to enhanced technology in the Reno6 series. The new smartphones come with new Focus tracking which has never been done in an OPPO smartphone to date. The feature will enable users to identify and track subjects to keep them in focus. The feature also helps with stabilization to keep the video perfectly steady.

03. OPPO Reno6 Series Launch
Source: OPPO

The Reno6 series is also pushing portrait photography when it comes to smartphones. The new entries will be able to take Portrait Beautification in videos which will blur the background slightly while keeping your subject in focus. The technology is driven by AI-enabled algorithms which track 193 different facial points in video mode. Together with this portrait photography on the Reno6 is enhanced with Bokeh Flare Portrait which will allow users to capture pictures with light effects – similar to those from professional cameras.

Powered for All Day Performance

Together with the camera technology and cutting edge processors, the Reno6 series is also expanding on OPPO’s RAM Expansion technology. The technology, which first debuted on the Find X series, allows the smartphone to extend its built-in 8GB of RAM with up to 5GB of additional RAM from the internal storage. This allows the phone to dynamically adapt to the needs of its users while maintaining a smooth User experience.

The Reno6 5G is powered by a 4,300mAh battery with support for 65W SuperVOOC 2.0. This charging technology allows the phone to get to 100% with just 28 minutes of charge. The Reno6 Z, however, comes with a slightly larger 4,310mAH battery with support for 30W SuperVOOC Flash Charge 4.0 which allows it to be charged in 49 minutes.

vivo Unveils the V21 Series – For a More Discerning Selfie

Have you ever thought; “hmmm, my selfie camera is not powerful enough; I cannot get a good self portrait and therefore my social media is incomplete”? What vivo launched in Malaysia last night might be your answer to great looking selfies with superb details. They launched the new V21 series smartphone.

The new vivo V21 series packs a very powerful camera system. Out the back is a powerful 64-Megapixel main camera that is flanked by an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 2-Megapixel Macro shooter. The highlight though is the 44-Megapixel front-facing camera that you can find on above the display in small notch.

The 44-megapixel camera also comes with its own Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) combined with Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) technology to produce selfies like you’ve never seen on a smartphone before. There is also AI Night Portrait mode to ensure that your photos look detailed and noiseless even in low-light conditions combined with f/2.0 aperture for even more light to be captured. If there is still not enough light around you, there are the Dual Selfie Spotlight to light your face combined with the screen’s soft light feature.

The high-resolution cameras also means that both the front and the back cameras of the vivo V21 can shoot videos at 4K resolution. That also means you can rely on the front camera to even do your own vlogs with the vivo V21. Either that or shoot great looking TikTok videos or Instagram Reels.

You need some power to get smooth 4K video recording experience though. Some power is also needed to keep both the front and back cameras happy and shooting quickly. That power is found in the form of a powerhouse that is the MediaTek Dimensity 800U (Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G for V21e) System on a Chip (SoC). The powerful processor is supported by an 8GB RAM for all kinds of multitasking needs and 128GB of storage to ensure all your photos has somewhere to go.

Viewing your photos before you post them are very important too. That is why vivo has fitted the V21 with a 6.44-inch AMOLED display. The display boasts Full HD in resolution with 90Hz refresh rate to give you that really smooth feel while scrolling through the interface. 90Hz is great for gaming too, of course.

To keep the device running all day is a 4,000mAh battery kept within the slim and svelte 7.29mm (7.39mm for V21e) glass and aluminium body. It even charges at 33W too, in case you need a quick charge before you leave home or the office. The 33W FlashCharge technology is of course delivered via the USB Type-C port of the device.

The vivo V21 series is now available for pre-order (until 4th may 2021) via vivo’s own E-Store, authorized dealers, vivo concept stores, and vivo flagship stores on Shopee and Lazada. The new selfie focused smartphone will be available in Dusk Blue and Sunset Dazzle (Roman Black and Diamond Flare for V21e). The vivo V21 will set you back MYR 1,399 and the V21e will set you back MYR 1,299. If you do pre-order a unit of the vivo V21 or the V21e, you are eligible for a 1-year extended warranty, 1-year screen crack protection, an MYR 50 instant rebate, and an exclusive gift that amounts to MYR 699 and MYR 599 in total value respectively. For more information on the vivo V21 series, you can head over to vivo’s website.

Samsung Brings More Value with The Galaxy A32

Together with their recently unveiled Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72, Samsung also took the covers off their new Galaxy A32. The Galaxy A32 maintains the ethos of the new Galaxy A series but looks to bring even more value. That said, it does compromise a little bit more when it comes to specs and features.

The Galaxy A32 comes with a MediaTek Helio G80 with 128GB of onboard storage and 8GB of RAM. Like its bigger siblings, the A32 also supports up to 1TB of extra memory through its microSD card slot. It will come with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display with support for 90Hz refresh rates.

Similar to the A52 and A72, it comes with a quad camera setup. It has a 64-megapixel main sensor with Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF). This is complemented by an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, a 5-megapixel macro sensor and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. On the front, it comes with a 20-megapixel fixed focus camera. The camera setup on the Galaxy A32 support recording 4K UHD videos at 30fps.

The A32 also comes with all the bells an whistles from the new A52 and A72. This includes KNOX integration and One UI 3.0. It has a large 5,000mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging.

Pricing & Availability

The Samsung Galaxy A32 will be available in Awesome Black, Awesome White, Awesome Blue and Awesome Violet. No pricing has been officially announced just yet.
