New partnerships and pro-investment reforms announced as tenth Mongolia Economic Forum takes place in Ulaanbaatar

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia, July 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The tenth Mongolia Economic Forum (MEF) continues in Ulaanbaatar today amidst the announcement by the Government of two new bodies to support investment into the country and of new partnerships with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and leading geo-location company What3Words. This also follows the recent upgrading of Mongolia’s projected economic growth in 2023.

The Prime Minister of Mongolia speaks at the 2023 Mongolia Economic Forum in Ulaanbaatar
The Prime Minister of Mongolia speaks at the 2023 Mongolia Economic Forum in Ulaanbaatar

2,200 guests from around the world – including leading representatives from global businesses, the third sector and multilateral organisations – are gathering for this two-day event (9-10 July) to discuss how they can work in partnership with the Mongolian Government to deliver its goal of doubling the country’s GDP by 2030 and establishing Mongolia as a leading country in the region by the middle of the century.

Vision 2050 and the New Recovery Policy announced in 2022 set a clear strategic direction for Mongolia’s sustainable development to inform the Government’s wider policy programme. This direction has enabled rapid progress to date and provides the foundation for the latest round of milestones announced this year at the Forum.

This morning the Government announced the creation of the Private Partnership Centre and the Investment and Trade Agency, to support more investment into the country. The Investment and Trade Agency, for example, will provide ‘a bridge for business in Mongolia‘, providing assistance in the protection of investors’ legitimate rights and interests, helping expand import diversification and to improve the competitiveness of import substituting industries.

In addition, in his keynote address to the Forum this morning, Minister for the Economy and Development and Deputy Prime Minister Khurelbaatar Chimed outlined the opportunities for investment that exist in Mongolia and the Government’s intention to amend the Draft Law on Investment to help facilitate new investment partnerships.

Figures show that the Government’s focus on removing barriers to growth through its US$ 49 billion New Recovery Policy – unveiled in December 2021 – and Vision 2050 blueprint are continuing to deliver results. Following above-forecast growth of 4.8% in 2022 – 1.1% of which was attributable to the New Recovery Policy – and growth of 7.9% in the first quarter of this year, the country’s growth forecast for 2023 has been upgraded from 5% to 6%. The growth forecast for 2024 is now 6.5%.

This growth, particularly following the pandemic, was made possible by working closely with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Through working together, we achieved remarkable vaccination coverage of Mongolians during the pandemic, with 90% of the target group receiving at least the first dose. This helped us end COVID-19 restrictions in February 2022, and ensured that our mortality rate was five times lower than in other countries. We are delighted that Dr Ghebreyesus has been able to attend this year’s MEF.

A key part of our ‘Vision 2050’ plan is fostering a culture of well-being. Since May 2022, the Government has run a campaign to encourage take-up of early screening and diagnosis services, a key milestone in encouraging the proactive management of our people’s healthcare. I am delighted that 1 million citizens have taken part in this initiative so far.

Two announcements of significant new investment in Mongolia have also been made over recent days, underlining the benefits being delivered by the Government’s pro-growth agenda:

  • The Government of Mongolia has entered into an unprecedented alliance with SpaceX, enabling millions of internet users in Mongolia to access high-speed internet through Starlink, particularly benefiting people in rural areas and supporting Mongolia’s digital transformation
  • The Government of Mongolia has also forged new strategic alliances with technology company What3Words, supporting the use of Optical Character Recognition technology to streamline postal services, and enabling the increased visibility of Mongolia’s heritage sites and key tourism spots

The Prime Minister of Mongolia, Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai, comments:

“I am delighted to welcome guests from around the world to the tenth Mongolia Economic Forum to discuss how we can work in partnership to unlock the economic potential of Mongolia – currently one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

“This follows two major announcements of additional investment in Mongolia, and the commencement of underground production at the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine with Rio Tinto in March, demonstrating Mongolia’s growing attractiveness to international investors.

“Our impressive recovery from the pandemic, supported by the Government’s New Recovery Policy, provides a strong foundation for tackling long-term barriers to sustained high levels of growth. I welcome the opportunity that the Forum provides to discuss how greater collaboration can help us make even more progress in the years ahead.”

This year’s MEF, the tenth since the inaugural Forum in 2010, is being co-hosted by the Prime Minister of Mongolia, Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rio Tinto Group, Dominic Barton, under the theme of ‘Welcome to Mongolia‘, emphasising the Government’s commitment to offering a warm welcome to visitors to the country whether they’re travelling for business or tourism. In his own keynote address to the Forum this morning, Mr Barton emphasised that the vision, ambition, resource, and talent that Mongolians have can achieve anything, adding that the strong economic conditions of a decade ago had returned to the country.

Highlights of this year’s MEF include:

  • A dedicated ‘MEF Youth’ event, exploring how the talent and potential of the majority of Mongolia’s population who are under thirty years old can be harnessed to help the country benefit from the technological and economic advances of the 21st century
  • Following the Government’s declaration of 2023 as the ‘Year of Anti-Corruption’, a series of events focused on convening experts from key international organisations to discuss how progress to date in this area can be built upon and Mongolia can learn from best practice around the world. This follows the number of cases referred to the courts by the anti-corruption agency that are resolved having risen from 26% in 2019 to 43% in 2022
  • Earlier today, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and leading global environmental organisation The Nature Conservancy announced at MEF the launch later this month of a Conservation Trust Fund (CTF). By establishing a more sustainable system for the financing of conservation projects in Mongolia, the CTF will help Mongolia achieve its sustainable development and climate change goals
  • Four plenary sessions and fifteen sub-sessions on topics as varied as the digital economy, food manufacturing, sustainable growth, urban development and capital markets, are being held

A number of Government Ministers are available for media interviews, including in English.

CJ Logistics and Korea Ocean Business Corporation to Invest up to $457 Million in Creating Large-scale Logistics Centers in the US

  • Large-scale logistics centers will be built in strategic logistics and distribution hubs, including Chicago and New Jersey.
  • CJ Logistics will provide the land for these centers, which collectively cover an area equal to 50 soccer fields, while KOBC will secure the necessary funding for the construction.
  • The logistics centers are expected to serve as strategic hubs, facilitating import and export transloading as part of global, end-to-end supply chain solutions, and as an export forward base for South Korean companies to North America.
  • The project is a first-of-its-kind public-private collaboration designed to expand the CJ Logistics North America supply chain.
  • CJ Logistics is expanding and optimizing its operations model to meet local demand and respond to the needs of consumer goods and industrial materials markets.

DES PLAINES, Ill., June 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — CJ Logistics, a leading innovative supply chain and technology company in South Korea, has announced a strategic partnership with the Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) to construct large-scale logistics centers in the United States through a public-private collaboration. With a total investment of approximately $457 million (KRW 600 billion), these logistics centers will prioritize handling the import and export cargo of global and South Korean companies, facilitating their overseas expansion and trade activation. Additionally, this initiative aims to strengthen the economic alliance between the U.S. and South Korea by fostering local investment and job creation.

The first-of-its-kind public-private partnership between CJ Logistics and KOBC, a South Korean government entity, will increase South Korean investment in the U.S. and create new jobs for Americans.

The venture, known as the “North American Project,” entails the construction of large-scale logistics centers across three sites owned by CJ Logistics America, located in key logistics and distribution hubs such as Chicago and New Jersey, totaling 3,875,000 square feet. These sites collectively span an area equivalent to 50 international standard soccer fields. While CJ Logistics plans to contribute the land, KOBC will secure funding for the construction of the logistics centers.

CJ Logistics will assume responsibility for the operation of these three logistics centers, with a primary focus on handling the import and export cargo of global and South Korean companies and e-commerce sellers, thereby supporting their market entry into the U.S. The investment commitment agreement is expected to be signed within the third quarter of this year, and construction is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of next year, with a phased completion targeted from the first half of 2026 to 2027.

In a ceremony held on June 19, Sin-ho Kang, CEO of CJ Logistics, and Yang-soo Kim, CEO of KOBC, signed an agreement to implement this project at CJ Logistics America’s office in Des Plaines, Illinois. Following the agreement, the two CEOs and executives of CJ Logistics and KOBC visited the planned site for the logistics center.

CJ Logistics and KOBC have also committed to active cooperation not only on this project but also on investments in logistics infrastructure in the U.S. and other countries to enhance the global logistics competitiveness of CJ Logistics and South Korea.

Strategically located in three major U.S. cities or logistics hubs, CJ Logistics’ sites offer significant advantages. Elwood, Illinois, adjacent to the terminals of BNSF and Union Pacific, the largest freight railroad companies in the US, provides efficient transportation and delivery nationwide within one to two days via road and rail networks. Des Plaines, Illinois, is located near Chicago, one of the three largest cities in the U.S. and major consumer markets, as well as O’Hare International Airport, the largest freight airport in the country. Secaucus, New Jersey, situated near New York Harbor, JFK Airport, and New York City, offers access to another major consumer market.

With the development of these strategic hubs, CJ Logistics is optimizing its global logistics model to meet customer needs for integrated, end-to-end supply chain solutions. It will generate synergy by connecting the newly constructed logistics centers with its existing network of 57 operational logistics centers across the US. This connection will act as a catalyst for innovative growth in the business conducted in the US.

Moreover, with the vision of leading the global logistics industry with world-class technology, CJ Logistics will continue to accelerate and introduce advanced technologies such as automation, big data and AI, leveraging its TES (Technology, Engineering, Systems & Solutions) applications which have been successfully developed in South Korea, and are underway in North America. The company plans to enhance efficiency through the implementation of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR), Autonomous Fork Lifts (AFL), and smart packaging systems.

The North America Project holds significant meaning as it represents a joint effort between a government entity and a private enterprise to support South Korean companies’ entry into the US, the world’s leading economic market, and raise their global competitiveness.

While South Korean companies have made recent investments in various sectors such as electric vehicles, batteries, and semiconductors in the U.S., this collaboration between the public and private sectors is notable as the first of its kind. The project is projected to generate an investment of approximately $457 million and create 500 permanent jobs, along with additional employment opportunities, contributing to the strengthening of the U.S.-Korea economic alliance.

Commenting on the project, Mr. Kang, CEO of CJ Logistics, said, “We are committed to supporting our North America customer base, South Korean companies and e-commerce sellers as they enter the U.S. market. By utilizing our cutting-edge logistics infrastructure and operational capabilities, we aim to increase customer value, serve as a strategic partner to our customers who can benefit from global and multimodal solutions, and expand the ‘K-Wave’ into the business sector.”

Mr. Kim, CEO of KOBC, added, “The construction of logistics hubs in the U.S. will enhance the competitiveness of South Korea’s global supply chain and create value-added supply chain services through integration with maritime logistics.” He further emphasized, “We will continue to explore opportunities to enhance global logistics competitiveness by leveraging the resources, capabilities, and expertise of both sides.”

In the first quarter of this year, South Korea’s exports to the U.S. recorded $28.6 billion, a 3.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The U.S. ranked as South Korea’s largest trade surplus country during this period, with a trade surplus of $7.2 billion. E-commerce exports to the U.S. also saw significant growth, reaching $323 million in the previous year, a 23.8% increase compared to the previous year, according to the Korea Trade Statistics Promotion Institute.

Vectorworks and Solibri Inside Integration to Save Architects Time and Money

New, SaaS-Based Solution from Solibri Provides In-Design Model Checking for Vectorworks Users.

COLUMBIA, MD., Jan. 23, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Global design and BIM software provider Vectorworks, Inc. has partnered with fellow Nemetschek Group brand Solibri to offer users a new way to deliver quality designs confidently. With Solibri Inside, you can validate, report and modify design errors in an easy-to-use model checker directly inside Vectorworks. Created with designers’ needs in mind, the new feature helps to reduce risk with fewer errors and improves efficiency with fewer file exchanges, saving architects, their consultants and clients valuable time and money.

“Quality assurance is a critical component of BIM, but many architecture firms have historically lacked a robust way to accurately and efficiently check their models,” said Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. “We’re proud to alleviate this pain point for our users in collaboration with Solibri through this integrated, flexible and time-saving solution. Solibri Inside provides automatic rule-based checking in a convenient application, so architects can confidently deliver high-quality, precise designs every time.”

This innovative feature now works within the latest version, Vectorworks 2023 Service Pack 3, eliminating the need for users to open another software platform to perform basic model checking. Users can ensure their BIM models comply with building regulations, national and international standards or a specific project’s BIM requirements seamlessly before sharing with other project stakeholders within their workflow.

“Today sees another step towards ‘better BIM,'” said Solibri CEO Ville Kyytsönen. “Solibri’s mission is to improve the quality of digital construction. BIM is essential in this mission – it is the ‘single source of truth.’ Solibri is improving the quality of models by bringing quality checking as part of the model authoring process. With Solibri Inside, we improve the process by enabling more QA early in the process before coordination takes place.”

Vectorworks users can install the plug-in now through the Partner Installation Palette. The first release of Solibri Inside comes with a free standard package for checking door and window clearances and the supporting Level of Information (LOI) in your Vectorworks building information model. Users can unlock additional features by registering a Solibri Inside account. With a Solibri Inside account, users can add Premium paid packages, giving users the ability to create customized rule checks to meet their project’s BIM requirements.
