The Central Axis of Beijing: The cultural charm of balance and harmony

On Jun. 13, the city of Beijing held a livestream event to celebrate the Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, introducing the city’s Central Axis. Millions of netizens from around the world watched the livestream online to learn about the architecture and culture of Beijing.

The Central Axis is a north-south line that runs through the center of Beijing. This 7.8-kilometer axis was formed 800 years ago during the Yuan Dynasty. Along the line, the old city of Beijing was divided in two, with buildings on both sides arranged symmetrically.

The Central Axis is not an actual road, but a harmonious cluster of distinct buildings and sites. The best-known attractions along the axis include the Palace Museum, the Temple of Heaven, and the Drum and Bell Tower to name a few. Quadrangular courtyards, or Siheyuan, and the narrow streets lined with those courtyards, or hutong, are both icons of Beijing that are mostly scattered around the axis. It is more than fair to say the Central Axis is the epitome of quintessential old Beijing.

Moreover, building complexes along the central axis showcase ancient Chinese architecture and embody Chinese philosophy on the relationship between heaven and mankind. The main structures of the Temple of Heaven are circular, symbolizing the relationship of heaven and earth at the heart of ancient Chinese cosmology. The reciprocal concepts of Yin and Yang, right and left, civil and military, as well as the dichotomy of simple dialectics, can be found everywhere in the design of the Forbidden City. The symmetrical layout of the Central Axis, which echoes the golden mean in Chinese ideology, is still widely applied in urban planning and architectural design to this day.

The Central Axis’ beauty lies in its balance and harmony. In the past 800 years, the city of Beijing has gone through lots of changes, yet the Central Axis has been kept in good repair.

Some spots have been repurposed as times have changed. The once important ritual sites for the imperial family have become parks. Shichahai, once a stretch of the Grand Canal, has now emerged as a chic hangout for young people. As the city grows, the Central Axis continues to extend. The Olympic Park was added in the north and Daxing International Airport was built in the south. The Central Axis has been a cultural symbol for generations and will continue to be one long into the future.

Baidu Unveils Plan to Increase Investments in New Infrastructure to Power the Rise of Industrial AI

Baidu Plans to Deploy 5 Million AI Cloud Servers by 2030 and Train 5 Million AI Professionals

BEIJING, July 2, 2020 — Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) recently announced that it will increase its investments in cloud computing, AI education, AI platforms, chipsets, and data centers in the coming ten years as part of its efforts to construct “new infrastructure” for the smart economy of the future.

Under the plan, Baidu aims to have 5 million intelligent cloud servers by 2030 and train 5 million AI professionals within 5 years, which will help facilitate the widespread application of AI in transportation, city management, finance, energy, health care, and manufacturing to eventually achieve industrial intelligence.

“New infrastructure–which encompasses emerging technologies like AI, cloud computing, 5G, IoT, and blockchain–will be the driver for China’s economic development in the coming decades,” said Baidu Chief Technology Officer Haifeng Wang, underscoring the importance of the plan.

“As a world-leading AI platform company, Baidu is well positioned to make large contributions to the development of new infrastructure in China, which will support the implementation of AI applications in different industries.”

The investment plan will see Baidu deploy 5 million intelligent cloud servers by 2030, an ambitious target that would create a combined computing capability equal to seven times the total calculable computing power of the world’s existing top 500 supercomputers.

Viewing human capital as a core component of new infrastructure, Baidu also intends to train 5 million AI professionals in the next five years. Baidu has been working with more than 200 leading universities in China to develop courses related to AI and deep learning and has already trained more than 1 million AI experts.

As a developer of both AI infrastructure and AI applications, Baidu is well-positioned to contribute to building new style infrastructure, which is at the core of China’s “New Infrastructure” policy to accelerate economic growth and industrial upgrade.

Baidu has more than 7,000 published AI patent applications in China, the highest in the country. The AI open platform Baidu Brain has made available more than 250 core AI capabilities to over 1.9 million developers, while PaddlePaddle, the largest open-source deep learning platform in China, services 84,000 enterprises. A global event was launched on July 2 in Beijing to collect new ideas from around the world to address challenges in climate investment and finance.

The Climate Investment and Finance Article Call 2020 event was launched at the online ceremony for China’s National Low-carbon Day, which falls on July 2 this year.

Starting from early August, the organizing committee will collect writings on innovative concepts and industrial practices, aiming to address global challenges in climate investment and finance, and to further improve research in the field.

Li Gao, director general of the Department of Climate Change at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, delivered a keynote speech at the event, inviting scholars from both China and abroad to contribute new thoughts and share their practices.

The authors or teams are required to submit their works before Jan. 10, 2021. Upon submission, in February, an expert panel will select the best works and recommend them to cooperating journals for publication. A selection of the top authors or teams will then be invited to participate in the 2021 China Climate Investment and Finance International Forum as guest speakers to discuss relevant issues.

Li, who is also the director of Climate Investment and Finance Association (CIFA) at the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, said the expert panel will adopt a rigorous process in selecting and recommending papers.

The expert panel consists of professionals from more than 20 top universities around the world as well as 12 prestigious journals in the fields of finance, economics, energy and environmental research.

The reviewing committee is co-chaired by Xie Zhenhua, president of the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Institute of Tsinghua University, and special advisor on Climate Change Affairs of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and Ernesto Zedillo, director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, professor in the field of international economics and politics, and former president of Mexico.

According to Xie, “The expert panel will conscientiously review and select a collection of outstanding articles which meet an international standard of excellence, generate innovative findings, and potentially deliver policy influence.”

TUV Rheinland: Cyber risks for industrial plants underestimated

COLOGNE, July 2, 2020 — Cyberattacks can threaten the industrial facilities of companies even more than their IT systems. However, a holistic view of the security of industrial plants is often lacking. This is a key finding of a recent study on security in industrial companies by TUV Rheinland and the Ponemon Institute.

Operational Technology in the sights of the hackers

Operational Technology (OT) is the main target for cyberattacks on industrial plants. These are devices and systems that control or monitor industrial processes – such as motors, pumps or valves. "OT systems differ in function and technology from classic corporate IT. At the same time, successful cyberattacks on OT systems often cause particularly high levels of damage to the companies affected", explains Petr Láhner, Executive Vice President of the Business Stream Industrial Service & Cybersecurity at TUV Rheinland. "We have therefore placed the Cybersecurity of Operational Technology at the center of our study, following on from the findings of the first study on this subject in 2019".

Measures for IT and OT systems not coordinated

For the "2020 Study on the State of Industrial Security", the independent market research company Ponemon Institute surveyed more than 2,200 cybersecurity experts worldwide from the automotive, health and pharmaceutical, logistics and transport, mechanical engineering, oil and gas and utility sectors. The Ponemon Institute, based in Traverse City, Michigan, is dedicated to independent research on information and privacy management in companies.

The following results show how much cyberattacks endanger OT systems:

  • More than half of the respondents (57 percent) say that their companies firmly expect attacks on OT systems.
  • Almost half (48 percent) are convinced that cyber threats pose a greater risk to OT systems than to the IT environment.
  • Almost two thirds (63 percent) of those surveyed stated that security measures for IT and OT systems are not coordinated in their companies.
  • For almost half of the respondents (47 percent), cyber threats to OT systems have increased over the past year. These include attacks such as phishing, social engineering and extortion software ("ransomware").

"From our point of view, it is crucial that companies tailor their cybersecurity measures to the specific requirements in Operational Technology. For example, some control systems may have limited cybersecurity controls in place and could subsequently be vulnerable to cyber threats. To do this, companies have to assess their OT cyber risk and invest time and money for best effect. It is alarming that in the view of the experts surveyed, there are too few financial or professional resources available for OT security. In addition, a holistic view of the security of industrial plants is often still lacking. In an increasingly networked world, industrial plants are only really secure if both their IT and OT cybersecurity is addressed", Láhner says.
