BGI Statement in Response to Reuters Report

SHENZHEN, China, July 9, 2021 — BGI is aware of reports in Reuters regarding the company’s non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT test) – NIFTY (Non-Invasive Fetal TrisomY).

BGI’s NIPT tests have been used around the world to identify genetic conditions in pregnancy. These tests provide doctors with the scientific basis to assist millions of pregnant women, leading to better health outcomes and, in some cases, saved lives.

The research that BGI has undertaken collaboratively with some of the world’s leading academic and scientific institutions has led to major medical breakthroughs that will benefit the world for many decades to come.

As a leader in life science and gene technology, BGI is committed to improving health outcomes worldwide. That is and always has been the company’s mission. Assertions that BGI is motivated by anything other than the advancement of health outcomes are both deeply disappointing and factually incorrect.

These are the facts:

  • BGI has never been asked to provide, nor has it provided data from its NIFTY test to Chinese authorities for national security or national defense security purposes.
  • Contrary to the report by Reuters, DNA data collected from prenatal tests on women outside China are not stored in China’s gene bank. All NIPT data collected overseas are stored in BGI’s laboratory in Hong Kong and are destroyed after five years, as stipulated by General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • Contrary to assertions by Reuters, BGI’s NIPT test was developed solely by BGI – not in partnership with China’s military.
  • At no stage throughout the testing or research process does BGI have access to any identifiable personal data or the ability to match that data with personal records.
  • Wherever BGI undertakes research, the company strictly comply with local laws, guidelines, and protocols, while adhering to internationally recognized ethical standards.
  • The data privacy standards BGI applies to its research meet strict national and international requirements, including the GDPR in the European Union.
  • BGI collaborates with many academic and research organizations not just in China, but also with many of the world’s most renowned institutions in the US, UK, and Europe. These collaborations have led to significant advances in medical science that improve population health outcomes around the world.

BGI is a global organization driven by innovation, focused on precision medical research, and a desire to curb the harm of major diseases on humans worldwide.

Since its foundation in 1999, BGI has maintained a consistent track record of applying the strictest ethical standards and protection of data privacy and security. We established the Institute of Review Board of Bioethics and Biosafety (BGI-IRB) to recognize, advocate, and guide BGI’s life science research and technological applications.

We are proud of the achievements that our scientists have delivered, and we are committed to continuing to work with our partners around the globe to drive new advancements in life science and healthcare.

  • Cisco sees high levels of satisfaction among employees about leadership, organizational culture, and trust

HONG KONG, July 8, 2021 — Cisco has been ranked first in the "Best Workplaces in Hong Kong™ 2021" list. The rankings are put together based on an independent employee trust audit carried out by the Great Place to Work® organization, a global authority on workplace culture, which recognizes organizations with the most exceptional workplace culture practices.

In what has been a challenging year for companies across the world as they grappled with business disruptions and remote operations, Great Place to Work® recognized Cisco’s open and transparent work culture, and its relentless focus on employee wellbeing, as being key drivers of instilling exceptional trust among its employees.

The top ranking in Hong Kong follows Cisco’s global accolade of winning first place in both 2019 and 2020, on the global World’s Best Workplaces list by Great Place to Work® and Fortune Magazine.

Wilson Ching, General Manager of Cisco Hong Kong and Macau, said, "We are honoured and proud of the trust placed in us by our employees and of being recognized as the top place to work in Hong Kong. This award is a testament to our continuous efforts to foster a conscious culture where employees are engaged and feel supported to thrive. Our employees are our biggest differentiator, and we are committed to creating an environment where they feel empowered, and purposeful in all aspects of life."

This year’s award saw scores of companies from Hong Kong participating in the audit where employees shared their perspectives on leadership, organizational culture, and trust.

Cisco has always been committed to powering an inclusive future through innovative technology and a generous sense of corporate responsibility.  At Cisco, Conscious Culture is a way of life where management and employees are aware of the environment that they are part of, ensuring everyone feels accountable, empowered, and actively contributes to a diverse and inclusive culture where everyone feels safe and can thrive. Cisco puts employees at the heart of the business and has created the environment, characteristics and experiences that built the culture.

As a world recognized technology company, a number of rituals are practised across all Cisco teams globally to help employees stay connected and ensure a strong sense of culture. For example, every week, employees check-in with their leaders for a focused conversation about work, priorities, loves, loathes and support needed. Every quarter, leaders launch an "Engagement Pulse", a short survey to find out how team members are feeling which in turn triggers courageous conversations and reflections and helps build stronger engagement.

El Cavanagh-Lomas, Vice President, People & Communities, EMEAR & APJC, Cisco, said, "The Great Place to Work® recognition for Cisco Hong Kong is first and foremost a testament to our employees who make Cisco an amazing workplace by embodying our core values and our Conscious Culture. CPC centenary: Drawing strength from a glorious history

BEIJING, July 2, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on the CPC centenary:

On July 1, a grand gathering was held in Beijing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Over the past century, the CPC has grown from just a few dozen members to the largest political party in the world, profoundly transforming China and influencing the world.

Back in 1916, Li Dazhao, who had just returned from Waseda University in Japan, felt lost at a crossroads.

At that time, the Chinese people had suffered for more than half a century due to the decadence of Qing Dynasty’s imperial rule and foreign aggression. From the Hundred Days of Reform in 1898 to the 1911 Revolution, countless experiments failed to bring China the national independence and modernization it desired. In 1917, the October Revolution was launched in Russia, offering hope to Li Dazhao and other revolutionaries.

With preparations in place, the CPC was founded in July 1921. The new proletarian party then led the Chinese people to establish the People’s Republic of China 28 years later, completely ending the Chinese nation’s "century of humiliation."

Fast forward to the summer of 1977.

Hu Fuming, a teacher at Nanjing University, brought some classic works of Marxism and Leninism with him when he accompanied his sick wife in the hospital. There, he finished writing the outline of an article titled "Practice is the Sole Criterion for Testing Truth," which was published in May 1978. With the support of Chinese Communist leader Deng Xiaoping, the editorial gave rise to heated discussions on the standards for judging truth.

After then, the CPC re-established the guiding principles of "emancipating the mind and seeking truth from facts," and made the decision to pursue reform and opening up, thus helping China embark on a journey of rapid development and deep integration with the world.

By the end of 2020, China, home to one-fifth of the world’s population, completely eliminated extreme poverty thanks to targeted poverty alleviation strategies, making a significant contribution to global poverty reduction. The dedication of countless Party members and officials in the fight against poverty has shown that the CPC has always been committed to its original aspiration of serving the people over the past century.

Under the CPC’s leadership, China has created one miracle after another, from being bullied to becoming the world’s second largest economy, growing from scratch to become a smart manufacturing powerhouse, from having little say on the international stage to being an important promoter of world peace and development. Going forward, it is believed that the CPC will continue to remain true to its original aspiration, keep the mission well in mind, and lead the people of all ethnic groups across the country on a new journey to achieve the dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

GTI Online Summit 2021 — “5G Reshape Industries”

BARCELONA, Spain, July 2, 2021 — The GTI Online Summit 2021, with the theme of "5G Reshape Industries", was held on 30th June during MWC Barcelona 2021. High-level speakers from international organizations, operators and vertical industry partners shared their insights into the current status, cooperative practices and challenges of global 5G toB commercialization, and accelerated 5G integration with all walks of life to create new business opportunities and new digital value.

Mr. Craig Ehrlich, Chairman of GTI, delivered the welcome note. He said, "We are seeing rising awareness about the significance of digital transformation and a key role that 5G will play in accelerating this process to support economic recovery and sustainable development on a global scale. GTI has been cooperating with over 300 partners and made notable achievements in defining requirements, lowering application barriers as well as expanding the application scale."

Mr. Zhao Houlin, Secretary General of ITU, stated, "I highlighted my 4Is strategy: Infrastructure, Investments, Innovations, and Inclusiveness. I call on all of you to increase investment in ICT infrastructure, and ICT innovations, to bring ICT to all people in our planet, leave no one behind."

Mr. Gao Tongqing, Executive Vice President of China Mobile, remarked, "This June marks the second anniversary of China’s 5G commercial license issuance. The rapid development of 5G industry is attributable to the joint promotion and efforts of global industry partners. While industry innovations brought by any new technology will not be accomplished at one stroke, the journey of integrating 5G into all industries is not always so smooth either."

Mr. Alex Sinclair, CTO of GSMA, pointed out, "The dawn of the 5G era has also seen a marked change in the way that we collaborate and whom we collaborate with. Suffice it to say 5G networks are here, the interest of demand from the verticals is clearly here as well."

Dr. Soo-Jung Shin, SEVP & Head of Enterprise Group of KT, commented in his keynote speech, "There are difficulties that need to be overcome for full scale activation of 5G B2B, such as clear customer value is not provided, the slow development of devices and application services, many companies perceive 5G as a simple network rather than a platform."

Mr. Liu Jian, General Manager of Enterprise Division of China Mobile, emphasized that the application of 5G in industries has accelerated the in-depth integration of OT, IT, and CT. It not only reshaped the industry structure, but also provided new opportunities for operators’ transformation and upgrading.

Mrs. Chen Lan, President & CEO of DOCOMO Beijing Labs, noted, "We are further exploring possibilities in 5G to realize the digitalization of industries, new customer-relation and work-style reform, and investigating 6G and IOWN technologies for the further realization of a wellbeing society."

Dr. Andreas Mueller, General Chair of 5G-ACIA, commented that the biggest benefit maybe that 5G may bring is that it has the potential to become a one size fits all solution, at least for wireless connectivity in a factory. 5G is the only solution we currently see that is capable enough to support really a wide variety of different use cases, sometimes very diverse requirements at the same time.

Mr. Maxime Flament, CTO of 5GAA, noted in his keynote speech, "To make advanced safety and automated driving a reality, we need to go one step further, and the next step is 5G. 5G-V2X will make the road safer and greener for all."

Other industry players and vertical partners also spoke out at the summit about the industry progress and provided many cooperation practices and use cases.

Mr. Liu Yingshang, Deputy Chief Engineer of China Southern Power Grid, emphasized that cutting-edge 5G technology will provide strong support to a new electric power system mainly driven by new energy so as to reach peak emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.

Mr. Dai Qinghua, SVP of SANY Group, pointed out, "5G technologies, cloud computing and industrial technologies are indispensable for the development of the digital economy."

Mr. Jonas Larsson, VP and Head of Business Area Connected Products of AFRY, mentioned that the most interesting aspects of the true smart factory set up is not how digitalized and how Smart it is in absolute terms day one, but to what level it is enabling learning and development in the future iterations. Then true 5G connectivity is an important platform and enabler.

MiniTool Released Partition Wizard 12.5 – Pro Platinum Added & Data Recovery Enhanced

VANCOUVER, BC, July 2, 2021 — MiniTool Software Ltd just released Partition Wizard 12.5. This is the first cumulative update since this year and the update contents include adding Pro Platinum Edition, Improving the accuracy of FAT32 partition data recovery, and fixing bugs appearing when copying BitLocker encrypted partitions.

Pro Platinum Added

To meet the diverse needs of users, MiniTool made a little adjustment on Partition Wizard edition distribution. The new Pro Platinum Edition is now available in this update, which brings all functions of Pro Ultimate Edition such as partition and data recovery, OS migration, bootable media, dynamic disk management, system disk and partition clone, etc. A big difference between the two editions is that the Pro Platinum can be used on 3 PCs while the perpetual license of Pro Ultimate Edition can be used on up to 5 PCs now.

FAT32 Partition Data Recovery Enhanced

MiniTool Partition Wizard allows users to recover data from FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS partitions. MiniTool Partition Wizard 12.5 improves the accuracy of FAT32 partition data recovery, helping users recover large files more accurately in FAT32 partition.

FAT32 partitions allow users to store files no larger than 4GB. Before this update, MiniTool Partition Wizard can occasionally fail to locate the cluster where a large file ends up with, resulting in data recovery failure occasionally. In the latest MiniTool Partition Wizard 12.5, the data recovery algorithm has been greatly improved, therefore the data recovery success rate is higher.

BitLocker Encrypted Partition Clone Bug Fix

MiniTool Partition Wizard allows users to clone partitions including BitLocker encrypted partitions. However, before this update, there are some bugs occurring when cloning BitLocker encrypted partitions, for example:

  • BitLocker encrypted partition clone fails without reasonable causes. This seldomly happens but does exist.
  • The new BitLocker encrypted partition size is not applied actually. MiniTool Partition Wizard allows users to copy and extend BitLocker encrypted partitions. But some users reported that after copying and extending a BitLocker encrypted partition, the Windows File Explorer shows that the new BitLocker encrypted partition has the same size as the original BitLocker partition.

MiniTool has always been committed to bringing users a better user experience. According to MiniTool, the newly released Partition Wizard 12.5 fixed the above issues, now BitLocker encrypted volumes including the encrypted system C drive can be successfully copied without hassle.

The People’s Aspiration for a Better Life is the CPC’s Goal

BEIJING, July 1, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on CPC centenary:

Why The Red Star Shines Over China? In September 2015, President Xi visited the United States and delivered a speech in Seattle, Washington State. He said that one thing he wished most over 40 years ago was to make it possible for the villagers to have meat and have it often. He has always been committed to making tens of millions of rural residents living in poverty earn a better life. Now, his wish decades ago has come true.

"The people’s aspiration for a better life is our goal."

On Nov. 15, 2012, Xi Jinping, the newly elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made such a commitment to the Chinese people at a press conference.

General Secretary Xi was once an educated youth in Liangjiahe village in Yan’an of Shaanxi Province. During those years, he witnessed and experienced the hard life there, which made him understand people’s needs.

The poverty in China’s rural areas at that time has left a deep impression on Xi.

In September 2015, President Xi visited the United States and delivered a speech in Seattle, Washington State. He said that one thing he wished most over 40 years ago was to make it possible for the villagers to have meat and have it often.

Over the past 40-plus years, he has worked in the government at all levels, and has always put poverty alleviation at the top of his work agenda and devoted much of his energy to it.

He has always been committed to making tens of millions of rural residents living in poverty earn a better life.

Now, his wish decades ago has come true.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, China has made a historic achievement in poverty alleviation. The 98.99 million rural people living below the current poverty threshold have shaken off poverty; all the 832 poor counties and 128,000 impoverished villages have been lifted out of poverty. China has eliminated poverty over entire regions and eradicated extreme poverty.

With the continuous efforts of the CPC and the Chinese people, China has realized the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

It is an important milestone of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Besides, the CPC also set a centenary goal of developing China into a modern socialist country.

Mao Zedong was the first person to set the centenary vision since the founding of the new China.

Deng Xiaoping put forward the strategic plan of developing China into a prosperous, strong, democratic, and culturally advanced modern socialist country by the middle of the 21st century.

In his report to the 19th National Congress of the CPC, Xi Jinping proposed that from 2035 to the middle of the 21st century, we will, building on having basically achieved modernization, work hard for a further 15 years and develop China into a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and beautiful.

By then, the following goals will have been met: new heights are reached in every dimension of material, political, cultural and ethical, social, and ecological advancement; modernization of China’s system and capacity for governance is achieved; China has become a global leader in terms of composite national strength and international influence; common prosperity for everyone is basically achieved; the Chinese people enjoy happier, safer, and healthier lives.

For the CPC, achieving national rejuvenation is like a relay race, in which the baton is passed on from generation to generation.

Xi once said that the baton is right in our hands, and we need to shoulder our responsibilities and be loyal to the Party, the country and the people. We should contribute our wisdom and strength and be committed to making new achievements worthy of the times, history and the people with our best efforts.

The year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC and also the starting year of the "14th five-year plan." The CPC will lead the people to embark on a new journey of building a modern socialist country in an all-round way and strive for achieving the second centenary goal.

The Chinese people are highly determined to carry forward this undertaking with confidence, diligence and perseverance.

More than telecoms: Innovation in the ICT industry is becoming a key economic driver

The pandemic, Ding said, has created a new normal in which the digital economy is the driving force for the global economy. ICT infrastructure, as the cornerstone of the digital economy, is playing an increasingly important role. Ding mentioned that the value of ICT now transcends the telecoms industry and has transformative implications for the global economy as a whole.

In countries where 5G is developing faster, operators have seen faster revenue growth, and these countries also tend to have better digital infrastructure overall. Taking China as an example, in less than 18 months, more than 820,000 5G base stations have been deployed, and Chinese operators achieved a 6.5% increase in revenue and a 5.6% increase in net profits in the first quarter this year. The rapid development of digital infrastructure driven by 5G will add EUR1.9 trillion to the Chinese economy in the next five years. The same stories are also unfolding in South Korea and Europe.

More than connectivity: 5G innovation is enabling operators’ business success

As ICT infrastructure is the cornerstone of the digital economy in the 5G era, operators are playing a more important role than they used to.

Ding said, "Currently, the major goal of operators in 5G is to achieve business success in three key markets – consumers, homes, and industries – through innovation in network deployment, market development, and operation optimization."

"In the consumer market, 5G means not just faster speeds; it also brings new experiences and new value. Some operators have already achieved initial business success."

According to Ding, there are three steps an operator can take to succeed in the 5GtoC market. The first is to speed up 5G deployment, with targeted network planning and investment based on precise insights into high-value areas, key scenarios, and potential users. The second is to accelerate 5G user migration, and the third step is to create value-driven, flexible pricing models.

Today, 5G has been applied in over 1,000 projects in more than 20 industries including steel and mining, enabling safer and more efficient production. Chinese operators have made great progress and are entering the phase of taking early successes and replicating them at scale.

"We’ve learned from Chinese operators’ experience that the success of 5GtoB depends on three factors," said Ding. "First, selecting the right industries. Operators should choose target industries by looking at four factors: demand, affordability, replicability, and technical feasibility. Second, defining the scope of your offerings. Operators can serve as network providers that offer connectivity services. They can also serve as cloud service providers, or even system integrators that provide end-to-end integration services. Different roles require different skillsets and yield different business value. Third, designing innovative business models. This is key to replicating 5GtoB success at scale."

During the pandemic, there is a growing demand for home broadband, and this has highlighted the advantages of 5G FWA that enables rapid deployment and contactless O&M. Middle East operators have achieved remarkable commercial success by taking FWA as a key use case of 5G.

More than business: Huawei keeps innovating to drive industry-wide sustainability

"5G success first requires a 5G network that provides the best user experience, and this guides how we innovate at Huawei," said Ding. Huawei has launched the industry’s lightest and most powerful Massive MIMO that consumes less energy. It can be carried and installed by just one person, which speeds up network deployment. With Huawei’s Optical Cross-Connect (OXC), one sub-rack can replace nine cabinets normally needed. It has four times larger capacity, but uses 95% less power. Huawei’s 5G Super Uplink solution combines the advantages of 2.1 GHz and 3.5 GHz to enhance uplink capacity and indoor coverage. This solution provides a peak uplink rate of over 450 Mbit/s, enabling hundreds of users to live stream the Xiamen Marathon in 4K in April using their 5G smartphones.

To support green development models and carbon neutrality, according to Ding, Huawei keeps innovating at three levels: equipment, sites, and networks. At the equipment level, Huawei uses components with higher power efficiency to make hardware platforms more energy efficient. At the site level, Huawei’s simplified site solutions help operators lower energy consumption, as well as save on electricity and rent. At the network level, Huawei has launched a multi-band and multi-RAT power saving solution. This solution can cut energy consumption in wireless networks without compromising network performance. With Huawei’s innovative solution, 5G equipment working in low and high bands can share a cabinet, and as a result, less energy is used. When it comes to multi-band equipment power saving, Huawei’s goal is to make one plus one less than one.

Collaborating to create an ecosystem and evolving 5G for a better future

Concluding his keynote, Ding emphasized that 5G development requires ongoing innovation. In 5GtoB, for example, 5G standards need to be coordinated with industry standards at a faster rate, and 5G should be integrated into enterprises’ core production processes to help them go digital and intelligent. At the same time, the synergy between 5G, cloud, and computing will further expand the boundaries of operators’ business, creating space for new growth. 5G innovation is an ongoing process. Huawei believes that innovation will light up the future.
