Lenovo Releases the Latest Yoga 9i in Malaysia at MYR 7,299

We have just reviewed Lenovo’s creator powerhouse Yoga last week. The Yoga series is all about flexibility and portability. They are also usually about looks, which is not entirely what the Yoga we reviewed was all about. In that case, if unique looks is what you look for in a laptop, you might want to take a look at Lenovo’s latest addition to their line-up in the Yoga series for Malaysia, the Lenovo Yoga 9i.

You get a 14-inch OLED display that you can swivel around to turn it into a tablet. You can stand it like a tent too, and use it with a stylus. Below the IPS display is a Bowers & Wilkins soundbar that is built into the hinge mechanism, which also means it rotates with you to give you the best aural experience wherever the display faces.

The OLED panel boasts 2.8K in resolution with slim bezels. That also means you get very deep blacks with VESA DisplayHDR 5000 True Black. You also get highly accurate and vivid colours with 100% of DCI-P3 colour gamut. While not 120Hz, the 90Hz display is still plenty fast for everyday use cases or even movies.

The 90Hz display is plenty enough for the Yoga 9i though, since it is not made with gaming in mind. The Lenovo Yoga 9i packs Intel’s latest 13th generation Core i7-1360P processor. There is no discrete GPU here though, just a simple integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, hence you do not need 120Hz in the first place. Alongside the powerful CPU with integrated GPU is up to 16GB in DDR5 memory for seamless productivity with the machine. You also get up to 1TB of SSD storage for all your working needs.

Of course, the Lenovo Yoga 9i runs on Windows 11. It supports Windows Hello facial recognition too with a Full HD webcam paired with an IR blaster and ToF sensor. When you do not want to use your webcam, there is a physical privacy shutter too. Alternatively, you can use the fingerprint sensor for Windows Hello.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i will start at MYR 7,299 and is now available in Malaysia. You can head over to any of their exclusive stores to get your hands on one. If you do get one between 11th to 26th of February 2023, you are entitled to free gifts that are worth up to 3,315 including a 27-inch gaming monitor, a Yoga wireless mouse with laser pointer, and more. More on the Lenovo Yoga 9i can be found on their website.

Samsung Unpacks the New Galaxy Book Series

Samsung unpacked a brand new series of laptops that make up the new Galaxy Book Series. The new series brings a renewed focus on productivity and also inter-device connectivity with Samsung focusing on features like Multi-control and Second Screen.

The Galaxy Book Series comprises of three entries: The Galaxy Book Pro, Galaxy Book Pro 360 and the Galaxy Book Ultra. Each brings Samsung’s flavours to a different class of laptops. However, they focus on bringing a revolutionary user experience to the thin and light category of laptops.

The Galaxy Book Pro brings either a 14-inch or 16-inch display to the traditional clamshell laptop form factor. The Galaxy Book Pro 360 brings a larger 16-inch display complete with S Pen functionality. Finally, the Galaxy Book Ultra is a 16-inch beast looking to find its home with creators. The three laptops have a simplistic design that emphasises minimalism and functionality. This design approach allows Samsung to have a series of laptops that are incredibly thin and light with the largest – the Ultra – coming in at only 16.5mm thick and weighing 1.79kgs.

The Galaxy Books will be coming with the latest 13th Generation Intel Core processors. Samsung has supercharged their Galaxy Book Ultra with configurations supporting the Core i7 and Core i9 with up to 32GB of RAM. Together with these, the Ultra will also feature configurations with either the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX4050 Laptop GPU. The Pro and Pro 360, on the other hand, will take advantage of the integrated Intel Xe Graphics.

All the laptops come equipped with a 16:10 Dynamic AMOLED Display with support for up to a 3K display with a resolution of 2880×1800. The display also sports a 120Hz refresh rate with a 500nit peak brightness. It’s also VESA ClearMotion Ratio and VESA Display HDR TrueBlack 500 certified. In addition, the Galaxy Book Series will also come with studio-quality dual mics with ambient noise cancellation. They also come with a quad-speaker setup with two 5W woofers and two 2W tweeters for a more immersive audio experience.

When it comes to ports, the laptops come with a universal USB-C charger, microSD card slot, USB Type-A (v3.2), headphone and mic combo input, Thunderbolt 4 enabled USB-C ports and an HDMI port. They also ship with an integrated FHD webcam.

Software to Complement the Power

In addition to the hardware, Samsung has its eyes focused on providing a uniquely Samsung experience when it comes to their laptop lineup. The laptops will be able to take advantage of Galaxy Book Smart Switch which allows you to copy all your data from your old PC over to your Galaxy Book. You’ll also be able to leverage your Samsung account to sign in with Single Sign On (SSO). Your passwords are also securely stored in Samsung Pass.

If you’re working on the go, you’ll probably be utilising Link to Windows to connect and control your smartphone from your laptop. In addition, with the latest updates to the app, you’ll be able to automatically turn on your phone’s Hotspot feature with Auto Hotspot. Samsung is also bringing the ability to synchronise your recent websites with your laptop. The most useful feature will, of course, be Multi Control which allows you to seamlessly transition between your phone, tablet or laptop. In addition, you can even use your Galaxy Tab as a second screen.

Pricing & Availability

The Galaxy Book laptops will not be available in Malaysia. However, they will be available in global markets starting in Q2 2023.

The Acer Swift 3 OLED In-Depth Review – Brilliant Display Update

We have reviewed Acer’s Swift 3 before. It is, in many ways quite a regular recipe for a budget thin-and-light laptop. It is really everything you can ask for in a very regular laptop you want to bring around for productivity.

To begin with, it is not that thin in the first place. Still, it is well built. It is also not the most powerful thing you can find in the market since there is no discrete GPU.

Now, the Acer Swift 3 OLED then. It is a slightly outdated product. Yet, it is still relevant since it is technically an updated version of the Acer Swift 3. It was released a few months ago, technically a 2023 product. While Acer released a few products in CES 2023, the Acer Swift 3 OLED will still be the latest Acer Swift laptop available at the time of writing.

It shares the same chassis with the 2022 Swift 3 and Swift 3X. You get mostly the same materials, which is not a bad thing. There is very little in terms of exposed plastic, save for the keyboard and the display’s bezel.

In this case, is the Acer Swift 3 OLED worth looking at? Is it for you? Is it worth its asking price? Should you wait for Acer’s latest laptops released in CES 2023?

If you have come across our Acer Swift 3X and read through our Acer Swift 3 reviews before, they pretty much look the same. There are a few key differences though. Instead of 13-inch on your display, you have 14-inch on the display this time. With that, you get a larger 16:10 aspect ratio display with smaller bezels at the top, the sides, and the bottom. Thanks to that, the Acer logo now sits just above the keyboard, in-line with the DTS etching you see above the power button.

No, it is not a facial recognition capable webcam, but it is a Full HD webcam this time. Somehow, the punch hole for the camera looks smaller than before.

Everything else remains the same. The keyboard layout is familiar. The trackpad is the same exact size and build. Even the thermal vents are placed at the same top right corner of the bottom chassis. The only noticeable difference is the shell design. The Acer logo is smaller now and sits at the top of the shell. It is now a very plain grey, which we find rather boring.

Hardware

Acer Swift 3 OLED 20

Within the familiar all-metal chassis is a very familiar 12th generation Intel Core processor as well. 13th Generation Intel processors are reserved for the next generation Swift laptops. Still, the Swift 3 OLED is an Intel EVO platform laptop.

Features

The Acer Swift 3 OLED starts at MYR 400 premium (MYR 4,399 as tested) over the regular outgoing Acer Swift 3. Most of that extra money goes to the brilliant OLED display you get on the OLED variant of the laptop. You are also not really losing out in terms of features over the regular ol’ Swift 3.

Full HD Webcam

Acer Swift 3 OLED 05

On top of the OLED display is a better webcam than before. Instead of the standard 720p webcam, it is a Full HD 1080p one. In theory, this should be an improvement.

The image you get from it is not the best. The edges are quite soft and dynamic range still. Colours look fine in favourable lighting conditions.

For most cases, in video calls specifically, it works. There is not much to complain about if you are just looking for a simple workaround in your remote working situation. If you want something better, or to use your webcam for streaming purposes, you are better off getting a separate webcam.

Fingerprint Sensor with Windows Hello

Acer Swift 3 OLED 08

Like the older Swift 3, the fingerprint sensor is built into the power button. We think that the fingerprint sensor placement is the most sensible in this configuration. The distinct tactility on the power button is highly appreciated though. It at least prevents us from accidentally turning off our laptop.

USB type-C Charging, Thunderbolt 4, and HDMI 2.1

Acer Swift 3 OLED 18

Thunderbolt 4 should not come as a surprise. It is technically an existing feature of the Acer Swift 3 and any modern laptop that comes with Intel’s latest CPUs. The capabilities of Thunderbolt 4 should also be known by now. You can strap a 4K monitor alongside any USB hubs with Thunderbolt 4.

The HDMI 2.1 port is also found on the 2022 variant of the regular Swift 3. It allows your Swift 4 to get up to 8K resolution of output. You might want to tamper your expectations in terms of performance though since there is no dedicated GPU on the Swift 3 OLED. Still, with HDMI 2.1 you can get your laptop to take advantage of 4K 120hz displays, which should be in the Swift 3 OLED’s range of capabilities even in gaming; just not AAA titles.

The Acer Swift 3 OLED now exclusively charges via USB Type-C. There is no proprietary charging port on the hardware. That also means you have an extra USB Type-C port to work with especially when the other is used as a charging port.

Both USB Type-C ports are Thunderbolt 4 capable ports, allowing you to strap up to two 4K monitors to the Acer Swift 3. You might want to make sure that the monitor can at least charge the Acer Swift 3 at 65W at least.

Same Keys as Before

Acer Swift 3 OLED 11

It is not a perfect keyboard. We think that it could use a little more travel. The bottom out feels a little cushioned. We think that the keyboard feels a little mushy. While it is not hugely uncomfortable to type with the keyboard for long periods, we do think that a little more tactility would make it better.

Performance – The Power of Intel’s 12th Generation Core

The Acer Swift 3 OLED is technically a minor update of a 2022 product. You will not find Intel’s latest 13th generation Core processor lodged in the laptop. Instead, you get a 12th generation Core processor. Specifically, in our test unit, you get the Intel Core i7-12700H processor.

Multitasking & Productivity

Acer Swift 3 OLED 14

The Intel Core i7-12700H is a proven processor in its own rights. While it is not the most powerful mobile processor you can find currently, it is powerful enough for the Swift 3 OLED. The laptop does not come packing a discrete GPU though.

It comes with Intel’s Iris Xe, which should be enough for 4K video editing purposes even. It should make short work of Photoshop and Lightroom. As of writing though, we could not get Adobe’s Lightroom to work on the laptop, which is a shame. That also means we could not fully take advantage of the brilliant OLED display with 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut. They also claim DisplayHDR 500 certification with up to 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which should really reward content creators. At 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800 pixels) as well, it is not what you call an average display.

Still, if your aim is to get other things like emails and word processing done on the laptop, it will do the job just as well. The 16GB of RAM should be plenty enough for a ridiculous amount of open tab on your Google Chrome and to game with.

Entertainment & Gaming

  • Acer Swift 3 OLED 26
  • Acer Swift 3 OLED 28
  • Acer Swift 3 OLED 25
  • Acer Swift 3 OLED 24
  • Acer Swift 3 OLED 22

This is where the OLED display also comes into a class of its own. The Swift 3 OLED, in terms of internal hardware, should allow for very smooth and painless streaming experience on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Via the app, Netflix can technically scale up to 4K in streams, but it will remain at 1080p Full HD in this case. Amazon Prime only does Full HD on any PC hardware.

From time to time, you might want to play some games. This is no gaming laptop, so you do want to adjust your expectations a little in terms of gaming performance. Keep in mind also that there will be a lot of heat when you play games, on top of plenty of noise. We tried playing games like Two Point Campus, CS:GO, and Undertale on the laptop.

With Two Point Campus, you want to keep your graphics settings at the lowest (very low) for a smooth experience. On very high settings you barely get 20fps out of the game, but everything looks just that much better.

Undertale is that game that you can play on any PC, no matter the performance. You get 30fps, which is sort of the maximum the game goes to anyway. The OLED display does make the graphics pop a little more and makes the game just a little more enjoyable though, which is nice.

CS:GO on the other hand can hit up to 40fps at times. Most of the time, you are only getting up to 30fps though. It is playable, but you will not be competitive without a GPU. You want to expect some input delays on the Swift 3 OLED too. To get more performance, you can just push the resolution down a little.

Battery Life

Acer Swift 3 OLED 16

Acer quotes about 8 hours of battery life on the Acer Swift 3 OLED on their website. Inside, you can find a 57Wh Lithium-Ion battery. The charging adapter it comes with is rated at 100W, which is more than sufficient to charge the laptop. It is possible to use a 65W GaN charger with the Acer Swift 3 OLED.

In our use case, we have several Firefox and Microsoft Edge windows open with not more than 20 tabs open at the same time. At least two Microsoft Word windows are open most of the time. Screen brightness is usually at about 50% most of the time or less, it can get overly bright at 100%.

In our typical use case, we get nearly eight hours of battery life out of the Acer Swift 3 OLED. We are impressed enough with the battery life, though we think that it could use a slightly bigger battery to accommodate a full workday and a little more just in case you have extra work at the office and you forgot your charger at home.

Display & Audio

  • Acer Swift 3 OLED 23
  • Acer Swift 3 OLED 07

This is really the part where the Swift 3 OLED shines. When you put the Swift 3 beside any other laptop in its class without OLED displays, you can immediately tell that this laptop is special.

Acer quotes 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio with DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification. It refreshes at 90hz and it supposed to respond at 0.2ms, which is really near instant. You get 2.8K resolution on the 14-inch OLED panel, which is a lot of pixel for a laptop this size. It is even enough pixel for content creators to work with, especially if they specialize in working with photos.

Colours really pop on the Acer Swift 3 OLED, thanks to the capabilities of OLED displays. Any images you can put on the display are super vivid and lifelike thanks to the highly accurate colour reproduction. Watching shows on Netflix, Prime Video, and even Disney+ is a joy on the Acer Swift 3 OLED. You hardly get colour fringing or ghosting on the OLED display. Thanks to the HDR capabilities, darker scenes on shows like ‘The Witcher’ still packs plenty of detail. ‘Our Universe’ looks immersive and impressive at the same time with superbly rich colours. In that sense, you can also enjoy YouTube videos with no issues.

The DTS certified speakers are a little on the less powerful end of the spectrum. You do not get a lot of low-end frequencies, which is quite expected since there is no proper subwoofer installed here. On the mid and high frequencies, there is some clarity but not a lot of details. It is not the most powerful nor detailed set of speakers in the world, but it works. It is good enough if you are just looking to watch movies or listen to music while you browse the internet or work. For production purposes, you are better off with a decent pair of earphones.

The Acer Swift 3 OLED – That OLED Though

Acer Swift 3 OLED 19

The Acer Swift 3 OLED starts at MYR 3,999. The one we have here will set you back MYR 1,000 more at retail (MYR 5,399 retail). You can get it at a massive discount via their online stores, but it is still a lot of money for a thin-and-light laptop without discrete GPU. The original Acer Swift 3 starts at MYR 3,599, which means you are paying the MYR 400 premium for a much better display.

The original Acer Swift 3 is not a bad laptop to begin with. There is no discrete GPU, but for a laptop that is supposed to do everything, everywhere, it is decent. The OLED upgrade highlights the high-resolution display aspect even more and made the laptop that much better to work with.

The OLED display with 16:10 aspect ratio helps with productivity. It is not a gamer product, but if you have enough for an eGPU, it might work. If not, watching movies on the OLED display is rather enjoyable. Provided, the speakers are not the best; it is and easy fix with a decent pair of headphones or Bluetooth enabled speakers. Even webpages with any form of designed visuals look really sharp on the display. The experience on the Swift 3 OLED might spoil you and your experience with other laptop displays in the future.

Is it worth the MYR 400 extra over the original Swift 3? We can safely say that the display experience is worth a little more than that. At MYR 3,999 though, we cannot call it budget friendly. If you go for the top-of-the-line option with a more capable Core i7 and 16GB of RAM, you are paying a premium of MYR 1,300 (MYR 5,399) over the Core i5 variant.

In that sense, we think you might be better off waiting for Acer’s latest Swift laptops that were launched during their CES 2023 keynote. At the same time, if you cannot wait for a few more months, we think that the Core i5 with 8GB RAM variant should be the better buy. You still get the gorgeous high-resolution OLED display, but with slightly less power. It is still enough power for you to get your photos edited, browse the internet, and watch movies comfortably.

[CES 2023] New Alienware Hardware & Dell Gaming Laptops Break Covers

Dell has been pushing the bar recently with its gaming offerings and concepts. Together with the new update to Concept Nyx, the company also announced new additions to its gaming offerings in its Alienware and Dell G portfolio. While some of them come with design updates, the laptops come with the latest 13th generation Intel or AMD Ryzen Zen 4 processor and also the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX40 series Laptop GPUs or AMD’s Radeon 7000M GPUs.

Alienware m18 & m16 Supped Up and Ready To Go!

The new Alienware line up is spearheaded by a refreshed M series which comes with two new additions: the m18 and m16. Both laptops continue to stay focused on delivering the best gaming performance possible. They also come with the Legend 3.0 design language – a refinement on Legend Design which was announced a few years ago.

Alienware M series CES 2023

The biggest difference between this generation and the last generation M-series is the displays. This generation ditches the 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch displays for slightly larger 16- and 18-inch displays. These displays come with a 16:10 aspect ratio and support resolutions of up to 2560×1600 pixels (QHD+) with 240Hz refresh. If you are looking for higher refresh rates, there is an option for an FHD+ panel with a 480Hz refresh rate.

Of course, Alienware’s M-series continues to support customisation via their website and supports a myriad of options when it comes to internals with up to 64GB of dual channel DDR5 4800 MHz RAM and up to 9TB of internal storage with its Quad Storage configurations. Connectivity-wise they support Killer WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. There is even an option for Cherry MX mechanical keys for the laptops as well. AlienFX also makes a comeback with multiple zones customizable from the updated Alienware Command Center.

When it comes to processors, the M-series maxes out with a 24-core Intel Core i9-13900HX. On the graphics end of things, the NVIDIA RTX 4090 Laptop GPU with 150W TGP is top of the line offering. To support the performance that the internals bring, Dell has equipped the Alienware M series with am updated cooling system. The vapour chamber now covers the CPU and GPU increasing the thermal capacity by 35% and there are now seven heat pipes that help with heat disipation. It comes without saying that they’ve also increased the airflow with quad fans with ultrathin fan blades.

The AMD equipped Alienware M-series will make its debut later in the year.

Alienware x16 & x14 Forge the Way for Portability

The Alienware X-series is also getting a bump when it comes to performance. The X16 and X14 succeed the previous models. However, they continue to inherit the sleek aluminium build that was introduced with the X series. Similar to the M series, the X series is replacing its larger x15 and x17 with the x16 while the x14 retains its compact size.

Alienware X series CES 2023

The new Alienware x16 and x14 come with an updated 16:10 aspect ratio and sport displays with up to 2560×1600 pixel (QHD+) with 165Hz refresh rate on the x14 and 240Hz on the x15. Both boast a 3ms response time. The displays also support 100% of the DCI-P3 gamut and NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus technology.

When it comes to storage, the X series with up to 4TB of internal storage with up to 32GB of RAM. To keep things slim and portable the internal memory modules of the X series as solderd on to the motherboard. So, you won’t be able to add more later on. That said, it also provides a boost in performance. AlienFX is also avaiable and customisable on the Alienware x14 and x16.

On the graphics end of things, the x16 maxes out with the NVIDIA RTX 4090 laptop GPU with a max TGP of 175W. The x14, on the other hand, caps out with the RTX 4060 with 85W TGP. Both support charging via USB-C.

Similar to the M series, AMD versions will be announced later in the year.

Revamped Dell G15 & G16 Bring Self Expression Front and Center

The Dell gaming laptop line up is getting a major update with the new G15 & G16. Both will sport the updated design which incorporates a more industrial feel, larger air vents and customizable colourways. The latter is more prominently spotlighted in the G15 models which sport retro ’80s pop aesthetics including a funky purple and blue colourway. The Dell G15 and G16 continue to inherit most of the design queues from last years model including the placement of ports and the signature Dell Gaming hinge.

Dell G Series Gaming CES 2023

The Dell G15 and G16 will be comeing with a new cooling system. Both will sport a vapour cooling system inspired by the system we’ve seen in Alienware laptops for better cooling. The system now sports four heat pipers with improved fans with ultrathin blades and an improved heat exchange area. Some of the configurations will come with Element 31 thermal interface and vapour cooling as well. These thermal updates will support the cutting-edge performance of the processors. Both models have configurations capping out with the Intel Core i9-13900HX and support up to the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU.

[CES 2023] ASUS ROG Brings Even More Power to its Desktop Lineup

ASUS has made a name for itself when it comes to desktop components. It should come as no surprise that the company also has a lineup of pre-built desktops. This year, the desktop lineup is more focused and streamlined. There are three new entries into their offerings this year with each one taking laser focus on a feature to champion.

ROG G22CH – Redefining “Small but Mighty”

When it comes to desktops, it’s generally been a battle between space and performance. However, with the ROG G22CH, ASUS is proving that both aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. The small 10L chassis small form factor PC packs a punch with the latest generation 13th Generation Intel Core processors with configuration supporting the Core i9-13900K. Together with this, the G22CH comes with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUS with up to 32GB of DDR5 4800MHz RAM and up to 2TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD storage.

Together with the power-packed internals, the G22CH is designed with a focus on airflow. The new pre-built desktop system supports both AIO liquid coolers and traditional air cooling for the CPU. The Next Thunderbolt is Here Supporting DisplayPort 2.1 Specifications, but it is Confusing

The invention of USB Type-C is a significant one. It brought the USB invention to the modern world. It ushered in a new era of standard connectivity. It is also a rather important aspect in the world of high wattage fast charging devices. It also allowed a single USB port to turn into so much more than just one port. It is a charging port, data port, DisplayPort, and even an HDMI port. Intel calls their own proprietary technology for a multipurpose USB Type-C the Thunderbolt technology.

Thunderbolt technically did not start out as a USB technology though. Thunderbolt needed its own proprietary port to work on its own. That never really caught on. The USB Type-C 3.1 standards brought in an entirely new possibility with Thunderbolt. In its current standard, with the latest available Intel processor, Thunderbolt is in its fourth generation; hence, Thunderbolt 4.

Thunderbolt 4 brings about DisplayPort 1.4 capabilities alongside HDMI 2.0, up to 40Gbps data transfer speeds, and even 10 Gigabit networking. You can even charge laptops that require less than 100W charge speeds. All that, and you still have USB 3.0 capabilities with a USB dongle.

Thunderbolt 4 is impressive, but to keep up with the times, it needs an update. It needs to keep up with HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.0 standards. Intel does one better with USB4 v2. We are guessing that the next generation Thunderbolt would be named Thunderbolt 5 and still go along with USB Type-C port, but Intel might have a different idea when the first laptops arrive with USB4 v2 standards.

Instead of keeping up to DisplayPort 2.0, the new USB4 v2 standard is capable of DisplayPort 2.1 port standards. That also means that it can transfer up to 80 Gigabits every second in either direction. One way, up to 120 Gigabits of data can be transferred every second for the best type of display experience you can find on any device.

Like Thunderbolt 4, the new Thunderbolt standard can also support PCIe data throughput. That means you can plug in your GPU externally and make use of more powerful GPUs to run with your thin-and-light laptop. In this case, USB4 v2 is now capable of the lates PCIe 5.0 standards for twice the throughput from the previous Thunderbolt 4.

Intel says that the USB4 v2 standards will also be compatible with previous versions of Thunderbolt, USB, and DisplayPort. While it might simply mean that it will still be able to work with devices in the previous generation, it could also mean that Intel is sticking with USB Type-C as its main connection method. Even if they decided not to stick with USB Type-C, they might be able to get manufacturers and accessory makers play ball with their new designs.
