IQM announces KQCircuits – An open-source software to design superconducting quantum processors

ESPOO, Finland, June 17, 2021 IQM Quantum Computers (IQM) announced today its open-source software tool KQCircuits to automate the design of superconducting quantum processors. KQCircuits Is a Python library jointly developed by Aalto University and IQM using the KLayout design program.

Designing quantum processors is fundamental to build quantum computers. But it is a difficult, multi-step process that takes significant time and effort. With this initiative, IQM supports the broader quantum community by open-sourcing its state-of-the-art quantum processor design platform.

KQCircuits creates a community-driven universal platform that enables quantum chip development through a simple and open framework, from chip design and simulation to fabrication. With KQCircuits, quantum engineers and physicists can conveniently generate chip designs with a simple click. They can also check the signal routing before the device fabrication process to avoid making costly errors.

"At IQM, we’ve been using KQCircuits to design and develop our state-of-the-art quantum processors. By making it available as an open-source platform, we want to make our tools available for the entire quantum community. Using KQCircuits, researchers and companies worldwide can now focus on R&D and continue to innovate faster," said Dr. Johannes Heinsoo, Team Leader at IQM.

KQCircuits generates multi-layer two-dimensional-geometries representing common structures in quantum processing units (QPUs). It includes:

  • A framework and definitions of parametrized geometrical circuit elements
  • Templates for manually drawn or code-defined circuit elements
  • A method for assembling a QPU design from elements.

Also, to reduce the design turnaround time and to reduce manual errors, KQC includes helpers to export:

  • Optical mask layouts and lithography patterns
  • Project files for easy simulations with popular FEM software such as Ansyss HFSS, Ansyss Q3D, and Sonnet
  • Netlist for SPICE simulations.

"KQCircuits leverages the work at KLayout design program, which has a history of over a decade of continuous development. We’d also like to acknowledge and thank the team at the QCD Labs of Aalto University and Mr. Matthias Koefferlein, Open-Source Developer of KLayout," added Dr. Heinsoo.

" In research, we are always looking for collaboration opportunities and ways to design quantum processors that are of high quality and reproducible. We are extremely happy that our work at the QCD Labs of Aalto University is now continued by IQM. We hope to see other quantum companies and researchers utilize this tool and contribute by further developing KQCircuits," said Prof. Mikko Möttönen, Aalto University

World’s First! The Downsized Desktop SBC with Auto Heat-Up against Extreme Weathers

TAIPEI, May 5, 2021 — As AI technology becomes ubiquitous, the impact of unusual weather also gains more attention. The most impressive case was the sudden weather change in Denver, the US, last September that the temperature dropped from 37°C to minus overnight. Faced with such fluctuation, the devices which maintained the daily life of the city in order, like the facilities for traffic flow analysis, surveillance, and AI visual analytics, could no longer operate normally, or even damaged, due to the lack of endurance to the extreme weathers.

Inspired by the situation, DFI brought an innovative design into the newly-released CS551, the "World’s First 3.5" desktop SBC with auto heat-up". This breakthrough gives devices high performance with smaller footprint for image analysis or heavy workloads, no matter at subzero temperatures or under heat waves.

The CS551 is DFI’s first SBC downsized from Mini-ITX form factor (195mm x 170mm) to 3.5" (146mm x 102mm). Powered by Intel Core™ 8/9 Gen processors with the Intel Xeon server-grade ECC support for memory protection offered by the Intel C246 chipset, this small board enjoys desktop computing performance and deployment flexibility at the same time.

In terms of fighting against extreme weather, the operating temperature of the CS551 SBC can go down to -30°C, which is not commonly supported by the motherboards with desktop performance. The endurance to subzero temperatures leverages the auto-on heater attached to the board to warm up or cold boot the processor for operation. Equipment can thus operate normally without being shut down in snow.

Apart from low temperatures, the endurance under 80°C heat waves with the fanless design is also noteworthy, since efficient heat dissipation at high temperatures normally requires a fan. Here the smart adjustment of computing resources between CPU and GPU is adapted to avoid throttling under heavy workload at up to 80°C. This prevents computers from crash down as well as greatly improves the application stability throughout a year.

For the devices that are deployed outdoor or may exposed to extreme temperatures, like unmanned transportation vehicles, robotic arms in cold warehouses, or cold-chain related applications, the coming out of CS551 is expected to offer a more reliable performance and extended longevity.

More information can be found at DFI CS551 product page.

From now on, Huntkey will do every step of the standard formulation to lay a solid foundation for the in-depth application of photocatalyst air purifiers in China’s manned aerospace science and technology projects.

This achievement exhibition is the first aerospace science and technology achievement exhibition with the theme of manned spaceflight. The entire exhibition area covers an area of more than 1,800 square meters. There are multiple zones such as the Mars base camp, space training camp, and Mars base exploration. It is worth mentioning that for the first time, it has assembled many authentic products of Chinese spacecraft, as well as spacecraft and lunar exploration vehicles. Space Station, Long March series rocket family and many other models are displayed. The 2021 China Manned Space Science and Technology Achievement Exhibition will last from April 30 to July 24 and will be held at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning.

The audience has chance to try the novel experience of starting from the earth and entering the "Mars Base Camp" wearing a space suit and sitting on the Mars base to experience the Martian storm and the tense Martian life at the center of the Mars energy crisis! They can also join the "Tiangong Special Training Department" basic theory, physical fitness, space environment adaptability training and other eight astronaut training programs, experience the astronaut scientific research training scene. Audience has chance to feel the secret and greatness of Chinese astronauts and visit the "Aerospace Museum" to see valuable space suits and giant return capsule parachute.

The Oucica KJ380 photocatalyst air purifier is one of the exhibits. It has the functions of anti-virus, sterilization, odor removal and aldehyde removal. The product adopts photocatalyst UVA decomposition technology and high-efficiency composite filter, which can play a role in disinfection and purification. At the same time, Oucica’s photocatalyst air purifier products have obtained the "Sanitation License for Disinfection Product Manufacturers" issued by the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission. The main purpose is to produce medical-grade disinfection equipment "Photocatalyst Air Sterilizers". It means that Huntkey has the qualification to independently research and develop, produce and sell disinfection equipment products, and can bring reliable air purifier products to all users.

US Companies Invest in Switched Ethernet Services to Connect to Cloud-based Applications, Says Frost & Sullivan

Enterprises are evaluating the benefits of fixed versus usage-based network services to align with pay-as-you-go cloud-based services

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 22, 2021 — Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis finds that continued demand for bandwidth and cloud connectivity needs are sustaining Ethernet demand in the United States business markets. Market maturity, downward pricing pressure, and lack of sustained demand for point-to-point Ethernet services with SD-WAN (software-defined wide area network) will result in the market dropping from $6.35 billion in 2021 to $5.94 billion by 2024. COVID-19 has forced many enterprises to alter their strategies, while some have decided to hold off on making network purchase decisions, others invested in site upgrades because there was a demand for increased bandwidth. This study presents key trends, market revenue and ports forecasts, a market share analysis, and growth opportunities. It is segmented by transport distance (metro versus long haul) and service type (dedicated or port-based services versus switched or VLAN-aware services).

"Although the market is declining, there is still demand from enterprises that consume Ethernet services for their flexibility, scalability, and reliability," said Gina Sanchez, Industry Principal, Frost & Sullivan. "There will be a sustained call for switched services (Ethernet virtual private line (EVPL) services, in particular) since companies benefit from purchasing a single user network interface (UNI) port and creating multiple Ethernet virtual circuit (EVC) to share the bandwidth among different applications."

Sanchez added: "The adoption of Ethernet by enterprises to connect to cloud-based applications is driving the demand for dynamic bandwidth capacity on Ethernet networks. Enterprise users are evaluating the benefits of fixed versus usage-based network services to align with pay-as-you-go cloud-based services. Therefore NSPs are increasingly shifting from selling fixed bandwidth services to dynamic bandwidth options using SDN technologies."

Market participants should closely look at the following growth opportunities:

  • Support for Continued Demand for Bandwidth: As enterprises seek higher-capacity ports to support the growth in bandwidth-hungry applications, network service providers (NSPs) must offer speed configurations, ensuring the service’s reliability through strong service-level agreements (SLAs) and performance management solutions that build customer trust.
  • Cloud Connectivity and Cloud Services: As companies focus on network performance and reliability, NSPs must provide flexible and scalable approaches to Ethernet services. Expanding footprint and network is also important.
  • Focus on Customer Experience: Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-defined products are a basic feature, and network service providers should focus on the customer’s digital experience to differentiate their offerings (portals, systems, and processes).
  • Leverage Dynamic Ethernet Services: Service providers should give customers greater control over their network and bandwidth efficiency. Dynamic Ethernet, or bandwidth on demand, is important.
