HONOR 9X Pro Launched – Little Things Matter

The mid-range smartphone market is a crowded marketplace, for good reason too. Mid-range smartphones these days are what bolsters sales of smartphones around the globe. It is sort of the brands’ revenue maker. The best selling devices today are not flagships anymore, they are the mid-rangers.

There is a reason to why mid-range smartphones sell like hot cakes too. They are not very expensive; that is one. But they are not just inexpensive, they perform well too. In everyday life and use, the mid-rangers are no less powerful than a high-end smartphone like a HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro or such.

Of course, if you are going to spend way less money on a smartphone you are going to have to make some sacrifices. But the trade-offs these days are quite minor compared to the money that you actually save. That is the exact job description for the HONOR 9X Pro.

The name of the game here is value-for-money. There should be as little compromise as possible while keeping the price to as low as possible. The result is a flagship class HiSilicon Kirin 810 System on a Chip (SoC) for starters. According to HONOR, the Kirin 810 is the most powerful single core SoC available in their smartphones. It even has what HUAWEI calls a DaVinci Neural Processing Unit, one of their most advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) programming.

Thanks to a new 7nm construction too, the Kirin 810 comes with a powerful GPU which can be pushed even further with GPU Turbo 3.0. While that increases the heat produced dramatically, you might not feel it all that much in your palm thanks to a highly efficient liquid-cooling copper pipeline embedded in the svelte device.

The SoC is paired to 6GB of RAM for smooth multitasking or even gaming. 6GB is also what most flagships will come with for RAM. Even storage is not being compromised with a super fast 256GB UFS 2.1 storage module. With all that power, you really want a big battery; 4,000mAh big for this one.

Out the back are three cameras you can appreciate. The main shooter is a 48-Megapixel shooter flanked on both sides by a 2-Megapixel depth sensor for that tight Bokeh portraits, and an 8-Megapixel ultra-wide angle shooter. Who needs a telephoto lens when you have 48-Megapixel to work with.

The super high resolution photos is channeled to the large 6.59-inch FullView display with no compromises. That means the 16-Megapixel front-facing camera is hidden away in a motorised pop-up mechanism. Of course, the whole device is wrapped in 3D glass. The front is a Gorilla Glass, quite obviously and the back still features the signature X pattern.

The HONOR 9X Pro is powered by HONOR’s Magic UI 3.0.1 based on Android 10. You get the HUAWEI App Gallery instead of Google’s Play Store though. That also means that this is a HUAWEI Mobile Services device instead of Google’s official Mobile Services device. Still, at least it is a familiar User Interface (UI).

The HONOR 9X Pro will be available in Malaysia and other selected markets from March 2020 onward. The price was announced to be EU€ 249 for the European market. That translates to about MYR 1,143 in Malaysia. There has been no official pricing attached to the device in Malaysia yet. we are looking at somewhere between the MYR 1,099 to MYR 1,199 range. We could be wrong though.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs Getting in on The Fold!

HUAWEI showcased the interestingly complex and advanced HUAWEI Mate X, a foldable smartphone that is unlike anything that we could imagine a foldable smartphone would be. Instead of folding inward, the display of the Mate X folds outward. That also means that when the HUAWEI Mate X is folded, the display wraps around the side to the back.

We did not actually see the HUAWEI Mate X making it into the smartphone market mix in Malaysia. Which also means we did not even get to see it in person. Still, it made the foldable smartphone market a little bit more interesting than what it already is. It gives the foldable smartphone market something to think about, because it was an unconventional solution to a conventional problem.

This year is still about foldable smartphones apparently. Of course, there was the Samsung Galaxy Fold that came in with a large display that folds in. There is an external display of course when the display is folded in. Then there is the Motorola RAZR and most recently the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip that was just announced two weeks ago. Oh yes, the Z Flip is going to make it in Malaysia.

Of course, HUAWEI is not going to be the only one missing out. For this year they are launching their brand-new HUAWEI Mate Xs. Like the Mate X we saw in CES 2019 last year, the HUAWEI Mate Xs features the familiar Falcon Wing Hinge. The one found on the HUAWEI Mate Xs is supposed to be sturdier than the original Mate X though, at least that is what they are claiming.

Like the Mate X of 2020, it also features a display that folds out into a larger display instead of folding in. Which also means that the Mate Xs will have a wrap-around display as well. Folded in, the main display measures in at 6-inch. That extends to 8-inch once popped out. Yes, it is a spring loaded mechanism, only for the first part of the unfold though.

As one of the leaders in 5G infrastructures and technology, the HUAWEI Mate Xs comes with 5G capabilities too. While it does have dual SIM capability, the other SIM tray can only support up to 4G connectivity, understandably as well.

Of course, a new flashy flagship has to come with a flashy processor. For that, the HUAWEI Mate Xs gets a HiSilicon Kirin 990 System on a Chip (SoC). Of course, that also means that the HUAWEI Mate Xs is perfect for multitaskers with multi-window capabilities built-into the User Interface (UI). You can even open two instances of a single app if the app supports App Multiplier feature. Imagine having two instances of WhatsApp running at the same time.

Instead of having two or even three camera arrangements though, HUAWEI has gone quite conventional with a single camera array. The single camera array is still a system of HUAWEI’s proven SuperSensing 40-Megapixel quad camera set-up. Supporting the main camera is a 16-Megapixel ultra-wide shooter, 8-Megapixel telephoto lens, and a 3D depth sensor for better Bokeh photos.

A large screen, as usual, needs a large battery. The HUAWEI Mate Xs packs a 4,500mAh battery. While that may not sound that big compared to equivalent 8-inch tablets, you must remember that HUAWEI smartphones do come with some very impressive battery life, according to user testimonies anyway. If that is not enough for you in a day though it charges at 55w; that is as fast as some notebook PC these days. The notebook that typed out this release, for example, charges at minimum of 40W. With 55w charging, the HUAWEI Mate Xs charges from empty to full within 40 minutes.

teThe HUAWEI Mate Xs is said to be sold globally next month, March 2020. Earlier in the presentation Richard Yu did say that the new smartphone will be expensive. How expensive? EU€ 2,499 expensive. That is about MYR 11,500 and that is for the 8GB RAM and 512GB storage variant. Yes, it does come with 5G connectivity. The HUAWEI Mate Xs comes with their very own EMUI 10.0.1 and HUAWEI Mobile Services based on the Android operating system. It does not support Google’s Play Store though.

OPPO dipping their hands into the bag of microchips

OPPO is reportedly getting into the chip making game. This is not the first time a phone manufacturer creates its own chipsets to be used in their own smartphones. You know these brands too, they are Samsung and Huawei with Exynos and Kirin respectively. They call it the Mariana Plan. Not to be confused with the Mariana Trench, the plan will be led by Qualcomm’s former technical director in collaboration with engineers from Oppo’s sister companies, OnePlus and Realme.

In the past, OPPO mentioned of a big R&D push for an ecosystem of smart devices with an investment of RMB 50 billion which is just slightly over US$ 7 billion. Yes, that is what it takes to get into the game with the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek.

There is no obvious reasons yet on why OPPO would make their own chipset. At the moment as OPPO has been great partners with Qualcomm and Mediatek. There is no indication as well on OPPO dropping the partners anytime soon. Possibly, OPPO sees a market that its missing out on or just a long term cost effective move to install its own chipsets into their phones. The chipsets could also be sold to other phone manufacturers to integrate them into their phones expanding the variety of chipset and value.

With the on going US trade ban, HUAWEI is unable to integrate Qualcomm’s chipset into their phones. Fortunately HUAWEI has their own chipset to lessen the blow of the ban. Based on this logic, OPPO could be developing this new project as their own safety net.

At this point, OPPO has developed one of the best and best known Android iteration in ColorOS. There is no telling yet on what they can do with their chips. If their Android UI development is any indication, they could develop great chips at a fraction of the price of other manufacturers.

HUAWEI Releases the Mate30 Pro 5G in Malaysia

Malaysia has been discussing and researching 5G for a while now. In fact, the initial rollout of 5G commercially will begin in Q3 2020. With that in mind, HUAWEI was also present at the recent 5G Malaysia International Conference in Langkawi. The company was showing off their Mate 30 Pro 5G in Malaysia’s 5G test bed. HUAWEI has announced today, that the smartphone will be available officially in Malaysia starting on 7 February 2020.

The Mate30 Pro 5G initially leaked earlier this year when screen caps of its certification in SIRIM surfaced. Now, it looks like Malaysia will join China for its commercial rollout. The new Mate30 Pro 5G is the first 5G capable smartphone top be made commercially available in Malaysia. The smartphone will be available via HUAWEI stores and telco partners such as Maxis, U mobile and Celcom.

Powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G, the Mate30 Pro is a step above its Mate30 Pro brother. The new 5G capable chipset supports 2G, 3G, and 4G in addition to the upcoming 5G. The new entry supports standalone and non-standalone 5G networks. HUAWEI touts low latency connectivity with the 5G capable smartphone, however, keep in mind that this is only applicable with a 5G network.

Aside from this, the smartphone shares the same design, software and camera setup found on the Mate30 Pro. This means that one of the most praised smartphone cameras is available on the smartphone; DxO mark gave the camera setup a 123. This paired with the 40 SuperCharge feature on the smartphone makes it a compelling offering from HUAWEI.

Pricing and Availability

The HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G will be available starting from February 7, 2020. The smartphone will initially be available from HUAWEI stores and also from Maxis, Celcom and U Mobile. It is also slated to be available through DiGi.

It will be retailing for MYR4,199 off contract. Purchases of the HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G will be entitled to freebies from HUAWEI worth MYR537 including an extended year of warranty and an in-car wireless charger.

HUAWEI’s New nova 7i Lands in Malaysia on 14 February 2020

HUAWEI’s nova series has always been a strong contender in the mid-range space with compelling specifications. The main draw of the series has always been its flagship class camera with a price point that makes it one of the most accessible offerings that’s worth your money on the market.

That said, the company recently announced the availability of their nova 6 series in China. It looks like the 6 isn’t making its way to Malaysia. Instead, HUAWEI is teasing a new entry: the nova 7i which will be available in Malaysia from 14 February 2020!

The new HUAWEI nova 7i looks to be coming with a HiSilicon Kirin 810 which was featured in the HONOR 9X and 9X Pro. That said, the new chipset promises power savings thanks to the 7nm fabrication process which allows the chip to have more performance while keeping the battery life. The processor is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. If 128GB isn’t enough, you’ll be able to add up to 256GB of extra memory with a nano memory card (NM card).

The display on the nova 7i is a 6.4-inch LTPS IPS LCD capable of reproducing 16 million colours. It’s a Full HD+ display with a resolution of 1080×2310 pixels. Unlike its flagship brethren, the new mid-ranger comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. HUAWEI included a large, 4,200mAh battery for all-day battery life. It also supports 40W supercharge charging which can provide 70% of battery with 30 minutes of charging.

More Cameras, More Better Pictures?

The camera setup on the smartphone is a quad camera array with a 48-megapixel main sensor. It is also capable of ultrawide and macro shots. HUAWEI hasn’t clarified if the ultrawide and macro features are due to individual sensors on the camera array. That said, the main sensor is a wide sensor with an f/1.8 aperture for better low light performance.

HUAWEI is touting the front camera’s enhanced selfie features. This is powered by a dual selfie camera setup. HUAWEI hasn’t divulged the exact sensors used in the setup. That said, the company has touted that the new setup will enable users to get “golden selfies”. In addition, it looks like the nova 7i comes with enhanced software that will allow users to get better performance on video calls and even when posting to social media such as TikTok and Instagram.

We don’t have any information on the price. However, given the previous price point of the nova 5T, we expect the nova 7i to be about MYR1,599. It is likely the smartphone may be priced higher due to the HUAWEI Y9s released last year.

HiSilicon No Longer HUAWEI Exclusive

You know that CPU in your HUAWEI smartphones that you are so used to? Yes, the HUAWEI branded processing chip that has been a staple in HUAWEI’s flagships and other smartphones. Yes, HiSilicon, as the title named. No, they are still HUAWEI’s subsidiary.

From 2020 onward though you might not just see HUAWEI devices fitting in chips from their in-house chip maker. They are starting to sell their chip technologies and processing chips to other manufacturers, expanding their business opportunities.

It does make a lot of sense this move of opening themselves up to the bigger market. HiSilicon makes some of the world’s cleverest and powerful processing chips to be put in a smartphone. The HiSilicon Kirin 990 for example, is proven to be one of the most powerful System on a Chip (SoC) to be found on a smartphone. So it is not like they make subpar products, they do make some compelling stuff. It is just that we have never seen anyone other than HUAWEI using the chips due to HUAWEI’s agreement with their subsidiary.

These years where Shanghai HiSilicon operates exclusively for HUAWEI too sees the Chinese telecommunication giant benefit from the clever chip designs of the chip manufacturer. The Kirin SoC series is partly responsible for HUAWEI’s successful P series and Mate series line-ups thanks to the clever dedicated Neural Processing Unit (mostly known as an AI chip) integration, first in the world in the HiSilicon Kirin 970.

The expansion does not just cover smartphone SoC sales though. The expansion also extends to Shenzhen HiSilicon expanding their manufacturing scope to more than just smartphone chips. They will be responsible for making processing chips for things like smart TVs, set-top boxes, and other smart home electronics that needs a processing chip.
