Creating Teams That Keep Tech Companies Ahead of the Curve – A Sit Down with Suthen Thomas Paradatheth, Chief Technology Officer at Grab

Grab’s humble roots as a Malaysian-born start-up are often ignored as the company has moved its headquarters over to Singapore, a country that was, at a time, more receptive to disruptors and unicorns. However, Malaysia’s talent still plays a vital role in the organisation as the company continues to host some of its core talent in Malaysia like its technical team – one which the company is currently expanding.

That said, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, Suthen Thomas Paradatheth, continues to lead the expanding technical and programming teams. Suthen is a Malaysian, born and bred. He hails from Kuala Lumpur – Petaling Jaya more specifically – and has had most of his education locally in institutions like Sekolah Menengah Seaport (now known as Sekolah Menengah Sri Permata). Suthen earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering with First Class Honours from Multimedia University in 2005. Programming seems to be innate with Suthen having worked as a freelancer since his high school days.

After university, a series of fortunate events and good networking found him working on Grab’s codebase. He’s been with the company since its early days in 2011; Back then, it was still MyTeksi. Since then, Suthen has earned his Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and continues to be the man behind (most) of the code and features that make their way into the Grab app.

But – we’re not here to talk just about his achievements, we’re here to talk about the tech he’s worked on and some of the methods of his madness. It’s worth noting though, that even with his impressive resume and experience – particularly with Grab – Suthen remains extremely humble and approachable.

Passion Driven, Curiosity Fuelled

Heading Grab’s Technology and Programming is no small task. From its early days, the task of building the Grab Superapp has been monumental. It involved significant changes to the codebase, deciding which language to use and even creating new approaches. The task – which at one point was outsourced to programmers in India – is now handled by a team of about 2000 employees and headed by Suthen.

“Software engineering is, like, the closest thing to magic in the real world. Like, you put a certain set of words on a screen in a certain way and something happens…it’s the closest thing to a spell in reality.”

Suthen Thomas Paradatheth,
Chief Technology Officer at Grab

Suthen’s take on building a capable team is a rather unique one. In fact, his approach to working as the CTO is unique in itself. His approach is a very altruistic one mired in the belief that Grab as a platform is impacting lives significantly. This belief paired with an insatiable curiosity and passion for coding has led to his growth over the years and his ability to manage a large, growing team. This same passion and drive is what he looks for in his team members.

The ethos even rings true when the team deploys new features and services into the app. Key tenets like “How will users benefit from it?” and “Will it make a significant difference?” are big drivers to why we continue to willingly accept the big changes we see in the Grab app.

Empowering Independence and Diversity at Every Level

The technical team at Grab isn’t a small one and – like the super app – it’s not monolithic either. The 2,000-strong team is siloed into “Tech Families” a concept built on the similar “Tribes” or “Squads” model.  Each of these families is focused on one of the more technical aspects of the app’s many services and functions. But more importantly, the teams are made of diverse talents that complement their functions and reduce dependence on other teams. These teams aren’t just made up of software engineers, they could have people skilled in data and analytics, designers and even communicators if the team’s functions need it. They’re cross-functional and allow teams to work independently and innovate freely.

The biggest component to the success of Grab’s approach isn’t just the diversity of talent and skills in each team – it’s trust. Suthen has an approach where he trusts the teams and their team leads. He communicates with the leads and trusts them to solve and address the concerns of their own team members. In his own words, “…my job is actually to create coherence, connectivity between the layers.”

Using the Right Technology to Go Places

The same approach to creating coherence also trickles down to tech adoption as well. Grab isn’t behind the curve when it comes to new technologies. In fact, they’ve recently announced a partnership with Open AI to adopt some of the many Generative AI technologies that come with Open AI’s ChatGPT. However, Grab isn’t just about adopting the newest, hottest thing on the market. The decision to adopt new technologies is driven by how the new technology addresses the needs of the organization. In fact, if there isn’t a solution on the market, the teams at Grab will create their own.

Not many people know this, but Grab has actually developed its own mapping system and doesn’t use third-party map providers like Google Maps. This change was driven by the fact that a lot of third-party mapping, didn’t serve the needs of Grab’s ride partners and users. This was particularly true in markets where GrabBike is more prevalent. To address the needs of ride partners and users, Grab actually looked to their ride partners to map lesser-known roads and pathways. Using AI and a simple action camera, Grab has created its own mapping platform that allows it to be more accurate and serve ride partners better.

However, being a technology company, the teams at Grab are continually innovating. In fact, the teams are continually trying to stay ahead of the curve by identifying and addressing new needs or existing ones that new technologies can address. Leadership, like Suthen, continually push for this innovation and also hire for it. More importantly, leadership should invest in its own people to drive innovation.

Creating Efficiency & Reliability from the Ground Up

Innovation isn’t about throwing something to the wall and seeing what sticks. It’s about creating answers to problems that arise or creating better ones to existing problems. Similarly, at Grab, the approach that Suthen and the tech teams adopt is one that creates efficiency. This efficiency doesn’t just mean it’s efficient in code – whatever they do has to create efficiency when it comes to the day-to-day of Grab’s operations and this includes the efficiency of ride partners.

“Running a good marketplace is also running an environmentally friendly sustainable marketplace.”

Suthen Thomas Paradatheth,
Chief Technology Officer at Grab

We’ve seen GrabShare come and go and return to the platform. This is due to Grab testing out more efficient and functional ways to implement it. Let’s be honest, having a single passenger in the ride can be a tad wasteful when it comes to resources, so with GrabShare, where available, the driver earns more while being more efficient with the petrol the cars utilise. With ESG goals playing an increasingly important role in companies, this approach literally builds these goals into the code.

Even when it comes to the adoption of AI and new technologies, Suthen and his team are looking at how it impacts day-to-day functions. One of the pain points they hope to resolve is the waiting time for riders when it comes to food deliveries. Minimising this would not only mean that delivery partners are more efficient with their time, it would also mean that they are able to earn more. This would also help drive more efficiency with the fuel that is being used.

Of course, when it comes to ride-hailing, Grab is looking into EVs and hybrids that allow them to be more environmentally friendly. In fact, they’ve already started offering GrabGreen in other markets.

Creating a Sustainable, Passionate Team Starts with the Top

The one thing that rang true in our sit down with Suthen is this: the culture and workspace environment start very much with the top. The right approach, empowering your teams, creating independence, and prioritising your innovations will drive your teams to increase productivity and even retain your customers.

Overall, key takeaways for disruptors and even CTOs looking to create a team that is innovation-driven is this:

  1. Trust is key when you build your team.
  2. Create teams that are self-sufficient and reduce dependencies to keep them agile.
  3. Innovate efficiently and keep your company’s values as a driving force.

Grab & OpenAI Join Forces to Supercharge the Superapp Experience in Southeast Asia with AI

AI is in vogue right now. The latest company to jump on the AI bandwagon? Grab. Yep, that’s right. The same Grab that you use on a daily basis to order food, call a ride and more. Southeast Asia’s leading superapp has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. This partnership – a first-of-its-kind for OpenAI in Asia – will see Grab leverage generative AI to enhance the superapp experience across multiple facets from user experience to employee productivity.

The collaboration will focus on two key areas: developing AI-powered solutions for Grab’s user base and partners, and piloting the use of AI within Grab’s workforce.

grab x openai

Building a More Inclusive Experience

One of the most exciting aspects of the partnership is the potential to make Grab’s services more accessible. Grab will utilize OpenAI’s expertise in text and voice technologies to create features that cater to users with visual impairments or elderly individuals who might find navigating the app interface challenging. This could involve implementing voice commands or text-to-speech functionalities, making it easier for everyone to interact with the Grab platform.

Enhanced Customer Support and Faster Mapping Updates

The partnership extends to improving customer support. Grab will explore building AI-powered chatbots capable of better understanding user inquiries and resolving issues more efficiently. This would streamline the customer support process, leading to faster resolution times and a more satisfying user experience.

OpenAI’s vision capabilities will also play a role in enhancing GrabMaps. By leveraging AI to automate tasks and extract data more effectively from visual imagery, Grab can potentially update maps at a faster pace. This ensures users and driver-partners have access to the most up-to-date information, improving navigation and overall efficiency within the Grab ecosystem.

AI Pilot Program for Employees

Beyond user-facing solutions, Grab also plans to pilot the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise among select employees. This initiative complements Grab’s existing efforts to integrate AI tools across its workforce, aiming to boost productivity and explore new ways to utilize this technology for internal processes.

This collaboration between Grab and OpenAI has the potential to significantly transform the way users, partners, and employees interact with the Grab platform. By harnessing the power of AI, Grab can create a more inclusive and user-friendly experience, optimize internal operations, and ultimately solidify its position as a leader in Southeast Asia’s digital landscape.

GXBank is Now Open to All Malaysians

After a beta test spanning a few months, GXBank Berhad (GXBank), Malaysia’s first digital bank, has officially launched its app. The app will be the main touchpoint for users. It aims to provide a user-friendly and accessible banking experience to millions of Malaysians. GXBank is an officially licensed bank under Bank Negara Malaysia. Being the first digital bank approved and launched, GXBank aims to revolutionize the financial landscape with its innovative approach to banking.

GXBank faces an uphill climb to convince Malaysians to come on board as the first and only digital bank at the moment. However, the bank is committed to promoting financial inclusion and empowering Malaysians to take control of their finances. That said, the bank’s intuitive app, designed with simplicity and accessibility in mind, caters to individuals from all walks of life. It can also be the tipping point for a lot of digital natives as conventional banks continue to struggle to digitize their services to serve digital natives intuitively.

GXBank Launch

GXBank shares that data gathered during the beta testing phase revealed that Malaysians are actively looking to replenish their savings which might have been affected by the recent pandemic, and they are actively utilizing GXBank’s features to manage their finances responsibly.

The GXBank app actively enables this with their key feature – ‘Pockets’, a digital savings tool designed to encourage and support saving goals. Nearly 50% of beta testers have embraced Pockets, demonstrating the strong appetite among Malaysians to save for emergencies, holidays, and investments.

In addition, GXBank’s debit card, the GX Card, seamlessly integrates with the digital banking experience. The card offers a range of attractive benefits, including unlimited 1% cashback on every transaction, zero markups on foreign transactions, and 1.5x GrabRewards points when used at Jaya Grocer.

GXBank first foray into the digital banking space marks a significant step forward in Malaysia’s digital economy. It now remains for the bank to show that Malaysians are ready for the change that this will mark in their banking habits. The beta test which involved more than 20,000 is a good indication of the Malaysian public’s appetite for alternative banking solutions after dealing with brick-and-mortar banks. It will also mark a significant shift in the banking landscape as conventional banks will now need to compete with new contenders that can have a leg up when it comes to digitization.

GXBank Quietly Unveils GX Debit Card with Unlimited 1% Cashback

GXBank, the Grab-led digital bank, has quietly introduced its GX Debit Card. This announcement comes on the heels of the announcement of its banking app earlier this month. While the current app focuses on basic savings, the anticipation surrounding the debit card launch is generating considerable interest.

According to the GXBank website, the GX Debit Card will be launched soon. The card features a sleek, minimalistic, modern design in renders. It is also being touted to provide users with unlimited 1% cashback on everyday transactions. That is on top of GXBank’s pledge to not markup on exchange rates and have transparent overseas transaction fees for the time being.

The GX Debit Card claims to be “the only cashback card with no limits,” offering 1% cashback across various spending categories. The promotion of an RM1 fee waiver at 10,000 MEPS ATMs nationwide adds to the card’s appeal. However, accessing the card presents a challenge as GXBank’s public beta is limited to 20,000 Malaysians.

Being a digital bank, GX Debit Card users can expect convenient card management through the app – which is not in beta. The app will allow users to self-serve features like freezing the card and customizing transaction preferences. That said, there doesn’t seem to be anything indicating support for popular digital wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay.

While the GX Debit Card offers enticing cashback benefits, it’s worth noting that there are fees which are currently being waived. According to the documentation available, this includes an RM12 card issuance fee and an RM1 transaction fee for MEPS ATM withdrawals. Additionally, there is a 1.2% administration fee for foreign currency transactions or overseas card use. There isn’t any word on when the fees will be enforced. However, the product information sheet points to the waivers only being until 31 December 2024.

Users interested in trying out the offering from GX Bank will need to register on the waitlist for the app and request the debit card from there. However, there is no word on how long this will take or if GXBank will be expanding the public beta currently underway with 20,000 participants.

GX Bank Beta App Now Available to Select Malaysians

GX Bank Berhad (GX Bank) is pushing boundaries as Malaysia’s first digital bank to go to market. The digital bank received approval to operate from Bank Negara Malaysia ahead of the April 2024 deadline. The bank focuses on serving the underserved through innovative channels, including a dedicated app and 24/7 customer support.

GXBank App key visual

After its initial announcement back in September, GX Bank is already rolling out its official app in beta. The beta app is set to roll out to 20,000 Malaysians on November 14, 2023, following successful internal testing. GX Bank’s app is developed to be user-centric. The app comes with a user-friendly interface prioritizing trust and security. Chief Technology Officer Fadrizul Hasani emphasizes compliance with regulatory norms, ensuring user data and funds’ safety.

During beta-testing, users can create a GX Bank Savings Account and set up to 10 “Pockets” for specific savings goals. Money placed in these pockets will earn daily interest of up to 3%. Being the first digital bank to go to market, it may be daunting to be an early adopter. That said, deposits of up to RM250,000 in GX Bank are protected by Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PDIM). In addition, users are able to lock their accounts in case of fraud and limit daily spending. GX Bank is also offering exciting benefits including RM20 cashback with a minimum of RM100 deposit, withdrawal fee waivers, and unlimited cashback with the upcoming debit card feature.

Simple Onboarding Process

GX Bank promises a seamless onboarding experience. With a few taps, users can download the app, complete the eKYC process, upload their MyKad, and deposit a minimum of RM10 to start saving.

To set up your account, all you need to do is:

  1. Download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store
  2. Upload a digital copy of the national identity card (MyKad)
  3. Complete the eKYC process as stated in the app
  4. Add a minimum of RM10  into the savings account and set up Pockets (if you want to)

Existing Grab users can access the GX Bank app through the Grab App.

Grab Brings Even More Ways to Save & Spend Responsibly

Grab isn’t the first name you would think of when it comes to spending responsibly and saving money. In fact, if you were to speak to most people, they would say that everything from Grab is pricey and expensive. Further, with economic uncertainty and a looming recession hanging over consumer’s heads, many are looking to tighten their belts. Grab wants to be part of the solution and help consumers save more while spending more responsibly with a bevvy of new features that allow you to be more mindful when you use the Grab super app.

Cheaper Delivery with Saver & Group Orders

One of the main pain points for users is the delivery fees which can sometimes be a little steep. Grab is remedying this with two new features that should be rolled out by the time you read this article.

The first is the option to save on your delivery charges by selecting the “Saver” option. This option will give you a lower fare depending on the time it can be between MYR1-2 cheaper than the usual “Standard” option. It will be available 24/7 from all merchants moving forward. The prices under the “saver” option will be the lowest delivery fee on the platform. In fact, Grab boasts that this feature alone has helped its users save over MYR27 million between January and August 2023.

If you want to save even more, you can even plan ahead with “Order later” which will allow you to plan to get your meals delivered when the delivery charges are lowest. This will also help you be more mindful of your meal times and eat a little healthier as you plan ahead for your meals instead of ordering on a whim.

Delivery costs will also be minimised with new improvements coming to the Group order function in the Grab super app. You may have noticed the enhancements coming in one by one over the past few months. Grab is revamping the Group Order function to make it simpler and easier to manage. Joining group orders will not only be available through shared links but will also be available through QR codes. This will simplify joining. You will also be able to set deadlines and not have to wait or call to make sure everyone has placed their orders.

Group Order GrabFood

However, if, like me, your family uses GrabFood on the regular, you won’t need to bug the poor person who initiated the group order for updates anymore. Instead, you will be able to track the order together. This includes the new tracking notification that you get on regular orders from GrabFood. In the near future, you will be able to use “Smart Bill Calculation” to go Dutch on GrabFood. The feature will calculate each participant’s orders and divide the total bill accordingly. So, if you’re ordering with your friends or – just maybe – your neighbour, you’ll be able to share the cost of delivery too.

Dine-In to Save

GrabFood Dine in Dine in Voucher

GrabFood is also being expanded to include dine-in orders. The new Dine-In feature on the Grab super app will allow you to easily discover nearby deals, read restaurant reviews and even get dine-in vouchers with a few simple taps. Don’t feel like driving? Well, you can get a ride too. This feature will allow you to get discounts by ordering at partner restaurants with the Grab app. When you do this, you’ll be able to use vouchers from your GrabUnlimited subscription or even purchase cash vouchers at a discounted price from the app. Of course, it goes without saying that you’ll need to use GrabPay to complete the transaction.

GrabUnlimited Subscription Plans
Source: Grab Malaysia

Speaking of GrabUnimited, Grab will be rolling out bulk subscription options in December 2023. You will be able to unlock more savings by subscribing for a longer period of time. Currently, users who subscribe to GrabUnlimited pay MYR4.90 a month for the subscription. However, with the new long-term subscriptions, users will be paying MYR4.50 a month for a 6-month subscription or MYR3.99 for a 12-month subscription.

Stamp cards Grab App

In addition to the cheaper options for GrabUnlimited, Grab is also piloting Stamp cards starting in November 2023 at select retailers in Klang Valley. This pilot will allow merchants to foster brand loyalty by offering digital stamps for every visit/purchase. Once your card is completed, you will get some perks depending on the restaurant and outlet. This could be as simple as a free drink or as complex as a steep discount on things. This feature should be making its way to you through an update sometime in November 2023.

SavewithGrab a commitment towards affordability

These features will make their debut soon as part of Grab’s #SaveWithGrab campaign. During this campaign, Grab wants to reiterate the brand’s commitment to remain affordable and alleviate concerns about the rising cost of living in Malaysia. Hassan Alsagoff, Head of Marketing at Grab Malaysia, emphasizes that these features not only help consumers spend more wisely while saving but also help them create more job opportunities for their merchant- and delivery partners.

GrabPay Gets More Secure

GrabPay is arguably one of the largest eWallets in Malaysia. Now a crucial component of Grab’s “SuperApp”, it’s the primary means of racking up GrabRewards points and paying for services. That said, it’s also one of the features that requires the most user information. As such, it comes as a welcomed update that GrabPay is getting more features to ensure data safety. The announcement is a timely given the rise of the number of cyber security incidents in the past week.

The GrabPay eWallet has been enhanced with multi-layer security features. These features are touted to enhance the security of real-time transactions that are done on the platform. As a first layer of defence, GrabPay has been fortified with two factor authentication (2FA). This measure will ensure that logging in is more secured. All users will need to setup their 2FA with a GrabPay PIN. In addition to the PIN, users will also be able to use biometric authentication as well. This means you can use facial recognition and fingerprint authentication on supported devices.

GrabPay Security
Source: Grab Malaysia

In addition to 2FA, Grab has adopted AI technologies to help with fraud protection. They have implemented machine learning and AI that monitors user account activity. These algorithms will detect any anomalous activity and flag it as potential fraud. Once flagged, it will lockdown the account for further action. Grab is also working with internationally recognised security systems that will also assist and verify detection to ensure that transactions are genuine.

This AI integration is complemented by privacy and security policies. Grab states that any information pertaining to GrabPay transactions is secured. Payment, transaction, credit card and account information are all kept under lock and key. These policies are compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). GrabPay as a platform is also regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

The last component of their security, according to Grab, is a strong customer service arm. Grab has made information readily available on their Help Center. Grab is touting its Help Center as a key educational tool for users to learn about GrabPay and also self serve solutions for common issues. If the help center isn’t sufficient, users are able to access live customer support through the Grab application.

With these steps and mechanisms in place, Grab is ensuring users that their data and transactions will be private and secure. So, you can use GrabPay with peace of mind.
