SK Telecom Showcases Green ICT at CES 2022

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 2, 2022 — SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM, hereinafter referred to as "SKT") today announced that it will participate in CES 2022, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 5 to 8, 2022, to showcase green ICT in the era of Net Zero.

SKT will operate a joint exhibition booth with SK Inc., SK Innovation, SK hynix, SK E&S and SK Ecoplant under the theme of ‘SK’s 2030 Net Zero Pledge’ and offer a chance for visitors to experience its innovative green technologies.

  • Environmentally friendly AI and telecommunications network technologies

AI and telecommunications networks stand at the core of ICT innovation. However, they are also pointed out as a cause of environmental pollution due to the large amount of power they consume. Against this backdrop, SKT is accelerating an ICT revolution through the development and application of low-power high-efficiency semiconductors and energy-saving telecommunications network technologies.

At CES 2022, SKT will be showcasing its self-developed AI chip named SAPEON. SAPEON is optimally designed to process artificial intelligence tasks faster, using less power by efficiently processing large amounts of data in parallel.

With the rapid spread of AI services in people’s daily lives and industries, the amount of data that needs to be processed is growing exponentially. However, the existing AI data centers that use Graphics Processing Units (GPU) for inference are receiving criticism for consuming a great amount of energy. SAPEON is an environmentally-friendly solution as it uses 20% less power than GPU, while supporting 1.5 times faster deep learning computation.

SKT will also introduce Single RAN, a technology that reduces the amount of power usage by approximately 53% through integrated operation of 3G and LTE network equipment. The company either replaced the outdated 3G and LTE equipment with new equipment applied with Single RAN or upgraded the software of its existing LTE equipment with Single RAN to operate as both 3G and LTE equipment.

By successfully applying Single RAN to all applicable base stations and repeaters installed in 78 cities in Korea including Seoul in 2020, SKT earned around 10,000 tons of carbon credits.

  • ICT solutions for reducing carbon generation in daily lives

At CES 2022, SKT will invite visitors to experience its metaverse service, multi-use cup project and other ICT services that can help reduce CO2 emissions such as optimal route navigation service.

The company will introduce its metaverse platform Ifland as a new promising path towards a low carbon society. Ifland allows users to take carbon generating activities such as conferences, presentations and business trips to the virtual world.

It provides a wide variety of virtual spaces including conference halls, outdoor stages and rooftops, and enables users to enjoy rich communication by sharing documents (PDF) and video files (MP4). It can accommodate up to 130 users simultaneously, which makes it an ideal place for large-scale events.

Ifland has been providing users with a new and environmentally friendly experience by migrating diverse offline events to the virtual world ranging from the D-100 event for 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial and K-pop concerts.

SKT will also present the Habit Cup Project that promotes the use of multi-use cups to reduce plastic waste. Coffee shops participating in the project are serving beverages in multi-use cups named ‘Habit Cups’ that can be later returned via smart kiosks capable of identifying and accepting only Habit Cups through the use of SKT’s vision AI technology. Returned cups are collected everyday to be cleaned and sanitized, and then delivered back to cafes.

At present, SKT is carrying out a trial project joined by around 20 cafes located in central areas of Seoul, where there is a large floating population. The company expects to eliminate the use of 1.2 million disposable cups during the three-month project period. It is also implementing a trial project in Jeju Island, and expects to reduce the use of 630,000 disposable cups per year.

Korea’s No.1 mobility platform T Map will also be on display. By providing an optimal route, T Map contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving fuel. The service also helps save social costs by decreasing the risk of traffic accidents through enhanced safety features like sudden brake alert.

"At CES 2022, we will be showcasing cutting-edge technologies that can drive the green ICT revolution, along with innovative services that hold the power to reduce carbon generation in our daily lives," said SKT. "Through multifaceted efforts, SKT will become a solid leader in the era of Net Zero."

SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 27, 2021 — LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it will introduce its new Transparent OLED solutions at CES 2022.

LG Display’s Shopping Managing Showcase at CES 2022
LG Display’s Shopping Managing Showcase at CES 2022

The company aims to demonstrate the new and innovative consumer experiences and values its Transparent OLED solutions will bring to normal everyday spaces like commercial facilities, offices, homes, and transportation.

To modernize home life, LG Display is preparing to take the wraps off its latest concept, ‘OLED Shelf,’ which combines two Transparent OLED displays, one above the other, and seamlessly blends into any living room decoration while adding a touch of elegance as it is hanging off from the shelf on the wall. The innovative OLED Shelf is perfect for displaying TV shows or gallery paintings while running in its Always on Display Mode, further demonstrating Transparent OLED displays’ ability to transform any home interior into a living space that exudes modernity.

LG Display is also set to unveil its ‘Shopping Managing Showcase,’ a Transparent OLED display fitted inside a wooden display stand, which will reinvent the offline shopping experience. Ideal for luxurious department stores, the Shopping Managing Showcase can display eye-catching visual content on the screen that harmonizes with the products on display behind to better grab the attention of shoppers and elevate the ambience of the place.

Another example of how LG Display is redefining the shopping experience is its ‘Show Window,’ which consists of four 55-inch Transparent OLED displays. The distinctive Show Window maximizes the advertising potential of window displays by delivering a more unique and informative shopping experience.

When it comes to the office, LG Display will be showcasing its ‘Smart Window‘ which is specially designed for the office of the future. By applying this Transparent OLED technology to conference room windows, the advanced Smart Window can help professional teams maximize their productivity by transforming into an expansive screen for video conferencing, presentations, and entertainment without compromising the open view of a normal glass window. And since it saves up space by eliminating the need for large TVs or monitors, it adds a sense of openness to the workplace.

LG Display is the only company boasting proprietary technology of large Transparent OLED displays in the world. The company commercialized 55-inch Transparent OLED displays with 40 percent transparency in 2019, and since then the company’s expansive and versatile Transparent OLED displays have been applied in various spaces outside the home such as shopping malls, museums, and subways.

Transparent OLED technology leverages the advantages of OLED’s completely unique self-emitting nature in several ways. Considering that Transparent OLED displays flaunt a slim design, high transparency and light weight, they can be widely utilized for various industries.

According to a recent study by leading global consulting firm the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the global transparent OLED display market is predicted to expand continuously at a compound annual growth rate of 116 percent over this decade, reaching a total value of around USD 2.7 billion by 2025 and USD 10 billion by 2030.

"With our industry-leading Transparent OLED technology, we will continue to introduce innovative high-end solutions that allow our customers to enjoy unprecedented experiences," said Lee Hyeon-woo, Senior Vice President and Head of Life Display Business Group at LG Display.

CES Innovation Award Honoree total pet healthcare app ‘TTcare’ to be introduced in Las Vegas

SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 9, 2021 — AI FOR PET will participate in ‘CES(Consumer Electronics Show)’, the world’s largest technology exhibition held in Las Vegas from Jan. 5 (THU) to Jan. 8 (SAT) 2022.

AI FOR PET has developed an AI technology-based total pet healthcare app service, TTcare. Users only need their mobile phone and the TTcare app to take care of their pets’ health. When a user takes a picture of their pet’s eyes or any part of their body with a smartphone, the artificial intelligence will inform them whether or not there are any potential eye or skin disease-related symptoms. In addition to diagnostic features, there is weight management, behavior analysis, and other features.  These features allow users to manage their pet based on breed, age and disease history.

TTcare will be introduced at CES

AI FOR PET began developing TTcare based on a research study "CNN-based diagnosis models for canine ulcerative keratitis" published in the 2019 Scientific Report journal. By learning major body parts such as the eyes, ears, feet and other parts of pets, the algorithm automatically detects and optimizes the areas to analyze. It crops them and determines whether they may have a potential disease using various neural network algorithm-based ensemble models.

TTcare is the first smartphone application in the world to determine whether a disease exists by using pictures of pets’ eyes or skin. TTcare is also the first product to be officially approved by the Korean government for "Artificial Intelligence-based medical device software for animals" rather than a general pet service. By being selected as a CES 2022 Innovation Award Honoree, TTcare’s technology and innovation has received validation.

TTcare was selected as a CES 2022 Innovation Award Honoree

TTcare prevents disease deterioration and health complications in pets, thus reducing medical expenses due to unnecessary hospital visits. It will also recognize and manage neglected diseases in advance as most pet owners do not have an expertise in pet diseases.

The CES Euna Huh said, "Our app supports the identification of diseases and periodic health care from the comfort of the user’s home, so that pets and pet owners can live a healthy life together for a long time."

AI FOR PET launched TTcare in late 2020 in Korea and plans to launch an English service in the first half of 2022 to service pet parents around the world.

53 million additional cases of depression raises concern about gaps in healthcare delivery

According to a study on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental disorders by Dr. Damian F. Santomauro and his colleagues at the University of Queensland, Australia, (published in online Lancet journal), the number of patients with major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders increased by more than 53 million and 76 million, respectively, with higher rates among women and young people. According to the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) MAP published by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), the availability of mental health services across the U.S. varies from region to region, with most regions meeting less than 50% of the demand for mental health services, which is inadequate.

Addressing regional disparities by enhancing treatment effectiveness with VR-facilitated treatment

Using VR technology in the treatment of depression can be a significant adjunct to enhance treatment effectiveness by allowing the patient to have a more realistic experience. Patients are able to immerse themselves almost "in vivo" in a VR environment and experience "first- hand" typical situations that are relevant to depressed patients. They identify with the characters in the scenes being able to take multiple subjective positions in the situations that are displayed. Watching the characters in the scenes express their thoughts and perspectives from a distanced position, can help patients reflect on their own thoughts and perspectives in similar situations in their lives. Enhancing the effectiveness of available treatments for depression can help alleviate the burden associated with the increasing demand for adequate mental health services worldwide.

<Comments from the professional consultants>

Dr. Kim Larsson and Dr. Amaro Laria joined the Jolly Good VRDTx project as professional consultants in 2021. They are the co-founders and co-directors of Boston Behavioral Medicine, LLC in Boston, MA, USA. Dr. Larsson is a graduate of Boston College School of Nursing, and a former supervisor at Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Laria is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston and a current Clinical Instructor in the Psychiatry Department of Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School. "VRDTx can help improve quality and effectiveness in treating depression, which in turn can alleviate some of the burden associated with regional disparities in the US."
Katharine "Kim" Larsson, PhD, RN, CS
Co-founder & Clinical Director
Boston Behavioral Medicine, LLC

"The COVID-19 pandemic has limited social interactions causing many to become isolated, which has significantly fueled levels of depression and anxiety. In turn, being depressed and anxious causes people to become more isolated, which impacts negatively on their functioning. VR technology can be an important adjunct for psychotherapists in the treatment of depression. "

"I foresee that VR technology will become more routine in the treatment of mental health conditions, and will represent an important clinical tool for psychotherapists to enhance the effectiveness of their treatments. Given the increasing demand for services and serious shortage of mental health clinicians, enhancing the effectiveness of our current treatments for depression will be essential in addressing this global mental health crisis."

<Dr. Larsson’s Biography>

Dr. Katherine "Kim" Larsson is a doctoral level licensed clinical specialist, who has practiced as a psychotherapist and psycho-pharmacologist for over 20 years. Dr. Larsson underwent clinical training at McLean Hospital and The Cambridge Hospital, both teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. She is former Assistant Director of the Behavioral Medicine Program at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston, and a former supervisor in the Behavioral Medicine Program at Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School. She has carried out international work in Japan as a lecturer and consultant, helping to promote the development of behavioral medicine approaches among nurses and mental health clinicians.

"VRDTx can allow depressed patients to immerse themselves in real life situations, which can significantly enhance the effectiveness of their treatments"
Amaro J. Laria, PhD
Co-founder & Training Director, Boston Behavioral Medicine, LLC
Faculty / Clinical Supervisor, Psychiatry Department, Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School

"VR technology brings an experiential and interactive element into the therapy room. It’s an important complement to the ‘talking’ element in psychotherapy, and it results in a more balanced and comprehensive treatment. For example, if a patient is talking about their lack of motivation, the therapist can invite them to reflect on a scene they watched in a VR session, which provides a more vivid and concrete illustration of what the lack of motivation may look like in real life.

Moreover, watching a realistic scene in a VR environment may trigger a particular memory of a similar situation in their own lives, which will allow them to process this material in their talking therapy. VRDTx can also facilitate the process of learning strategies like self-monitoring and cognitive restructuring, which are core to cognitive-behavioral therapy, by providing a role play opportunity through a realistic illustration in VR. It can also be a good replacement for in-vivo exposure, especially in situations in which it’s difficult to recreate real life exposure situations.

<Dr. Laria’s Biography>

Dr. Amaro Laria is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience as a psychotherapist. He uses a patient-centered integrative approach that highlights the centrality of the therapeutic relationship and the role of emotions in treatment. Dr. Laria is director of the Boston Behavioral Medicine Training Program, and holds a faculty appointment as Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School through his affiliation with the Department of Psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance. He obtained his PhD in clinical psychology at University of Massachusetts Boston in 1997, and was a NIMH post-doctoral research fellow in the Social Medicine Department at Harvard Medical School. He served as advisor on cultural issues to the DSM-5 workgroup on anxiety disorders.

VRDTx was developed by Jolly Good and is based on basic principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy ("CBT"), adapting CBT strategies to a VR environment. This treatment strategy allows patients to experience "realistic role play" situations that are typical of many individuals suffering from depression. The experiential quality of this treatment tool can make treatment more relevant to patients, which in turn can significantly enhance treatment effectiveness.
