Thailand 2020 Investment Applications at Over 480 Billion Baht, Led by E&E and Food, BOI Says

BANGKOK, Feb. 10, 2021 — The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) said today that local and foreign investors had in 2020 filed a total of 1,717 applications for investment promotion, representing a combined investment value of 481.1 billion baht (USD16 billion), led by projects in the electric and electronics and the agriculture and food processing sectors, and a surge in the medical sector.

Ms Duangjai Asawachintachit, Secretary General of the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) spoke to reporters in Bangkok on 10 February 2021 after a board meeting which approved incentives for the public listing of BOI-promoted companies and acknowledged the 2020 investment applications report.

"The coronavirus outbreak represented both a challenge and an opportunity, and while the overall economy registered a slowdown in 2020, businesses that can continue to expand during the crisis, such as the medical sector, witnessed an increased number of investment applications," Ms Duangjai Asawach, Secretary General of the BOI, told reporters. "The number of projects and the investment value reflect the success of the investment promotion measures we took in the past year to answer the needs of the market, especially in the medical masks, hygiene products, and medical rubber gloves segments."

Applications for projects in the target industries, sectors of strategic importance for the country’s economic development, amounted to 230.7 billion baht, or 48% of the total value of applications. The top five sectors by value were: 1) electrical appliances and electronics with 50.3 billion baht worth of applications; 2) Agriculture and food processing with 41.1 billion baht; 3) automotive and parts with 37.8 billion baht; 4) Petrochemicals and Chemicals with 36 billion baht; and 5) Biotechnology with 30 billion baht.

The medical sector saw a noticeable increase of the value of applications which grew 165% from 2019 to 22.3 billion baht as a result of specials incentives offered by the BOI to this industry in support of Thailand’s efforts to manage the Covid-19 crisis. Investments in this sector came from both large companies and SMEs.

In regard to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), some 907 project applications were filed in 2020 worth a total investment value of 213.2 billion baht. The FDI were led by Japanese companies, which topped the ranking both in terms of the number of applications, 211 projects, and in terms of combined investment value, 75.9 billion baht. Investments from China came in second with 31.5 billion baht investment value, followed by US with 24.6 billion baht investment value.

The Eastern Economic Corridor, or EEC area, which comprises the provinces of Chonburi, Rayong and Chachoengsao, attracted 453 projects applications filed by both local and foreign investors, worth a combined investment value of 208.7 billion baht.

Renewal of the measures to encourage the public listing of BOI-promoted companies

At a board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha today, the BOI approved to renew the incentives offered to BOI-promoted companies to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) or the Market for Alternative Investment (MAI) in order to get access to new funding sources, while participating to strengthen Thailand’s capital market and economy.

The scheme grants companies going public an additional 100% corporate income tax (CIT) exemption on the value of their investment (excluding cost of land and working capital). Projects which have already been granted BOI promotion and have started to generate income can still apply for these additional privileges and benefits on the condition they still have valid CIT exemption rights.

To be granted these additional privileges and benefits, companies must submit their applications by the end of December 2022. The companies must get listed on the SET or MAI before applying for promotion, but companies listed prior to the announcement of the measure are not eligible to this scheme.

Sodexo Reinvents Catering with Atlas AI Platform

PARIS, Jan. 8, 2021 — When it comes to food choices, what is on the top of consumers’ mind? Taste, look, or service experience? Maybe for today’s consumers, the answer is "All of them".

Sodexo, one of the world's largest catering service providers, works with Huawei to launch the Seefood intelligent settlement solution. The solution builds on the Huawei Atlas AI software and hardware platform, and combines AI image recognition into the settlement phase to automatically recognize dishes, calculate prices, and complete settlement via cards and mobile terminals.
Sodexo, one of the world’s largest catering service providers, works with Huawei to launch the Seefood intelligent settlement solution. The solution builds on the Huawei Atlas AI software and hardware platform, and combines AI image recognition into the settlement phase to automatically recognize dishes, calculate prices, and complete settlement via cards and mobile terminals.

People are increasingly health-conscious, and choices of food are many out there. However, traditional catering services are not personalized enough, let alone providing health tips for each customer. Cafeterias for enterprises, schools, and other large facilities face multiple challenges, such as slow settlement and long queues. These problems also affect customer experience. It has now become an industry trend to introduce intelligent methods to improve dining experience and efficiency.

To address these challenges, Sodexo, one of the world’s largest catering service providers, works with Huawei France to launch the Seefood intelligent settlement solution. The solution builds on the Huawei Atlas AI software and hardware platform, and combines AI image recognition into the settlement phase to automatically recognize dishes, calculate prices, and complete settlement via cards and mobile terminals.

This solution uses deep metric learning to accurately recognize each dish in 0.3 seconds. It learns rapidly and can instantly recognize the distinguishing features of a dish after the canteen operator inputs a new dish image. The system provides an algorithm for updating the features of incorrectly identified samples to improve the recognition rate. In addition, after each recognition, the terminal system automatically adds object detection and classification labels and sends them to the training platform on the cloud. In this way, the number of training samples and the precision of the algorithm models are improved on the go. The more it is used, the smarter the system becomes.

The Seefood solution sets itself apart by providing real-time nutrition and calorie information. Empowered by these innovations, the solution not only eliminates the need for manual cashier intervention to drastically cut queuing time, but delivers healthier, tech-driven, and more personalized services for diners.

"I come here every day for my work lunch. It’s now fully self-service, from dish choosing to settlement. No more queues! It’s ‘food with fun’," said an engineer at the canteen of a Guangzhou-based company using the Seefood solution. Another interviewee, a market specialist, said, "The canteen now can even calculate the calories of food and provide very intuitive nutrition reference. That’s a game changer and exactly the ideal dining solution for health-conscious people like me."

For cafeteria operators, the Seefood solution implements fully automated settlement, and provides order and turnover statistics to visualize operation data, helping them improve service capability and boost operational efficiency.

A cafeteria that serves 2000 people can accelerate its settlement speed from 20 seconds per person to just 3 seconds, increase the number of people served per hour from 180 to 1200, and implement 24/7, real-time operation data management and analysis.

Currently, the Seefood solution has been applied by Sodexo in its cafeteria for Huawei’s Shenzhen headquarters, as well as other large enterprises, hospitals, and universities in cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai in China. The solution has already demonstrated its marvelous business value and is well received by canteen operators and consumers.

Looking ahead, Sodexo is planning to promote this solution globally. The solution will be deployed in Sodexo’s cafeterias in West Europe in the first half of 2021. Martin Boden, President of Sodexo China, said, "Innovation is in Sodexo’s DNA, and China is one of the countries leading the world’s technological and digital transformation. We are delighted to work with Huawei to develop innovative service models for catering. Through this joint innovation project, we can better serve our customers, and enrich customer experience in terms of efficiency, convenience, and health. We are committed to providing better Quality of Life services for consumers in China and around the world."

Huawei has been honing an AI software and hardware platform that delivers unrivaled ease of use and performance. Huawei works with industry customers and application partners to deliver AI innovation for industries. Huawei will deepen its collaboration with Sodexo to explore more scenarios in the catering industry, make catering services more convenient, and provide a better dining experience for consumers.

Sodexo is one of the world’s largest catering service providers and a Fortune Global 500 company. Headquartered in Paris, France, Sodexo provides catering services for enterprises, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and factories worldwide. With professional teams of chefs, dieticians, and kitchen staff, Sodexo has long been passionate about providing quality food that tastes amazing and delights its customers.

Healthy Kitchen 101 Becomes First Recipe Website Ever to Offer Complete RDA-compliant Meal Plans (with FREE access)

Meal plans with chef-adjusted and nutritionist-approved recipes are being released on HealthyKitchen101.com, the first and only recipe website to fully offer this feature to date.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Dec. 24, 2020 — For the first time ever, health-conscious cooks can now find wholesome and balanced meal plans that follow the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) on HealthyKitchen101.com, announced Luna Regina, founder of the leading healthy recipe website.

"Weve been working very hard over the past several years to develop a collection of delicious recipes that are compliant with the latest health standards," stated Regina, who has a diploma in Nutrition and one in Diet Planning and Weight Management.

The recipes used in the meal plans are created by Regina and refined by a professional chef for taste and presentation. Each and every one of them is then audited by a registered dietitian nutritionist for nutritional content.

"A random combination of healthy recipes does not guarantee a balanced meal. You have to account for the total calories, protein, fat, carbs, and sodium, among other nutrients and ingredients. This can be tedious and time-consuming, so people are sometimes hesitant about making healthy meals at home. Our meal plans take care of everything so you can focus on the cooking."

According to Regina, the nutritional content of every meal plan falls within the daily allowances recommended by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences.

The meal plans are designed for generally healthy people with no specific health conditions or special nutritional requirements. Each plan is a complete meal with a main dish, plus a side dish, beverage, and/or dessert. The plans are conveniently tagged as breakfast, lunch, or dinner for easy selection and navigation.

You can find recipes for a vegetarian frozen fruit smoothie, a low-carb shrimp salad, or nutrient-dense foods such as chicken alfredo, baked pork chops, and chicken and rice casserole. Complex dishes such as healthy meatloaf recipe or chicken and sausage gumbo are also featured.

The meal plans are currently accessible free of charge and without subscription on HealthyKitchen101.com. This ground-breaking feature is just one among many to be implemented on the website within the next year. Its the first step toward a mobile-based app to offer customized meal plans based on user-specific nutritional and caloric needs, according to Regina.

Within the next six months, the company is aiming to formulate nutritional plans covering all three main meals and snacks for the day.

"Nowadays, more people than ever are realizing the link between nutrition and physical-mental wellbeing. Millions come to Healthy Kitchen 101 via social media and our home site for recipe inspiration every month," says Regina. The RDA-compliant meal plans are part of our efforts to remove obstacles to healthy eating and motivate people to stay on track with wellness."

CNN’s ‘Eco Solutions’ meets the Japanese innovators tackling the problem of food waste

A week of special coverage begins December 21, with a 30-minute program airing December 26-27

HONG KONG, Dec. 17, 2020 — On this month’s ‘Eco Solutions’, CNN international correspondent Selina Wang explores how many people in Japan are now looking to tackle the problem of food waste head on – rethinking how we eat and conserving precious resources. In this 30-minute special, CNN meets the scientists and pioneers racing to find smart ways to make more and waste less.

CNN’s ‘Eco Solutions’ meets the Japanese innovators tackling the problem of food waste
CNN’s ‘Eco Solutions’ meets the Japanese innovators tackling the problem of food waste

As diners increasingly weigh up the environmental costs associated with consuming livestock, many are looking to unique meat alternatives. In his Tokyo restaurant Antcicada, entrepreneur Yuta Shinohara is looking to promote a sustainable and high-protein alternative to meat: insects. Shinohara is changing perceptions of insect food, serving up everything from gourmet cricket-based ramen to silkworm sausages.

Iconic Japanese company Nissin, famous for the Cup Noodle, is betting on the rise of eco-friendly comfort food. CNN learns about the company’s latest project: a new steak-flavored ramen featuring meat grown in a lab. Nissin is collaborating with Tokyo University professor Shoji Takeuchi to develop this meat, which is grown from animal stem cells. In his lab, Takeuchi explains how this invention could cut emissions and feed a growing population.

Each year, Japan throws away millions of tons of still edible food. This problem of food waste has led some to find creative ways to champion the spirit of mottainai – a centuries old concept rooted in the philosophy of respecting the value in all things. Uchiyama Masahiro’s new mottainai project restaurant serves up misshapen but perfectly edible dishes made from seafood which would otherwise have been discarded. Meanwhile, Kazuma Kawagoe’s app ‘Tabete’ matches users with eateries offering discounted food before it’s thrown away.

Food scraps are also revitalizing the Japanese paper tradition. CNN travels to Echizen, birthplace of the craft of making traditional Japanese paper, or washi. Here, artisans still make washi by hand – including Masami Igarashi, who is giving the 1500-year-old craft an eco-friendly update. She uses vegetable peels and other food waste as the basis of her paper products. This year, she even launched a line of biodegradable stationary products made up of her ‘food paper’.

Japan uses billions of disposable wooden chopsticks, or waribashi, every year – but most of these are imported from unmanaged forests, claiming millions of trees annually. CNN hears from Yoshihiro Takeuchi, a craftsman from a new generation of waribashi designers working to produce upcycled chopsticks by only using scraps of trees from sustainably managed forests. CNN also meets Tokyo-based designer Eko Hayashi, who co-created a waribashi-making kit, including tools and upcycled cypress, in the hopes of attracting a new audience to the work of waribashi craftsmen.

Hi-Chew goes bigger and better with hit social media campaign

SYDNEY, Nov. 4, 2020 — Social media are the name of the game when marketing to young people, and Hi-Chew seems to have hit the jackpot with its new digital campaign.

A trial consumer competition in October, focused on Instagram and Facebook, achieved a total reach of more than 140,000 members of the target audience, with an equivalent number of video views and nearly 1,000 likes.

"We’re really happy about the success of this campaign," said Terry Kawabe, the Managing Director of Morinaga Asia Pacific Co., which distributes Hi-Chew.  "Young people are fascinated by our fruit chew.  They know it’s been a hit around the world."

Based on the initial competition’s popularity, Hi-Chew (Japan’s selling soft candy) is expanding the campaign in November and December.  It will run in both Australia and New Zealand, with the next competition set for November 9–13.

In October, social media viewers guessed how many pieces of Hi-Chew were in a jack-o’-lantern.  For November, Hi-Chew fans will have to guess the number of pieces in a giant vintage bathtub. Winners will receive an entire tub’s worth of candy!

"’Fortune Flavours the Bold’ is the theme that drives Hi-Chews," said Cec Parnell, Creative Director of Sponge, the lead advertising agency in Sydney.  "And these competitions are big, bold and full of flavour."

There will be a third event in December, just in time for Christmas.

In Australia, Hi-Chew has been ranged at selected Coles stores nationwide. In New Zealand, the brand is sold at various retailers nationwide, including Pak ‘n Save and New World.

"Consumer interest and sales continue to grow," said Anthony King, Managing Director of Australian distributor Grocery Corporation.  "We expect that trend to continue, as Morinaga continues to invest in marketing programs."

The funding round attracted diverse investors recognizing the company’s strategic business model and potential to impact the health and well-being of people and the planet through advances in the food system. New and returning investors included Argonautic Ventures, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), Emart, GS Group, Louis Dreyfus Company, iSelect Fund, Fall Line Capital, Mercury Fund, Prelude Ventures, Prolog Ventures, S2G Ventures, and additional strategic and family office investors.

Benson Hill leverages Cloud Biology®, a discipline combining the power of data science, machine learning and AI techniques with plant biology and genomics. CropOS™ is the platform that makes this discipline actionable, significantly accelerating the precision and speed of product development. Benson Hill’s technology platform and collaborations empower the creation of healthier and more sustainable feed, food and ingredient options that consumers are seeking, while also delivering strong crop performance that farmers demand.

"As a firm, we are focused on investing in innovation that delivers the right calories and nourishment for a growing global population in a less commodity-driven food system," said Stephan Dolezalek, Executive Director at Wheatsheaf Group. "We feel the culture and partners propelling Benson Hill forward will have a significant impact on the health and sustainability challenges that burden our current food system in a way that benefits society and our environment."

"We are excited to contribute to the scale-up of Benson Hill’s work to advance a sustainable future of food by realizing the value creation potential of technology-enabled innovation," said Max Clegg, Head of Louis Dreyfus Company’s corporate venture capital program, LDC Innovations. "The power of genomics and genetic diversity is largely untapped, and we believe that the company’s technology and collaborative model unlocks efficiencies and new product differentiation for stakeholders across the value chain, from farmers to end-consumers."

"The plant-based protein movement is global in scale," said Hewie Kang, CEO of Emart, Shinsegae Group. "Benson Hill’s product innovations, particularly in the area of protein and nutrient density, are poised to help further accelerate the adoption of plant-based alternatives. Our investment reflects a strategic intent to help realize the vision of delivering a steady stream of more sustainable and healthy food options to a global consumer."

With this new round of funding, Benson Hill will continue to advance Cloud Biology® and its innovation engine CropOS™, amplify partner development efforts, continue to recruit top talent, and propel the commercial launch of the first Ultra-High Protein soybean varieties in 2021, among other product launches. The company’s portfolio of high-quality soybean varieties delivers a full range of in-demand premium attributes, including better digestibility, heart-healthy omega fatty acids, and higher protein that serve the plant-based food, healthy oils, animal feed and aquaculture markets.

"As a society, we’re at a crossroads made more evident as the pandemic has revealed strengths and vulnerabilities in our food system," said Matt Crisp, Benson Hill CEO. "Food choices that create enjoyment, make us stronger, and help preserve our environment need to be accessible to everyone, and the power of plant diversity and technology innovation can help fuel that evolution. We’re grateful for the growing coalition of investors, stakeholders, farmers and partners who recognize the urgency and opportunity of this moment to think collaboratively and modernize food production."
