Microsoft and the Open Data Institute announce an Education Open Data Challenge to help close the digital divide

LONDON and REDMOND, Washington, Nov. 11, 2020 — Microsoft and the Open Data Institute (ODI) announced today the launch of an Education Open Data Challenge to shine light on the relationship between broadband access and K-12 (ages 5 to 18 years old) education outcomes. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Education Open Data Challenge will help educators and research organizations better understand the potential long-term impact the ongoing disruption to traditional learning will have on the world’s most vulnerable learners.

Microsoft company logo.

Microsoft and the ODI are encouraging teams that wish to participate in the challenge to help generate innovative solutions to close the digital divide in K-12 education to go here to learn more. The winning team will be invited to elect a non-profit organization of their choice to receive a £50,000 award, with the runners-up electing non-profit organizations of their choice to receive £30,000 and £20,000 awards. The challenge is open to teams and individuals based globally.

"As students around the world increasingly rely on technology and connectivity to succeed in school, we must find ways to allow every student, everywhere, to succeed. Combining datasets in new ways can help unlock solutions to expand equitable and robust access to broadband," said Jennifer Yokoyama, Microsoft Vice President and Chief IP Counsel. "We’re excited to join in the launch of this Education Open Data Challenge to help close the digital divide and level the playing field for students around the world."

Participants will receive access to tools and resources from Microsoft, the ODI, and BroadbandNow, as well as data made available for the first time as part of this challenge:

  • Participants will have access to a more granular version of Microsoft’s U.S. broadband usage data, this time with differential privacy applied. Microsoft will make available documentation that demonstrates the impact that applying differential privacy has had on the data.
  • The ODI will provide access to several eLearning modules on Open Data Essentials, Finding Stories in Data, Guidance for data users on data licensing and How to anonymize datasets for participants who wish to contribute their own data, as well as mentorship. Participants are also able to access free MS Learn training resources and training modules.
  • From BroadbandNow, participants will be able to access U.S. broadband terrestrial provider data.

The use of privacy-preserving technologies will become more prevalent as organizations seek to collaborate across the spectrum of data. The datasets that will be made openly available with the challenge will help participants to assess and understand the effect that technologies such as differential privacy can have on data insights and analysis.

"Organizations like Microsoft and BroadbandNow possess a wealth of interesting data that can be used to provide insights and support decision-makers in the education sector and beyond, especially as they face unprecedented challenges. This Challenge will stimulate the exploration of innovative uses for this data, outside the boundaries of the organizations that hold it," said Jeni Tennison, Vice President & Chief Strategy Adviser of the ODI. "The ODI is here to help organizations that want to ensure the data they hold brings the most value to the sectors, communities and societies they work in."

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted learning for more than 1.6 billion children and youth worldwide, as governments across the globe have closed educational institutions to stop the spread of the virus. In response, schools and teachers have made an unprecedented effort to reach students remotely through distance learning tools and platforms.

As the digital divide is expanded by the abrupt global transition to remote learning, understanding how and where the digital divide affects communities will be critical for managing the short-term delivery of education and ensuring a sustainable, equitable economic recovery.

"We are thrilled to participate in providing data for the Open Data Challenge and look forward to discoveries made by the participants," said John Busby, Managing Director of BroadbandNow. "Access to affordable broadband internet is crucial to education and digital equity."

Participating teams will be asked to identify gaps in digital infrastructure that affect the delivery of education services online, pinpoint potential impacts on learning outcomes, and suggest innovative and realistic solutions to address these gaps in a cost-efficient way. Some of the questions the challenge seeks to answer include:

  • How do students access remote learning, especially those who may not have easy access to digital infrastructure (e.g., technology and internet connectivity)?
  • What level of digital access to learning do students from disadvantaged groups have, relative to more advantaged groups?
  • What is the relationship between levels of digital skills and learning outcomes for different demographics?

Participants will have four months to complete the challenge from the opening date. Individuals and teams interested in participating in the challenge can learn more and register interest here. Once registered, individuals will be invited to attend dedicated activities to preview the data, learn more about it from the involved partners, and get equipped on how to best use it ahead of the public release on December 10, 2020.

CompTIA Offers Australian and New Zealand Citizens Free Online Training in the Foundations of Information Communications Technology

SYDNEY, Nov. 3, 2020 — Career changers, displaced workers, students or anyone interested in learning more about the fundamentals of information communications technology (ICT) are invited to take advantage of free online training offered by the ANZ Business Technology Community of CompTIA, the leading trade association for the global technology industry and workforce.

CompTIA is offering citizens of Australia and New Zealand free training and certification exam vouchers for its CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+) credential. CompTIA ITF+ is the only pre-career certification that helps people gauge their interest in ICT and whether a career in technology is right for them.

"Whether you are a student exploring career options; a displaced worker looking for a new opportunity; or simply someone who wants to expand their understanding of ICT, we invite you to take part in this unique opportunity," said Loraine Vorster, CompTIA’s vice president for business development for ANZ and Africa.

CompTIA Authorized Partners DDLS  and Cyber Train are supporting the program with  free virtual workshops during November and December for all participants and a variety of experiences for learners who complete their CompTIA ITF+ certification.

"The building of digital skills has never been more important and there is an abundance of opportunities for those looking to take their career further within the ICT field, especially those focused in moving into a cyber security role," said Jon Lang, CEO of DDLS, the largest ICT Training company in Australia. "There is a legitimate skills gap in Australia for security professionals, and for those individuals looking to start a career in IT with the goal to become a security professional, there is no better time than now to do this."

The Australian government has estimated that more than 90% of its citizens will need to use some level of digital skills at work within the next five years.1

"Digital skills are an essence of modern workforce as they have revolutionized the way we work and communicate," said Adnan Syed, principal consultant and senior technical trainer at Cyber Train Australia. "A digital skills culture in the workplace increases business productivity, can increase revenue and allows strong customer relationships."

"Working knowledge and business use of electronic devices, networks, cybersecurity, communications systems and data analysis are essential job criteria in the technological age," Syed added. "We need to do more to make sure that digital skills gap does not become a skills crisis."

In New Zealand, the country’s diverse and advanced tech sector has experienced 12% annual growth and technology exports have reached an estimated $950 million. Some 75,000 people are employed in ICT-related roles.2

"Recognising the ever-increasing skills gap in the ICT industry, it’s more important than ever for organisations within the industry to do what they can to close that gap," said Daniel Johns, chair of the CompTIA ANZ Business Technology Community. "CompTIA is in a unique position as not only an industry advocate, but a globally recognised certification body as well. We hope the adoption of this initiative will be widely received."

"I meet so many people who are unhappy in their careers, who could be fantastic for a role in ICT, but they either don’t have the confidence or don’t know where to start," said Moheb Moses, director of Channel Dynamics and director of the CompTIA ANZ Channel Community. "This is a great program to help you learn if ICT is right for you, and provides you with a certificate at the end. And it won’t cost you a cent."

Today’s announcement expands on a program launched in October 2019 to provide students in Australia and New Zealand with free courseware materials and certification exam vouchers as a prelude to potential careers in technology.

CompTIA ITF+ allows individuals to explore the foundations of technology, allowing them to expand their knowledge of basic digital skills. For some, ITF+ can be the stepping off point towards a career in technology; for others, understanding the fundamentals of technology will serve them well in any career they choose.

Enrollees in the free program will receive a CompTIA ITF+ self-study eBook and a certification exam voucher, along with access to a virtual workshop and an ITProTV video course. To enroll in CompTIA’s ITF+ program visit https://certs.comptia.org/itfanz/.

CompTIA has awarded some 2.7 million certifications to ICT professionals in 232 countries around the world, helping them to validate their skills and advance in their careers. CompTIA also offers a full suite of official learning resources, including self-paced and live online training with an instructor. Visit CompTIA.org to learn more.

USD 580,000 SOS Girls and Boys High School in Rawalakot

Reinforcing its emphasis on the pivotal role of education as a primary enabler of secure futures for vulnerable children, TBHF has allocated USD 580,000 for the construction of an SOS Girls and Boys High School in Rawalakot, in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan. The project seeks to bring high-quality education to children who are under the direct care of SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan, as well as underprivileged children in the wider community. Launched in September, the school is expected to be fully established by July 2022.

A special plaque, to acknowledge the meaningful contribution and support of The Big Heart Foundation for the welfare of children, will be affixed on the school grounds.

Establishment of computer labs and English language labs across SOS Youth Homes in Pakistan

In August, TBHF, in cooperation with SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan, launched a project to establish specialized computer training and English language labs in Sargodha, Sialkot and Muzaffarabad. Targeting 450 children and youth, the USD 80,584 project aims to support the youth in the care of SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan by equipping them with the necessary skills to secure jobs and fully integrate them into their communities as they reach adulthood.

USD 170,162 TCF-Sheikh Khalid Al Qasimi Campus in Lakhi Ghulam Shah, Shikarpur, Sindh

In June, TBHF mobilized funding of USD 170,162 for the construction of a primary school project in Lakhi Ghulam Shah, Shikarpur, in Pakistan’s Sindh province, in partnership with The Citizens Foundation (TCF).

The TCF-Sheikh Khalid Al Qasimi Campus project, named in memory of the Sharjah Ruler’s son, aims to provide high-quality formal education to 180 marginalized children per year, with a particular focus on girls’ education. When complete, the school will employ 9 female faculty members and five support staff, of which two will be women.

TBHF estimates that the indirect beneficiaries from this project would number around 1,260 per year, which aligns with the vision of the Pakistani educational laws, which stipulate the provision of free and compulsory education for children in the 5 – 16 age group, and the allocation of 10 per cent of seats in schools and private educational institutes for poor children.

In addition, TBHF has pledged monetary support to cover the running costs of the TCF-Sheikh Khalid Al Qasimi School for a period of five years on completion of the project.

Upgradation of women’s skills development centres in Pakistan

The USD 200,045 project, scheduled for completion in December 2021, will provide equipment for industrial tailoring, advanced beauty-therapy, and information technology, helping these women acquire advanced level vocational and technical skills in the crafts of dressmaking, tailoring, and jewellery design, in addition to receiving training in beautician and computer courses. Ultimately, the project seeks to build trainees’ self-reliance by improving their access to suitable livelihood development opportunities.

The Big Heart Foundation Community Centre’ to directly benefit more than 1,500 Afghan refugees

To promote the active engagement and participation of refugees in communities, TBHF has pledged USD 61,131 for a new community centre project in Haripur in cooperation with UNHCR.

Scheduled to be completed at the end of 2021, ‘The Big Heart Foundation’ centre will place special emphasis on the training of more than 1,500 Afghan refugees including youth, women, and adolescent girls in literacy courses, tailoring, business skills, as well as entrepreneurial and financial management skills to improve their livelihoods and make them economically independent.

In addition to empowering the refugee community with vocational skills including tailoring and embroidery, as well as mobile phone and computer repair, ‘The Big Heart Foundation’ centre will also raise community awareness on the risks associated with child marriage and child labour.

An additional 1,000 Afghan refugees including men, women, girls and boys, and those with special needs will also receive direct or indirect benefits from the training sessions and outreach activities organized by ‘The Big Heart Foundation’ community centre.

Mariam Al Hammadi: TBHF recognizes the importance of skilled human resources

Speaking on the side-lines of the implementation of the five projects, Mariam Al Hammadi, Director of TBHF, emphasized that the targeted educational and vocational projects carried out by TBHF are aimed at supporting the efforts of civil organizations in Pakistan to enhance the lives of refugees and the marginalized groups across the country. Ensuring better educational support and providing opportunities for learning and life skills development will economically empower beneficiaries to contribute to the developmental efforts of the host nation and support in the rebuilding efforts in their home countries upon their return, she added.

Mariam Al Hammadi said: "TBHF recognizes the importance of skilled human resources to build a strong, sustainable economy, and is committed to fulfilling its humanitarian responsibilities towards refugees and those in need around the world. We view our role as an integral part of the global community’s efforts to achieve the UN’s sustainable development goals through our focus on sustainable projects in education and community empowerment sectors."
