CryptoPunks Market Capitalization Nearly $2 Billion

CryptoPunks have achieved ‘unicorn’ status ahead of the landmark Christie’s auction of 9 CryptoPunks, according to researchers from the University of Nicosia

NICOSIA, Cyprus, May 11, 2021 — The value of all 10,000 CryptoPunks, the first and best-known NFT (Non-Fungible Token) project and ecosystem based on Ethereum, exceeds $1.95B (€1.60B), according to estimates by researchers at the Institute For the Future (IFF) at the University of Nicosia.

The IFF research team has analyzed CryptoPunk sales data from January 1st, 2021 to present with various machine learning models to estimate a value for each individual CryptoPunk.   The team estimates that the aggregate value of the individual CryptoPunks as of May 9, 2021 is 476,113 ETH (or $1.95B at current exchange rates).  This is the first time, to the team’s knowledge, that a market capitalization has been calculated for a complete NFT ecosystem.

Ali Tayari, team lead, noted: "Establishing ecosystem-wide valuations across thousands or tens of thousands of NFT assets can only be done through automated analysis and is a critical missing link in the NFT ecosystem.  We look forward to further refining our valuation models and extending them to other NFT projects in the coming weeks."

Antonis Polemitis, Director of IFF and CEO of the University of Nicosia (UNIC) noted: "NFTs are already a multi-billion dollar industry, in part due to pioneering work by Larva Labs, the creators of CryptoPunks.  We believe that, over time, NFTs will extend from arts and collectibles to represent a wide range of assets, services and communities.  By the end of the decade, NFTs will represent trillions of dollars in value in a digitally native format.  It is critical for all stakeholders in this ecosystem to have robust and credible automated measures of value, and we hope that IFF can play a key role in establishing benchmarks in this exciting field."

CryptoPunk valuations are recalculated daily and the latest valuation estimates can be found at NFTValuations.com.  More detail about the project can be found at: www.NFTValuations.com/about.

JIS Service Learning Supports Communities in Need

Students of Jakarta Intercultural School engage in community outreach that makes a difference

JAKARTA, Indonesia, May 7, 2021 — Seventeen-year-old Sangwook is on a mission to help narrow the digital divide in Indonesia. As a 21st-Century learner whose studies greatly depend on digital technology, he recognizes that computers are "like treasure boxes which are full of educational potential," and firmly believes that equal access to computers and the internet can make all the difference in a child’s education.

Sangwook, a senior student of Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) engages in community outreach that makes a difference.
Sangwook, a senior student of Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) engages in community outreach that makes a difference.

So, with the help and expert guidance of the Service-Learning Program at Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS), where he is currently a Junior, Sangwook and members of his Plugged-IN club are working hard to make technology fun and accessible for everyone — especially young learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. They teach twice-weekly lessons to elementary school students who get hands-on experience learning about various tech-related topics.

"Each week had a specific theme and at least one interactive activity," Sangwook explained with enthusiasm. "One example is a QR code scavenger hunt: Students and club members worked in teams to complete various technology-related challenges around campus by scanning QR codes. Lots of running around and lots of energy."

Plugged-IN is one of the 35 student-led clubs at JIS High School that takes part in collaborative community engagement as part of the school’s Service Learning Program. Essentially, these clubs operate like a network of non-profit organizations that aim to respond to an authentic need of the community, explained JIS Service Learning Coordinator Jodi Berry.

"Service learning offers students opportunities to lead, collaborate and develop philanthropic values that lead to civil participation," she said. "With guidance from the JIS High School Service Council and faculty advisors, students work together to launch campaigns, fundraisers and larger initiatives and projects that support our community partners in need."

Like Sangwook, JIS Grade 12 student Nelson saw the importance of addressing the needs of vulnerable, underprivileged children. To help make a difference, he joined not one, but two service learning clubs: House of Hope, which engages with children from the Panti Akhiruz Zaman orphanage through games, sporting activities and English and math lessons; as well as the Conquer Cancer Club, which visits children struggling with cancer and entertains them with arts and crafts lessons.

"Service learning allows students to build a good moral character. I believe that an important element of education is to be able to engage with students and people in the community around us," he said. "Not only have service projects given me the skills to work together and collaborate with people, but they have also taught me to be more empathetic and caring to those less privileged than myself."

But then the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. With health restrictions in place from the government and students moving to online learning, it became impossible for Nelson and other service learners to engage directly with the people they’ve worked so hard to help. JIS service learning clubs found themselves having to rethink and redesign their entire approach to community outreach.

For Sangwook and Plugged-IN, that meant shifting their lessons to Zoom — which only emphasized the very issue they were trying to address.

"The pandemic exacerbated and exposed the issue of the digital divide in Indonesia. We learned that many students are forced to stay home with no access to technology and unable to attend online school during lockdown," he said. "Therefore, our priority now is to help them go through these difficult times. I think that our core motivation has always been the same; it comes from the belief that technology can enrich — or possibly change — one’s life."

In addition to teaching online lessons, the Plugged-IN club has spent the past year organizing donation which drives to collect secondhand gadgets. These are then channeled to Indonesian state-school students who have been struggling to participate in virtual classes during the pandemic because their families can’t afford the necessary technology.

"We have donated almost 100 devices, including smartphones, desktop computers, laptops and iPads. The process has been a long one; we asked people and companies around us for devices, collected them, repaired them and put them into packages along with accessories, masks and instructions," Sangwook explained.

Nelson, meanwhile, has been dedicated to helping both House of Hope and Conquer Cancer Club put together and deliver care packages — filled with materials for various activities, essential food items, hygiene kits — to the children he once met with regularly. But he wanted to do more. He wanted to reach out and help as many children as possible using his strengths and what he believes is the key to a better future for them: education.

He used his free time to write an English-Indonesian workbook with illustrations and engaging activities titled Let’s Learn Basic English With Billy, which has been published and is currently for sale. For every book he sells, he donates a copy to a local school or orphanage.

"The book teaches Indonesian children the basics of English literacy, including basic vocabulary, sentence structure, forming questions and grammar. Through this book, I hope to help Indonesian children acquire English literacy at a young age and provide them with the keys to the world," Nelson said.

"Additionally, I also led a collaboration project with seven of the service clubs at JIS, where each club created an English lesson video that paired with a lesson taught in the book. These videos are intended to complement the book’s lessons."

Service learning at JIS demonstrates several "competencies" in 21st-Century Education, such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication, which Berry said were needed to overcome the urgent issues we face today. JIS, however, considers "compassion" as another core competency.

"We’re at a time when the biggest world problems cannot be solved alone. We have to be able to work together to create a better world for all," she said. "Above all, service learning is an approach to develop those competencies, to complement what students are learning inside the classroom with experiences and opportunities outside the classroom."

Ascensia Rolls Out The On@Pro Online Educational Platform for Healthcare Professionals in Collaboration With the Tumaini Institute

BASEL, Switzerland, April 28, 2021 — Ascensia Diabetes Care, a leading global diabetes care company, has announced today that it has rolled out an online educational platform for continuous personal learning aimed at healthcare professionals working with people with diabetes. The On@Pro tool, which was originally piloted in September 2020, has been developed in partnership with the TUMAINI Institute in Germany, through a collaboration with Professor Peter Schwarz, a globally renowned diabetes expert.

On@Pro is currently available in 13 countries, including the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon and the UAE), South Africa, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Singapore, China Hong Kong, the Philippines and Nepal, and there are plans to add additional markets over the course of 2021. It can be accessed via Android, Microsoft and iOS enabled devices such as smartphones, tablets and PCs, through a personal access code which can be obtained from Ascensia in countries where the tool is currently being offered. Access is free of charge to ensure access for as many healthcare professionals as possible.

The platform currently offers a total of 32 modules[1], all in English language, relating to various aspects of diabetes care and management. Each module includes a 3-4 minute introductory video, a set of educational slides and an assessment tool that enables the user to receive certification[2]. In certain markets, including South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and UAE, the tool has been accredited and completion of modules can lead to CME (Continuing Medical Education) credits.

Rob Schumm, President at Ascensia Diabetes Care commented: "Through our conversations with healthcare professionals, we became aware of a strong desire for a more comprehensive education platform in diabetes. As part of our ongoing commitment to the diabetes community, one of our priorities is to provide free educational resources to healthcare professionals that can build a greater understanding of diabetes and its management. We believe this will equip HCPs, including GPs, nurses and pharmacists, with the knowledge needed to advise and support people to more effectively self-manage their condition. The On@Pro platform is easily accessible and offers bite-size modules for effective and efficient continuous learning. Alongside On@Pro, we have developed other educational initiatives such as the EMEA Nurse Symposium and virtual courses for pharmacists and other healthcare stakeholders in North America. We believe that widespread education can empower healthcare professionals to help improve and simplify the lives of people living with diabetes."

"We wanted to provide an attractive and unique educational portal covering the different aspects of diabetes care relevant to healthcare professionals via a state-of-the-art platform. This tool enables personal continuous medical education that results in a CME certificate for the successful completion of the education program," concluded Prof. Dr. med. habil. Peter Schwarz, at the TUMAINI Institute.

The modules are split into basic, advanced and add-on modules, and each one takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The 18 basic modules cover topics relating to diabetes prevention, diabetes-related complications, diabetes in daily living and diabetes management, including nutrition and activity, self-monitoring of blood glucose, oral antidiabetic drugs, and insulin dosing. The nine advanced modules cover specific types of diabetes sub-groups or diabetes in specific scenarios – in pregnancy, in the elderly population, or in adolescents and children. They also look at accuracy in specific situations, such as low blood glucose ranges, gestational diabetes and among CGM and FGM users. Finally the four add-on modules cover e-health in diabetes, diabetes in Ramadan and blood glucose awareness training.

1. The content of the modules has been prepared by Prof. Peter Schwarz and the TUMAINI Institute and reflects their respective personal scientific views. Ascensia has no influence over the content of specific modules.
2. Certification granted by the University of Dresden and TUMAINI Institute, Germany.

DevOps Institute Announces the ‘Upskilling 2021: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report’

With new data gathered from over 2,000 IT professionals worldwide, the report shows the continued adoption of DevOps must be supported through a learning organization and the continuous development of multi-faceted, skilled DevOps professionals

BOCA RATON, Fla., April 21, 2021 — DevOps Institute, a global professional association for advancing the human elements of DevOps, today announced the release of the "Upskilling 2021: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report." In its third year, the report examines DevOps hiring trends around the globe within enterprise IT organizations of all sizes. In addition to DevOps roles, the report examines the top skill domains and associated must-have skills within these domains, which are essential for a successful DevOps journey. Data in the 2021 report is based on research gathered from an open survey of more than 2,000 respondents from organizations of all sizes around the world.

"DevOps Humans remained in-demand, despite a global pandemic that upended our ways of life and business," said Jayne Groll, CEO of DevOps Institute. "This is a testament to the importance and value of DevOps transformations at companies across industries and around the globe. The findings in the 2021 Upskilling Report give us clarity into the evolution of DevOps Humans and how IT organizations will shape their talent-based structures in 2021 and beyond."

The research and data analysis was led by DevOps Institute’s Chief Research and Content Officer, Eveline Oehrlich, with support from Platinum Sponsor, GitLab; Gold Sponsors, CloudBees and The LLPA; Bronze Sponsors, Tricentis and HCL Software; and Media Sponsor, MediaOps.

Key Findings from the ‘Upskilling 2021: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report’ include:

  • Stop talking about being a learning organization and start acting. Seventy percent of survey respondents said that a learning organization was a predominant model–the DevOps way of working–while 45 percent leaned toward a safety culture. And, while 39 percent of IT teams are still struggling with a defined and systematic upskilling program, 52 percent of organizations already have a formally designed upskilling program or are currently developing one.
  • Hiring for DevOps initiatives is high. COVID-19 has not stopped the hiring of DevOps roles. Sixty percent of organizations are recruiting now or in the future.
  • Capabilities and skill development must go hand in hand. DevOps teams must assess which critical capabilities they can perform or not, across key areas. But capabilities must be supported with skilled DevOps Humans. Upon examining the priority domain skill categories, the survey data shows that the essential combination of skills for a successful DevOps human are across the automation, human, technical, functional, process and framework knowledge skill domain categories.
  • Pressure continues to force old IT operating models to change.  As new forms of hybrid computing are on the rise, it gives application developers more freedom to choose tools and programming languages. As this increases, IT operations teams not yet practicing DevOps feel more pressure to embrace DevOps.
  • Value Stream Management (VSM) skills are seen by 39 percent of respondents as a must-have skill within the process and framework skill domain. DevOps and Agile practices have been adopted to innovate and create more iterative approaches for software development and delivery. However, the value must come through the customer lens. This is where VSM comes in. In simple terms, understanding and examining value streams of software being delivered end-to-end enables teams to make complex processes visible and provides the ability to pivot towards further value improvement.
  • The adoption of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) as an operating model is 22 percent in 2021 compared to 15 percent in the previous year. SRE is needed to continue automation and reduce toil. Forty-seven percent of the survey respondents voted SRE skills as a must-have skill in the process and framework skill domain this year compared to 28 percent in the previous year’s survey.
  • DevSecOps is a key trend. Security is integral to protect the business and enforce internal and external policies of the company. DevSecOps makes security an equal consideration alongside development and operations. According to survey participants, DevSecOps achieved a must-have percentage vote of 56 percent in the automation tool category.
  • New models such as DataOps and ModelOps are showing up. DataOps was voted by 27 percent as a must-have skill domain in the automation tool skill domain, whereas ModelOps received 22 percent. These new models are shaping the ongoing iterations of DevOps operating models.
  • DevOps Engineers are the most in-demand job title this year. It represents 53 percent of recently recruited DevOps positions. The DevOps engineer’s responsibility might differ from company to company, but all should be engaged in upskilling themselves and their teams.

"Our research shows that the future of DevOps at any organization is dependent upon the breadth and depth of capabilities and the supporting skills of the team members and within the team," said Oehrlich. "A successful DevOps journey (actually any journey) has the DNA of a learning organization which means there is a commitment of continuous learning across all layers and players. Team members have changed their mental models to look at different views working in a collective and collaborative team. For example, problems and mistakes are opportunities to learn. This ability to continuously learn enables individuals and teams to work better together across boundaries regardless of process, team or technology boundaries. This mental continuous learning model will take time to develop, adapt and apply. Still, each individual can bring their skills and abilities to shape the bigger collective effort of DevOps. For everyone in IT, this is an exciting time to unlock your power, abilities and skills to accelerate your DevOps journey and that of your team and company. DevOps Human readiness and organizational learning must take on new importance now and in this next normal."

GUANGZHOU, China, April 9, 2021 — A high-level "science-centered" conference was held lately in Nansha District, Guangzhou, aiming to discuss policies recently introduced by the district government in the report the 16 scientific and technological innovation policies on supporting the transformation of Nansha Science City into the main comprehensive national science center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (the 16 scientific and technological innovation policies for short), according to the People’s Government of Nansha District. The conference was also an invitation to the global science and technology innovation (STI) professionals and enterprises, whose cooperation with Nansha will inject impetus to the progress of human civilization.

Planned to cover an area of 99 square kilometers, Nansha Science City is jointly established by Guangzhou Municipal Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), integrating science and education. It is expected to serve as an important platform for the frontier research, basic research and high-tech innovation in the Greater Bay Area. The City is built upon the objective to establish a "Centenary Science City" set by Guangzhou Municipal Government in early 2021.

According to Lu Yixian, secretary of Nansha District, Guangzhou, Nansha Science City should guarantee innovation development in all aspects: scientific discovery, technological invention, industrial development, professional support and ecological optimization, while fostering an ideal environment with concentrated innovation resources, active innovation subjects and efficient innovation mechanism.

"The Nansha Science City built by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangzhou Municipal Government aims to become an international first-class science city and an important source of original innovation. With original innovation as the new blood, Nansha witnesses an increasing number of emerging industries with strategic importance such as aerospace industry and marine economy," said Xie Ming, standing committee member and executive vice mayor of Nansha District.

The 16 scientific and technological innovation policies will facilitate the gathering and building of major technology infrastructures in Nanhai District, and will foster the establishment of scientific research platforms not only consistent with the industrial development orientation of the region, but also essential to the STI.

Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) is an important scientific research platform jointly established by Nansha District Government, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Guangzhou Municipal Government. It focuses on major scientific and technological tasks such as sustainable exploitation of marine islands and reefs, sustainable use of resources and ecologically sustainable development. Zhang Si, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the director of the Laboratory, said in the conference that the Laboratory will work on the major scientific facilities of the cold seep ecosystem, which will support the natural gas hydrate exploitation with long-term observation and real-time early warning throughout the process, so as to ensure a safe, clean, economic and sustainable utilization of hydrate resources.

Three major science and technology infrastructure pre-research projects, including the cold spring ecosystem research device and dynamic wide area hypersonic wind tunnel, are reported to have started in August last year. Soft foundation treatment and foundation pit are expected to be completed by the first half of the year.

While enterprises are home to STI, high-end professionals are the key to these innovations. According to Xie Jiasheng, CEO of Guangdong Medical Valley Investment Management Co., Ltd. (GDMV), Nanshan government provides substantial support for the STI enterprises and professionals, incentivizing companies to bring in talents. It is reported that the 16 scientific and technological innovation policies have stepped up the talent attraction effort by providing high-quality education for the children of the introduced professionals, granting them qualification to apply for Guangzhou Talent Green Card and equal civic rights as locals without changing their place of origin.

The transformation of technological achievements was also the focus in the conference. The 16 scientific and technological innovation policies will provide financial support for the local enterprises as they procure and industrialize scientific achievement from universities and scientific research institutes, which will accelerate the transformation of the sci-tech achievements from sample to product. The CAS Academician, Professor Chen Xinzi from Sun Yat-sen University stated that Nansha Research Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University has cultivated a group of enterprises with core competitiveness since its establishment in Nansha nine years ago. It has promoted the development of related industries, and formed a service system for the transformation of sci-tech achievements in drug industry featured by small-scale R&D, test, sample production and industrialization.

Companies have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic since its outbreak, and those from Nansha District are no exception. Dr. Xiao Guowei, leader and founder of APT Electronics Co., Ltd., said that after the short but severe impact, APT has resolutely scaled up its input in R&D and accelerated product and industrial upgrade, so as to reverse the adverse market situation brought by the Trade War and the pandemic. So far, the company’s orders have been scheduled till the third quarter of 2021. The development of APT also demonstrates the advantage of the Greater Bay Area in the high-end manufacturing industry chain. Looking back at the company’s achievements, Xiao Guowei was grateful for Nansha Government for its support. He said that the key competitiveness of Nansha’s business environment lies in the enterprise-centered government-business relationship, together with the flexible and efficient government services.

According to Lu Yixian, Nansha will further strengthen the core position of innovation in the future of the district, promote the high-quality development of Nansha Science City, create a new blueprint for growth, contributing to the construction of an international scientific innovation center, and the innovation development of the Greater Bay Area.
