AI-based Analysis of Cancer Tissue Predicts Response to Immunotherapy–Findings to Be Presented at ASCO 2021

  • Lunit to present four abstracts including one in a ‘Poster Discussion Session’
  • AI-based tissue analysis platform ‘Lunit SCOPE’ to be launched within the second half of 2021: "We aim to make our AI the new standard for cancer treatment"

SEOUL, Korea, June 4, 2021 — A new finding reveals that AI-based tissue analysis can show better prognosis for immunotherapy as well as find more patients eligible for the treatment, according to a medical AI startup, Lunit. The findings will be presented during the upcoming American Society of Clinical Oncology(ASCO) Annual meeting 2021. The company is to present four poster presentations, including one in a "Poster Discussion Session".

The presentations feature Lunit SCOPE, an AI software that analyzes tissue slide images, developed by Lunit. One finding states that Lunit SCOPE IO—one of Lunit SCOPE product lines—can be used as a new biomarker for the treatment of multiple cancer types. The software analyzes tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes(TIL) in cancer patients’ tissue slides, assigning a score to each criterion. Upon validation with real-world data, the results showed that the higher the score, the better the response to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment, a subtype of immunotherapy.

TIL is known as a potential tumor agnostic biomarker for ICI therapy. Lunit has been validating the clinical application of Lunit SCOPE IO for predicting ICI treatment outcomes in advanced lung cancer. This study expanded the clinical application of Lunit SCOPE IO across multiple cancer types. The study was verified by more than 1,000 real-world patient data of 9 cancer types, which were collected from major institutions including Stanford University Medical Center.

"With multiple researches and long-term studies, we have been validating the effectiveness of an AI-based tissue analysis platform called ‘Lunit SCOPE’ that can help predict a cancer patient’s response to immunotherapy," said Chan-young Ock, Chief Medical Officer of Lunit.

Online demo image of Lunit SCOPE

Lunit will also present a study on Lunit SCOPE PD-L1. AI analysis of PD-L1 expression can generate objective quantification, which can lead to accurately finding subjects for ICI therapy among non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

"Currently, pathologists interpret tissue slides through the naked eye. They assess PD-L1 expression level, which is the current standard for clinical application, but there are limitations. With the help of Lunit SCOPE PD-L1, which was trained with data including PD-L1 expression results of 380,000 cancer cells, we are able to find more patients who would respond to ICI therapy, 50% more, according to our study," said Ock.

Lunit also announced that one of its abstracts about assessment of breast cancer risk has been selected for the ASCO 2021 ‘Poster Discussion Session’. Around 20% among all poster presentations are selected for this session, through strict review by the ASCO committee.

According to this study, unique parenchymal pattern with future breast cancer risk among breast cancer patients was identified by AI. Among breast cancer patients who developed cancer on one of the breasts, images from the other ‘normal’ side were collected and labeled as ‘high risk’. After training the AI with this dataset, the algorithm was validated on more than 4,000 external cases. The results showed that Lunit’s AI distinguished between high-risk and normal tissue with high accuracy, showing potential to be used as an independent biomarker to select high-risk populations based on mammography alone.

"Through continuous research, Lunit has been presenting groundbreaking findings at ASCO since 2019," said Brandon Suh, CEO of Lunit. "It is considered a remarkable achievement for a medical AI startup to present four abstracts at such a renowned global medical conference. We are now focusing on the next stage, going beyond academic research to productization of our AI softwares to be used in actual cancer research, and eventually, clinical practice. We are planning to formally launch Lunit SCOPE products this year, taking steps on setting our AI as the new standard of cancer treatment."

Marking its 57th anniversary, ASCO 2021 will be held online from June 4 to 8 due to COVID-19. More than 45,000 medical professionals from over 150 countries worldwide take part in the meeting to share the latest R&D achievements and insights related to cancer treatment.

Solid-state battery maker ProLogium receives another Edison Award

TAIPEI, April 23, 2021 — The 2021 Edison Awards gala was held in Fort Meyers, Florida on Thursday, April 22. Solid-state battery maker ProLogium has been awarded a bronze award. ProLogium has been selected as a finalist for the category of Critical Human Infrastructure. The three finalists in the subcategory are all outstanding examples of utilizing technology innovation as a means to promote safety and efficiency of electricity use. ProLogium is chosen for its proprietary ASM (Active Safety Mechanism) technology designed for battery safety. Winners are decided by the votes of 3,000 senior industry leaders, making the award a truly special honor.

Founded in 1987, the Edison Awards is an annual celebration of innovative technology highlighting excellent inventions for the betterment of human life. ProLogium is the only solid-state battery company in the world that has been recognized two times in the Awards’ over 100 years of history. Back in 2019, ProLogium won its first Edison Gold Award for its patented BiPolar+ technology. The BiPolar+ technology took solid-state battery performance to a whole new level, while the ASM technology guarantees absolute safety. This signifies another major step forward for the application of solid-state battery in EV cars.

Why did ProLogium want to develop the ASM technology for the market?

Absolute safety can only be achieved when battery safety is assured at the cell level. Unsafe cells can lead to the risk of thermal runaway even when the module is well protected. Solid-state battery is intrinsically safe because of its use of solid-state electrolyte. This means passive safety is guaranteed. However, when large quantities of electrodes and cells are densely packed and stacked, innovative technology is needed to enable active safety.

The ASM, or Active Safety Mechanism, is a technology developed by ProLogium that actively terminates the thermal runaway reaction and ensures the safety of battery cells. The ASM is unlike any other active safety mechanism that came before it. We have seen mechanisms using flame retardant to reduce combustion, or adding additives to slow down the electrochemistry and delay thermal runaway. However, these methods will inevitably hinder battery performance. That is why ProLogium decided to take a more fundamental approach and develop a mechanism that reduces energy and prevents thermal runaway.

"We believe that ASM is the only way to absolute safety for EV and ESS battery. With the ASM technology, we are able to fulfill our commitment to battery safety. We hope to combine the ASM with the MAB, ProLogium’s propriety modular technology, and introduce our battery module to the market, so that we can help automotive OEMs as well as customers with needs for large-capacity battery packs to optimize their product performance and eliminate any risk of fire or explosion. In other words, we can make truly safe battery with excellent mileage capacity and usher in a new era for solid-state battery." CEO of ProLogium, Vincent Yang said in an interview.

As stated by Martin Eberhard, cofounder, original CEO and chairman of Tesla, "ProLogium’s solid-state electrolyte battery technology is the most exciting new development I have seen in this field. The combination of safety, aging characteristics, fast charge rate, and bipolar packaging, all without sacrifice energy density, and at a competitive price, make ProLogium cells the best I have seen for automotive applications."

Free People from Monotonous Work: OMRON Releases FH-SMD Series 3D Vision Sensor for Robot Arms

– Human-like Fast Detection and Flexibility for Automating Part Picking –

KYOTO, Japan, March 3, 2021 — OMRON Corporation based in Kyoto, Japan, announced the release in March of its new FH-SMD Series 3D Vision Sensor. The FH-SMD Series can be mounted on a robot to recognize randomly placed (bulk) automotive parts in three dimensions, enabling space-saving assembly, inspection, and pick & place, which are difficult with conventional robots, and improving productivity. OMRON continues to contribute to bringing innovation to manufacturing sites through total solutions combining robots and automation devices.

Production workers are hard to come by these days, and labor costs have risen sharply. Manufacturers are now facing intense pressure to automate processes that rely on the senses of experienced human workers. Moreover, production workers now need to work harmoniously with machines to raise productivity amid the COVID-19 crisis. In particular, the automotive industry requires vision sensors as the eyes of robots that are indispensable for automation because it is difficult for machines to recognize positions and postures of various complex-shaped parts. However, conventional large 3D vision sensors take a long time to detect the status of targets as well as needing large spaces and large mounting equipment. These are barriers to installation into preexisting spaces and automation that provides human-level performance.

The new FH-SMD Series 3D Vision Sensor is small and light enough to be mounted on a robot arm, eliminating the need for special mounting equipment and thus saving space. This sensor can be moved to change viewpoints and easily recognize parts, reducing blind spots and providing reliable detection. In addition, the newly developed 3D measurement technology enables part detection in approximately 0.4 seconds (*1) regardless of the shape and location. Bulk parts assembly can be automated smoothly.

OMRON set forth a strategic concept called "innovative-Automation" consisting of three innovations or "i’s" — "integrated" (control evolution), "intelligent" (development of intelligence by ICT), and "interactive" (new harmonization between people and machines). By providing productive automation solutions combining the FH-SMD Series and robots, OMRON accelerates the creation of "interactive" manufacturing sites — key to the materialization of "innovative-Automation" — together with its client companies.

Note:

About "innovative-Automation"

Recently, OMRON has developed a manufacturing innovation concept, called "innovative-Automation." With this concept, OMRON is currently committed to bringing innovation to manufacturing sites through three key innovations, or three "i’s." Through these innovations in the area of automation, OMRON aims to enable significant productivity improvements in manufacturing sites in order to achieve high-value-added manufacturing.

With the first "i," "integrated" (control evolution), OMRON will seek to advance automated control technology so that virtually any operator, even inexperienced operators, can effortlessly perform work that previously required the expert skills of experienced workers. With the second "i," "intelligent" (development of intelligence by ICT), OMRON seeks to create constantly evolving equipment and production lines. By adopting a wide range of control devices and artificial intelligence (AI), machines can learn through experience and maintain themselves in optimal condition. For the third "i," "interactive" (new harmonization between people and machines), OMRON pursues the development of a new harmonious relationship between human operators and machines; as they work together in the same workspace, machines will be able to assist human operators by recognizing human thoughts and behavior in a way that only OMRON, a specialist control equipment manufacturer who knows production floors inside and out, can realize.
