A Tournament to Rise Above Southeast Asia

Running from 11th to 17th of December, ESL One heads to Kuala Lumpur’s MITEC Exhibition Centre bearing the theme “Rise Above Fate”. The previous three iterations of ESL One Malaysia were held in Genting’s Arena of Stars, and they were definitely tournaments to remember. Now with a venue in the heart of KL and more than 3 times the seating capacity, we can expect an even greater atmosphere for this spectacle! Caitlin Kang, Managing Director of ESL Malaysia at ESL FACEIT Group hopes to welcome thousands of Dota fans to Kuala Lumpur and continue ESL One’s legacy in Malaysia.

Top tier Dota, top tier prize pool

Adding to the spectacle is an increased prize pool of US$1,000,000 (over RM4.6 million), a huge leap from the US$400,000 of ESL One Malaysia 2022. Fighting for a share of the prize will be 12 top tier Dota teams from around the world. From the 11th to 13th December, these teams play the Group Stage; two groups of six teams, playing a single-round robin format.

DOTA 2 Comes to the Silver Screen in New Netflix Anime

Valve’s popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, DOTA 2, is making its way to a silver screen near you. The popular game will be making its silver screen debut on Netflix in a new anime series called DOTA: Dragon’s Blood. It will be making it debut on March 25, 2021.

DOTA: Dragon's Blood | Date Announcement | Netflix

The 8-episode anime series will be following the story of Davion, one of the characters from the MOBA. In the anime, Davion is a devoted Dragon Knight. He fights to rid the world of the scourge. During his journeys, he encounters a powerful, ancient eldwurm and Princess Mirana. Unbeknownst to Davion, the princess is on a mission of her own. Slowly, but surely, Davion is pulled into events that prove to be larger than he could ever imagine.

The series is produced in partnership with Valve. Showrunner, Ashley Edward Miller, is confident that the show will be received well by fans. Miller previously worked on shows such as X-Men: First Class, Thor and Black Sails and will be also acting as the executive producer for DOTA: Dragon’s Blood. Miller is joined by Ru Ki Hyun as the co-executive producer. The series is animated by Studio MIR, the studio behind The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender and the recently announced The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

“Fans will love how we’ve imagined the DOTA 2 universe and woven together an epic, emotional, and adult-oriented story about some of their favourite characters. The cinematic animation, acting and music are simply next level and I’m grateful to Valve for supporting our creative ambitions.”

Ashley Edward Miller, Showrunner & Executive Producer

While this is big news for the IP (Intellectual Property), Davion is widely considered one of the less interesting characters in the MOBA. It will be exciting to see what team behind the anime have in mind for the character and whether they will stick to the established lore of DOTA.

Acer’s Predator League Finals Postponed due to Coronavirus 2019-nCoV

Acer’s Predator League is one of the biggest e-sports events in the region. The company’s annual e-sports event brings together some of the best Defense of the Ancients (DoTA) and Player Unknown Battlegrounds (PUBG) players in the region. These competitors vie for a slice of the of the USD$40,000 prize pool. This year, the competition’s finals were scheduled to take place in the Philippines from February 19 to 23.

However, in light of recent developments, Acer has opted to delay the grand finals. The company announced late yesterday that the finals will tentatively be rescheduled to June or July given the current situation with the 2019-nCoV Coronavirus.

The company’s grand event is set to draw a huge crowd with about 20,000 tickets sold to date for the tournament. Acer informs us that processes are being put in place for those who have purchased their tickets. They will be updating everyone on how they will proceed with the ticketing moving forward. Keep an eye on their official website for updates on reimbursements or reuse of purchased tickets.
